Editorial Reviews
From URB Magazine
Apparently, Brighton, UK, is to downtempo what Detroit is to techno, such is the plethora of chill-funk acts like Bonobo and Chungking that fill its pubs and clubs. Backini, on the upstart but already vital Lumenessence label, is more sample-heavy and uptempo than most of these artists, often reminiscent of the feel-good bits from Mr Scruff's self-titled debut on Ninja Tune, full of pre-war vibes and catchy hooks. There's nothing new or unusual on Threads but no matter, Backini's Rob Quickenden has an ear for a melody and a trunk full of old records to make them with as evidenced on the marvellous "Pyramid" and "Company B-Boy." He enlists Jane Bartholomew to croon dreamily on "Where RU," while prodigious jungle dude JFB cuts and scratches over the darker "Dreamer" and "Strung Out." Woven together, these things make Threads impossible to dislike.
