5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2007-05-28

Beautiful collection... and one of the most beautiful portraits of Paul Simon I've seen. Does anyone know where I can get a poster of this album cover???

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Songwriter.......2003-12-30

Paul Simon is one of the most amazing and talented songwriters ever! I love this CD, it is really, really unique, and a joy to listen to! The best songs (in my personel opinion) are "Kodachrome" (so catchy I could listen to it for hours!) "Me & Julio Down By The Schoolyard" (great guitar! Can't get enough) "Still Crazy After All These Years" and, or course, the mega-successful "Graceland". But all the songs are good, except for "You Can Call Me Al" . . . I know it's a classic but I don't really like it. Besides that, I adore this CD. But it, I promise you it will have a permanent home in your CD player!

4 out of 5 stars Add This To Your Shopping Cart........2003-03-28

When you listen to this album, you'll soon realize Paul Simon loves drums and big band sound. I have no clue what his lyrics are saying, but they're great poetry. 4 selecions on this disc from the Monster hit 'Graceland' plus many more we've learned to tap our feet to. My personal favourites if I had to pick a couple are 'You Can Call Me Al' and 'Kodachrome', however the whole disc is well worth having. A major work and very very good quality.

5 out of 5 stars I was pleasantly surprised!.......2001-02-05

I have almost every album that Paul Simon has made, so I bought this one only because I was in the habit of adding to my collection. I wasn't expecting much--after all, I have all of these songs on other discs, some in triplicate. (Yes, I am a devoted fan). But, I was very pleasantly surprised with this collection. The sound is superb and the choice of songs is excellent. The songs span his career--the ones I especially like are 'Rene And Georgette Magritte With Their Dog After The War' and 'Bernadette'. 'Bernadette' is reminiscent of do-wop and also sounds like something from 'West Side Story'. Both songs are gems and it is sad that classic rock radio passed them by.

The book accompanying the CD is very nice, with glossy paper, photos of Paul not seen before, and liner notes which tell about each song. Song lyrics are also included, which is something that is not often done. Nice collection!

5 out of 5 stars You'll be flowing on a Cool, Cool, River while playing this.......2000-08-17

"...The Mississippi delta was shining like a national guitar..." the opening words to the opening track on this single CD Paul Simon best-of is the first of many things this CD does right! This package is named after the lyric in Graceland.

When one looks at the package, one sees tremendous care that went into it. The CD booklet boasts liner notes, photos, session details, and lyrics to all the songs! The CD clocks in at over 77 minutes and all the songs are remastered. The songs have never sounded better!

One may quibble with what's not on here (Gone At Last, Duncan, Something So Right). But with one CD covering an entire solo career since the S&G breakup, depth is sacrificed for breadth! One cannot quibble though, with what IS on here!

Some songs are edited, though. Loves Me Like A Rock is the edit appearing on Negotiations and Love Songs, and 50 Ways is the single edit appearing on his box set, and the UK import Anthology.

Oh... and some reviewers may speculate with why another greatest hits is coming out now, with Paul's new album on the way...but doing a retrospective covering songs from 1972's Paul Simon upto 1997's Capeman is timely. 25 years is a nice round number.

This is the best single CD covering Paul's career. One hopes a similar package appears domestically.

5 out of 5 stars Job Well Done!!!.......2007-01-24

Another great album by the legend J Dilla AKA Pay Jay AKA Dilla Dawg AKA Jay Dee. "Wont Do" is the best song in this album, if you havent seen the video it stars Dilla's little brother Illa J rapping Dilla's rhymes. Not too far long is E=MC2 with Common. I have read most of the reviews here and to me it doesnt matter that is a short album. Anytime you can listen to some real hip hop not some pop rap or any garbage that's on the radio right now, I rather pay the money for this over Nelly or T.I. or anybody else everytime. RIP Dilla you will be missed but not forgotten.

5 out of 5 stars World's most romantic album.......2007-07-11

I received this album on my 16th birthday from my best friend- who is still my best friend. I thought Jimmy Webb's music was heart-breakingly beautiful and I knew immediately I wanted to be a songwriter. There are classics on this album such as "Didn't We" and "The Name of My Sorrow" and "A Tramp Shining." To this day, this album is the one I play when my heart is breaking. No one could describe it better than Jimmy...or sing it with such soulfulness as Richard Harris (who is missed terribly.) As he did with the beautiful Lerner & Lowe music of Camelot, Richard's unique voice and style on this album has an angelic, haunting quality to it. To correct a previous reviewer, this album did not come before rock and roll, but right in the middle of the Hendrix, Joplin, Doors, era. That's what makes it all the more astonishing that an album of love ballards with lush orchestrations would be one of the hippest and most successful albums of 1968.

5 out of 5 stars A Song Cycle.......2007-03-21

This remarkable album is essentially a cycle of songs about the grief that comes when a love affair of real import ends. We've all had our hearts broken. The kind of deep sense of loss that can accompany the end of a relationship is akin to the grief we have when a loved one passes. These songs, by the brilliant and inimitable Jimmy Webb, discuss the process of loss in some detail. Like all metaphoric language, some of this stuff drives some people crazy. So, if it doesn't work for you, and you already know if it it does because "MacArthur Park" is so well known that pretty much everyone has an opinion about it, then this CD will sail right over your head. If, however, you can feel the emotional depth of the imagery, then you will go on a journey that is so sad it is pretty much tragic. I over-indulged in this record when I broke up with a certain someone a long time ago, and for years I could hardly hear these songs without being really brought down. Harris does a great job of reading these pieces; it is clear he understands the emotional landscape being traversed. This is a remarkable piece of work by these two men.

3 out of 5 stars Harris Sounds Great ... but ..........2006-06-26

I bought this for MacArthur Park which I happen to like (some people don't). As I recall that song was one of the first to run that long (around 7 1/2 minutes) and still be played on the radio. The other songs are enjoyable enough and Harris has a great deep voice. So what's not to like? First of all, few of the songs are that interesting; it's a bit boring. Secondly the whole album plays for only about 32 minutes with only 9 songs. Albums used to have a dozen songs; then many of them cut to a standard 10; this only gives you 9. If they were 9 wonderful songs, I wouldn't complain, but other than showcasing a really good singer, there is just nothing that interesting here. Sound quality is good. 4 stars for Harris himself and the quality; 3 for a very short album with nothing much that interesting on it.

3 out of 5 stars Most hated song of all time?.......2005-11-02

Jimmy Webb wrote some great stuff, but "Macarthur Park" is one of the most hated songs of all time.

In 1992, humorist Dave Barry wrote a newspaper column about bad songs. This was easily his most popular column, drawing thousands of letters from people who wanted to share their hatred of one song or another. This inspired Barry to do an informal poll about bad songs produced from 1960 to 1990 in which tens of thousands of people participated, the results of which were published in a small book, "Dave Barry's Book of Bad Songs." The verdict: "Macarthur Park" was easily the most unpopular song of that period, with "Yummy Yummy Yummy" by the 1910 Fruitgum Company a distant second. Most people who hate the song seem to be deeply offended by the cake metaphor in the refrain. And frankly, I agree this is one of the worst metaphors I've ever seen in a song or poem.

That said, Jimmy Webb did write some great stuff, and Richard Harris had a golden voice. There's some very listenable music here, if you don't mind Dave Barry and his fans giving you the raspberry.

4 out of 5 stars A Real Tour de Force.......2005-11-02

Of course, the much-maligned "MacArthur Park" is my favorite song. This alone makes me the target of ridicule in my family. Still, one cannot ignore the incredible musical arrangements on the album, and the heartfelt emotions of the late, great actor's performances. So he can't sing like Pavarotti! Those who enjoy this should also check out "Has Been" by Bill Shatner. The only real klinker on "A Tramp Shining" is "Dancing Girl;" all the others are lovely.

Had been shopping at a mall in Sacramento and had aching feet and backache. Played this CD and backache disappeared. I called my friend into the store who had been resting because of aching foot and told her to listen to it. I didn't tell her what it had done for me. Her pain went away also That was in Fall of '97 and I still listen to it for relief of body tension and to relax.

5 out of 5 stars This soothing music has a wonderful balancing effect........1999-01-13

The music washes over and through me, balancing and soothing any rough edges. The Morning CD is particularly wonderful for coping with the Los Angeles freeways. The Evening CD, with its deeper tones, completes the day and sends me to sleep relaxed and full.

5 out of 5 stars beyond conscious understanding & a "star-based" rating!.......1999-11-04

tibetan chordal/microtonal singing is an incredibly cosmic event one has to experience because it goes beyond mere description and ratings. the musical tones generated from deep within these maestros is mystical and quite healing on a cellular level, which is just one of the reasons creative and healing persons have been utilizing tibetan sounds for some time now. the sounds on this disc go directly to one's energy centers and penetrate the molecular core of one's etheric vehicle. there have been reports of astral travel using these sound meditations and the "vocals" intoned here are as powerful and transcendent as any i've heard in my large collection of tibetan music. highly recommended for healing, transcendence, acceptance and a deep experience of inner joy and peace.

***EPIC / MELODIC / SPEED / POWER METAL ALBUM WITH SYMPHONIC AND PROGRESSIVE ELEMENTS, ALL SUPPORTING A FANTASTIC EPIC TALE****

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars To theatrical.......2007-05-02

Not what i was expecting. Melancholy Beast is one of the best metal albums i've ever heard from beginninng to end. Usually the the sophomore effort rarely lives up to the first, but this doesn't even come close to Melancholy Beast. The keyboards/percussions overpower the music. There are no great riffs and the music lacks attitude and crunch. I just didn't like the direction this album went too. i tried to give it a chance, needless to say its gone to my cd boneyard.

3 out of 5 stars Some great music, with some cheese to make you cringe........2007-03-19

The songs have an epic feel to them. The vocalist fits the music perfectly with clear, melodic singing and belts out the vocals without holding back. The songs (especially the choruses) are catchy and slide more towards the keyboard and drums over guitars spectrum at times. I would classify this effort as a 3-4 on the 'heaviness' spectrum (out of 10). Except for a couple of problems I probably would have rated this a 4.5 (and given it a 4 on Amazon). The problems drag it down to a 3.5 for me (and thus will earn it a 3 here).

So what are these problems? They basically all have to do with the 'storytelling' aspects. To be succinct, I've had to delete more songs from this CD from my office play list than I have from any other CD, due to the 'cheese factor'. These storytelling aspects come in two flavors:

1. Narration - At least three 'songs' feature heavy narration. The first track is all narration, and two of the other songs feature it promininently. I didn't buy the CD to hear someone talk. While I can understand it in the first track, the other two times feel jarring and I much would have preferred the exposition to have been part of the song with Lance King's vocals rather than just spoken. Plus, the narration sounds like it's geared towards 'young adults'. Nothing wrong with that, but if it had been a book, I wouldn't have kept reading it.

2. 'The Child' - Track 3, "What lies beyond", is one of my favorite tracks on the CD, right up until the child starts talking. I'm unsure why they felt the need to put an actual child just talking in at this part, especially since Lance King had been singing both the role of the child and his protectors (making the song a bit confusing to follow at times) up until then. The real problem is, this presumed protector and savior of the world sounds like he's about to start bawling because he discovers that he's different than everyone else. I'm sure the boy is a wonderful kid, and did what he was asked to do, but if those words had to be spoken instead of sung (and I don't think they had to be), then the tone should have been more melancholy/introspective and less weepy. The problem of course, is that only the rare child can pull off the subtlety of melancholy as opposed to the directness of 'weepy'.

That's 4 of the 10 songs that I cringe at when I hear the elements mentioned above, especially when I have company. Heck, even friends who like Metal agree that the elements I've mentioned above just don't do it for them.

Let's be succinct here. I think they got too experimental here, or felt they were unable to tell the 'whole story' without the expositions mentioned above. If I want to 'hear' a fully realized story, I'll buy a book-CD. When I buy a Metal CD, I don't mind at all if it's a concept CD, but I want to hear good music. The story is secondary. If elements are not able to be explained and the group wants to be sure the readers get the whole story, they can add a page or two in the CD Liner or put up the information on the web site.

Because I found the music itself to be very good indeed, I'll be picking up "Melancholy Beast" sometime soon, but I found myself disappointed by this offering's discordant bits.

4 out of 5 stars Actual Rating - 4.5 stars. ( They really need to consider a 1/2 star rating system! ).......2007-02-04

The second release by this Danish / American power metal band shows the band improving in both the song writing and the song structuring process. Fantastic guitar work woven in with keyboards ( w/ the guitars at the forefront ), a very capable rythm section, and yet another outstanding vocal performance from Lance King make this album a winner. The pieces of this band are really starting to come together on this album and it shows. Fans of melodic power metal, purchase immediately!

4 out of 5 stars "HATE AGAINST EVIL AND ALL WHO SERVE IT".......2007-01-15

4.5 stars. My only complaint during this album is with the spoken-word sections awash with overblown atmospheric keyboards, "Era of Chaos" and "Blood Red Skies" which come off as a little cheesy upon first listen, but are later fogivable as they help tie the concept of the album together. Besides that, the music is intelligently crafted and the band shows some extremely talented interplay on every actual song. On the back of the CD layout reads an accurate summation: "****EPIC, MELODIC, POWER METAL WITH SYMPHONIC AND PROGRESSIVE TOUCHES, ALL SUPPORTING A FANTASTIC EPIC TALE****" Except they forgot to mention an excellent lead singer with upper register vocals and that the Progressive touches are what make the CD easy to return to often as it never gets boring. The ambitious songwriting demands that I give the album an extra half-star on the rating, as well. What sold me on my own purchase, however, was that I read another review here that mentioned Pyramaze being somewhat similar to another band called Lanfear, which I am completely enamored with at this time. Lanfear is another Progressive Power Metal incarnation worth checking out. I know Pyramaze has created a special album with "Legend of the Bone Carver" because my appreciation seems to be growing upon repeat spins of the CD. That is a definite sign that they have created something special. Thank you.

4 out of 5 stars damn good power metal.......2006-08-18

If you like power metal mixed with the D&D lyrical world then Pyramaze is a band you really need to listen to. If you like really good guitar and a vocalist with an amazing voice then you need to listen to either this CD or their first, Meloncholy Beast (which I think is even better, and certainly doesn't have as much of the silly lyrics). When I first picked up the Meloncholy Beast I was hesistant because I didn't want to be hearing Helloween or some lightweight Euro-metal (Hey, sorry, it's just not my cup of tea), so I was really pleased at the crunch and melody of the music. Legends of the Bone Carver continues the same sonic territory - nothing new, but that's just fine with me. Buy it, you'll really enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars A golden nugget shining brightly !!!.......2006-11-01

Sammy Davis, Jr. and Count Basie make a formidable team: they work well together on this album to produce a great performance. Quincy Jones wrote the musical arrangements on this album and the quality of Quincy's work is abundantly clear. Terrific!

The CD starts with the track "My Shining Hour" as Sammy emotes the way only Sammy could. The jazzy musical arrangement is beautiful. The next song is the romantic ballad "Teach Me Tonight" which is performed flawlessly. It also boasts another killer musical arrangement! SMILES Other classic ballads on this CD include a jazzy rendition of "April In Paris" and the incredibly romantic "You're Nobody 'Till Somebody Loves You." There is the sizzling hot "She's A Woman (W-O-M-A-N);" "The Girl From Ipanema;" and the playful yet very romantic song "Keepin' Out Of Mischief Now."

But there's more. "Work Song" is completely new to me; it is a song about a man who is serving time for a crime he committed. The musical arrangement is beautiful; and the story touches me as well. "Why Try To Change Me Now" is a soulful, slower paced ballad. "New York City Blues" pays tribute to New York City; Sammy sings beautifully and the Count Basie touch enhances the beauty of the song all the more.

The last track offers us something unusual and very pleasant. Sammy asks Basie to play "a little of that buck dance music." Sammy proceeds to tap dance his way through "Bill Basie Won't You Please Come Home" in honor of his father and uncle. Awesome! It works very well. At the end of this number Basie says "It Can't Get No Better Than That." Basie was never more truthful!

The liner notes offer a wonderful essay about Sammy Davis, Jr. written by Quincy Jones shortly after Davis passed away in 1990.

Overall, this CD demonstrates how quality classic jazz should sound. Sammy Davis Jr., Count Basie and Quincy Jones labored long and hard to make this album a reality; and all of us are better off because they shared their talents with us.

4 out of 5 stars sammy and the count.......2006-07-15

Davis is probably one of the most talented singers in American popular music, quite often showing significant influence of jazz, just like his pal Sinatra (although I like Sinatra more, Davis is obviously a far better singer).
However this teaming up with Basie's band didn't amount to as much excitement and pleasure: Basie's band is being used as an ordinary back-up orchestra...
This is still great popular music with strong jazz overtones, a real bonanza for Davis fans, but this allbum could have been much better... Frankly, I believe the arranger Quincy Jones is the one most responsible for this sort of concept, with Basie (and, presumably, his band) being quite happy to earn some money without much effort.

5 out of 5 stars this deserves *****starrs.......2006-04-25

allright here you have three of the absolute best in their field!
SAMMY DAVIS JR-the best vocalist from that area!
COUNT BASIE-need i explain...
QUINCY JONES-the hottest arranger around!

So this album really holds up to it's promise, sammy is great as allways, count swings as allways and it's beautifully arranged by quincy.

i've written enough this is pure JOY!!

4 out of 5 stars Not the version I was expecting.......2006-04-07

I have this CD on vinyl and have always loved it. When I got this CD, that's what I was expecting it to be. Evidently, he went in a studio and redid his original vocals at some later date and I think he was in better voice. I believe the album came out on MGM records in the 70's. I'll stick to the vinyl version, it's superior.

5 out of 5 stars sammy and the count, wow!.......2004-10-09

do you really need to know more than the title of this album to want to own it? it lives up to the billing, if you love Sammy, love Count Basie, then buy it!

3 out of 5 stars okay.......2007-01-05

I heard wonderful things about this recording... but was a little disappointed. It is good, but nothing spectacular.

4 out of 5 stars A promise about to be fulfilled.......2006-12-17

Not all of EMI's Debut seeries make it to the U.S., but since this one features an American singer, it did (as did the one featuring rising pianist Jonathan Biss). Nathan gunn is certainly well kn0wn now, after high-profile Met appearances in The Magic Flute and Harbison's An American Tragedy. The past few years have seen him mature, even though his voice will never be heroic. Gunn is very well suited to songs, although he makes a moving (and physically handsome) Billy Budd.

Her he sounds a little stiff, and he cannot carry off the numbers that re comic (Bolcom's Fur) or popular (Buddy, Can You Spare a Dime?), but his straightforward masculinity works extremely well in Gene Scheer's Holding Each Other, he has enough poetry for Barber's Sure on This Shining Night, and just enough savoir faire for Rorem's Early One Morning. The voice itself isn't intrinsically beautiful, which may in the end mean that Gunn falls behind young counterparts like Gerald Finley and Simon Keenlyside, both of whom he resembles. Even so, this is a nice debut, and one can say that gunn's promise is being fulfilled.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing collection - amazing voice........2006-02-22

Nathan Gunn has chosen a collection of mostly obscure songs and has applied his remarkable baritone voice to music not usually in the operatic repetoire. What results is a CD of depth, some humor, and extraordinary listenability. It's nice to see one of my favorite opera stars branch out. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing recordings.......2006-01-02

I first listened to this recording at the recommendation of a voice teacher and I am eternally grateful. I strongly recommend this album. Nathan Gunn is an extremely talented singer. As a singer myself (also a baritone like Nathan Gunn) I find much in his voice to model.

Nathan Gunn has an extremely beautiful voice, superb technique and execution, and has a very natural sound. There is an old steriotype of opera as sounding forced or artificial, but Nathan Gunn does a great job of avoiding this. He does a great job of communicating the "story" of the song to the listener, and I frequently found myself taken to the world of the song. Listening to many of his songs are like opening a good book and Nathan Gunn takes you there.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars First Rate Singing!.......2005-12-20

I only recently discovered Mr. Gunn, but after hearing this recording, it makes me wonder why his name has eluded me for so long. Simply put, Nathan Gunn sings like a god! His voice is pure, and hypnotically beautiful to listen to. Turn on this CD and you will be wrapped in the most luxurious blanket of sound--his phrasing is impeccable, and his dynamics are wonderfully varied without being affected. His recording of Barber's "Nocturne" is haunting. "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime" shows he isn't afraid of low notes, and the ending has some of the most spectacular high notes I've ever heard from a baritone. The Copland songs are also well done, as are the two John Jacob Niles selections. I wasn't familiar with Gene Scheer's songs prior to this CD, but they are all quite remarkable, though most especially "Lean Away" and "American Anthem." This is the best addition to my CD collection in a long time. I'm only saddened by the fact he doesn't have more recordings available. Mr. Gunn, I know you're busy with your opera schedule, but for those of us who can't make it to New York to see you in person, please record another CD!

This is the third official CD set to chronicle the Garcia Band's early '90s period and as such it fills in the gaps not covered by Jerry Garcia Band and How Sweet It Is. Focused more, it seems, on choosing songs not found on those previous two releases, it does not find Garcia in peak form all the way through. Still, there are many highlights across these 15 cover songs, such as the jaunty "Russian Lullaby" and the super soulful "Ain't No Bread in the Breadbox." Interestingly enough, 6 of the 10 songs Garcia first included on 1974's studio album Compliments appear here, in addition to late-period additions to the repertoire like the aforementioned "Breadbox," the Manhattans' 1980s soul hit "Shining Star," and Daniel Lanois's "The Maker." Garcia's voice may not have held up over the years, but you can't argue with the emotion he invests in these performances. Not an essential entry all in all, but a valuable complement to the other sets of similar vintage. --Marc Greilsamer

3 out of 5 stars Just not that good.......2006-02-23

Sorry but I just can't get into it even though I'm a big Jerry fan. I ordered it back when it was first released and listened to it a few times before putting it away. A year or so later I tried to get into it again - no luck. Most of the time I end up giving anything associated with Garcia 5 stars. Not this time. This is full of lack luster performances that never get off the ground. I really cannot even believe I'm giving it 3 stars. I just spot it 3 stars because you get to hear Jerry's guitar. And the cover art is almost insulting. It looks like some bad imitation of 60's art. I cannot believe Jerry would have been proud of this disaster. Buy something else from him.

5 out of 5 stars Shining Star, Hidden Gem.......2005-09-25

Shining Star is a hidden gem. I recommend it to anyone who wants to see the real Jerry in action wih his band. The guitarists and background singers make the show a soulful jam session. This CD rocks!

2 out of 5 stars I agree that this is pickin' over the leftovers..........2003-10-18

With all the JGB shows in circulation, THIS is the best they could come up with? It's a lame compilation with some great moments, but a lot of filler. Someone else mentioned that this is a case of people pickin' over Jerry's leftovers and, compared to something like "Don't Let Go," which was phenomenal, I have to agree. Don't waste your money on this...

4 out of 5 stars Pls. buy this wonderful cd!.......2003-08-16

I've followed the Dead and Jerry since '68. I'm writing this review because I see that others have, well, trashed this cd. NO! This is Jerry again celestial. As the banner over the Avalon read in '68: They're not the best at what they do; nobody does what they do!. Still true and still true of the Jerry Garcia Band. BUY this cd. Wait till you hear how Jerry and the band take the Stones' Lets Spend the Night Together and make it into a so-sweet love ballad! Price of admission is worth it right there!

5 out of 5 stars burning in the eyes of the Maker.......2003-03-21

I like this CD, but `The Maker' is beyond phenomenal. It's one of the best recordings I've heard of Jerry. I'd equate with Visions of Johanna on Phil Zone, Morning Dew on Europe '72, or some of the songs in the live Warfield Garcia-Grissman '91 - '92 shows. For `The Maker' alone, it's an absolute must have. But overall I like the whole thing.

5 out of 5 stars "Dr. Strangelove, The Shining & Spartacus ~ Kubrick".......2005-03-11

One can only thank Silva Screen for releasing a Tribute album "2001: Music from the Films of Stanley Kubrick", featuring just a handful of films and scores from writer/director Stanley Kubrick......but what an impact they have made on audiences everywhere over the years...his shoes are not easy to fill in the world of film making.

Did I mention Peter Sellers manifesting his talent enough for three roles, which included a U.S. President in "DR. STRANGELOVE, OR HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING ABOUT AND LOVE THE BOMB"(1964), besides Sellers we have Sterling Hayden(crazed General) and George C. Scott(gum chewing insanity), but Slim Pickens steals the show with his wild ride on the "bomb"..."THE KILLING" (1956), "PATHS OF GLORY" (1957) and "SPARTACUS" (1960), an original true story of a gladitor(Kirk Douglas) who leads other slaves into rebellion against a powerful Rome in 73 B.C...actor and executive producer Douglas was magnificent in the film, with brilliant Kubrick directing...outstanding score by Alex North..."LOLITA" (1962), "2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY" (1968), "A CLOCKWORK ORANGE" (1971), master film maker Kubrick pulled out all the stops on this one, Malcolm McDowell(sadistic punk is funny fierce psychopath) a cult following with memorable scenes..."BARRY LYNDON" (1975), adventures of an Irish gambler whose transition from innocence into the pit of aristocracy in the 18th Century...Ryan O'Neal stars, never better in a role..."THE SHINING" (1980), we know Jack Nicholson can go off the deep end, but in this film(he's completely off the charts), can think of no other actor that can pull this off..."FULL METAL JACKET" (1987)...quite a line up from one of the industries leaders in film making, and the scores that pulled them off.

Hats off to The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Paul Bateman, Nic Raine and Mark Ayres...Crouch End Festival Chorus, conducted by Bateman...James Fitzpatrick (producer), Reynold da Silva (executive producer)...and the many soloist Tomas Lerst on fiddle, Vaclay Skyora on tin whistle, Zbynka Solcova on celtic harp, Gareth Williams on harpsichord and Jaraslava Eliasova on piano...and a big thank you to Silva Screen for keeping all of us "film-score-buffs" in a happy mood...gotta love it!
