5 out of 5 stars Simply Greg Brown's Best.......2006-02-13

Many of us think this is Greg Brown's best album. Reasonable minds can differ, of course, but they have to get around the extraordinary imagery of the title cut, the plaintive story sketched in "Laughing River" and the deceptively simple melody line of "Spring Wind."

Yesterday I had a vision, under the tree where we first talked
Of an old couple burning their love letters
So their children won't be shocked.

Songs of love and disappointment, hope and loss, as well as the messy business of life. Never self-pitying, brutally honest, with melodies that can sear the lyrics into your mind.

I came down with a sickness; I thought you were the cure
But passion seems to promise more
Than friendship can endure.

Greg Brown doesn't have any bad albums. But some are a little better than the rest. And this is simply the cream of the crop. My very highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars Great voice, great music,, great imagery..........2005-08-08

Ah, I love this guy! Brown's voice can go from back-of-the-bar room gravely to plaintative soprano... The music goes from folky to country to bluesy and is always great. The imagery in his songs are fantastic too -- some creepy rural themes, like the soundtrack to an Andrew Wyeth painting (ie. "Sleeper".) The song "Dream Cafe" makes me feel like I'm in an open air restaurant in Arizona... Which is odd because I've never been to Arizona... Case in point, this guy can do imagery...

5 out of 5 stars greghead.......2004-07-20

This album is amazing. I was immediately taken by Sleeper, and from that point on, just wowing...!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Dream Cafe.......2003-06-05

Insightful and inspirational. Quit reading this and buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Greg lets his finest come to your ears...........2003-01-04

If you are familiar with Greg Brown, you probably are familiar with this release. If you don't have it, get it and treat yourself to an experience that take you on a journey of loves lost and loves to come. For those who are curious about Greg's work, this is an excellent place to start. There is not a bad cut here, and in particular, "Dream Cafe", "Spring Wind" and "Laughing River" are a trio of songs that somehow work some sort of magic into allowing me to see into life a bit deeper for a period of time. Two other releases that go along well with this are "Further In" and "The Poet Game."

4 out of 5 stars Would you like ketchup with your bug?.......2007-05-05

The person who sang O Mio Babbino Caro is Carmen Monarcha. Do a search for her on YouTube; she's really fantastic!

Anyway, I saw Andre Rieu on a PBS special on television and it looked like such an awesome, high-energy concert! The CD is not so exciting, but it is worth buying just for that beautiful aria.

5 out of 5 stars Live in Dublin.......2006-07-05

This concert is magnificent in its energy and in the great performances by Andre Rieu and the Johann Stauss orchestra. I watch it when I need lifting up. I love the audience interaction which makes me feel as if I'm there in person.

5 out of 5 stars Live audience is great........2006-05-03

This has to be one of Andre's best. The live audience adds much to the music being played. I wish I had been there for the performance.

Ohhhhh, what's that fantastic disk. No comment, it fabulous disk.
Thanks Mr. Anouar.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2004-03-29

This is my first experience with oud music, and I have to say I love it very much. This is a very relaxing CD, and I plan to buy more of Brahem's music. The only thing I would say contrary is that the clarinet is too overpowering at times. I have to turn my volume down a tad. But on songs like 'Parfum de Gitane' the instrument sounds perfect and magical. Thanks for the great CD.

4 out of 5 stars A Fusion Success.......2004-01-25

I was searching for contemporary Arab music when I ran across this gem. Inspired by the music of the 'stans of Central Asia, this disc pairs Anouar Brahem's astounding oud playing with a clarinet and Moroccan drums (bendir and darbouka). The resulting fusion succeeds surprisingly well, comparable to the achievements in a different genre of Radio Tarife. Some of the tracks have a jazz quality reminiscent, at moments, of Benny Goodman. The highlight however is the unique title piece, which appears on two different tracks.

On the down side, I still find the first piece (by the clarinetist Barbaros Erkose) disappointing, even after repeated listening. Moreover, the clarinet is over modulated in a few spots. With these exceptions, the music and the sound quality are both superb. This disc will reward the listener with a wealth of detail when played on a good audio system.

5 out of 5 stars a taste of exotica.......2003-12-24

This still certainly rates as jazz, but just as much it gives the impression of a visit to... --well, uh, a cafe in Astrakan. Especially atmospheric is the clarinet play of sideman Barbaros Erkose, which produces just the right emphasis of exotica to complement Brahem's virtuostic oud play (is there a greater student of this instrument now recording?) and the unobtrusive backing percussion (bendir and darbouka). This is a tuneful but rather laid back kind of jazz, occasionally giving itself over to flashes of brilliant play. It sounds more than just a bit mysterious, but it is a naked mystery. Stripped of the kind of mood cliches one often hears in the soundtracks to bad films about Arabic lands, this music reveals some of the emotional secrecies that can be found at the heart of the cultures it strives to portray.

5 out of 5 stars Traditional music from a Master.......2003-08-31

I own around 1200 CDs, and I consider myself an expert in international music. This one CD stands out among a very few in my collection. I am going to try to describe it, but I won't be able to do justice; I can't find the right words. This fully instrumental CD (no singing) takes you to a magical land and recreates centuries of middle eastern imagery in the mind of the listener. This is not a CD like "Simon Shaheen"'s modernistic approach to Middle Eastern music. This is "traditional Middle East" with perfect harmony and perfect performance. I have played this CD hundreds of times since I purchased it. And I still love it like the very first time.

This collection could be described as "bellydance with twist" as every track is energetic, catchy and lusty but also chilled-out and mysterious. While the rhythm sections certainly let it all hang out, there's just a bit held back, whether in the vocals, strings or woodwinds, not unlike the way a female raks sharki (the traditional name for the genre) dancer will flaunt undulating hips and six-pack abs while veiling her face or upper body. Historically, while no family celebration or evening in a café was complete without them, women who plied this trade faced varying degrees of social ostracism. This was partly because their profession gave them a certain degree of independence, which threatened the status quo of the male-dominated cultures they hailed from. But in modern Syria, Turkey, Egypt, Morocco, Greece, Lebanon and other countries, these ladies are for the most part recognized as the rigorously trained, exquisitely disciplined artists they have always been. Their relationship with the musicians they work with is one of equals, an uncommonly empathetic, shared act of creation not unlike that of flamenco dancers and their bands. Perhaps this is why, while listening to the tunes, sinuous, gyrating figures continuously appear at the corner of the mind's eye, fashioning wave-like susurrations around complex syncopations, goading their collaborators to ever more feverish heights. --Christina Roden

2 out of 5 stars Not enough variety for my liking.......2007-06-27

I did not particularly enjoy this CD. I was looking for something with more variety and found there to be not enough of the gentler, more mysterious & earthy music that I personally enjoy listening to and dancing to.

4 out of 5 stars A must for beginners !.......2007-05-16

It's really difficult to find a good compilation and that one seems to be a good one! I don't buy this CD because I still have most of the tracks. But for begginers in bellydance and for people who wish to discover the different styles of the music from Middle East, it's a good choice.

5 out of 5 stars Still delivers with the best.......2006-08-02

If you talk about the 60s and 70s, I believe the two most underrated groups are Spirit and the Blues Project, both of which were very jazzy for the taste of the epoch and so much more sophisticated than the commercial music.

I bought this CD to see if I would still like it. You hear so much music from the 60s to the 90s all over the radio. Some sounds rancid and some sublime.

I loved this album when it first came out. (My friend Chris Winfield who is now an artist, turned me on to them as he did to much jazz, classical and blues.) They were among my favorite groups then and remain so.

I have to say that I loved Flute thing and a few instrumentals which are not included here but no one can perform every track in concert.

Listening now, I especially enjoy Alberta and Violets of Dawn, very poetic with that certain offness which Verlaine recommends for poetry. (I can't even recommend Verlaine so much since so many other French poets exceed him by far but he did write some amazing poems on how poetry should work.)

So, if you want pure poetry in the form of music, get this CD.

5 out of 5 stars For me, this was the first............2006-03-22

High school was ending. College beckoned. And music was about to explode: Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver, Grateful Dead, Rolling Stones, The Who, Bob Dylan. For me, the first taste of it came from the Blues Project. This album, their first, was recorded live, on a four-track, and freshness, spontaneity, and sheer fun leap out from the speakers with amazing clarity all things considered. The later studio work from this group does not have the spark found in this one. If you enjoyed this compilation years ago, buy it again and you won't be disappointed - you will also enjoy the liner notes. If you have never heard it, and want to experience how a golden era of music began, get it. A treat awaits.

1 out of 5 stars Not suitable for airplay.......2006-12-13

I'll be honest: I'm not a fan of Fred Eaglesmith but since I am a researcher for a local community radio station (which means I get to preview the music and make suggestions) I had to listen to it. I held off reviewing it for as long as I could for obvious reasons. There wasn't a single cut that didn't make me want to slash my wrists with a rusty spoon. All the selections are too long, the subject matter from beginning to end is only suitable for consuming alcholic beverages while carrying loaded firearms and there is just too much going on on the background all the time.

It could be that I'm just an old geezer that refuses to change with the times and to an extent you're right. But when the opening cut on ANY album is five minutes long and sets the overall tone with such a dark image it's hard to be impressed.

5 out of 5 stars a bittersweet gem.......2006-11-19

old and smoky, sweet and tangy;like the best bbq and bourbon whiskey ;millies cafe, the newest fred eagleton release is a primary pleasure.i have only just heard him and could notbe happier with both his incisive lyrics and his classic country melodies.every song is good and several are gems.for all you john prine and townes van zandt fans, get this record now,you will not be sorry.

4 out of 5 stars gruff, romantic, real country rock.......2006-09-02

I bought this on impulse with the new Toby Keith and I gotta say, it's a find. Eaglesmith has a heart-tugging way with a song. It's not lite music at all, it's real roots country and it hits hard. It's moving and has lots of great instruments playing like mandolins and harmonicas and guitars and piano and they're all really good and with the vocals, awesome. I like his powerfil voice and how the guitars all move the songs along, and I like the twangy stuff like "Hank Williams" and the southwestern title track. It's fun finding a new singer to love! I'm going to be singing "Summer is Over and My Baby's Gone" all week! I'm not a good reviewer but this whole CD reminds me of taking a great vacation to a little place in Texas and stopping into some bar and finding the best music.

5 out of 5 stars The best of latin music through Domingo's voice.......1999-08-10

This CD goes wherever I go, it is with no doubt, the queen of my collection. Medleys are wonderfully orchestrated and arranged and every song makes you travel anywhere between Mexico and Buenos Aires. Here, Domingo's voice is more like a musical instrument than anything else and each song you'll discover a new instrument. Honestly, I would personally award it six stars.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Latin American tunes beautifully sung and produced,.......1998-12-11

Domingo's love for traditional Latin American music shines throughout this CD. A selection of great "standards", beautifully arranged and recorded by one of the world's great voices. "De Mexico a Buenos Aires," written by Domingo's son is the one original song on the recording and is one of many highlights here. 5 out of 5 stars 25 Sentimental Favorites.......2000-06-19

I used to think that classical music is boring, but this CD has changed my mind. The first time I listened to this CD I said, its OK. Later every time I listen to it I discover a new beautiful music. I feel calm and relaxed. I mostly liked the Borodin, Mozart and Faure songs. It is really 25 sentimental favorites. Now, many titles of the 25 "?" Favorites are on my wish list....

Donovan, the British folkie and poor man's Bob Dylan best known for '60s and '70s Flower Power opuses like "Season of the Witch" and "Sunshine Superman," takes a slightly self-indulgent but utterly intriguing turn here on his first album in eight years. Backed by a deft band of ace session musicians, Donovan serves up a spacey, electronica-laden tribute to one of his most enduring influences: the Beat poets (Ginsberg, Burroughs, et. al.) of yesteryear. A few of these cuts, like "Two Lovers," "Yin My Yang," and "The Question," are merely dazzling word play set to hot licks. But others--"Poor Man's Sunshine," "Lord of the Universe," and "Do Not Go Gentle" (a hip-hoppish variation on a famous Dylan Thomas poem)--resonate with the eerie power of spacey elevator music from U2's loopy Zooropa phase while briefly showcasing Donovan in all the whispery, flower-draped splendor of his salad days. -- Bob Allen

Album Description

That shimmering, intimate voice . . . the poetic, seductive lyrics . . . the dreamy, hazy music that surrounds them . . . From folksinger to flower-child to timeless musical poet, Donovan and his distinctive, magical songs have become familiar to decades of music fans since the early Sixties through hit singles like "Mellow Yellow," "Sunshine Superman," "The Hurdy Gurdy Man," "Catch the Wind," "Colours," "There is a Mountain" and "Atlantis," in TV and movie soundtracks and commercials, and on a precious, infrequent trickle of new releases.

"Beat Café" is the first new Donovan CD for grown-ups since 1996's "Sutras" ("The Pied Piper," a children's CD, was issued in 2002). While "Sutras," produced and released by Rick Rubin (Johnny Cash, the Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Mick Jagger) emphasized Donovan's folk roots, "Beat Café" is an extension of the heady rock/folk/pop/jazz/blues/world music brew that has become Donovan's trademark.

To capture the spirit of the Bohemian café happenings dating back to 1840s Paris that combined philosophy, poetry and free thought and inspired this CD, Donovan enlisted multiple Grammy-winner John Chelew (Blind Boys of Alabama, Richard Thompson, John Hiatt) as producer and keyboardist and the world-class rhythm section of folk/jazz double bassist and longtime Donovan accompanist Danny Thompson (Nick Drake, Richard Thompson, The Pentangle, John Martyn) and drummer/percussionist Jim Keltner (Bob Dylan, Ry Cooder, George Harrison, many more). Applying a "no fixed arrangements" approach to foster the proper mood of spontaneity, Donovan (vocals, guitars) and his cohorts have created a lusciously atmospheric collection of eleven new original Donovan compositions plus a cover of the folk standard "The Cuckoo."

This "beat café" of the mind is a sensuous, smoky den of fevered seduction (the hypnotic "Love Floats," "Yin My Yang," "Two Lovers," "Whirlwind"), jazzy, finger-snapping hipness ("Poorman's Sunshine" and the title song), death-mocking blues ("Lord of the Universe"), and gentle spirituality ("Shambhala," "Do Not Go Gentle," the latter song an adaptation of Dylan Thomas's famous poem). The contemporary production values meld mystic chants, teasing wordplay, tender meditations and warm musical telepathy into a reaffirmation of Donovan's status as a unique and vibrant musical visionary.

2 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2007-07-05

I heard a cut over the radio, and thought it was worth looking into. Don't waste your money on this one. Very poppy, stupid lyrics, totally uninspiring. What happened to the artist who tried "To Catch the Wind?"
I guess he got old and boring. What a shame!

4 out of 5 stars Very, Very Cool.......2006-03-24

Since "Sutras" his astounding comeback album rated five stars, I have to rate this one only four stars as it's not QUITE as good (and half stars aren't allowed). But make no mistake, it's still very, very cool.

It's so amazing that Donovan is back and sounds as good as he does, 40 years after I first discovered him. And he's not some nostalgia act; he's doing important new groundbreaking work! He sounds great too.

"Beat Cafe" finds him swaggering with an acoustic trio in deliberately "hip" arrangements which, in lesser hands, could have been cloying. But this is never overplayed, never broad, never tongue-in-cheek -- just a very relaxed set of neo-beatnik grooves which he, alone among his contemporaries, has the cachet to perform with authenticity.

Did I mention cool?

5 out of 5 stars Donovan gets sexy!.......2006-02-06

I first listened to this CD with my wife in the car as we were driving the Mass Pike on a sunny Saturday morning, heading for Maine. I didn't quite know what to expect this trip, but I was not prepared for (and yet pleasantly surprised by) this deeply sensual set of tracks. Just amazing! Donovan can still turn it on, approaching 60, and his voice is as timeless as ever, perhaps even smoother in his late middle age than ever before. "Love Floats," the lead-off track, is an outright seduction; "Yin My Yang" sounds like a Tao-themed come-on ('twould make Confucius blush!); "The Question" is groovy and mystical with the Hammond B-3 low and secretive in the mix.

Suffice it to say that my wife and I could not stop touching each other while this CD was on, and were it possible for us to pull over and make hot, passionate love before continuing on, we'd have left the key turned to Accessory so that this music could have continued contributing to the sexy mood. Lastly, I'll add this--if you bring home a date and put this album on, and you *aren't* making breakfast for them the next morning, something went dreadfully wrong! Danny Thompson's sinuous bass work and Jim Keltner's tasteful drumming keep the whole thing moving along to your inevitable climax...pick it up today.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Cool and Tripper Vibe.......2005-09-28

Oooooh yeah...man. This is the good stuff. After hours and into the dawn. With or without shades.
Donovan's Temple is the place to be.
Thank you and...could we fill it up again? Soon?
Stay Free.

5 out of 5 stars High-Water Mark for Donovan.......2005-08-08

Sunshine Superman morphs into Bohemian Batman on this superb outing by Donovan. When I heard about the concept of this album -- Donovan trying to recreate the sound and ambiance of Soho beat cafe circa 1962 -- I thought it sounded like a desperate gimmick by a fading rock superstar. But it works big time, thanks in no small part to the dream-team support of accoustic bassist Danny Thompson (Richard Thompson, Pentangle) and solo-Beatles drummer Jim Keltner, who swing and sizzle along with Donovan's acoustic guitar grooves. The only thing that doesn't really work is the recitation of Dylan Thomas' "Do Not Go Gentle," (but it is a great theme for the record and one that Donovan seems to be taking to heart). Every other track on the album is a gem. This is Don's best album since the criminally overlooked Cosmic Wheels back in the early 1970s, and possibly the best of his 40-year career. I can't think of a single one my many favorite rock artists from the 1960s or 1970s (many of whom are still recording and performing) of whom I can say they trumped their catalog at close to age 60! Watch out world -- The Hurdy Gurdy Man is still crankin'!

4 out of 5 stars A wonderful wit..........2002-09-18

Christine Lavin gives her humerous opinions on everything from Prince Charles to office romance in this album. She shows that she has, not only a rare wit, but the intelligence to put that humor forth in a way that anyone who listens to her music will find infectuous. While there are a few slow moments on the album, her homage to bald-headed-men and her song "What Was I Thinking" make the album well worth it to add to any collection. This album will be especially loved by those who enjoy accoustic, folksey music with a message as opposed to those who like the "hip, three-minute dittys" that don't really say alot.

5 out of 5 stars fun, silly, poignant, and a great gift.......2000-10-17

Not only are Christine Lavin's lyrics brilliant & hilarious, but her melodies are catchy too. This CD is one of her very best... it captures her personality which really comes through during a live show. She definitely transcends the "folk" genre, and she has one of the cutest voices I have ever heard! I gave this CD to my mom last Christmas and then she ended up giving a copy to her sister on her birthday.

5 out of 5 stars Smart, original, different.......1999-03-16

A friend of mine left Christine Lavin's CD at my house one night, so I decided to listen to it. I have never laughed so hard in my life. In fact I'm listening to "What was I thinking right now" this is the only thing that cheers me up. I have tunred all of my friends on to her, and they thank me for telling them about it. She makes everything that you think actually make sense. Thanks Christine!

5 out of 5 stars I love, "What was I thinking?" It's me!!!.......1999-01-06

I heard "What Was I Thinking" on the way to the hospital on New Years Day. I laughed out loud! I'm been trying to find out who sang that so I could buy it and play it for all my friends! My compliments to the artist!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, enchanting as it is funny, a wonderful album.......1998-06-30

To hear Christine Lavin sing about her life, and of the lives around her, it is like listening to yourself, thinking outloud. She captures so much of what we don't want others to know we think, and does it so elegantly. The trick to Christine's ability is her soft and gentle singing voice and subtle charm. She eases you into listening with grace and with ease, and before you know it, you have listened to the album three times over. Her songwriting is original, quirky, provicative and fun, without testing the listeners limits. She has the ability to speak with great direction and strength, and loses no one in the process. It is amazing to think that she does not have the noteriety that The Indigo Girls or Sarah Mclachlan have, because she defintley fits into that catagory of performer. Please, take my word for it, Christine Lavin will make you laugh out loud, feel deeply emotional, think heavily, and maybe even turn off your T.V. and live life with a little bit of a spring in your step, buy her albums, you will be happy you did.
