There are dozens of House Compilations, but there is only one Testament Of House. Not for nothing this CD resembles the Book of Books - the Bible. Accordingly this latest Ministry Of Sound compilation is planned as the ultimate standard for House music. This means: On 2 CDs you get a unique blend of the coolest, most innovative club pearls in addition to the hottest club mixes of such big names like Jamiroquai, Simply Red and Bootsy Collins.

This selection was compiled by well known Hamburg producers, remixers & DJs Knee Deep, who delivered a worldwide smash hit with their club mix for the Afro Medusa track "Pasilda". In addition they won the German Dance Award as best remixers of the year in 2001. The list of their remix-clients looks like the who's who of the international music scene: David Morales, Brandy, Bob Sinclair, Bob Marley, Bootsy Collins and Everything But The Girl, just to name a few, they all have asked Knee Deep to turn their songs into chart hits or to add the typical Knee Deep club touch to their compositions. Their last strike was the remix for Jamiroquai, whose track "Main Vein" they turned into a #1 on the UK Charts.

    I didn't look close enough at the track list before buying this. I was very excited to see a soundtrack of the BBC versions of The Chronicles of Narnia, since I love the music in them (not to mention the movies in general). Unfortunately, the Narnia music is only the first 7 tracks.

    The whole CD has great music, and I think I would have enjoyed it more if I hadn't been expecting the whole thing to be Narnia. A lot of the other music on it reminds me of Sherlock Holmes music. It is a great CD, and I definitely recommend it...but don't expect a full CD of Narnia music.

    I never get tired of hearing this narnia music over and over again. Mr. Burgon really captures the heart and soul of Narnia through his music. In opinion, it easily surpasses the new film music at times (both Tumnus themes are very good).

    I did not care for all the choral (enya-like) music from the new film, and this music has none of that.

            Testament has become one of my favorite classical labels, despite the fact that its CDs sell at full-price. This company prides itself on licensing classic recordings from the vaults of labels like EMI and Decca, performances that the big boys won't reissue not because of their musical quality, but because of their lack of profitability. Recently, though they have also started issuing CDs that were once available on EMI but that have been deleted sometime within in the last ten years. From an idealistic viewpoint, I'm delighted that they are doing this -- I'd like to see everything in print -- but from a financial perspective I just don't get it. I imagine that Testament will have a tough time selling these CD reissues because the serious classical collectors, whom I assume make up the majority of their constituency, undoubtedly bought these titles in their initial offering on disc.

            Take this CD's performances of Smetana's "Bartered Bride" Suite and Humperdinck's "Hansel & Gretel" Suite (arranged by the conductor) for example. These brilliant golden-age stereo performances from the early 1960s by Rudolf Kempe and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra have been available on CD before as a substantial part of Kempe's two-disc Artist Profile Set on EMI, which was available for roughly the same cost as this title! (In fairness the Dvorak "Scherzo Capriccioso" does not appear on that set.) Undoubtedly, used (or new) copies of that collection are still floating around in the Amazon Marketplace despite the fact that it is out of print. In all, Testament is great label and I'd like them to continue making rare recordings available. Yet if they keep reprinting deleted CDs, instead of rescuing obscure gems from the vaults to make available on CD for the first time, then I'm not sure how much longer they will be around for our listening enjoyment.

            Album Description

            46 original recordings licensed from the Acid Jazz, Sony Music Entertainment & A Man Called Adam labels in the '80s &'90s. Nearly four hours long, it was compiled by Acid Jazz employee Dean Rudland & features top tracks of the genre, including Jamiroquai ('When You Gonna Learn?'), Corduroy ('E-Type'), Brand New Heavies ('Dream Come True') & Goldbug ('Whole Lotta Love'). Each CD comes in a separate standard jewel case & together they are housed in a full color slipcase. 1998 Westside release. The full title is 'Acid Jazz Story Old Testament 1988-1996'.

            The most notable music movement of the late 80's and 90's, the AJ Old Testament it is. From Galiano and BNH to Corduroy and JTQ, this has got all the 'hits' from 88 to 96. Yea, sure, you've heard half of this stuff, maybe more, but when was the last time you heard any of it? Living in the states and not being a self-made millionare, I wasn't able to buy EVERY disc put out by this illustrious label, so this rounds out my collection. A must-buy if you know what acid jazz is.

            We are indeed lucky to have lived through the times of Charles Mackerras. The man is a phenomenon. He was well before his time in the development of the authentic music movement with his still startling Fireworks Music with a full complement of woodwind (just about every oboist in London, recorded in the early hours of the morning) and with the use of elaborate authentic ornamentation in Handel and Mozart. He demonstrates a witty lighter side as an arranger of Gilbert and Sullivan. As Head of English National Opera there were memorable performances of Verdi and Wagner as well as rarities like Szymanowski, Smetana and Martinu. But, above all, it is probably as the man who brought the operas of Janacek to a British and then to a World audience that he will be most gratefully remembered.

            This reissue is of an early Mackerras recording of Janacek, his first of the Sinfonietta, and made before a lot of the editorial cleaning-up for which Sir Charles was in large part responsible. Nevertheless, these are marvellous Janacek performances. There is a special freshness and a conviction about the playing of the Pro Arte Orchestra (a largely ad hoc ensemble with some fine soloists, especially among the woodwind). The acoustic is quite dry and the recording quite lean, which suits this music admirably. There is, for example, a crispness to the timps and a brightness to the brass in the opening and closing fanfares of the Sinfonietta that is more apt in this music than the more usual lushness we get from other conductors. Even Mackerras' later versions of the Sinfonietta with the Vienna and Czech Phils seem a little over-upholstered by comparison.

            The opera preludes, too, revel in a sense of discovery and revelation. Whether it's the imperial fanfares of Makropoulos, more tight crisp timpani with the insistent Fate motif in Katya Kabanova or the hair-raisingly wild violin cadenzas in House of the Dead, both tempi and sound are perfectly judged in these performances. And Jealousy, the original prelude to Jenufa, is a fine work in its own right - even if Janacek's second thoughts work better in the context of the opera.

            The fill-ups on this disc, not on the original LP, are more evidence of Mackerras' indefatigable versatility. The Enescu, especially, has great energy, flexibility and shape - but the Brahms, Dvorak and Bartok also show off Sir Charles as the master of the tempo juste, even in familiar music.

            In short, the slightly dated sound suits Janacek's music well and Sir Charles' performances match anything he did later (and more than match anyone else). Most of all, there is a special sense of discovery about the composer here that carries well down the years.

            This Cd is outstanding. It was compiled by knee deep, the guys who make a living remixing for people like Jamiroqui, so you know they know their music. It's some of the best deep house I have heard in a while. House heavywieghts like Ron Carroll and Dutribe sound system will keep you dancing all night long. Way to go Knee Deep.
