With one disc custom-mixed by DJ Hype and the other by Ellis Dee, the album introduces listeners to an entire world of drum & bass antics via artists like Alex Reece, Kenny Ken, the Brainkillers, and the Terrorist. Like many drum & bass compilations, this collection includes a smooth assortment of speedy rhythm machines intersecting with wordless female vocals, reggae, jazzy samples, and low-end rumblings. Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

This is a very nice CD when I put it in to play my whole house relaxed and clamed down and just listened very nice. The drumming is fantatsic, but if you do not like native american flutes not a CD for you in some parts of the CD the flutes are very loud. But I really enjoy this CD.

I really enjoy both CD's Sacred Spirit Drums and Drum Medicine. I live in an area of very little resource for this type of purchase- I was very happy to find what I wanted online- also very glad to be able to listen before I purchased- would not have bought them without that. Call it an aggregation of some of the best contemporary percussionists: Trilok Gurtu, Zakir Hussain, and Asian Underground star Talvin Singh combine under the sonic washes of producer Bill Laswell to show the possibilities of Indian percussion. It's definitely a beatfest, but one of subtlety, where what is being said isn't as important as the way it's being stated, and the dialogue between hands includes a lot of silences. Gurtu comes from a more jazz tradition, Hussein a classical background, and Singh represents the brash young things of the dance floor. Mostly Laswell leaves it to them to provide the sonic entertainment, which is as it should be with delicate swathes of sound barely intruding, just coloring the proceedings. While it's not for everyone, those who love Indian percussion in all its forms will find this album a complete joy. --Chris Nickson

It's interesting how the negative reviewer below can speak of "delving" into so many styles of music, yet evidently came into this album with a pre-conceived notion of what it should be. This album makes no claim or attempt to be "classical" Indian music, except for maybe the last track. This album IS a fresh collaboration among some of the world's most talented performers (Indian and otherwise) that had my jaw firmly planted on the ground from the moment I hit "play". Hearing traditional Indian instrumentation combined with western production proved to me that nirvana or a great album of any style can only be obtained with an open mind. Absolutely amazing. 10 stars...

Still one of my favorites..........2006-05-07

I'd been a fan of Bill Laswell and Talvin Singh before, but this album introduced me to Tabla and the skill of Zakir Hussain. Years later, I own more classical tabla albums from Hussain and others, but I still come back to this one. I love it so much I started playing tabla this year.

Favorite tracks: "Palmistry" and "Alla."

I really don't want to be mean, but I find this album very shallow. Classical Indian music is a very complex, subtle and beautiful thing. Comibining it in this way may help to get these wonderful tabla players to a wider audience, but the true energy has been tainted and lowered to make it palatable to simple-minded people who need westernized electronic and wishy-washy "world music" cliches. I don't find this music to be uplifting or enlightening or interesting. And this is not coming from a strict old fundamentalist of anything, I have delved deep into the avante guard, minimalism, "new music", eastern and western music theory, microtonal, etc. I would recomend jsut being a non-westernized album and getting the full benefit of tabla playing. However if your mainstay is jungle/drum&bass, then this would be a step up for you, so go for it, it is worth the pruchase in that case.

mr laswell has done many things,but this was quite a suprise!it consists of both chilled and upbeat tala(a middle eastern hand drum)drumming mixed with laz's trademark electronica that gradually fades in and out of the songs.it's a real trip-an-a-half for anyone not ignorant enough to dismiss it as "boring".

Only half the songs of the original set!!.......2007-01-17

Although I love the CDs, I was disappointed that there were only about half of the songs I thought there would be. I bought the original double cassette set back in the early 90's and when I found the CDs with the same name and cover, I thought I was getting the same thing only on CD. But the Cassettes had twice as many songs, including Let it Snow,Have Yourself a merry Little Christmas,The First Noel, Jingle Bells by Jim Reeves, The Christmas song by the Carpenters and so many others!!

This is a good, basic collection of Christmas Music. As a general rule, Time-Life has selected what is probably the definative artist/arangement of each song.

My only complaints are that there are only 24 songs on two disks and one or two of them are not ones that I would have picked (not my style).

Overall, it's a good set that I would recommend to anyone who wants to start a collection.

Very good improvised music.......2005-05-27

This animal however is exactly what the description on the label says and therefore is more suited for headphones to get every ounce out of the performance. I now use it for driving music and background while programming.

I ended up with this because it was on the "Now playing" rack as I was passing through the store. I usually prefer real music foreign or domestic. Yet even tough this is more experimental in nature, it mimics several other types of music, and I found the combination irresistible. There was no way I was just going to impulsive buy it and made them play the whole album to be sure that there was not some sort of ringer in there that did not match the feel of the other pieces.
The timing is just off enough that if you do not know Spanish that well, the only song that is slow enough to understand is 10. "Cuando".

Si*Se' Rocks!!!! I love this album, I love this band, They're fantastic live, They're fantastic all around. No 30 second snippet can give you a feel for how slick this music is. It's all over the place. The Songs take twists and turns but they're sexy, smooth and easy turns though, not jerky and wierd. Carol C's voice is amazing and The Live Strings and percussion give it an organic feel that gets lost in a lot of todays music. Everyone I've ever played this album for bought it. Hip Hop fans, Latin music fans, Pop fans, music fans across the board... every rating so far is a 5 dagnabbit. Buy it, immediately.

Music this good should not be so unknown.......2005-02-20

I don't typically like this style of music, but a friend gave me this CD for Christmas a while back, and I was blown away. It has so many textures and moods. There is something very real about this album. It made me feel things in a way that most other music does not. I highly recommend Si Se'!

New York's Quintessential Band.......2003-11-11

New York has a huge melting pot of people, and there's a certain feeling in the air during a humid, sweaty summer. Si-Se captures that feeling perfectly in their music. I had the opportunity to see them open for David Byrne back in 2001, and I immediately bought this album. It has consistantly been one of my favorite albums, and the blend of trip-hop, latin music, and pop is incomparable to any other band playing today. They are as unique to latin music as tool is to heavy metal, or aphex twin is to electronica. Si-Se is a genre unto itself.

Si-Se live is another beast altogether. In the past year I have seen them no less than 6 times, which is only about half of the times they've played. They play New York at least once a month, and tour various other states at least once a year. If they come to your town, SEE THEM. It's a show that will revitalize your hope in music for the 21st century.

I'm happy to see that they have maintained their rabid fan base in the 2 years since I first saw them, and while I hear there are some label problems delaying their second release, I will wait patiently, because I know I won't be let down.

Solid production.......2003-07-01

I was at the record store the other day and was able to sample some of the tracks, right from the beginning I needed to have this cd and bought it there on the spot. It is a very smooth mix of songs elevating on a nice downtempo feel and I would compare some of them to Bebel Gilberto's Tanto Tempo. The other reviewers who gave this album high marks are right on the money. You won't be disappointed.

Album Description

In the eastern Polynesian islands known as Hawaii, the making of music and dance is center on mele or chanted texts. Mele, sung alone, are said to be performed in the oli style (without dance or musical instruments). When coupled with hula (dance), they are called mele hula, and when the pahu drum is added the performance is called mele hula pahu. More specific terms are also applied to mele that are used for specific purposes such as processionals, prayers, and naming.

The practice of perpetuating tradition through the teacher-student relationship is strong in Hawaiian mele. Performers' styles are recognized, back through time, in their teacher's, and their teachers' teacher's styles. These recordings give a view of several performance styles of Hawaiian mele between 1923 and 1989, although the traditions and the mele reach much further back in time

Hawaiian Drum Dance Chants: Sounds of Power in Time is an excellent CD. These vintage recordings are true Hawaiian Hula Pahu songs, performed by some of the last few people familar with traditional Hawaiian culture. As the introductory notes say, this is music with a cultural and religious significance and deserves to be treated as such. Now that that has been stated, the music itself is well worth listening to. It is sung in Hawaiian, complete with linear notes, in both Hawaiian and English. I found the translations to be quite enjoyable, especially as they are presented in metric form. Unlike most other non-western forms of music, Hawaiian music isn't that unfamilar to western ears. Even if you don't speak Hawaiian, you probably can appreciate this deeply moving collection of music. The first six tracks are actually more "contemporary" Hula Pahu songs. Of them, Mele Pule, Mele Kahea and Hanohano ka uka o Pihanakalani are perhaps the most enjoyable. From then on, we are given traditional and historical recordings from the Bishop museum. These are some of the best parts of the CD. Astute ears will notice some key differences between these and previous tracks. Nonetheless, it remains quite enjoyable. Even though the quality of some of these tracks is a little scratchy, it is still an excellent CD.

A scholarly look at Polynesian folk music.......2002-11-13

The sparse sounds of "hula pahu," the plaintive sounds of Hawaiian hula songs. This is a pretty hardcore folkloric collection, with minimal drumming and bare-bones vocals. It's certainly not for most casual listeners, but invaluable for anyone seeking to make a serious investigation into the roots of Hawaiian music.

Haunting, Powerful.......2000-09-18

I found this music, despite it's fairly simple format (almost entirely voice and simple drumming) nonetheless weaves a dense fabric. It is at times haunting, often powerful, and worth repeated listenings.

If one likes traditional songs created during the days of the sail ship from the U.S. and England, then this is a good cd for that. I enjoyed it very much.

A greatest-hits disc after only four albums? Apparently, when you're as good as Love Spirals Downwards, you can get away with it--especially if you throw in a few remixes and rare tracks to make it worth your fans' while. Working its way backward through the band's career, Temporal provides a highlight reel of vocalist Suzanne Perry's ethereal musings and multi-instrumentalist Ryan Lum's moody atmospheres. And while it's perhaps not too much of a stretch to go from the 4AD-style bliss of early tracks such as "Mediterrenea" and "This Endris Night" to the heavenly drum and bass of later songs such as "Alicia" and "Ring," LSD have never left their core audience behind, most of whom would heed Perry's siren call even if she sang in a heavy-metal band. Cocteau Twins fans, the torch has been passed. --Steve Landau

i decided to purchase this cd solely for the song "depression glass" that my older sister had introduced me to. i had no idea who the band was, i just knew i loved the song. since i am not too familiar with other works, i had decided to start off with this hits compilation, and i have not been able to stop listening to it since then. the melodies are so beautiful and the voices angelic. i love how guitars give a semi strong powerful/semi soothing mood to the music [depression glass, kykeon, mediterrenea] while some tracks are more techno-oriented, like in ring, asleep, and madras. i cannot get enough of this cd, and anyone not familiar with this group but interested in this genre of music should definitely start off here. you won't regret it!

Beautiful, dreamy melodies.......2004-06-04

Founded by Ryan Lum, Love Spirals Downwards has been around since the early 90s. They're sadly no longer together but he's still signed to projekt records with a band called Lovespirals with new singer Anji Bee. I believe their sound is somewhat similar to this but I can't say for sure...

'Temporal' is LSD's final release and is a collection of music past & present. I'd been wanting to check this group out for a while but have always been leery of anything ambient based as it tends to lull me to sleep, and not because it's soothing but because it's boring! This, however, has altered my seemingly narrow perception.

While this is a compiled album of previously available material by LSD there's also a sparse amount of new tracks as well as exclusive remixes included here on their "greatest hits". I've never heard the originals before but on here "Alicia" is mostly downtempo drum&bass and "Misunderstood (I'll Always Love You)" is purely trip hop with some jazzy saxophones sounding in from time to time (those are the two remixes provided here).

Some tracks are supported by electronics with lilting sirens spiraling upwards while others are slower paced, relying more on acoustic instruments. But, no matter what, the textures never lose the lush, full and sumptuous sound they permeate that is always rich in atmosphere. In the early years Suzanne Perry was the main vocalist for LSD but later on her sister Kristen Perry took over and so I'm assuming that both voices can be heard throughout this record. However, I'm not 100% clear on that fact for nowhere inside the booklet does it specify who sings what. Every song is amazing, though, and as a whole it flows rather nicely and the beats are, in a word, heavenly.

LSD kinda reminds me of a more toned down version of Chandeen with a dreamier, female-fronted likeness of Lycia thrown in for good measure. I therefore recommend this to anyone who wants hypnotic soundscapes and ethereal voices that neither overpower nor serve as background accents to entrance and relax you, but without driving you to boredom.

{I truly love them all but my favorite tracks include: "Ring", "Asleep", "Madras", "Above The Lone", and "Depression Glass"}

Towards the Future..........2003-05-30

Beautiful music! Love Sprials Downwards have managed to criss-cross and unite new age/moods/ambient and chill-out all in one. An eclectic masterpiece and a wonderful blueprint of newest instrumental music. We have come along way from the great foundations of Windham Hill, Narada and others. This is the future!

Subtle pleasantries........2000-10-01

This CD slows my world down. Or maybe it just softens the edges a little; I'm not really sure which. The soft, echoing guitars and vocals are conducive to writing; even after the CD's finished playing, the melodies remain in my head, helping to coax new descriptions out of the things around me.

Two paws up for the track arrangement, too; the drum 'n bass tracks in the beginning transition very nicely into the more ethereal-sounding tracks at the end. All together, the 13 tracks are more like one big, lavender, 66-minute mass. Kind of like the album cover, now that I think about it.

I'd compare Love Spirals Downwards to the Cocteau Twins, since that's what I'm most reminded of here, but I don't really see the point. LSD are similar, sure, but by no means derivative. Take my advice and appreciate this album for what it alone is... oh yeah, and for what it'll do to your mind. Trust me; you'll like it.

SOMETHING SO GOOD.......2000-04-13

Temporal is the only album by LSD I have ever heard, but not the only one I will ever buy. I discovered the band some weeks ago, and I haven't heard much of other music lately, because their music steals all my attention. I wouldn't be much wrong if I say they remind me a bit of Cocteau Twins and the moods I get in when I listen to them. I am looking forward to buy the other records they made, and in meanwhile I will enjoy this one.

Yo no lie, this is a quality CD.... The Music is earthy and modern with that ancient indian vein running through it. Its true when the others say no other CD compares to it. Its one of a kind. Can I go so far to say that some of the songs give my soul a warm feeling? No joke about this CD.....

Electronica goes to Machu Pichu.......2000-05-13

This is a mood album filled with various electronic styles including drum & bass, trip hop, trance and dub. The interesting aspect of this CD is the concept of mixing "ethnic" sounds that give it a primitive meets electronica sound. Very trippy stuff that will have you feeling very relaxed as though you were among the clouds in the higher elevations of Machu Pichu. The music is inspired by samples taken from an Incan music recorded album by Inti Raymi a UK band. Lots of pan flutes mixed with all the above electronic elements including vibes, nature sounds and haunting melodies. The CD plays heavily on the dub technique. This a compilation of groups including such heavies as "Trans-Global Underground"and "Fun-Da-Mental" among others. Sometimes the sound is more Eastern sounding as with "TGU's" "Cazares Mix" a sort of Hare Krisna goes to a rave at the Festival of the Sun. "F-D-M" has "Sufi Inca" that has tablas mixed in with flutes, an odd mixture but an interesting musical stew. This is kick back music to listen to when you want to feel in an other worldly mood or mute the sound while watching the Discovery Channel. It could be the soundtrack for an Incan expedition. Just a side note, the cover has an artists rendering of the famous Aztec Sun Calendar, by the way Aztecs are not Incas, they were two different civilizations.

I have had this CD since I started listening to techno/electronic music (about 4 years ago) and have not found a match for it quality-wise to this date. It is more thought provoking and emotionally stirring than any other CD I own; listening to it is an experience in itself!

One of the best cd's I've ever heard! Very moving and enchanting! We need more music like this! This music makes you think about how important it is to preserve the history of the Ancient people all over the world! We still have alot to learn about thier ancient roots and traditions. And this compulation is one way to feel what it must of been like way back then. Thanks for your concern.
