Editorial Reviews
URB
Daum Bentley, one of the progenitors of the SF progressive funk sound ... returns here in his Freaky Chakra guise for his second Astralwerks album. He's kept an open mind ... and this LP shows the work of a maturing artist.... From the dance floor electro tactics ... and the metallic crunch ... he's gone beyond the trancier style ... which shows his keen interest in minimal techno.

Option
Thunderous whips of stock sound treated to simple monotonous time signatures don't exercise the senses. If anything, they paralyze the mind and fool it into a appreciating the big, fat, reliably empty crunch of basic digital stomp.

4 out of 5 stars Some of my all-time favorite tracks by anyone.......2004-02-13

This is one of my go-to albums (yes, CDs are still albums), something I play when I'm feeling low or reminiscant. You might be thinking "That's kindof strange dude - this is a techno album" but that's the thing, it really isn't. Yes there are some danceable beats and loops, and some really intrigueing programming and sampling (scifi rips, Darth Vadar) but the music does have an emotional quality to it. At several points the electronic complexity is gradually transformed into a melody that sounds like a heartfelt message of hope or human-sympathy. Especially notable in this respect are "Hyperspace" and "Blacklight Fantasy".

I know this sounds corny, but get over that cold exterior you techno-head and listen to this CD. If you feel nothing by the time it's done, then I guess you really are a machine. Feel free to go back to your Chemical Brothers.

The ONLY reason I can't give it 5 stars is because I find myself consistently skipping the first 5 songs and listening to the backend of the album. Not that the first 5 are awefull by any means, they just don't have the heart of tracks 6-12.

5 out of 5 stars time has proved this album essential.......2003-11-11

In my view, this album from 1998 has withstood the test of time these last five years in a way that few techno/electro albums from that period have. The sounds are timeless, the beats are inventive even now, and this album packs a psychadelic wallop once it sucks you into the grooves about halfway through. It evolves and unfolds in an unhurried manner, though, so you're almost not aware of where the sound has taken you until you poke your head up out of the darkness and survey the surrounding soundscape. I don't know what substance flowed in the veins of a previous reviewer who said this record hearkens back to the 70's and reagan, but it sure wasn't the RIGHT substance.

Since this album was released, no finer fusion of techno, electro, progressive house and funk has reached my ears.

5 out of 5 stars top 10 of my collection.......2002-01-06

I don't understand people that think this cd is boring or repetitive!? What techno are they listening to? Maybe they had their headphones plugged into the wrong jack. Maybe they've never been to a club, and can't visuallize their bodies torqueing to these great beats (I'm bouncing along to it right now as I type ... it's hard to keep the fingers on the keyboard).

I have to concur with the previous comments about hard organic funky beats. Track 2 is the funkiest thing around, especially that pseudo-Speak-n-Spell break. Get this CD if you like electro ala Uberzone.

5 out of 5 stars excellent electro workout.......2001-07-30

I can't understand anyone that says this cd is boring. This is one the best cds in my collection. The beats are organic and metallic simultaneously and just flow perfectly. If you like a highly electronic sound that is funky, get it.

5 out of 5 stars This is possibly the best CD i bought in "98"!!.......1999-04-08

I like this CD so much because it straddles the lines between industrial and electronica. More aggressive then most techno tripe i.e "plastikman" and more interesting to boot! "Dreams" is as creepy as it gets. This is definately a must for someone who wants beats without the wimpy drivel!
