There's no scarcity of Donna Summer greatest-hits packages, but this chronological bargain-line disc eschews her rep as extendo-orgasmo dance-floor heroine in favor of her equally deserved rep as mistress of radio-friendly three-minute pocket symphonies. The production of Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte on the early stuff sounds like disco clichés because it invented them, and their fondness for cramming in instrumental details (check out the whistles on "Bad Girls") keeps the songs ecstatic. And the four-song condensation of Summer's post-Moroder career is a great mini-history of the way disco evolved into other kinds of dance-pop through the '80s as she picks up ideas from funk and reggae and ends up wailing her heart out on the gloriously plastic "This Time I Know It's for Real." --Douglas Wolk

5 out of 5 stars Donna Summer: ENDLESS SUMMER: GREATEST HITS (1994).......2006-11-18

In November of 1994, after releasing CHRISTMAS SPIRIT, Donna Summer next album entitled, ENDLESS SUMMER: GREATEST HITS, an album featuring sixteen of Donna Summer's all-time greatest hits, as well as featuring two new studio recorded tracks. This is an album that will make all of your Summer become an Endless Summer.

MELODY OF LOVE (WANNA BE LOVED)
New Song. The first song from the album. Great song.

LOVE TO LOVE YOU BABY (Single Version)
Original version from the album LOVE TO LOVE YOU BABY (1975). Great song. This track still remains a classic.

COULD IT BE MAGIC (Single Version)
Original version from the album A LOVE TRILOGY (1976). One of the greatest cover songs I have ever heard.

I FEEL LOVE (Single Version)
Original version from the album I REMEMBER YESTERDAY (1977). Still a classic.

LAST DANCE
From the original motion picture & original motion picture soundtrack THANK GOD IT'S FRIDAY (1978). Great song, still a classic.

MacARTHUR PARK (Radio Version)
Original version from the single MacARTHUR PARK (1978). Still a great song.

HEAVEN KNOWS
From the single HEAVEN KNOWS (1978). Great song.

HOT STUFF
From the album BAD GIRLS (1979). Still a great rock/disco song.

BAD GIRLS
From the album BAD GIRLS (1979). Amazing.

DIM ALL THE LIGHTS
From the album BAD GIRLS (1979). Seems as though Donna Summer's 1979 album, BAD GIRLS, was a massive hit. This is another great track.

NO MORE TEARS (ENOUGH IS ENOUGH) (performed by Barbra Streisand & Donna Summer) (Single Version)
Original version from Barbra Streisand's album WET (1979). Even this 4:43 minute radio/single version, this track is still the best Diva Duet I have ever heard.

ON THE RADIO
From the album ON THE RADIO: GREATEST HITS VOLUMES I & II (1979). Still a classic song. Can you imagine that this song is so popular that it is still being heard "On The Radio"?

THE WANDERER
From the album THE WANDERER (1980). Awesome song.

LOVE IS IN CONTROL (FINGER ON THE TRIGGER)
From the album DONNA SUMMER (1982). Great song.

STATE OF INDEPENDENCE
From the album DONNA SUMMER (1982). Great song.

SHE WORKS HARD FOR THE MONEY
From the album SHE WORKS HARD FOR THE MONEY (1983). Still an awesome song about all of the hard-working women out there. We guys have to remember that, "She works hard for the money, so hard for it, honey. She works hard for the money, so we better treat her right".

THIS TIME I KNOW IT'S FOR REAL
From the album ANOTHER PLACE AND TIME (1989). Still an awesome song that I cannot stop listening to.

ANY WAY AT ALL
New song. Great song.

This is a great compilation, but I wish that Donna would have included "Try Me, I Know We Can Make It", "Spring Affair", "Once Upon A Time", "Rumour Has It", "I Love You", "Sunset People", "Cold Love", "Unconditional Love" (performed by Donna Summer & Musical Youth), "There Goes My Baby", "Supernatural Love", "All Systems Go", "I Don't Wanna Get Hurt", & "Love's About To Change My Heart", but this album is still amazing, featuring most of Donna's greatest hits on one CD.

5 out of 5 stars Great 70s Disco Music!.......2005-12-25

Donna Summer is the ultimate queen of Disco. No doubt about it.

3 out of 5 stars Summer of Love. Donna is a disco primadonna(some times).......2005-09-21

Sure this is Donna Summer`s greatest hits. Some tracks blow you away, some dont. The new track on this album Melody of Love is not to much to shout hurray to. But when it comes to the classics that`s another cup of tea. And i dont mean the oldest one, but at the end of the 70 ths she troughly shine. It start`s with Track 9. Hot stuff and Track 10 Bad Girls. That`s what i called Disco with a sting in it. It brings sweet memories back to when the disco was cool and has a certain creativity over it. You can skip trough much of the other stuff. Track 10 Bad Girls is the ultimate Summer Hit, no over, no besides. That`s a fact Track 15 She works hard for the Money has enough tempo upbeat to make your dance. Also when she uses the same producers as early Sam Fox used back in the 80 ths(stock/aitken/waterman) Summer shines, especially on Track 17 and Track 18
This time i know its for real and I dont wanna get hurt.
Still Summer is good to listen to when the weather is bad. She still sparks sometimes

4 out of 5 stars Endless Summer.......2005-09-07

I must admit that I never really found Donna Summer that interesting (yes I'm a big disco fan) but somehow she just seemed like an obvious choice, so I stayed away. I woke up one day and decided to give it a try, so I bought "Endless Summer" which has all of her most well known songs compiled in their edited versions. All the hits are here: "Hot Stuff", "MacArthur Park", "Last Dance" and "Love to Love You Baby". I'm so glad that Donna didn't turn into one of those "has been" disco singers like Gloria Gaynor (I feel so sorry for her, aimlessly lost, she recorded some truly awful albums in the 80's with shameless covers of such songs as "I Will Always Love You", "Careless Whisper" and endless re-recordings of her only true worldwide hit "I Will Survive"). That being said, I do enjoy listening to both Gaynor and Summer, but I must say that I prefer Grace Jones and Loleatta Holloway any day over them. :)

5 out of 5 stars Donna Summer: GREATEST HITS (1998).......2006-11-18

In September of 1998, Donna Summer released her twenty-fourth album entitled GREATEST HITS, just keeping it simply, I guess. This greatest hits album is very good, but I wish more hits were included.

LOVE TO LOVE YOU BABY (Single Version)
Original version from the album LOVE TO LOVE YOU BABY (1975). Awesome song.

COULD IT BE MAGIC (Single Version)
Original version from the album A LOVE TRILOGY (1976). Awesome. I know that Barry Manilow is very proud of Donna's cover.

I FEEL LOVE (Single Version)
Original version from the album I REMEMBER YESTERDAY (1977). Great song.

LAST DANCE
From the original motion picture & motion picture soundtrack THANK GOD IT'S FRIDAY (1978). Still a classic.

HOT STUFF
From the album BAD GIRLS (1979). Great song.

BAD GIRLS
From the album BAD GIRLS (1979). Great song.

ON THE RADIO
From the album ON THE RADIO: GREATEST HITS VOLUMES I & II (1979). Awesome.

THE WANDERER
From the album THE WANDERER (1980). An awesome song.

LOVE IS IN CONTROL (FINGER ON THE TRIGGER)
From the album DONNA SUMMER (1982). Amazing.

STATE OF INDEPENDENCE
From the album DONNA SUMMER (1982). Amazing.

SHE WORKS HARD FOR THE MONEY
From the album SHE WORKS HARD FOR THE MONEY (1983). Great song.

THIS TIME I KNOW IT'S FOR REAL
From the album ANOTHER PLACE AND TIME (1989). A song I will never, ever get tired of.

This is a great album, but I do wish that Donna would have included "Try Me, I Know We Can Make It", "Spring Affair", "Love's Unkind", "Once Upon A Time", "I Love You", "Rumour Has It", "MacArthur Park", "Heaven Knows", "Dim All The Lights", "Sunset People", "Our Love", "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)" (performed by Barbra Streisand & Donna Summer), "Cold Love", "Unconditional Love" (performed by Donna Summer & Musical Youth)", "There Goes My Baby", "Supernatural Love", "All Systems Go", "I Don't Wanna Get Hurt", & "Love's Abou To Change My Heart". But, this is still an album that belongs in your Donna Summer collection.

3 out of 5 stars I Don't Understand Why This Was Made?.......2003-09-03

Like other reviewers, this is NOT a great hit colllection. Here's why: I will highlight her previous hit collections.
Buy:
1. On The Radio - Greatest Hits 1&2 -- If you only like her 70's music.

2. The Anthology Collection - If you want to dig deeper beyond a hits collection with 2 CDs.

3. Endless Summer - If you want THE major highlights spanning her entire collection up to 1994 including 80s tracks that obviously you won't have on On The Radio.

You can buy any of these 3 and not be disappointed. Anything else after that is UNNECESSARY unless you have money to splurge or Donna gets back on Top 40 radio (which I always hope for:)) Donna is certainly capable of a few more hits even though she is 54 years old.

3 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2001-10-25

I was really disappointed with this CD because of Donna Summers greatest songs were blatantly left out of this CD!

3 out of 5 stars Greatest Hits..Sure..Yeah Right.......2000-05-11

What a waste of time this one is. The only reason to buy it is the cover where Donna looks brilliant. A lot of hits are here ("Last Dance", "Bad Girls", "I Feel Love", etc.) but also many are missing ("Heaven Knows", Dim All The Lights", "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough", etc.). And once again "State Of Independence" lurks its head up in a place that an eighties track like the sweet "There Goes My Baby" or even the fun "Dinner With Gershwin" should be placed. The hits are also edits and nothing special. Spend a few more bucks and get the much better "Endless Summer" that comes with two new tracks. This looks like a bad rehash of that. And if you save up a few bucks, get "Donna Summer Anthology".

5 out of 5 stars ENDLESS PLEASURE.......2006-03-11

Endless Summer is a chronological collection of Donna's greatest hits from the middle 1970s (Love To Love You Baby) through the late 1980s (This Time I Know It's For Real).

It offers the best of her dance classics like I Feel Love, MacArthur Park, Hot Stuff, Bad Girls; the best of her ballads such as Dim All The Lights and On The Radio; plus great pop songs from the decade of the 1980s when she worked with a variety of producers.

My favourites amongst her post-disco work include the majestic State Of Independence and This Time I Know It's For Real. This collection proves that Donna could do it all - her mastery of various styles is complete and her talent has stood the test of time.

Five stars for this great album by a singer who was once the Queen of Disco but has proved herself a consummate vocalist and a true original long after the disco lights had faded.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars Summer Magic.......2005-03-11

This is a very enjoyable collection of the disco diva's greatest hits. The tracks can be classified into four sections, i.e. her early disco period includes Track 18 (the original) and Track 1 (A Remix) of the groundbreaking I Feel Love, plus tracks 2 to 7. Her highly successful late 1970s period is represented by Hot Stuff, Bad Girls, No More Tears and the ballad On The Radio, whilst tracks 12 to 15 come from her 1980s pop singer period and includes the Quincy Jones produced Love Is In Control and the magnificent spiritual song State Of Independence. Tracks 16 and 17 are her two greatest hits from the 1990s.

The CD proves once again that Donna was more than a dance diva; an exquisite interpreter of ballads and an accomplished pop artiste too. The songs that have stood the test of time the best include the brilliant synth-driven I Feel Love, her epic interpretation of MacArthur Park, the rock-influenced Hot Stuff and Bad Girls and the rousing State Of Independence. There is a plethora of Best Ofs and Greatest Hits compilations from Donna, and this album compares well to the best although it is not recommended to the completist.

Besides her excellent Bad Girls (De Luxe edition) and Once Upon A Time albums, I recommend the following compilations: The Donna Summer Anthology with 34 tracks, and The Journey with 20 tracks that were all hit singles in the USA.
