Didn't age well.......2007-03-24
It's ok and a must have if you're a aphex twin fan. It's interesting to hear some of the earlier aphex twin work, some of which I danced to at raves in the '90s. But unfortunately the songs don't hold up very well and are a extremely dated. Especially compared to his more recent work.
Most accessible aphex twin cd.......2005-05-07
I think, of all the aphex twin I've heard, this is the most accessible collection of songs. The songs are enjoyable, and as another reviewer noted, their stripped down simplicity gives them a lot of energy. I was expecting a more eclectic, difficult album, but I enjoyed it regardless. It was actually kind of a treat to hear such straightforward music under the Aphex Twin moniker.
A uncompromising collection of his earlier work............2004-10-20
For a artist, that can move from the relatively hushed brilliance of his critically acclaimed "Ambient" albums, through to the Skittering & Fractured Breakbeats of his "Richard D.James" album. Aphex Twin has never been a person that's been afraid to play with peoples expectations of his music.
Collected here, is a series of pre-fame Aphex Twin tracks (collated from various EP's and Singles), that although conceived, to give an overall perspective of his music (even though it is sold as a 'Collection' of sorts), but, more to provide a musical snapshot of where he originally started, as opposed to where he's currently ended up today. And because the majority of tracks here are complied from various EP's & Singles, buyers should be warned that there is a decidedly 'Disjointed' feel to the tracklisting, with no continuity to the sequencing of the tracks. Moving from somber and atmospheric Experimental Electronica one minute (The sublime "Digeridoo" is a great example of how truly creative his work can be), through to something a little more brooding and anxious ("Isopropanol" veers more towards Ambient Techno). Moving into the more accessible side of his music is "Polynomial-C" that feels more in line with the progressive techno/Industrial cross-over that he would later go on to perfect under the alias "Polygon Window", that's crunching and slightly abrasive, yet somehow mantains a rhythmic element, under the most strenuous of conditions.
So the question is, are these collection of tracks truly deserving to be included on this album?? Yes!!, of that there is no doubt, but if taken as a whole album, its something of a mess (although a fantastically created one). As tracks lurch wildly from restrained Electronica one minute, to (relatively) fierce and uncompromising Techno the next, and it's such a stylistic change in tempo, that the listener can't help but sit up and notice the rapid fluctuation in tempos. So...right about now, your probably asking yourself, "If he's criticising the tracklisting so heavily, why is he giving it 5 Stars???.....Simple, because these tracks were never designed to be pieced together from various sources and compiled to sit next to each other. So this was always going to be a fragmented listen, plus this isn't the place to start if your a first time listener to Aphex Twin, this is almost certainly aimed at those that have cut their teeth on his work previously, and are already familiar with what to expect (I.e. Anything). Taken as a coherent album...this fails, but as a relatively random collection of some of his more exceptional work, this'll take some beating.
great.......2004-05-09
Just great. I am a fan of his music for quite a while and all of his records are special in their own way. Tracks with a little twist only RDJ can add. Sometimes a bit sinister, but thats ok for me! Most of his tracks are sertainly refreshing and energy boosting. A philosopher teacher once said: "to enjoy and appreciate the quality of sertain aspects (of whatsoever) you have to have rotten spots besides it". In case of some of the tracks ("ventolin" (medicine for asthmatic patiens) for example in which you hear a sample of a person hyperventilating), annoying bleeps, cracks and sounds are added in such way that when they fade away in a track you almost feel a releef....a contrast between serenety and rotten (no offence)
Wonderful album for the RDJ fan, but not his best.......2004-04-10
I Didn't need to listen to this album more than once to know that it was going to be another incredible Aphex Twin listening experience. This is an interesting compilation, because it mixes many excellent tracks from the most repetitive facet of his hardcore style with some of the the most beautiful and catchy selections from his softer side (Polynomial-c, Analogue Bubblebath 1), resulting in a listening experience that sucks you in with the promise of beauty, and takes you on a hardcore Aphex Twin...head... trip.
Nonetheless, this is Aphex Twin we're talking about, and "Classics" is not his best album. On the softer side of Aphex soundscapes, I recommend "Selected Ambient Works 85 - 92", in the middle, "Come to Daddy EP", and on the hardcore side, "Caustic Window: Compilation". "Classics" is good... darn good. But those three are even better - Unless, you're looking for specifically what this album is - a flowing collection of good, repetitive, hardcore, classic Richard D. James tracks.

Album Description
Azuli Records' Choice series is fast becoming a who's who of influential figures in dance music, with previous releases by legendary artists such as Jeff Mills, Louie Vega, Derrick Carter, Danny Tenaglia, X-Press 2, Frankie Knuckles, and most recently, John Digweed - where each artist communicates their own musical influences, history and experience with their fans.
A good DJ's job is archaeologist, evangelist and salesman. Speak to Danny Howells for more than ten minutes and you'll know he fits the exact criteria. The tracks Danny has selected for Choice are not some rich tapestry of the history of dance music. This is his personal history - featuring tracks and remixes by Coldcut, Orbital, The Temptations, Urban Soul, PM Dawn, Todd Terry, Ce Ce Peniston, Japan, Sub Sub, Iron Butterfly, Fire Island and many more!
[This edition is unmixed.]
Customer Reviews:
An Important FYI..........2007-07-10
Just in case you missed the fine print (as I did) this is the UNMIXED version. That is, the tracks are not blended together as in usual DJ mixes. They are standalone, and separate.
The page notes this at the very bottom of the text description. It's very easy to miss if you're not paying attention.
1-star just to make sure that it's clear. Otherwise Danny Howells is an incredible dj. One of the best in the world. And this is a great CD. The mixed version is also available elsewhere on the site, with an interview DVD.
Choice Cuts.......2007-01-13
International DJ, Danny Howells, fresh off of one of the best years of his career, is the latest artist to showcase his diverse range of tastes via Azuli Records' Choice Classics series, an ongoing project that finds influential musicians and asks them to compile all of the songs and tracks that have inspired them most over the years.
Disc 1 provides the most uniformity in this package, with its progressively smoother melding of genres. The record starts with some classic house samples, redolent with crooning R&B ("Alright" by Urban Soul) and alive with salsa back beats ("Carino 90" by T-Coy). The disc drives this energy forward, growing heavier and heavier, hitting near-techno levels of metallic fervency ("12 Min To Do It" by Pleasure Dome). Howells steadily reduces the amp on the final five tracks, keying down through the stomp-heavy "Hocus Pocus" (by the band of the same name) and into the gorgeous gull-call scenery of Ready For Dead's fluidly flavorful song of the same name.
The second disc is fun, as well, but also much more uneven, probably owing to its heavy helping of old school funk and rock. Howells attempts the same sort of seamless arrangement that he pulls off perfectly in Disc 1, but that's hard to do when you're trying to blend The Temptations' "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone" into a three minute drum solo by Iron Butterfly (don't be fooled, "In A Gadda Da Vida" is on the track list, but all you'll hear is beats). This is passable, though, given the invigorating energy of the rest of the record. Sub Sub's high-pulse "Space Face" segues dreamily into Coldcut and Hexstatic's "Timer," one of the best deep house tracks I've heard in a long time. With the exception of "Why" by Carly Simon (a great tune that plays awkwardly as the closing track on this disc), the rest of the album is a rhythm-tribute to deep, funky house that will almost make you forget the earlier weak spots (which include the fourth track, Japan's "Ghosts," a synthetic pop number ruined by too much mood).
What!.......2006-08-21
Awful, what a waste of money, I didn't get it at all. Maybe 2 tracks which were OK. Hard to see how a DJ could use much of this material. Other reviewers seemed to like it, not me. I'll stick to GU's Howells offerings. Just my opinion.
Japan, Iron Butterfly and the Temptatons! .......2006-03-15
All in a row and it works really well... Very interesting combinations but moves and grooves... Super Choice!!! The GU Miami was great and this may actually be better...
Excellent work, Mr. Howells, sir........2006-03-05
I guess disc 1 is one of those "you had to be there" kind of things, and since I wasn't there, it didn't really grab me. And then......disc 2. If you're familiar with Mr. Howells' work, you'll know that his best work has a cetain unnameable quality to it (think Day disc of Global Underground's 24/7). If you know what I mean, then you'll find what you think I mean in full display on disc 2 of this collection, know what I mean? It's deep, kinda creepy and excellent. I can't seem to stop listening to it, and I don't mind if I don't. Get this disc, you won't be sorry. Hell, get 24/7,too.

Fantastic CD!.......2007-06-01
I love compilation cds. Songs from this collections frequently top my Most Played list. A few gems you may enjoy, A Higher Place (disc 1), Lola's Theme (disc 1), Put 'em High (disc 1), Love on my Mind (disc 2), and Music Sounds Better with You (disc 2). Still working my way through disc 3 but I am certain I'll find some great tunes on that one as well. The song selection is a great variety of different styles from Electronica & Dance themes. Another highly recommended CD!

Customer Reviews:
A must for avery Jam&Spoon Fan.......2007-02-09
I followed Jam and Spoon since the early days and they have always been very good. This CD is a must for everyone who likes their Music - especially as it is a homage to the late Mark Spoon.
A real treat.......2007-01-10
After being a fan of Jam & Spoon since their very beginnings, i was surprised to learn that a tribute album was released following the sudden death of Mark Spoon. The packaging & track-listing for this album is second-to-none. For those wanting a broad collection of their work, this is nearly a 10/10. CD1 (Remixes) has some real gems, namely rare tracks "Back On The Block" & "The Nobodies". Their unique remixing of songs you would not normally even associate with trance is brilliant. CD2 (Club Classics) draws from their very early "experimental" days ("My First Fantastic F.F.") to more recent work. I was dissapointed to see that "Find Me" & "Angel" weren't included here; both these tracks are a testament to their recording career. However, the "Loveparade 2006 mix" of "Be.Angeled" is absolutely brilliant. It captures the essence of the original version in true Jam & Spoon style. If you have never purchased any of their albums or singles, then this is the BEST collection of their work to have; a duo that had a defining influence in dance music in the 90's.

Customer Reviews:
Looking for an intro to trance? This is your ticket........2007-07-10
I missed out on much of the 90s electronic music scene, especially the club aspect. Recently I decided to dig back in time to discover some great tracks. This was the third 'overview' compiliation I bought to begin familiarizing myself with trance music, and unlike the first two, this one did not disappoint.
Truth in Advertising and CD Title - These are Classics.......2006-01-15
If you've been listening and dancing to Trance for 10 years, these tracks you should already own or have moved on from but for newcomers or those who want to grab some of the classics - these are truely the trance classics.
In Dance particularly, there are lots of labels that grab a couple tracks a few years old and label them 'classics' but these really are.
So if you're looking to add some Trance tracks to a late night party CD mix - these are all great. Keep in mind that if you're inviting Trance/rave fans, they might sneer at how 'uncool' these tracks are - as they're more than 5 years old - of course, they'll sneer at anything that's not a promo only white label 12" single and you don't want them at your party anyway :-)
Just kidding. These are great tracks and they are classics AND they have stood the test of time - drop and of these tracks down and the dnace floor will fill up!
Just You Average "Classics".......2004-03-09
The vast majority of tracks on this two-disc collection are quite forgettable. That's not necessarily bad though (unless you're naive enough to expect an album with the name "Classics" in its title to actually be what it claims to be). Although there is nothing standout about them, this collection of tracks is perfect as background music to exercise to, listen to while working on the computer, etc. The first disc is much more consistent than the second in its mediocre-elevator-music-of-the-post-Y2K-era styling. Most of the songs on the second disc simply don't flow with one another very well; however, there are a couple of exceptions that out-distance the pack, "Saltwater" by Chicane and "1998" by Binary Finary are both very interesting tunes. All in all, this album is not bad, but nothing more than average either.
Well rounded album.......2004-02-21
interesting a collection of some of the better trance songs. When i first looked at this CD, I didn't know of some of the songs, but after listening to it i was pleasantly surprished. The songs are somewhat long, 6, 7 minutes long and IS contiunally mixed. Most of the songs have a fairly long intro, building up, whatever you call it to lead into the "hook", then it on some of the songs it repeats the the hook again, thats why the songs can get so long.
The frist CD has some good stuff. I mainly listen to it for Cafe Del Mer, just a beautiful song (with a 2 and half minute long intro) and Gouryella, cuz all their whole four tracks they have ever put out is genius. Oh and sandstorm's on it, im sure most of you peeps have heard it, but this remix isn't bad, worth a listen. Didn't really like this version of ATB's 9pm, but its still better than the songs after it on disc 1. thought they sounded very similiar, got the female vocals going on some of them, i just couldn't get into the other tracks at the end of disc 1.
Disc 2 is in my opinion the better of the two. especially the end tracks. Like "1998', "Feel the beat', and "anomaly calling your name". This version of Binary Fusion "1998" is one of the better ones i heard, and trust me have heard a bunch of them, its a popular song. Just in general this album is worth the money to go get, its also worth the time to listen to.
Amongst the Best Trance Compilations Out There!.......2004-01-03
The name of these two CDs sum it all up: Trance Classics. They are indeed pure classic Trance songs. What I especially like about "Trance Classics" is that the cheesy vocal trance isn't used much. The songs are therefore just the pure masterpieces of the Trance world. Whoever put this compilation together has a very good taste for Trance music. You will find all the classics like "Sandstorm", "Children", "Zombie Nation", and many many many more solid hits. There is hardly a song that I will skip. It's all continuously mixed too which is great if you are trying to throw your own Trance party and need to keep the crowd jumpin. This CD is an ABSOLUTE must in any trance collection. I own many many Trance Compilations and this one is by far one of the best out there. You can't go wrong with this one.

Customer Reviews:
dull song selection, awful sound quality.......2005-06-28
The first track is basically a cappella and annoying, with the screams and shouts of a club crowd in the background...screams which continue throughout the ENTIRE disc. The accapella vocal carries into the second track, a soft house tune. Ultra Nate's Free kicks in next. In terms of the quality of this disc, it sounds like they put mikes in front of each of the speakers in the club and recorded live. It has a "warehouse" feel to it, especially with the constant shouts of dancers in the background. This is not something I want to hear on my home stereo system. I want clear, well-mastered music. On CD1, the tracks are rather raucous and non-melodic, and we're not even treated to much in the way of Jonathan Peters exclusive remixes. Lift Me Up really begins the party, and is a slammin' way to segue into Corrupt, the most incredible track on this disc-a real diva vocal anthem, that doesn't skimp on the minute count. This followed by a 50 second a cappella Bob Marley vocal. Mother Earth is a moody female vocal track, and disc one finishes off with Hani's classic mix of Delacy.
Disc 2 starts off strong with Flower Duet in a long version-but of course, those ridiculous crowd shouts continue. A streak of vocal tracks, mostly with a trance feel-but a really boring trance feel, not NRG trance, follows. They were all big hits at the time, but they're sounding dated at this point. The second half of the disc manages to squeak out more power and energy than the first.
Despite a couple of standout tracks on this entire compilation, the "live at the club" feel of this disc just makes it sound like a really bad bootleg. Track times:
CD1:
1. roses for JP (3:18)
2. Flowerz (9:10)
3. Free (6:57)
4. U don't know me (8:00)

10. corrupt (8:30)
11. The sun is shining (:50)
12. mother earth (6:42)
13. that look (11:22)
CD2
1. flower duet (12:00)
2. I know you love me too (9:17)
3. everytime (7:12)
4. Rain (11:12)

Beyond Amazing.......2003-08-30
Jonathan Peters is in one word, a GOD. There is not much else I can say when I hear and see this cd/dvd set. If only he was recognized on a large scale outside of Manhattan, NY...he is easily one of the best DJ's of our time.
This cd/dvd set brings the heart of the legendary Sound Factory NYC to your home and then some. Something here for those older and younger, classics that will definitely appeal to the old school clubber but still be recognized by the new schoolers. Most of these classics span a range of time from 1996 to 2001, Jonathan Peters did a good job compiling this mix. The undeniably amazing track "Free" by Ultra Nate to the highly kinetic and progressive "Bailamos" by M3 (Matt Darey Mix) show Peters understanding of not only hard new york house music but his love for music as a whole.
The most recognizable tracks on this set will more than likely be, "I Know You Love Me Too" by Chris Raven, "Everytime" by Lustral (Original Nalin & Kane Remix)...two tracks Paul Oakenfold has played a lot in the past. Plus the legendary Tiesto mix of Sarah McLachlan's "Silence", originally mixed by Delerium. And that brings us to the very popular "Not Over Yet" by Grace, a great song, circa 1999.
The first cd is pretty much filled with Sound Factory classics that Factory patrons will recognize straight off but will definitely over please anyone that loves house music. You can't help but get up and yell in excitement when Jonathan performs one of the most unforgettable build ups ever on "Lift Me Up", it just rocks the room. If you are a fan of the house/trance "build up", then you must get this set just for that track, it's that great.
The second cd is a little lighter but still amazing. Jonathan switches out of his hard ny house mode and moves into more progressive and trancy hits. And the one gripe I have about the set is on the second cd. Towards the end of the set he stops mixing the tracks together with the usual expertise he does so well. Other than that there are just no other complaints I can register, this is a 99% perfect set, something you can't find that much these days.
The dvd is also amazing and easily the best Sound Factory has put out so far. For those that don't go to Factory or haven't experienced a real New York underground house club, it gives you a very good glimpse at what Factory faithful get to experience every weekend. It shows the clubs progression throughout the night and day, starting at 3am and ending at 9pm (SF starts up at 11pm on Sat and goes 'till Monday morning many times). It will also bring a smile to the Factory fans face and prepare you for your next Sunday!
Wild, crazy, sexy and high in energy, Sound Factory simply can't be touched, even with the current state of Manhattan nightlife (soon to be hopefully solved by the Fall opening of Spirit (at Twilo), Crobar and Avalon (at Limelight). Together with the insanely wonderful Jonathan Peters, SF will be here for a long time to come and will always be a place where other clubs around the world look to emulate.
Thank you Jonathan, Richard Grant, the whole Factory Staff and Family, you did an excellent job, now "Do it again".

Customer Reviews:
It's alright.......2005-06-25
I was not thrilled with the $20.00 price, I don't think it's worth it. There were not many songs to my liking on here, but there are a few that I wanted to point out.
DJ Sammy- Boys Of Summer. I like the Green Court Mix that's on here.
DJ Jean-The Launch. This is a cool song with a good beat. The only thing I don't like about this song is when the beat stops.
ATB-Don't Stop. This one is very well mixed out of The Launch and into Meet Her At The Love Parade.
Da Hool- Meet Her At The Love Parade. Classic, really great remix.
Ian Van Dahl-Castles In The Sky. This song was on the first CD of house music I had ever gotten- Best Of House Vol. 1. I never liked this song, but I eventually started to appreciate this particular mix of it.
Mike Koglin-The Silence. Same thing as Castles In The Sky, I've known about it for a long time but not liked it. It took me a bit to appreciate this one as well.
Art Of Trance-Madagascar. This is a Ferry Corsten mix. Did he mix this CD? This song is mixed into the next one, which happens to be by System F (Ferry Corsten), and then there's another Ferry Corsten Song on the second disc (Punk). I think Carte Blanche is too, but I'm not sure.
System F- Dance Valley Theme. My favorite song on the whole disc set. I just couldn't get enough of it for the first few days I had this CD.
Sasha-Wavy Gravy. I have absolutely no idea how this song is considered trance. Not that it's bad or anything like that, but it barely has any beat! Not my idea of house/trance.
Gouryella-Walhalla. This is long and got pretty annoying when I listened to it. It doesn't really have what the other songs have.
Dario G-Sunchyme. This mix of it is really great, but it doesn't sound much like the original Sunchyme. That doesn't change anything, it's still cool.
And the rest... Some were good, some were bad. A little bit above average for me overall.
gah!.......2005-05-27
i feel like i was robbed of the joy of this cd.
i already have THE BEST OF TRANCE series.
and this has many of the same songs. and soo..
i guess i wasn't OVERJOYED my the music.
the one song that REALLY REALLY stood out to me.
was don't give it up (chicane ft. bryan adams)
i repeat this song ever so much. it's hot.
good CD though.. good variety of music.
Pretty Nice Compilation.......2004-03-16
Here's the follow up to volume one of the Trance Classics series. Once again it's on a two disc set. Just like in volume one, great selection of songs here. A lot of memories brought back to me with this compilation.
Disc one includes songs like DJ Sammy's "Boys Of Summer." Just like his other hit "Heaven," this single became good enough to make US radio. There's also DJ Jean's "The Launch." I used to enjoy this song a lot. I would play it everyday and say the countdown (Five, Four, Three, Two......, One, Zero, Ignition). Ian Van Dahl's in here with "Castles In The Sky." This song also made US radio. I was beginning to forget about that song. It's been two years since I last heard it. I also like "Everytime" by Lustral. It was a nice song for some reason. I don't know why. It must be because of the vocals. Those are beautiful vocals. There's also "Wavy Gravy" by Sasha, "The Dance Valley Theme" by System F, "Don't Stop" by German DJ Andre Tanneberger, a.k.a. ATB ("It's the real sound"). "Meet Her At The Love Parade" by Da Hool and more.
Disc two's got Veracocha's "Carte Blanche." "Carte Blanche" would always play during 1999-2000. Indeed a classic. It was produced by the diddly Dutch master himself, Ferry Corsten who did the song "Punk" which is on here. "Punk" was my favorite song of 2003. I'd always chant the melody and say "digital punk" a number of times. Even though the song's still kind of new, it's still a classic. It was an instant classic. Another song on here is Gouryella's "Walhalla." I haven't heard this song for a while. Walhalla is actually the name of the heaven for norse gods. It was something like that. Did you know that? And there's Dario G's "Sunchyme." This song has samples of Dream Academy's "Life In A Northern Town." I liked this song for some reason and I don't know why. Plus there's "Toca's Miracle" by Fragma, "Touch Me" by Rui Da Silva, "Ubik" by Timo Maas, "The Theme" by Jurgen Vries, and more.
It's still a nice collection of trance songs, but the problem is that the songs run slower than their normal speed. That's why I kind of knocked a star off. Everything else is alright. I still hope to see more good trance from these guys.
Awesome CD Set.......2004-02-25
This CD Collection of Trance Classics Collection Series is Just Awesome Better Than The 1st CD Set.
Anyone who is a Fan of Trance, should get this Collection
come now dont be a cheap skate, buy this CD
dont download it, or copy it from your friend, buy this cd
you will get your moneys worth, i know i did
