A Beautiful Re-Creation of Over-Exposed Legrand Material.......2006-02-10
Michel Legrand is one the biggest artists of music entertainment, a sensitive composer and arranger.
Here you'll find a correct selection of Legrand's material with unnecessarily new arrangements though with an impeccable performance.
Many of the songs in the repertoire are still available in CDs you can find here @Amazon and the best Legrand is the original Legrand.
This album stands only for those who doesn't care about original takes and wishes just for a selection of the best Legrand.
"one of the greatest film composers of the 20th Century ~ Michel Legrand".......2005-10-26
Silva Screen has released a collection that will set you on your ear "The Essential Michel Legrand Film Music Collection"...Legrand's score sets the tone and mood you experience a sense of power and freedom, so exhilarating...Legrand's genius in composition and orchestration, puts the listener smack dab in the middle of each film he scores as it serves up a generous helping of heaven for all "film-score-buff" collectors
Michel Legrand was born in Paris on February 24th, 1932...attended the Paris Conservatory Progressing...worked in various jazz bands, later a staff arranger and composer...an orchestrator in the '50s...scored films in the early '60s with "THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG" (1964)..."THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR" (1968)..."THE GO-BETWEEN" (1970)..."SUMMER OF '42" (1971)..."THE THREE MUSKETEERS" (1973)...and three Oscars from the Academy Awards for "THE WINDMILLS OF YOUR MIND" for best music and original song in 1969 , "SUMMER OF '42" for best original song and original dramatic score in 1972... "YENTL for best music and original song score in 1984...then in 2003 nominated for Broadway's Tony Awards for Best Original Music Score for the Musical "Amour", there's no letting up for this hard working composer.
The Flemish Radio Orchestra featuring conductor composer Michel Legrand on piano and harpsichord, Philippe Chayeb on bass, Thierry Chauvet on drums and Bruno Caviglia on guitar...all in all did a magnificent job in bringing the music of a composer who wrote for a multitude of films, receiving recognition from the industry and fans which is long over-due ~ his work is in constant demand.
This collection contains an overlay of each cue in Legrand's distinctive style of legendary scoring ~ the man who made this possible, a tremendous asset to every project he undertakes is Reynold da Silva [executive producer of the album] ~ symphonic suites with full orchestra fullfilling the "film-score-buffs" cravings for more of the same, just the way we like 'em!

If the American pop culture profile of French composer-jazz pianist Michel Legrand doesn't seem what it once was, don't be misled: his European indie film scores continue six decades on, now numbering nearly 200. But Legrand's most beloved work remains the lovely, evocative themes he created in the '60s and '70s, including "I Will Wait for You" from The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, The Thomas Crown Affair's "Windmills of Your Mind," the theme from Summer of '42, and his work on Barbra Streisand's Yentl. This collection marks Legrand's first solo piano recordings, presenting those and other film score highlights in spontaneously improvised performances that offer a glimpse of Legrand's musical soul. If, as in "Windmills," his enthusiasm gets the best of him and he occasionally lapses into flights of melodramatic pianistic self-parody, there are more than enough sublime moments here to compensate, especially on lesser-known songs like Best Friends' "How Do You Keep the Music Playing?," "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?" from The Happy Ending, and Brian's Song's "Hands of Time." --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Michel Legrand.......2007-03-12
This is a great CD! Sound is awesome. I highly recommend it.
Sunlight on his fingertips.......2005-08-10
Sunlight on his fingertips
The very bright talent of Michele Legrand you can feel especially when Maestro is playing piano himself.
I heard some orchestra performance of Legrand before, that was good, but I was still thinking about him just like about pop music composer.
Now I think different - he is Genius!
all the stars you've got.......2005-01-29
Bill Evans once said that technique in jazz "is the ability to translate your ideas into sound through your instrument." If that's the case, Legrand possesses technique in spades.
Before commenting on this rewarding disc, a few words about Legrand himself:
Is there a better songwriter or a more versatile all-around musican alive today? I think you have to go back to people like Gershwin and Billy Strayhorn to find a rough parallel to Legrand's multifaceted, genre-crossing genius. A pupil of Nadia Boulanger (who studied with Faure and taught many important American composers, including Aaron Copland and Philip Glass), Legrand is an heir of the great French tradition of music--but one who has chosen to express himself through popular songs, film scores, and jazz. He possesses that rare combination of an absolutely rigorous theoretical knowledge of music and an intuitive, spontaneous instinct for both melody and improvisation. He combines exquisite refinement with a popular touch, a need to communicate directly with all who love music. To me, his work represents the most perfect expression of such typically French traits as lightness, insouciance, wit, melodic charm, and direct emotional expression since Poulenc.
Here you'll find many of Legrand's signature songs--"I Will Wait for You," "The Windmills of Your Mind," "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?," "The Hands of Time," "You Must Believe in Spring," etc.--reharmonized and enriched in stunningly beautiful solo recreations. Those unfamiliar with Legrand's pianistic abilities will probably be surprised by what they hear, for he's no part-time piano tickler. He can easily hold his own in the company of the best modern jazz pianists. He has a wonderfully refined touch that is incapable of making a harsh sound and a profusive sense of fantasy that keeps you constantly guessing as to where the music will go next. Yet you always feel satisfied when you find out, because Legrand possesses a composer's comprehension of harmony and form. And his own style is in no way compromised by an occasional nod here and there toward Bill Evans, Erroll Garner, Rachmaninoff, and so on. (Please: disregard the Amazon reviewer's remark about "flights of melodramatic pianistic self-parody." It's called a stride chorus, and it's just one example of Legrand's surprising way of recasting these songs--and of his encyclopedic command of jazz styles.)
This disc represents the essence of Legrand. It really should have been recorded a long time ago, but the fact that it has captured his undiminished abilities as he enters his twilight years lends it an added poignance--a sense of "just in time!"--that makes it all the sweeter. If you're already a Legrand fan, it should be a self-recommending treasure, and if you're a fan of great piano playing or of sophisticated jazz treatments of great songs, odds are you'll find this a very rewarding disc indeed. For me, the highlight is this version of "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?" in which every note seems inevitable--not at all an easy thing to make happen in an improvisation.
Miles Davis once said of a Duke Ellington recording, "Give that one all the stars you've got." That's the way I feel about this disc, and I thought that phrase "all the stars you've got" was appropriate because it almost sounds like the title of a Legrand song.
Maestro Legrand , at last !.......2004-10-10
Legrand has recorded at last one of his more intimate renditions to himself with his most remarkable themes along his brilliant career .
From a summer of 42 , The windmills of your mind (The Thomas crown afair) , what are you doing the rest of your life or the romantic Umbrellas of Cherbourg ; all those unforgettable themes are played in this album for piano solo in the real intimacy between him and the listener .
Legrand is the golden master of soundtracks in France and one of the top in the world . He owns that inner vision to catch the spirit of every movie he accompains . He composes music as he was a real director movie . The psychological concerns , the romantic efluvies and the precise and lyrical atmosphere , with that touch of class, artistic elegance and sublime eloquency .
Think also in the important recordings with Miles Davis . That issue will give you the size of that artist and anothe point to remark . In 1954 , Legrand made a golden jewel : I lvoe Paris (See my review) that has become through the years in the most famous and the best album of instrumental music ever recorded .
What other background do you need to acquire this gem ?
For Jazz piano purest... Only!.......2002-09-07
I love the music of Michele Legrand! It is a rich mixture of
graceful tones and notes, that create memories of a certain
time and place in each of our own lives.
When accompaned with great orchestration Its wonderful. When done in a jazz piano style, its not as good. Not to take anyting away from the talents of Mr Legrand as a pianist. Its just that like hearing a lusher, grander version of his music. So if you like jazz piano music, and Michele Legrand.
Then this is the cd for you!

While it is impossible to really squeeze The Very Best of Janet Baker onto just two CDs, this two and a half hour anthology is a fine portrait of the British mezzo-soprano. Central to CD 1 is Elgar's Sea Pictures, a definitive account with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir John Barbirolli. While other British music is represented by Vaughan Williams's "Linden Lea," Britten's "Corpus Christie Carol," and Warlock's "Pretty Ring Time," CD 2 balances the program with 10 Schubert songs accompanied at the piano by either Gerald Moore or Geoffrey Parsons, which range from "Ave Maria" to Shakespeare. The set lends equal weight to orchestral and more intimate song, as well as to works in English--a very moving reading of Handel's "He was despised" from Messiah--and European landmarks, including Mendelssohn's On Wings of Song and Brahms's Alto Rhapsody, the latter with a superlative London Philharmonic Orchestra under Sir Adrian Boult. In an age of technically dazzling but sometimes bland singers, this release is a reminder of emotionally intense musicianship that retains vocal clarity and commitment to the composer's intentions over superstar ego. The word great is often used all too easily, but it could not be more appropriate for this outstanding collection of a great singer. --Gary S. Dalkin
Customer Reviews:
The Very Best of Janet Baker is simply the very best!.......2005-02-09
This cd and this amazing musician are an absolute must have for any music lover or music snob alike! Her voice is amazing!
Grace Incarnate.......2002-09-02
If there is one singer who has ever truly been able to master the singer's art of interpretation, this is her. She is a gift to music, I truly believe this. A few words, or glowing adjectives could not accurately describe the singing of a woman who epitomizes art. And music. Grace and beauty.
Each track on this cd is a perfect union of poetry, melody and technicality. Dame Janet Baker fully immerses herself into each piece, and delivers highly commited, intelligent & emotional performances.
A Rare & Glorious Singer.......2002-06-10
This is a pretty good cross-section of Dame Janet's output from the prime of her career. There are few if any singers like her around today. There are many mezzos who can sing beautifully, with great articulation and finesse, but they lack the moral and musical integrity Dame Janet always brought to her singing. The voice is ardent, seeking, yearning, finding, exulting. Listen to the excerpt from "Dream of Gerontius" or the third of the "Sea Pictures" to see what I mean.
She does not sing to show off. She sings to enlighten, to illuminate, to reveal, to enter into. Her voice carries us off, near to Heaven.
Dame Janet has been neglected of late. This recording shows us why, in these perilous times, we need her more than ever.

The perspective of a new Fan.......2006-01-15
My wife mentioned she would like to see JJW, and having never really listened much before, I grabbed tickets to The Grand Opera House in Galveston for last weekend 1-7-06.
He played most of what you recognize from hearing on the radio.
The compilation of his Best of the Rest is a great batch of songs you can hear over and over again. You can just get lost in the music that makes this man the artist that he is. From the friends he's known like Charlie Dunn (look this up on http://www.famoustexans.com/charliedunn.htm)to the highs and lows of the life he sings about, this is a must have album.

Great collection of helloweens older works.......2007-01-04
This album was originally put out in 1991 prior to pink bubbles go ape on noise records, the old lable of hellowen to finish out their contract. It is by far one of the best greatest hits compilations available for any band, much like alice coopers greatest hits in 1974. This album has the harder to find tracks "livin ain't no crime", "Save Us" and re-recordings with michael kiske's vocals of "savage", possibly the definitive version. Kiske re-recorded many of these old "Walls of Jerhico" tracks on this, which can also be found on the Pumpkin Box, or the album 2006 re-masters. Kia Hansen was a good vocalist, but I am glad he stepped aside to focus on guitar, because he is one of the best thrash/power guitarist around. This is well worth adding to your collection, and likely a great introduction/solo disc if a person only wants to own one helloween disc.
''ITS HALLOWEEN......AHHHHHHHH!!!''.......2005-09-22
This is a perfect HELLOWEEN CD!!!
And just to give justice were justice is due..HALLOWEEN IS THE MOST INSAINE GOD DAMN SONG EVER MADE!!!
THERE MUST 15 TIME CHANGES IN THIS SONG!!!!!! ITS 13 MINUTES LONG AS WELL!!! YOU ''NEVER HEARD IT''??YOUR GAY!!!
This band just reeked of the 80's sound(which is GREAT!)
BUY IT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ITS HALLOWEEEEEEENNNN...YES AGAIN HAHA!
Single servings anyone?.......2005-08-02
The Best, The Rest, and The Rare was originally released in 1991 as a way for Helloween to fulfill their obligations to BMG and Noise, for the band and Noise were in a lengthy lawsuit that put Helloween on ice for 3 years. The Best...includes highlights from Helloween's early recordings and is a good way for a new listener to get a feel for the band's earlier work. For the seasoned Helloween fan, four hard-to-find tracks are included on The Best, hence The Rare. Included are the b-sides Livin' Ain't No Crime, Savage (Why this song didn't make it on the Keeper II album is beyond me), the Michael Kiske version of Victim of Fate, and Don't Run For Cover. These four songs are hard to find separately on the singles they originally appeared, but this is an economical, easy way to get these songs. Worth the money for these four tracks alone.
Andrew Mullenax's thoughts on Helloween.......2004-06-12
I think that this is a very good example of rock and instrumental. On the song "Kepper of the Seven Keys" there are some very good sounding and talented solos. I think that this is a great CD and you should consider buying along with Helloween; Keeper of the Seven Keys Pt.1.

Imagine if Eddie left Van Halen instead of Dave..........2007-06-26
What's the first thing David Lee Roth did after leaving Van Halen? He hooked up with Steve Vai (a guitarist whose musical chops ran so deep that the late Frank Zappa initially hired him to transcribe his unbelievably complex pieces) and the power rhythm section of Billy Sheehan (bass) and Matt Bisonette (drums). The album that followed, "Eat 'em And Smile," was as powerful as any Van Halen album.
What's that got to do with UFO? Well, Shenker's out and Paul Raymond's in. That means that David Lee Roth (Phil Mogg) carried on without Eddie (Michael).
Classic, "ultimate" UFO means Schenker, Mogg, Raymond, Parker and Way. Outside of that lineup we've heard good, bad, and ugly UFO. "The Best Of The Rest" is "good UFO"...which means it's 50% better than most of the bands whose peaks never matched "Lights Out" or "Strangers In The Night."
"Classic UFO" represented a volatile combination...just like "Original Van Halen"...but this album is worthy of being in your collection, along with "One Of Those Nights: The Collection" (live material from the Chapman years and a big chunk of the Lawrence Archer years).
Schenker wrote the BEST CHAPTER of the book on UFO, but he wasn't the ENTIRE BOOK.
A good title..........2000-11-17
This appropriately titled collection features a mix of UFO from the years after the mighty Michael Schenker left the band. Although at the time most people just bemoaned the fact that Schenker was gone, the post-Mike UFO actually rocked--his replacement, Paul Chapman, is a damn excellent guitarist and the albums they put out from 1980-1983 with Chapman ("No Place To Run", "The Wild, The Willing & The Innocent", "Mechanix" and "Making Contact", the weakest of the four) were all pretty much memorable records with great songs but some filler. As such, this would be an awesome mix of the better tracks from the Chapman years, were it not for one thing: the tracks from UFO's 1986 album "Misdemeanor", which is a horrendous, keyboard-laced waste of time. Nonetheless, for the cheap price this is a good buy as an introduction to the criminally ignored 1980-1983 UFO years.
True fans don't like best ofs because they are not the best........2000-09-23
True fans of any band usually do not care for best of albums. I like Jefferson Airplane's title "The Worst of Jefferson Airplane"!
Only 2 songs from The Wild The Willing and The Innocent?
If you do not own The Wild The Willing and The Innocent buy it now! Then again this CD has 17 songs and The Wild The Willing and The Innocent only has 8.
Lights Out will always be my favorite UFO album because it was my first. We all have our biases. I know that I'm biased.
I'll also be honest--I was in the "I wish Michael would return to UFO" camp when I first heard The Wild The Willing and The Innocent. Also, confessing to my biases many of the mid UFO era songs were to 80ish for me (I have still learned to love them). I really do not understand why these songs did not get radio play other than the fact that life is not fair. The best bands do not always sell the best. Perhaps, they sounded to 80ish for radio play for some stations, and to 70ish for other stations. Despite heavy criticism by some UFO fans mid UFO was/is better than the mass majority of the music that outsold it. Perhaps if they had renamed the band Unidentified White Flying Object they would have sold better.
Beware, if you are not a UFO fan, and buy this recording, you may become compelled to purchase more UFO! I bought this because all my UFO was on tape or Album And The Wild The Willing and The Innocent was not available on CD at the time. To true UFO fans you would have to have a 5 to 7 CD box set to have the best of UFO. Even with a 5 to 7 CD boxset some fine songs would have to be left off.
Blue oh tell me where are you? Misdemeanor side "B" track 2 or track 7 for those of you with the CD. Way to many good songs left off. But, I guess they only had room for 17.
UFO Best of the Rest.......2000-07-08
This album is the Best of UFO with other guitar players beside Michael Schenker ie: Paul Chapman. The Track called "Letting Go" was why I bought this record. It is a very interesting record as it showcases Phil Moog more. For the price you get a different look at UFO, it's "Something Else".........
