Granddaddy of the Hollywood studios, Paramount Pictures is rightfully proud of its century of contributions to both American cinema and the art of film scoring. But the first disc of this 43-track double-CD anthology merely hints at the studio's musical peaks, blithely skipping through its first seven decades in just 17 tracks. Indeed, the package as a whole seems more interested in marketing its post-'70s catalog of hits and blockbusters than it does in paying real homage to history and roots. Even rarities like Double Indemnity and The Lost Weekend are served up via modern budget-line rerecordings, as is Ennio Morricone's epochal Once upon a Time in the West). Contemporary recordings of Aaron Copland's rare score to The Heiress and Franz Waxman's great Sunset Blvd. fare better, but soundtrack fans may miss the originals. The studio's rich pop-crossover successes in the '60s are documented via Breakfast at Tiffany's "Moon River" and excerpts from Romeo and Juliet and Love Story, while successful franchises like Star Trek and Raiders also get their due. Too often the '90s-focused second disc only underscores some uncomfortable trends in contemporary scoring--orchestral nervous tics punctuated by booming crescendos, treacly piano Muzak--and makes one wonder if the music of The Rugrats Movie and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider are really film music milestones. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Great Movies have Great Soundtracks!.......2007-05-10

If you love movies and movie music, you can't go wrong with this two cd Paramount Anniversary set.

2 out of 5 stars Only Disc 1 Is Worth Anything.......2006-07-19

Normally I have a lot to say in my reviews, but not this time. The main problem with this collection is that all the most memorable film scores are just on one disc, with the second used mostly to play out stuff from the last ten years that, really, musically isn't very memorable and only includes three pieces anyone will recognize just because, like the movies they come from, they're based on old TV shows - The Addams Family, Star Trek, and Mission: Impossible.

And that brings up another problem. With all due respect to the late Jerry Goldsmith, who has provided some truly great classic movie scores, was it REALLY necessary to include TWO versions of the SAME Star Trek march in this collection? This seems evocative of the milk-it-for-all-its-worth attitude Paramount has had lately toward its now-tarnished crown-jewel franchise. Where's James Horner's theme music from Star Trek II and III? If they're gonna put Star Trek on here twice, they should have provided a little diversity. It wouldn't have taken much, I'm sure.

I'm sure that Paramount's had other films with far more memorable music (even Harold Faltermeyer's Top Gun Anthem could have helped on Disc 2). This just seems like a lazy attempt at something that really could have been great.

2 out of 5 stars More of a propaganda CD.......2002-10-30

There are some really great songs on this 2 CD set. However, those really great songs seem to be lightly interspersed amongst a large number of forgettable songs whose main purpose seems to be to remind you of those movies you enjoy(ed) so much.

It seems a little odd to me that out of 90 years of film making the most memorable scores have been largely released within the last few years. I was pleased to find themes from the Godfather, Indiana Jones and Witness. I was perplexed with the inclusion of songs from Rugrats, both Mission Impossible movies (one would have been more than enough) and Tomb Raider (memorable???).

This is my own personal bias, but I do prefer movie soundtracks that evoke a feeling of excitement. With this collection I just couldn't get excited. I kept finding myself being let down by songs that didn't in some way complement the preceeding song.

There are certainly some great tracks here, but overall I was disappointed. My advise would be to look elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Great selection of Film Hits!.......2002-09-25

This one was a pleasant surprise! I thought- how could any CD that had "Baby Elephant Walk" be all that good? This one is. Lots of great scores- classics and a few hidden treasures. After hearing the beautiful title score for "Children of a Lesser God", I had to buy the entire soundtrack - very soothing. There are a few that may seem too overplayed ("Love Story", "Raiders of the Lost Ark",), but most are a welcome addition to any compilation. Try NOT loving "Building the Barn" from "Witness" or the "Hymn to the Fallen" from "Saving Private Ryan". Hours of great listening.

2 out of 5 stars Older recordings, main themes only.......2002-08-27

This is a great album concept, but I really wish Paramount had re-recorded these scores as they deserve to be heard. The tracks range from 1944 to the present, and the older recordings sound just like the cleaned-up older recordings that they are.

I would also personally have enjoyed more "secondary" music themes (otherwise it becomes like reading book summaries that always only quote the opening paragraph), and I could easily have done without the "pop" tunes (like Baby Elephant Walk and the Rugrats theme). In fact, it would have been very nice to listen to an album comprised of tracks chosen for their strong musical value rather than apparently for their box office and/or hit song popularity. But, to be fair, that may be precisely what draws some people to this CD set.

Film score music constitutes the single most significant body of classical music of our time. I hope some of these tracks will entice listeners to buy entire soundtracks and listen to some of these works as a whole.

4 out of 5 stars LOVE IT .......2007-06-11

This CD besides its sensuality has very exquisite mixes of classical songs with such a magestic twist that makes it irresistible not to put them on repeat. Besides the obvious beauty of the cover girl, again Claude Challe presents us a private yet accesible world into french sensuality.

5 out of 5 stars Great romantic gift!.......2007-02-15

Gave this to my husband for Valentine's Day, and it really put both of us in a romantic mood last night. It comes with a video at the end of it, which we'll watch late at night sometime soon, while the kids are in bed. So I'm sorry that I can't comment on the video portion just yet.

When our 15-year-old daughter found the album cover with the nude pictures of the actress, she screamed "Do you want Dad to cheat on you?" Actually, this album is going to decrease the chance of him cheating. If a guy is as happy at home as my hubby was last night, he WON'T go looking for it someplace else!

5 out of 5 stars Another exceptionally beautiful CD from Claude Challe.......2006-11-02

I have nearly all of Claude Challe's CDs and this is one of my favourites.

Stylistically, although most of his CDs are of the chill out / down-tempo genre, they're all slightly different. This one is just draw droppingly beautiful. The tracks on this CD are erotic, sensual, breathtaking.

I am astounded that someone can put out such consistently good releases. His track selection on this CD and most of his others is exquisite, and they're perfectly mixed together to take you on a journey. It takes a major talent to do this once, yet to do it with almost every release you put out is simply astounding. Yes, they're expensive, although you can buy nearly all of them without any risk of buying a dud. You wont end up saying, 'I liked tracks 1-4, but the rest were rubbish'.

Don't be put off by the fact that this is a single disc release and his others are doubles. This is one of my favourite CDs in my entire collection and of the hundreds of CDs I've heard in this genre. It would easily make it onto my desert island selection. Other favourites of his are Happiness, Sun, Flying Carpet, and Nirvana Lounge, although I have most and can highly recommend them all. (I've made two list mania's which have 50+ other CDs in this genre that are exceptional recordings that I believe are well worth the money, some you may be familiar with, others you probably will not, so if you're interested, click my reviewer name and check them out.)

My highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars a emotional selection.......2006-03-22

I hear the cd when it arrived and i guess that my intuition go on ok. the cd its sensual, quiet, moods, interesting, mixing and textured. the voices are atractives, they call to think and rest. you can buy this cd without fear to be wrong.

5 out of 5 stars romance delux.......2005-07-04

This music is so beautiful. I was laying in the afternoon sun with my CD on and I could imagine myself on the beach with the wind bringing me music from the resort near by that is busy with beautiful people. Bronzed skin with the hint of pink from the full day. This music, like all of Claude Challe's music, takes me out of middle of america unto a soul adventure that lifts my spirits and soothes my restlessness. Calming, romantic and erotic. I own most of Claude Challe and I am a big fan, none of his Cd's that I have bought have been alike, and I own at least 4 of his. I plan on having all of his CD's, his work is stunning and different, no one comes close. Stop reading and be come an addict like me (laughs).
This Cd and most of his work is awesome at a retail store's also. I have people ask me all the time who I am listening to.

3 out of 5 stars These are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks.......2007-01-21

I was disappointed that these are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks. For example, in Colonel Bogey, the countermarch from the movie soundtrack is not included in the arrangement on this CD. Don't get me wrong, the songs are good, but I would have preferred the same arrangements as the original movies.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding compilation.......2006-08-25

This compilation is superb and a real must-buy. From Band of Brothers to A Bridge Too Far: every war movie theme is represented here. An all time classic.

3 out of 5 stars The really good ones are missing........2005-07-18

While this compilation has some masterpieces such as the theme from The Great Escape and Is Paris Burning, it's missing some of the finest tracts ever written. Where is the theme from Victory and Ernest Gold's stirring epic from Cross of Iron? The closing theme from Inchon was also a feast for the ears, but it's not here. It was written by Jerry Goldsmith, one of the foremost soundtrack composers of our time. Instead we're subjected to the likes of Hanover Street and The English Patient. I'll admit Inchon and Victory weren't Academy Award winning movies, but their soundtracks were second to none. As John Stossel would say," Give me a break"!!!

5 out of 5 stars "many were winners by the Academy for best scores".......2004-05-26

Silva America presents the essential in film music during the period of World Wars ~ "Longest Day:Ultimate World War Movie Theme", featuring some long forgotten cues, 53 to be exact that sent chills and thrills into the pulses of world events ~ selections from a limited collectors edition that would make any "film-score-buff" green with envy.

Released to commemorate the sixth Anniversary of D-Day, never has there ever been such a tribute compilation package from any other label and Silva comes to the forefront ~ featuring The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra (Paul Bateman, Nic Raine Tony Bremner and Carl Davis as conductors), The Philharmonia (Kenneth Alwyn, Jerry Goldsmith, Mario Klemens and Paul Bateman as conductors) and also the world renown Crouch End Festival Chorus (David Temple as choir master) ~ what a gathering of talented musicians and singers fill this collection supreme.

The lineup of composers is a Who's Who in the world of film music ~ John Addison, Tomaso Albinoni, Kenneth J. Alford, Paul Anka, John Barry, Arnold Bax, Elmer Bernstein, Eric Coates, Carl Davis, Klaus Doldinger, Antonin Dvorak, Benjamin Frankel, Gerald Fried, Hugo Friedhofer, Jerry Goldsmith, Ron Goodwin, Bernard Herrmann, Maurice Jarre, Michael Kamen, Jerome Moross, Alfred Newman, Clifton Parker, Alan Rawsthorne, Ryvichi Sakamoto, Lalo Schifrin, Gerard Schurmann, David Shire, Max Steiner, Dimitri Tiomkin, Ralph Vaughan Williams, John Williams, Gabriel Yared and Hans Zimmer ~ set the stage for compositional human drama while exploring the deepest troves of musical emotion ~ one masterpiece after another, each cue manages to display both a convincing authenticity of the times and places ~ experience every tracks passion and skill for striking the exotic orchestral colors, explosive power and spectacular works of full large scale orchestral arrangements previal at every turn.

We are grateful to James Fitzpatrick (producer), Reybnold da Silva (executive producer), Rick Clark (associate producer/album sequence), Marion Garden (associate producer) and the whole gang at Silva America who have resurrected many of the soundtracks for the "film-score-buffs" in all of us.

5 out of 5 stars Complementing Mr. Kaminsky's review.......2006-06-14

My Profile: 42 yo (2006) sales engineer.

Please refer to Mr. Kamisnky's beautiful and accurate review of this wonderful album.

As and admirer of Vangelis extense and diverse work, I followed with curiosity his partnering with Yes vocalist Jon Anderson and was not at all impressed with their previous work until Private Collection. In here we are faced with heavenly music (on the vinyl record it was side A) which reveals inspired lyrisms and romance (Deborahs song), yet the true masterpice lies in Horizons (Side B), here we have a monumental masterpice where Vangelis shows us what he is able of and takes us through various stages (..like a shakesperian play..)taking us to heights we only envisioned in Bladerunner... in conclusion, for all of you who were not convinced with Jon & Vangelis this is the work you need to hear

5 out of 5 stars Deborah is the beautiful song.......2004-01-04

I bought this album becuase the Deborah song. The song its very artistic. The other song such us Horizon is take 22 minutes and good for you while you working your homework. Its stimulate you do you work.

4 out of 5 stars Nice tecno-new age collaboration.......2003-09-06

Two different talents work together for this little gem of early 80's pop that include some quiet and nice atmospheres from Vangelis's keyboards and the emotional voice of Jon Anderson, a very prolific man in collaborations.

The first song, 'Italian Song' is almost a lullaby and has a haunting feeling that makes you feel really moved. he child in you will appear. 'When The Night Comes' is a very quiet and sexy song and the lyrics approach the theme of sex in a very proper and gentle way. 'Deborah' is kind of another lullaby, sung as from a letter to a little girl, it's deeply moving and tender as well. Polonaise is a slow song but finishes with a beautiful climax of drums, piano and the always expressive voice of Anderson. And so, the best track in the album, 'He is Sailing'. It brings very mysterious and religious motives to the words and the driving rythm really has energy. It seems a chant of hoping for the newcoming of Jesus, although I'm not completely sure about it. It is a greatly original and powerful theme.

The very long 'Horizon' seems to be a wish of peace from war time, feels really apocaliptic and combines almost silent parts with some glorious and big ones. The album works as a whole, and the tenderness and beauty of all the tracks get added to the meaningful and transcendental condition of the lyrics written by Anderson.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, classic Jon and Vangelis.......2003-06-07

"Private Collection" is an apt title, since I find most of the music of Jon and Vangelis to be a private pleasure, shared with few other people in my life. When I've tried to "connect" friends and family to the sound, I often hear "Oh, that's very pretty"--I've long since figured out that you either "get" Jon and Vangelis or you don't, there's no middle ground. From the opening track, "Italian Song," it is clear this is a very quiet, gentle work, with Jon Anderson's voice beautifully complementing Vangelis' rich aural landscapes. It is only gradually that the power and intensity of the CD becomes apparent. "And When the Night Comes," the second track, evokes the sweeter, softer portions of "The Friends of Mr. Cairo," especially in the borrowed lyric: "So just remember this, / A kiss is just a kiss, / A smile is just a smile." Anderson's lyrics often suggest a love of cinematic fantasy, as we had already sensed in "The Friends . . ." album. Lest the second track become overly maudlin, it ends with a sexy, sultry saxophone sound (reminiscent of the saxophone in the "Blade Runner" soundtrack). The third track, "Deborah," is classic, beautiful, emotional Jon and Vangelis. It doesn't really matter that I happen to think it is the best track Jon and Vangelis have ever created: the song is like the very essence of wistfulness and longing. It is, in my opinion, one of the greatest love songs I've ever heard, and gives me goosebumps every time I hear it (particularly the keyboard work which closes the piece). Amazing! The fourth track, "Polonaise," starts off very gently and understated, and slowly builds to a crashing, multi-layered, percussive crescendo, before tapering off to a quiet, very personal coda. There are religious references aplenty in the song, and all over the CD, but the song is really about finding peace and harmony. The fifth track is the long, syncopated "He is Sailing," another song packed with arcane religious references. It has a lovely fluidity to it, like Vangelis' earlier "To an Unknown Man" or even the "Titles" track from "Chariots of Fire." More than in the other pieces, in "He is Sailing" Anderson's voice is merely one element of the soundscape, not really at the foreground of it.

The sixth track, which is really like the second half of the CD, is the 22-minute "Horizon," which is darker and more foreboding than the previous five tracks. It opens with a rhythm similar to the intriguing titles for "The Bounty." The message of this long, meandering piece can be summed up in the repeated refrain "Peace will come / Come true Horizon." The pseudo-religious elements are reflected in the overlapping choral layers, stabs of organ-like keyboard, and pealing bells in the song. Midway through the track, the insistent background layers fall away, the tempo slows and becomes more ethereal. Perhaps this is the musical equivalent of reaching the horizon described. There is a gorgeous keyboard solo as in Vangelis' earlier "Heaven and Hell," which included one of his first collaborations with Jon Anderson. The slower, more spare arrangement perfectly suits the mood of this very "private" CD, as Jon Anderson's vocal returns. At this point, the lyrics express it best: "Sweet music, and your secret heart, / Both have the healing grace." The songs pivots on this lyric, and suddenly grows darker and more brooding, and almost seems to stop. Anderson's vocals return, full of hope and desire. In the final two minutes of the track, all of the disparate elements come together in the urgent, heartfelt sentiment: "All in all I just can't help but believe there is a way / For us to give. A way for us to live." This CD is a remarkable musical achievement, and that it wasn't a commercial success like "The Friends of Mr. Cairo" surprises me.

5 out of 5 stars This is what I call a classic........2002-02-27

4 out of 5 stars More Treasure From the Vault.......2007-03-08

There are a lot of musicians whose music I bought when I was a kid that I still buy 35-40 years later. But few of them have been as productive through the years as John Mayall. Except for the 50+ CDs I own of Astor Piazzolla, no musician comes close to adding so many recordings to my collection as John Mayall does. Here the guy is 73 years old and he's still working as if he were young and hungry. Then besides all the new CDs he regularly issues, there are those that seem to appear regularly from his archives.
The Private Collection turns out to be yet more treasure from the vault. Despite owning at least 90% of Mayall's known output, I have never heard him on most of these songs which were recorded at shows in the early 1970s (Disc 1) and the early 1980s (Disc 2). So that gave me one reason to buy this. Then there is the consideration that a live John Mayall show is always a treat, so that gave me a second reason. And when I saw that his bands here contained such greats as Blue Mitchell, Keef Hartley, Mick Taylor, and John McVie that sealed the deal.
I like pretty much the entire set with the exception of the fading out of an interesting rendition of Room to Move right at the point the song moved from extended explorations into familiar musical territory. I won't say that this is the best CD that Mayall ever issued, but I will say that he allows his musicians free rein to express themselves fully within the framework of the compositions. This has resulted in quite a few enjoyable solos that add value to the listening experience.
For John Mayall fans, all the above positives, the unbeatable price and an attractive, informative booklet make The Private Collection a set not to miss.

5 out of 5 stars John Mayall live rarities....must have for fans!.......2007-01-17

The Recall version of The Private Collection that I purchased is actually a 2-CD set. It is identical to the French release of Rolling With The Blues, but it doesn't include the 3rd disc, which is a DVD interview with John Mayall.

This is awesome, vintage John Mayall & friends live performances from 1972-1973 (disc 1) & 1980-1982 (disc 2). Truly superb Mayall performances that every fan should have.

This is rare, raw live Mayall. One disc of Mayall featuring the Blue Mitchell line-up, live and superb; one disc of pure raw Mayall energy!!! No duplication in any of this material with what has been previously available.

5 out of 5 stars A Bach rarity........2001-10-01

Being a great Horowitz fan, I just had to find out how the master would fare in a non-transcribed Bach work.

Just like Michelangeli, Horowitz was of the opinion that a pianist should study the whole reperoire, but be selective in the works to be played in front of an audience.

While his Bach-Busonis do not represent the heights of his discography -just compare with Lipatti-, I do consider Horowitz' Scarlatti as one of the milestones in the history of recorded sound.

So how is the Bach? Very interesting!

We are currently in the (post-)authentic era. After the romantics like Horowitz and Fischer, the objectivists like Walcha and Karl Richter, the authenticists like Leonhardt and Harnoncourt, we are currently in a post-paradigmatic stage. It took them a while, but even the Gilberts, Koopmans, van Asperens, Tans, etc. etc. have finally figured out that their "authentic" approach was often more romanticized, than the one they despised in their predecessors. For those in doubt just listen to this performance.

Comparing Horowitz' Toccata to versions by Gould and Argerich highlights what a skilled and original artist he was. This Toccata represents an early work of the greatest master and often substitutes theatrical drama for more mature contrapunctual skill. This is ofcourse right down Horowit' alley. He plays the piece highly imaginative, dramatic, and with great clarity. A true blockbuster.

This recording highlights how modern Horowitz was. He is often portrayed as the last romantic, but just compare this Bach to Rachmaninov's Sarabande of Bach's fourth Partita in the complete Rach. recordings.

All the other works are available in technically better versions that I strongly prefer based on the dismal sonics of this disc.

Buy this disc. The Bach by itself warrants the price of admission.

4 out of 5 stars Stunning Live Performances from Horowitz.......2001-05-15

Starting in 1945, Vladimir Horowitz engaged the Carnegie Hall Recording Company to record all of his solo recitals in that venue. He paid for the recordings himself, and discontinued them after 1950, when RCA began recording his concerts there. Horowitz would listen to the 78RPM and long-playing discs from time to time, usually at the request of one of his students. He seems to have lost interest in them in the 1960s, and they were stored away in the top floor of his New York townhouse. In 1986, while he was getting his affairs in order, he came upon the discs and donated them to Yale, alma mater of his friend and record producer Tom Frost. After Horowitz died in 1989, Frost listened to all thirteen recitals, and realized that the performances merited public release. In the end, it was decided to release only compositions which were not otherwise in Horowitz' discography, two CDs worth of material.

This performance of the Toccata, BWV 911, is the only available recording of Horowitz playing "untouched" Bach. He brings an almost Gouldian clarity to the proceedings, with a uniquely Horowitzian angst.

The Clementi pieces are played with a larger dynamic range than is customary with music of this period. The Sonata in A, Op. 36, No. 1 features a gentle Allegro and a rollicking Presto. These performances, from 1949-50 disprove the legend that Horowitz "discovered" Clementi while recovering from his 1953 nervous breakdown.

Horowitz rarely Played Chopin's Fantasie, Op. 49 in public, and this recording demonstrates why. The pianist is at his worst here, torturing rhythm, phrasing, and structure. Nor is he as on top of the piece technically as one would expect. If it weren't for the surface noise of this 1948 recording, one would easily guess this was the "mad-scientist" Horowitz of the late 1970s. The other Chopin works fare much better, and sound like Horowitz' typical Chopin playing of the time: bold, large-scaled, technically immaculate performances.

The Liszt and Mendelssohn pieces are played with simplicity and grace, with some miraculous chord-voicing in the Liszt Consolations.

The Rachmaninoff Etude-tableau, which concludes the CD, is played in a declamatory, riveting fashion, with a central section which comes dangerously close to veering out of control.

The sound varies considerably, from the faded Mendelssohn to the nearly pristine Liszt. Horowitz played some of these recordings relatively often, while others he apparently ignored. Since Horowitz' copies of these recordings are the only ones known to exist, we have to accept them surface noise and all. At least we have the comfort of knowing the scratches were made by the Maestro himself.

    5 out of 5 stars The Laboratory.......2000-12-13

This is the CD I finally had to get after only having cassette dubs of a bunch of the private recordings of Ellington's vault, as played on Danish Radio when Mercer lived in Copenhagen. Although I have more outtakes than this CD provides, nothing beats having this material on CD for sheer quality. Duke wrote some great material for the first part of this CD known as the Degas Suite, which was written for a documentary on the artist. This features the 1968 band, especially some rare Willie Cook musings that are not heard anywhere else in this type of context. But it is the River, a ballet written expressley for the Alivn Ailey Ballet Company, that is actually the summary of Duke's Autobiography in music. Despite the fact that these performances are in reality sketches and rather unpolished runthroughs, they are still the only 'Ducal' renditions of some of his most breathtaking pieces.
