With each new Dan Zanes and Friends release, many fans worry that his homespun magic will eventually hit the right note with the masses. Zanes' music, as offbeat as it is organic, is so special to forward-thinking young families that plenty have batted around half-baked plans to attach a password to it. Anybody else can sell out, the thinking goes, but please, please not him. Catch That Train, then, is bound to meet with a lot of hand-wringing. For one thing, it's the first Zanes and Friends release since the crazy-haired, asparagus-stalk thin artist started appearing in videos on the Playhouse Disney channel. For another, Starbucks has stepped in to lend a promotional hand. Those are ominous indicators indeed, but if the largely on-track Catch That Train proves anything, it's that Zanes isn't lock-stepping it with the boardroom goons just yet. Once again, the high-profile collaborators (The Blind Boys of Alabama, Nick Cave, Natalie Merchant) could cause a childless hipster to heed the all-aboard call, but also as on previous discs, it's the usual suspects who supply some of the strongest tracks: Barbara Brousal on "Mariposa Ole," Father Goose on "Choo Choo Ch'Boogie," and the Rubi Theater Company on "Walkin' the Dog." True, "Let's Shake" seems suspiciously TV-ready; skip it and pretend it never happened. Then keep your fingers crossed that, once this train leaves the station, Zanes--plainspoken hero to so many--won't trade it in for a stretch limo. --Tammy La Gorce

Very good, but not our favorite.......2007-07-01
This is our sixth Dan Zanes album, and I guess one of them has to be our least favorite. I am sorry to say that Catch That Train! holds that dubious distinction in our household. I am not writing this review to slam the album, but merely to offer the opinion that if you are new to Dan Zanes, you may wish to consider one of his other albums first.
As other reviews have indicated, Dan Zanes is fun, loose and all about the sing-along. I suspect that's why he collaborates so often and so well. If you're looking for tight, sophisticated arrangements, look elsewhere. If you're looking for music that everyone can get into, music that is accessible to children without being cloying to adults, then start filling your cart. Bruce Springsteen gets a lot of credit for bringing the Seeger catalog and other folk treasures to younger audiences, but we think he got the idea from Dan! We love the folk/americana covers, Dan's originals and the songs that he pulls in from other cultural traditions. Here are the albums we own and how we'd rank them:
1. Sea Music
2. Parades and Panoramas
3. Rocket Ship Beach
4. Family Dance
5. House Party
6. Catch That Train
Kids music has changed for the best!.......2007-06-12
Dan Zanes has set a milestone for kids music, no more does parents have to be forced to listen to Barney or the Wiggles, (ugh!). With Dan Zanes, parents and kids can both enjoy the great sound and lyrics of classic fables set to a variety of musical beats. This is Dan's latest album, which we really enjoy on car trips or just to crank up while at home. You'll find yourself singing the music on here long after the kids have gone to bed.
Music kids and parents can enjoy.......2007-06-01
Dan Zanes' music is fun and genuine and does not come across as so many recent bands that seem to be trying to cash in on Playhouse Disney and Noggin. He works with lots of guest musicians and the diversity is refreshing.
Fantastic Mix for Kids & GrownUps.......2007-05-26
I was so impressed with this CD from beginning to end because it really exposes kids to different music styles. I now catch myself listening to some of the songs even when the kids aren't around. I think that this is the right kind of compilation for just lounging with your little ones - except of course that many of the songs do make you want to get up and boogie.
Quickly became a favorite!.......2007-05-26
I purchased this CD for my children - ages 2 and 4 - and they immediately fell in love with it. We play it in the morning to get our day started; we play it during the day to laugh and dance together; and they ask to have it on every night to go sleep with. I enjoy the songs, too, which is HUGE! A few weeks after this purchase we attended a Dan Zanes and Friends concert and my kids were thrilled to see their favorite singer in person. I highly recommend this cd.

This 1962 recording represents Oscar Peterson at his most commercially accommodating, yet his trio with Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen never fails to swing. The program includes such familiar melodies as the title track (which began life as Duke Ellington's "Happy Go Lucky Local"), "Georgia on My Mind," and "The Honeydripper." With the notable exception of the gospel-like original "Hymn to Freedom," most of the tracks clock in at around three minutes. This reissue contains several alternate takes that were wisely left off the original LP, including such unlikely jazz vehicles as "Volare" and "My Heart Belongs to Daddy." --Rick Mitchell
Customer Reviews:
Night Train - Oscar Peterson.......2007-06-26
Nice, easy listening jazz.
One tune is repeated and some studio tracks end rather abruptly, but the rest is great.
Amazing performance, less than perfect recording.......2007-06-20
Each song is full of passion, creating a heart-warming atmosphere. One drawback of this CD is that the sound quality is not very good. I wish there was an SACD version of this recording.
Must Buy, Especially For Jazz Pianists.......2007-04-24
Wow, this is a great CD. I love listening to it and many great pianists have been influenced by Oscar Peterson. He is an amazing genius.
Essential Peterson.......2007-03-23
This is the Oscar Peterson album that everybody should have. Committed followers know its one of the very best, and newcomers won't find anything too dificult on it. This is the first CD I ever bought 21 years ago and I've been playing it ever since.
The basic feel of the album is blues. C Jam Blues, Night Train, Thing Ain't What They Used To Be, Moten Swing and Honey Dripper are all blues or blues related. However there's great variety amongst these tracks, contrast the mellow version of "Things Ain't What..." with the swinging version of "Honey Dripper".
On this album Peterson makes everything sound effortless, whether its his uptempo playing or superb ballad playing (such as on I Ain't Got It Bad..). My favourite track is Ellingtons Band Call. At the end of the track Oscar plays 3 increasingly syncopated resolutions leading on the 4th occasion to the end of the tune.
Perhaps the only thing you don't get on this album is the virtuoso Peterson (try the "The Trio" or "Tracks" for this). Sure some of this stuff requires excellent technique, but even at this level Oscar still has another gear.
As previous reviewers have said, special mention should be made of "Hymn To Freedom". This is a marvellous Peterson original with a great performance. A fitting way to end a superb album.
A mature Oscar Peterson.......2007-01-14
Oscar was 36 when he and his favorite bass player, Ray Brown, teamed up with Ed Thigpen on drums to record this confident, mature cool jazz collection in 1962. In a very good sense this is a commercially enjoyable studio-recorded collection of safe tunes and some originals. Generally upbeat defined by Oscar's fingers dashing from one end of the keyboard to the other.
If you're unfamiliar with Oscar's work, this is the place to start...then go backward in time and forward. This son of Canada is still living, and may he do so for a long time.

Beautiful Title Track - A Few Other Good Songs.......2007-03-28
Overall, I'd recommend this album. Some of the songs are mediocre, but Josh Turner has the voice to pull it off.
"Long Black Train" is a good album but a terrific, individual track. The song is haunting and the deep, rich voice of Josh Turner makes for good listening whether or not you are a fan of country music. LBT has such an old-time, revival meeting feel to it that hand-clapping is almost mandatory.
Long Black Train by Josh Turner.......2007-03-09
The song selection does not show case Josh's voice as well as the album, Your Man.
DYE-NO-MITE!!!.......2007-02-12
One of the greatest voices I've heard during my 67 years of hearing. And I enjoy everything except opera and rap. If Josh had made his debut during the 50's or 60's, his name would be headlined right alongside Waylon's, Willie's, Merles, Buck's, etc, etc. Buy it! You will not be disappointed.
Long Black Train.......2007-02-06
This album is not near as good as your Man. Didn't care for it.

His first CD, absolutley Great! Deep soulfull bass voice is great for anything spiritual.

Blue Train is one of those ineffable sound recordings that actually seems to capture a moment of perfect artistry. Coltrane was in the midst of a Prestige recording contract but was able to honor a previous commitment to Blue Note and release this one album. With four Coltrane originals, including the haunting theme of the title track, and one standard, this recording showed Coltrane was becoming the complete package: player, composer, and bandleader. What distinguishes this session from the Prestige dates of the same time is the easy, relaxed, and obviously well-rehearsed playing of the group, and the usual masterful recording by Rudy van Gelder. This enhanced CD-ROM also features two alternate takes. The well-designed multimedia elements, including musician interviews and pictures from the famous van Gelder studio, round this stellar session into an experience that informs and delights over and over. --Michael Monhart

i have actually met people who live without this album. whenever i think about that, i shake my head in wonder. i don't know how they do it.
"Trane at his best. Lee Morgan not far behind........2006-11-04
For me John Coltrane's best period was during his stint with Miles Davis, who was able to focus 'Trane's explosive impulses and make him not play so many notes, but instead the RIGHT notes. This album was recorded during that phase and it's Coltrane at his best. The songs are great and the solos memorable.
In the liner notes is a quote from a jazz musician-I forget who- who claimed that "'Trane made those other guys(the sidemen)look ridiculous. Like amateurs..." or something to that affect. The only thing ridiculous is that quote from my perspective. Lee Morgan plays with a fire and dexterity far beyond his 19 years. He doesn't allow himself to get caught up in a note-burning contest with Coltrane, but instead follows his own inner vision and plays beautifully. His understated opening salvo on the title cut is classic. 'Trane has just finished a fast, long and amazing solo and instead of trying to match it's intensity(an impossible task)Morgan goes for the less-is-more approach, softly hitting a few notes and stepping away from the mic for a pause. Then he repeats. If he didn't have the respect for JC that I know he had I would almost daresay that he was making fun of 'Trane's excess!
The rest of the players acquit themselves admirably as well. An essential album.
This album got me into Jazz.......2006-07-21
This is the album that inspired me to be a jazz musician. When I was in high school, deciding what I wanted to do with my life, debating whether to pursue a career in music or not, it was this album which made me sure that music would be something that I would stick with. The moment I heard it, I couldn't stop listening to it. The sounds are hypnotic and draw me into them every time I listen to the album again.
Everything about this album is perfect. I don't think there is a jazz ensemble that can play as tightly together as the sextet on this album. The solos are exciting, driving, interesting and innovative. There are little things that the rhythm section and the horns do as backgrounds behind the soloist. The arrangements on here are great for a jazz sextet, and really gives the group a great big sound.
This album was the culmination of Coltrane's career as a saxophonist. Each musician on here is the best at what they do. This is the album which defines what post-bop really is. If you are a jazz musician, this is the standard that you should try to attain. I don't think there will ever be a saxophonist as influential as John Coltrane.
Jazz Masterpiece.......2006-01-31
I cannot agree more with these dead-on reviews, this is a masterpiece. Every song is enjoyable, though the title track is the best...Coltrane's intensity here is stunning! Of course, there's also some fine double-bowed bass on Moment's Notice, more good sax playing (Biiiiiiig surprise) from Locomotion, and a great ballad in I'm Old Fashioned. My second-favorite, though, has got to be Lazy Bird, surpisingly uptempo considering its title. (Oh well, not complaining of course). Buy this!
BLUE TRAIN: straight up.......2005-09-22
this is great album from John's musical career in the late 50's. the title cut is a classic as well as "Moment's Notice" which is one of my favorite Coltrane songs ever. love that melody.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
In 1999, Train came out of nowhere with the single "Meet Virginia" and soon after found themselves the proverbial overnight success. The San Francisco band with a penchant for the Southern jam could very easily be one of those acts that fade from memory after a lone hit. But the follow-up Drops of Jupiter makes that misfortune highly unlikely. The band employs tools of the roots-rock trade--mandolin, harmonica, bongos, and crisp acoustic guitar--to evoke that sort of "everything's gonna be all right" sentiment common in so many great pop rock songs. But this isn't a band that relies solely on its precursors for inspiration. These accomplished musicians never overplay, and understand the value of a well-placed synthesized accent or guitar effect. On tracks like "I Wish You Would," they command a plugged-in assertion that lends an inspiring jolt to their acoustic instrumentation. The title track is the album's epicenter. With swelling strings and chorded piano melody, the song sounds as if it were lifted from some lost tapes of Elton John's Madman Across the Water. It sweeps you up in an irresistible top-of-the-lungs sing-along and becomes the reference point for the rest of the album. Radio-friendly rock bands these days tend to be virtually indistinguishable from one another, but Train breaks from the crowd, charging full steam ahead. --Beth Massa
Customer Reviews:
Train continues to be a success...........2006-10-02
'Drops Of Jupiter' was Train's sophmore release and it was hugely successful making many people realise that the band's hit with 'Meet Virginia' wasn't a one off success but that this band had a genuine talent. In this brilliant album release, Train straddles the easy melodies of pop rock with a rock jamming beat. Train comprises of 5 men with age and majestic experience behind them and it flows into their music. Pat Monahan has a excellent voice for singing, the words come out clean and pure and he doesn't range into the screams that many modern rock lead singers vaccilate towards.
The album begins with a feel good song in 'She's On Fire' that is easy to sing along to with simply an amazing chorus. This is followed by the semi introverted 'I Wish You Would' and then the self titled song that became a radio staple 'Drops of Jupiter' that is one of Train's best songs. Another decent song is 'Hopeless' with a jamming rythmn and qaint lyrics. My favourite song on this album was the ageless beauty of a tranquil 'Whipping Boy' that Pat sings with a soft reserve and is a serenade for those downtrodden. The rest of the songs are fillers but still enjoyable and engaging in their own right and respect.
This album is a must for any Train fan or soft-rock enthusiast. A perfect album for a romantic evening or a night out with friends or family. Train followed this album with more respect and fame.
It's okay, not wonderful........2006-02-25
I'm not going to repeat what everybody's said, but yes, most of the songs on this CD don't have as much feeling as "Drops of Jupiter". If it were MY choice, i'd ask that they make a Single CD on that song. It's very...soothing. It makes you sort of reminisce what's happened to you, what's happening, and what's to come. The rest of the songs are alright, but they're just not the sort of songs i can sink my teeth into and enjoy every bite my ears take.
Drops Of Brilliance And Loads Of Mediocrity.......2005-11-11
Like many reviewers, I can truly appreciate the title track, Drops of Jupiter. Great vocals, super keyboards and heart felt lyrics make this song(not CD) a true winner.
The rest of the CD just sounds like run of the mill pop that is here today gone tommorow. She's On Fire, Its About You, Missisippi, and Let It Roll On are semi-memorable tunes with a few good harmonies thrown in for good measure.
Otherwise this group sounds like they are merely trying to find their sound. It's too clean and pretty to be rock n roll but not natural enough to be country. Its merely syrupy hum drum pop that does not offend me but certainly does not move me either.
Good CD.......2005-09-10
I bought this CD as a gift and it has been used every day. Recipient said he enjoys ALL the music & is VERY glad to have received it. I also like to listen to it.
The "16th Avenue" Effect.......2005-05-26
Back twenty or more years ago Lacy J. Dalton sang 16th Avenue, a superb country song about unknowns seeking their musical fortune in Nashville. One verse had this lyric:
Ah, but then one night in some empty room
Where no curtains ever hung
Like a miracle some golden words
Rolled off of someone's tongue
Well, that's Train. They had the miracle of Drops of Jupiter and who knows where it came from, but come it did, like a slap to the face and always remained fabulous with every overplayed-on-the-radio hearing. (Though I could do without all the "na-na-na-na-na" background over the last minute or so.)
And beyond that, there is not a single thing on this CD worth hearing, relentless mediocrity, as if one were trapped on the state fair circuit, hearing big-haired bands from the 80's eternally playing their semi-hits while roller coaster and dodge 'em cars add to the aural clutter.
Two stars for one miracle of brilliance.

Train is building a reputation as one of rock's tightest outfits one single at a time. The clever and sweet "Meet Virginia" was eclipsed by the gorgeous "Drops of Jupiter." My Private Nation may well prove these guys can squeeze more than one hit out of the album--although none are as enchanting as their breakthrough single. They continue to gravitate toward Elton John-inspired keys-and-guitar arrangements that are marked by studied rhythms and stellar production. While there's inventiveness to be found in these songs, there's a sameness to the tracks that makes the album as a whole fall a little flat. While attempting to recapture the grandeur of "Drops of Jupiter" on the opening song, "Calling All Angels," they overreach, and the pop-culture references scattered throughout date almost instantly. My Private Nation is a clean, intelligent disc, but it's also safe and middle of the road. Train's fans would be richly rewarded if the band took a few more risks. --Beth Massa
Customer Reviews:
Definitely a good listen........2007-02-26
Starting out with the one two punch of "Calling All Angels" and "All American Girl" was interesting. I was waiting to see if the band could match the energy and sheer tuneful nature of these two cuts. I found myself impressed because the band maintains the quality throughout. I think the band was finding their footing after the uneven nature of DROPS OF JUPITER. There are a number of good cuts here from the edgy title cut to the plaintive "Lincoln Avenue" there is a maturity here and it is appreciated. I still think the lyrics are still a bit simplistic, there is no mystery everything is spelled out a bit too clearly, but this is definitely a good listen.
3 stars is actually VERY good..........2006-10-19
Personally I like to compare music on a larger scale, from band to band and generation to generation...it makes no sense to me to rate a band against itself within it's own catalog. That being said, if an album like Led Zep's "Stairway to Heaven" gets 5 stars, you should be able to appreciate the 3 star rating here.
Train is a very unique band with a southern flair that sports respectable talent and enjoyable creative/energy. The commercial stuff on this album will appeal to most and (that alone) can justify purchasing this CD. For some of us, like myself, however, there's much more enjoyment to be had. For instance, my favorite song on this CD is "Save the Day" - it's fun/upbeat, it's very clever in using analogies (the lyrics are great if you "get it"), and it's a very different and unique sound that shows "personality". "Calling All Angels" on the other hand, in my ears, is a very boring song that I usually skip past. Go figure.
In short, if you like what you heard on the radio from Train, you will really enjoy this CD - one song or another.
The ride continues.......2006-03-18
My Private Nation is without doubt the strongest of Trains albums to date. From the opening bars of Calling all Angels thru to the closing I'm about to come alive, the band alternatively rocks, croons, harmonises and generally pleases this punter. OK I know its a different genre, but I think Train is to the 2000's as the Eagles were to the 70's. Sorry Train! What I mean by that comment is Train's ability to bring together many influences and deliver great rock music. There melodies and harmonies are right up there and they above all are having fun. I digress, the point is Save the Day, Get to Me and the title track are classics. Am patiently waiting for the 4th album to be released in NZ, the single "Cab" is here and fantastic so I can continue my Train ride.
Finally!.......2006-02-19
Let me preface this review with some demographics. I'm a classic rocker that grew up in the late 70's and early 80's. Led Zeppelin, Styx, The Eagles and Journey, and the like, will always be what "real" rock is. Unfortunately I have spent the better part of two decades wondering what the hell happened to rock music. While following the careers and products of those from my past, I also listened to all the new stuff and just didn't get it I guess. But as I kept trying, the newbies all pretty much seemed like flash in the pan artists seeking their 15 minutes of fame.
Train has what I've been missing and this album (CD) brought it all together. They got it right, and are right on. This CD is easily one of the ten I have to take to my deserted island. Yes right up there with Led Zeppelin (4) and The White Album, Boston, And Etc. To be honest I've always struggled with who else would fill out that list. But this one will be there.
Many of the feelings and issues dealt with here just seem to speak to me personally and maybe that's my connection. But At my age I was losing my faith in rock and roll its future and wondering if I'd wasted my life as rooted to music as it has been. Train and this album have saved me.
Calling all Angels will be a classic in the annals of Rock and Roll, mark my words, and wait and see. But When I Look to the Sky, has touched my soul, and will be one of those songs I sing to myself when no one else is around and I need to reset my bearings.
The artistry in this CD seems to show the maturation of the band and its members. I'm sure some of these were very personal to these artists. My greatest fear is that they will decide or worse be persuaded by others or society to move away from what they have used to get where they are. But the integrity of there music so far seems to suggest they can be here for the long haul. Hopefully they will shut out the noise and just play, while we all reap the benefits. I was getting worried that I hadn't heard of anything new from Train, but as of the day I wrote this I saw they just released For Me It's You. Thus my hope is building.
While Keith Richards might live forever, Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen, and Steve Tyler won't. Finally I have some hope for the future.
A Very Good CD.......2005-09-30
Very enjoyable to listen to. Get to Me is my favorite song.

Absolutely fantastic.......2007-07-06
Dream Theater's seventh album brings it to the table, dishes it out, and cleans up afterwards. A great album that, while only containing seven tracks, crosses the entire spectrum from the fast and heavy "This Dying Soul" to the calm and methodical "Vacant", easily more variation that many other bands out there can fit into albums with twice as many tracks.
Train of Thought has something for everyone, and for fans of Dream Theater, new and old, it certainly doesn't disappoint. And the more you listen to it, the more you grow to like it. Definitely a recommended buy, period.
I don't know what these people are on. This is definitely a great album........2007-06-28
One thing I've noticed with all Dream Theater reviews save a couple (which you'll find out which after you read this sentence): all the critical fans whine because it's not another "Images & Words" or perhaps "Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From a Memory". Both were good albums but while these fans proclaim to not want monotony they also criticize the albums for not being like them, which is something I, at least personally, find a bit contradictory.
I don't know if I'd call myself a Dream Theater album. This was actually the second album of theirs I bought after "Imges & Words" but even to this day I still listen to it and with gusto. Even the lyrics are impressive for the most part. "Face yourself, man/Brace yourself and trace your hell back!"
This album is one of their heavier albums, probably even the heaviest of all of them (though I haven't heard all of them yet, including the new album). If you like a more metal sound you'll like this. It may be more "straight up" or "direct" than their previous albums but it still has its "prog-ness" to it. There's not many soft songs on here except "Vacant", which is short. Other than that, the only real softness is on parts of "Endless Sacrifice" and "In The Name of God", and I say part because a lot of those songs have heavy parts too.
It's probably safe to say there's not as much of that typical synthesizer, organ-like keyboard work, if you know what I mean, and a lot more distortion. However, Jordan does some really astounding keyboard work with a distorted, guitar-like keyboard sound. If you're not familiar to this type of keyboarding, you'll probably think it's a guitar, like I did, but really it's just Jordan kicking a**. Seriously, great stuff. The rest of the instruments and vocals are great too. My favorites as of now are "Endless Sacrifice" because of that really great instrumental section which in my opinion has two of the best guitar solos John as ever played as well as one of the best dual solos Jordan and John have ever played; and "In The Name of God" because it has that "epic" feel I wish I could hear more of (in metal in general). The closing part where James goes, "In the name of Gah-aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahd/In the name of Gah-ah-aaaaahd!" is powerful and soaring and one of the best vocal lines I've ever heard from them and is the best part of the song. I find myself rewinding and listening to that part over and over because it gets me so hard.
Well, anyway, this is a heavy Dream Theater album with a lot of good stuff. It's not a repeat of "Images & Words" and "Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From a Memory" so spare me the tears. I don't know if it's better than their earlier albums, which have a lot to do with personal preference as Dream Theater generally releases quality albums and there's so much to examine in all of them. However, I think it's one of Dream Theater's better albums and definitely worth the buy. It may not be perfect but that doesn't mean it's worth the unfair, crap rating people are giving it.
One Hott Album!!.......2007-05-25
Dream Theater was introduced to me through the group Savatage and Trans-Siberian Orchestra. ( I'm a heavy fan of both groups ) I also listen to other groups such as Genesis,Kansas,Yes,ELO,Rush and the like. After putting this album on and listening to it several times,I could hear traces of those other groups in different parts of the recording. I give it a 5 star here because the drummer really shines here - ( ok,I'm a drummer for over 30+ yrs.) In a nut shell, this recording is not only a first for me,but one that will be in my liabary for along while!!
Go get ahold of this recording if you like your music loud, fun and strong --- you will wide up with more than a grin on your face as this album "lets it all hang loose!" :-)
Enjoy!!!
Blows Away All Other Metal Posers.......2007-05-17
I thought I'd post a review for the non-Dream-Theater-fan. I don't qualify for that title anymore since over the past year or so I've gone from complete DT ignorance to DT nutcase.
With all that said, if you're like I was several months ago: wondering about the large catalog of DT offerings and not knowing where to start, AND if you really enjoy wild, heavy, monstrous guitar tone - bordering on some of the extremely heavy industrial or metalcore type of stuff, then THIS is the album to start with.
Then - once you listen to a couple of Petrucci's solos on this thing, you're sure to go buy the rest of their albums, because he's popping off the same kind of completely mind-blowing solos on nearly every song on every album... it's just that on this one he really has a grinding, chunky rhythm track on most every tune, and they really went out of their way to play metal.
At the same time it is extremely progressive, so I caution metalcore and industrial fans: if you become bored with your collection after taking in the complexities of Dream Theater... don't say you weren't warned: this band plays stuff twice as complex as anything you've heard before, and frankly that can include Vai, Gilbert, whoever... nobody goes to the Nth degree the way this band does: the skill level of everybody, not just the guitar player, is so over the top, you're hearing new nuances everywhere even after many, many listenings. (And note how the real DT afficianados are ripping this album for not being progressive enough... so give it a listen, and then imagine how mind-bending the rest of their catalog is).
One of the greatest heavy rock albums of all time!.......2007-05-15
For fans familiar with Dream Theater, nothing needs to be said about the musicianship. For new fans, it helps to listen to a song at least 5 to 10 times before passing judgement. The songs have so much depth that a listener cannot grasp it all with a single listen. I'm a guitar guy, John Petrucci is the most skilled rock guitar player in the world IMHO. Mike Portnoy's percussion on this album is mind boggling. Not just technical, but really accessible and interesting. This album, along with Octavarium, DT displays a new level of polish with their song writing that really appeals to my ear. Buy this album, listen to it ten times, and prepare to become a new obsessive Dream Theater fan.

Album Description
The Old 97's have a rich, organic sound that effortlessly fuses roots rock, alt-country twang and pure pop sensibilities. Known for the raw intensity of their live shows and the authentic Americana-spiked punch of their recordings, the band formed in Dallas, TX, in the early `90s. Their early singles and 1994 indie debut disc, Hitchhike To Rhome led to a trio of critically acclaimed and crowd-pleasing albums for Elektra, beginning with 1997's stellar Too Far To Care and running through 2001's Satellite Rides.

I'm sick of the old 97's.......2007-07-06
Bought this for my husband and he absolutely loves it. I'm sick of hearing this everytime we get into the car but he enjoys it so.
Highly recommend.
This is the Best of the Old 97's.......2006-07-23
If you have ever heard an Old 97's song, and have liked that Alt/Country/Rock sound. This CD is a good choice. My personal favorite song is,"TimeBomb". The songs are well written and performed. Its a different kind of music to listen to. But it is something to check out if you've never tried it. I don't know how anyone can listen to Top 40, other than 12 year old girls! So if you appreciate good solid music, this is something to check out.
More of a 'Great Sampler' than a 'Greatest Hits' Collection.......2006-07-18
I've been a fan of Old 97's for a while now, so it's easy for me to recommend "Hit By a Train: The Best of Old 97's." The only problem I'm having is trying to figure out exactly why this is considered a "best of." Quite frankly, each of their albums stand quite well on their own, and in many ways equals the overall quality of this collection. There are a few songs here that I personally would not have included, ("their rendition of "El Paso", for instance), while there are plenty of songs from each studio album whose inclusion would have been easily justified ("Wreck Your Life"'s "W-I-F-E" and "The Other Shoe," and "Too Far to Care"'s "Streets Where I'm From", for instance). Nevertheless, "Hit By a Train" is an entertaining listen from start to finish. In that sense, this is more of a sampler than a collection of their best hits.
Miller has a tendency toward song-title puns that don't do justice to the songs themselves ("Cryin' Drunk," "Crash on the Barrelhead" - not included here), but this only points out his self-consciously clever way with a phrase. The band has obviously mastered the two-step `train beat' (3 tracks here) and the hard-bouncing "Texas shuffle" (which accounts for eight of the CD's eighteen tracks), but it's Miller's lyrics that keep you coming back for more, even after repeated listens. Miller's albums as a solo artist certainly hold up well, but it's his work with Old 97's that is most effective, which is why this collection works as well as it does. How can you not love an album containing "Barrier Reef," "Lonely Holiday," "Jagged" and "Victoria," all on the same disk? "Hit By a Train" encapsulates some of the band's best moments, and hardcore fans of the band will want this if only for the non-album tracks (the above-mentioned "El Paso" and "Cryin' Drunk"), but casual fans would do well to continue exploring their catalog further. A- Tom Ryan
Excellent Retrospective.......2006-06-25
If you like Uncle Tupelo, Whiskeytown or Ryan Adams or just great country tinged rock, youll love the Old 97's, although if you like any of the above you probably already know the Old 97's. Rhett Millers's songwriting is great. He has that lyrical ability that writers like Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson and later on Ben folds have, which is to be completely funny and sarcastic in a profound and ironic way and he writes killer melodies with great hooks. Like any great songwriter he has a great band. ken, murray and philip are great. The old 97's are one of the most consistent bands around, if you like one cd youll probably like them all. This is definetly worth picking up. Even if you dont like country you might still like them, they have as much of a Replacements, Stones, Costello influence as they do The Byrds or Gram Parsons. My only complaint was that this Best of didnt contain the songs Big Brown Eyes, Wish the Worst or Wont be Home.
A Foolproof Plan.......2006-06-23
Buy this cd. You will love some of the tracks intensely. Then, go buy the original cd's those tracks appeared on. Soon you will love those cd's and every song on this one (except maybe 1 or 2) and you will have to own the entire Old 97's catalog. Maybe it costs you around $100 total. But it will give you years of intense listening pleasure. It's the best deal ever. Plus you can catch them playing a show and even though you know all the songs by heart, they will still make you smile ear to ear. Trust me.
If you're really head over heals after all that, get Rhett's solo stuff. You'll like that as well. And if you're a metro-sexual type, be sure to get his latest release "the believer" because you will like the picture on the cover.

Randy Travis - Glory Train - AWESOME!!!.......2007-06-27
I have all of Randy Travis' gospel CDs and they are ALL wonderful. This one is no less wonderful. I love his rendition of Jesus On The Mainline and the absolutely beautiful renditions of Here I Am To Worship and Heart Of Worship. I can hardly wait for another Travis gospel CD. Thank you thank you Jesus for Randy Travis!

What a great christian CD - I thoroughly enjoyed this one! Most of these were new to me but I soon was able to sing along with Randy and the theme song really made me glad to know that I am riding that train bound for glory - a real soul stirring album.
A Classic .......2007-01-03
Randy's voice just gets richer as the years roll by.
I love the song selections here and the band could not be better.
So listen up, lovers of gospel music, and get on the right track for the Glory Train.
Glory Train - Randy Travis.......2006-11-11
The CD has both praise and worship songs on it. It also has some songs that even my 86 year old mother likes. Randy puts his own special touch on each song, and even songs I've heard for years are changed so that they are even more inspiring.
Superb Mountain Soul.......2006-06-16
This generous collection of many standards from the gospel and "mountain soul" tradition is priceless. Randy sings them with genuine feeling and fervent conviction; you truly believe in his belief in every word he sings. The instrumental accompaniment is professional to the nth degree with some dizzyingly fast guitar and Dobro solos. Yet for all the virtuosity the musicians convey warm tones and heartfelt emotions throughout. Randy Travis brings new meaning to these timeless standards.

Amazon.com's Best of 2000
Talib Kweli is probably the only MC who could do justice to "For Women," Nina Simone's righteous, ragged battle cry, and he does so with his cover on Reflection Eternal. That cut illustrates this album's timeless quality, its personal poeticism, and its strength. Kweli's lyrical skills have only improved over time, approaching the stuff of legend. And producer Hi-Tek's supple grooves balance the wordcraft perfectly. --Lizz Mendez Berry
Amazon.com
Silencing any suggestions that he's any less capable than his more high-profile Black Star partner Mos Def, Talib Kweli, along with DJ Hi-Tek, crafts a masterful debut with Reflection Eternal. Like Mos, Kweli displays an impressive range of styles and sensibilities--whether popping party lyrics on "Move Something," reflecting on the mysteries of the heart for "Love," or musing on hip-hop's death and rebirth for "Good Mourning." In comparison to Mos Def's status as a new funk soul brother, Kweli's more of a b-boy bookworm--erudite and articulate, but he can also let fly with fire and spark on the mic anytime. DJ Hi-Tek finally gets to show off his full range of production ability with a blend of hot, aggressive tracks ("Blast") and relaxed groovers ("Memories"). As good a debut as you could ask for. --Oliver Wang
Customer Reviews:
Talib Kweli and Hi Teck Makes You Want To "Move Somethin" (Rating: 10 out of 10- -5 stars).......2007-01-31
You can argue that Talib Kweli & DJ Hi Teck are the best emcee and DJ duo since Pete Rock & CL Smooth. When I first discovered them was when I was at home listening to the Music Choice Rap Channel, when the song "This Means You" popped on. That song alone wanted me to go and get that album, because of it's excellent wordplay by Kweli and Mos Def, with the production of Hi Teck.
There is not much I can say that already hasn't been said, seeing the average rating is at it's max. As I mentioned before, Kweli's rhymes are superior to hear. Being as young as I was at the time this dropped (around 14 or 15), trust me, I've never heard someone rhyme like that before. A perfect example where Kweli runs free on the mic is the song "Some Kind Of Wonderful". Another track that stood out was "The Blast" where even Hi Teck spits a verse that is also dope (the video had Talib doing two verses, but that is not on here. I'm kinda mad, since this is reissued).
Guest appearances are dope as well. My favorite would be Xzibit and Rah Digga popping up for the song "Down For The Count". Another would be the De La Soul contributed verses in "Soul Rebels". Production is also excellent by Hi Teck. Some of the song here are kind of laid back to listen to, but you can easily catch a vibe towards them.
"Reflection Eternal" (or "Train Of Thought" to some people) is one album that I can enjoy on many levels again and again. I remember listening to this album back in high school, and only a hand full of people knew who these guys were. If you ever get a chance, pick this us. The production on here is soothing and can clear your mind. If you are not familiar with Kweli, you might want to check out "Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Black Star". I just found out Hi Teck was in a group called Mood back in '97 and will listen to that as well. Arguably one of the best that came out of Rawkus. Word up.

Reflection Eternal/Train of Thought: Best CD you've never heard of.......2006-12-20
One of the best albums I've ever heard, I'd give it 6 stars if Amazon let me. With the exception of Gangstarr (though I think Kweli is lyrically superior to Guru), I have never heard an MC and producer mesh so effortlessly on a consistent basis like Kweli and Hi-Tek. This is a CD I put in and listen to without touching a button.
Both Talib and Hi-Tek display impressive versatility in their respective trades, starting the CD with a party track like "Move Something," then moving to songs like "Memories Live," and "Love Language". You see Hi-Tek's jazz influence in songs like "Love Speakeasy," and "Good Mourning,". I also love the Nina Simone samples. The bonus track "For/Four Women," is a song which chronicles the trials and tribulations of Black Women since they arrived to this country centuries ago. Finally, on a personal note, "The Blast" is my favorite song in the whole wide world. Not saying you should care, but that tells you how I feel about this CD. I will listen to this when I'm 50 years old and I have no doubt about that.
That being said, it absolutely KILLS me that Kweli later comes out with LPs like "Quality" and "Beautiful Struggle," and gets very few to no tracks from Hi-Tek. It boggles my mind. When you look at the results of Reflection Eternal/Train of Thought and Blackstar, it becomes clear that the duo makes great and refreshingly intelligent music. In today's rap climate, that is clearly not the norm. I don't have an afro and I don't wear Cowrie shells or dashikis, but yes, it is great to hear rap music of some substance, celebrating black music and black people. I still treasure my copies of Reasonable Doubt, Illmatic and Life After Death, but this one's also in my special CD case...
The CD is a blast.......2006-10-09
I love the concious rap, the nature of it is so real. I can go by these tracks because of what they represent; the essence. The top 5 songs of the album:
1 The Blast
2 move somthin
3 Down for the Count
4 Good Mourning
5 Eternalists
Very impressive........2006-09-01
I'm always up for intelligent hip-hop, and "Reflection Eternal/Train Of thought" is filled to the brim with creative rhymes, head-bobbing beats, and powerful messages. For example, "Too Late" is a song that mourns hip-hop's downfall. "Nowadays rap artists coming half-hearted/Commercial like pop or underground like black markets/Where were you the day hip-hop died?" It's so true it's almost eerie. Plus, the beat is amazing.
Another note-worthy song is "Name of the Game". An amazing piano sample plays in the backround, and Talib's crazy MC skills are practically jaw-dropping:
"'The name of the game is..'
Persistance, dedication
Consistant motivation
Resistance to stagnation of information
Distribute it free to the entire population
No hesitation
Makin it public
No privitazation from corporations"
Genius!! Seriously, no true hip-hop collection is complete without this gem. "RE/TOT" is sure to be remembered for years to come.
Brought a tear to my eye!.......2006-05-31
This is an absolutely amazing album created by the reflection eternal. Another release that focuses on making classic songs that mean something positive to people. Songs that you can play twenty years from now and they are still dope and relevent to your life. Support emcees that have talent, not materialistic artists that make songs that will help you into a jail cell.
