Debut single for UK dance duo Musique features their unique take on U2's classic hit 'New Year's Day', which impressed the Irish rocker's so much they approved it. The pair is made up of Nick Hanson & Moussa Clarke (aka Moose), who produced the track & is best known for the infamous slamming hard house track 'Choose Life', which sampled Ewan McGregor's opening speech from the cult film Trainspotting, & for his massive UK radio hit remix of Tzant's 'Sounds Of The Wickedness'. The Edge's famous guitar line from 'New Year's Day' is sampled here with Barney C.'s vocals layered over it & Musique's hooky beats. This import disc contains three mixes of the cut, the shortest of which is eight minutes plus & the longest clocking in at over 11 minutes! An excellent companion to Uakti and Philip Glass's wonderful Aguas de Amazonia, U.K. trio Tuu's One Thousand Years is a densely textured ambient homage to primitive magical woodlands, tribal peoples, and sacred waters. The group features not just the expected synthesizer and samples but flutes, panpipes, clay-pot drums, bowl gongs, and a chiming array of percussion. Creating nearly an hour of luscious soundscape at once both ancient and modern, Tuu seem to find influences ranging from Ravi Shankar to Tuvan throat singing and pygmy song; taking cues too, from Tibetan chant and ceremony and the inherent music of old-growth forests visited by wind and rain. Beginning with the haunting dissonance of "Exile," an interplay of sound and silence, drone and tinkling bell, One Thousand Years plays as a mystic song cycle, quite likely to find an audience beyond listeners already won over to music classified as New Age. --Paige La Grone

Naturally, music resonates differently on an emotional level for each listener, but I found myself coming back to this highly evocative recording over and over again. Particular voices and instrumentations invite specific associations at times, but the pervading mood suggests exotic atmospheres, imaginary journeys and unfamiliar horizons at sunset. If you liked Mesh, you might enjoy the greater subtlety and languid pacing of One Thousand Years.

I was so excited about getting this cd. My hopes were distroyed upon first play. It is monotone, repetitive, and boring. In fact it is very annoying. I've tried to play it a few more times, with hopes of changing my mind, but this one is going in the to sell or give away rack.

Happily reissued by Waveform, this was an excellent early to mid 90's ambient work. Its slow pace, and atmospheric mix of synths and folk instrumentation, evoke a more human past in which dreaming and spiritual speculation were stronger than any mass media or cultural technology ... heck, way back when, myths and folklore WERE the mass media. The technology ... was spoken history, and musical expression. Not quite slow and serene enough for yoga or other meditation, but a suitable soundtrack to your own afternoon of quiet melancholy for a hidden past. On the [Scary (1) -> Angelic (10)] scale of ambient works, I'd position this at 6. Followed by ALL OUR ANCESTORS, also on Waveform, also highly recommended as a companion CD.

I was a little disapointed when I discovered the Nick Parkin was not on the CD, but, its very good although he is not present. In fact, Iam most certainly impressed. A very relaxing and trance producing CD, that maintains interest all the way through. One of the better purchases for me this year. I was playing it so much I was afraid I was going to burn myself out, so I put it away for a couple of weeks..highly recomended

Whoever described this as deep, ancient atmospheres is on the money. It takes you to remote amazon junglescapes, back to your sofa and everywhere inbetween. BRAVO! A superb effort!

Yes--that opening guitar (is that guitar? what other instrument could it be? PLEASE email me if you know for sure!)melody is the centerpiece of the mix, as it was of the original song, in my view. With that said, im a huge fan of this mix, because i love the tempo, sound, and composition of that guitar solo!
The rest of the remixes are all wonderful, and some add in more party-flavored soundbites, which don't really gel with the song, but definitely with the vibe of the song.

The one disappointment is that the mixes doesn't contain any samples or enhancements of Bono's wonderful, emotional vocals.
They could've really pronounced them musically as they did with the guitar solo melody of the song.

Now this US edition of the single seems to contain less remix tracks than the UK edition...and you definitely wanna hear all mixes possible of this memorable, sentimental, MOVING song.
And again, the guitar solo is the isolated, replayed part of the song, the rest of the original song is disregarded...so that's what you'll be delivered when you listen for the first time.

This is a great cd wonderful dance sound with a old u2 sound on it. it's not often you see u2 let their work be put into a very dancy club mix but it was done with good taste. must have for a u2 fan and a dance music fan.
