Lots of bands use the formula--dance beats, dark atmospheres, velvety female vocals--but not many do it better than La Floa Maldita, goth's best-kept secret until the release of Destination: Heaven. Compiling tracks from the band's previous import-only discs--The Concealed Spell, Dedication! Separation!, and two EPs--this album distills what made them so appealing: Guido leFric's uncluttered compositional style, emphasizing melody but not at the expense of texture, and Rhea's exotic, lilting French vocals. Surface comparisons could be made to Delerium's later work or perhaps to Patricia Nigiani's Aurora project, but LFM's work is neither as dance-oriented as the former nor as bombastic as the latter. Standout tracks include the wistful yet poppy "Sorcière" and the seductively sleek "L'Oasis," represented in their original forms and in tricked-out remixes by industrial-dance stalwarts Haujobb and Das Ich. Great electronic music that deserves a wider audience. --Steve Landau

I was in class one day listening to Winamp radio and they played La Floa Maldita's "Imagination". It started off ok, but by the end of the song I was completely drawn in. The luscious female vocals really stuck out in my mind. The music was good, didnt necessarily stand on its own, but was a perfect compliment to the vocal delivery.

Then I saw this selling used for under $8 at the late great if-you-want-anything-remotely-resembling-industrial-you-can-find-it-here-thanks-to-Bill indie music store East Alley Records. I picked it up on the basis of "Imagination". After listening to the entire album I was still quite impressed. Its an eclectic mix of semi-dance, electronic, and goth numbers that flow together well enough to enjoy as a whole but not enough to get lost on which track youre on. The programming is good; as the moods created are eerie but calm and surreal, but I really like the vocalist, Rhea, who really carries the songs when its her time to shine.

My favorite song has now become the second track "Sociere". It is truly magical and is at least twice as better as the awesome "Imagination". Its catchy but not enough to sound poppy, and just swarms around you and mesmerizes you in its existence. And apparently all of these songs are from various import releases unavailable in the States until now, so its kind of a nice little early sampling of this band. I need to check out the new 2 disc album "Salut Jacques" out on Wax Trax 2. Hopefully it will be as pleasing as this has been.

La Floa Maldita sound very much like Delerium, minus the new age sound. In a sea of ethereal female vocal/electronic projects, they are one of the best groups I've heard. They show a nice range of song styles, from slow and haunting to fast and poppy. Some of their songs are also in French, which is a nice change from other groups. The only thing I don't care for is the singer's voice: while she sounds sweet and clear, her voice isn't particularly strong or distinctive. Other than that, this is a very good band worth checking out if you're into Delerium-type music!
