5 out of 5 stars Striking, poignant, moving music with indelible overtones.......2005-05-25

Playing Time - 61:12 -- If you truly believe in your music and you're going to produce a CD, why not make it as high class a production as you can afford? That seems to be Rise's much-appreciated approach. This enhanced CD includes 14 tracks, over an hour's worth of splendid music, and a 32-page CD booklet with all lyrics and background notes about the songs. Why can't more artists and labels do the same?

Rise hails from the beautiful Island of Bute, off Scotland's west coast. Their alternative folk or Celtic folk rock music is building them a legion of fans. Their last album, "Uncertain Wonders," gave us a tightly crafted, innovative mix of traditional and contemporary songs mixed with haunting vocals and striking guitars, keyboards, bass and drums. Although Elaine McCombe still appears live with Rise, she doesn't contribute on this album which features vocalist Debbie Dawson, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Gerry Geoghegan, and percussionist/keyboardist Kris Manvell. Besides being an excellent songwriter, Gerry plays guitars, bass, keyboards, bodhran, whistles, mandolin, banjo, and bouzouki.

Dawson's magnetic voice is a large part of Rise's signature sound. Haunting contemporary Celtic accompaniment and vocal harmonies are another. With one foot in tradition, they also keep one headed in the direction of the future. The band is made up of innovative and forward thinkers who demonstrate a playful spirit. With the exception of three tracks, the music is original. "Green Grow the Rashes-o" comes from Scotland's national bard, Rabbie Burns, and is given an eerie and mysterious treatment. Another favorite among Celtic music aficionados, "Both Sides the Tweed" comes from the pens of James Hogg and Dick Gaughan. Rise also covers Nanci Griffith's "Love at the Five and Dime." The band's mixture of the familiar with their own creative artistry is commendable.

Of the album's originals, a couple clearly show how the band also incorporates both Scottish and American music into their creative process. "Don't Stop the World" reinforces the fact that no one is perfect. "Woe to Live On" is an interesting ballad inspired by a movie called "Ride with the Devil." "The Gallows," sung as a duet, has a powerful message of struggle, hardship, bravery, perseverance and love. Like a sequel to a movie, one might want to listen to Rise's first album "Uncertain Wonders" before picking up "Posing as Human." While not intentional, certain songs ("I Will Love You Always") continue the themes and stories from their first project. "Get Away" and "Fading Fast" provide some different perspectives about certain kinds of relationships. The title cut, "Posing as Human," reinforces the importance of one's kindness, love, compassion and benevolence to one another. I don't know about you, but I like an album to leave me with an uplifting note of optimism. "Trust Me" gives us some advice for getting through troubled times.

The sophomore release from Rise is another triumph. "Posing as Human" gives us striking music with indelible overtones. Their poignant presentation is truly moving. More about Rise is at http://www.riseband.co.uk (Joe Ross, Roseburg, OR.)

5 out of 5 stars A good mix.......2005-01-20

First off, I didn't buy this CD. I won it from CelticRadio.net, a message board for people who love traditional and non-traditional Scottish, Irish and Celtic music. They also have a streaming audio station.

This CD has been in my rotation since I received it. It is a good mix of folk and pop sound. One of the songs is actually a poem by Robert Burns, "Green Grow The Rashes-O" that the trio of Debbie Dawson (vocals), Gerry Geogheghan (guitars, vocals, bass, keyboard, mandolin, banjo), and Kris Manvell (percussion) put to music.

All the songs are good, but here are my favorite tracks:

"Don't Stop The World"
"The Gallows"
"Love At The Five & Dime"
"I Will Love You Always"
"The Way Things Are"
"Green Grow The Rashes-O"

5 out of 5 stars One of the best producer in the world, by far........2001-07-07

This Is one of the most well produced albums that has ever been made, apart from the music all being of outstanding quality, the production blows me away. You'll be hard pressed to find a louder album and there is not a trace of distortion. All the sounds are perfect. Mirwais has been around for a long time under different names, in different bands, playing different styles of music. Many well respected artists have listed him as one of their major influences(Even Daft Punk-this would be why "he sounds to much like Daft Punk"....yeah.) You would have to hate music not to enjoy this album on some level. Expand you mind(and musical taste) and get this album.

4 out of 5 stars definitely modern.......2001-01-22

I can't quite make up my mind about this CD. The first two tracks "Disco Science" and "Naive Song" are very modern tracks that will inevitably become quite cult. The tune is great and it really gives off some exciting vibes. However, one can't help but notice a vague similarity to Daft Punk, especially Disco Science. The other tracks are not bad, but slightly sub-standard when considering the first two. "Paradise (Not for Me)" which features Madonna is by all means a cool track but don't expect anything like Madonna's previous efforts (NB: This track is also on Madonna's "Music"). All in all, it's easy to get excited about this CD, because all of the tracks are fairly novel, but you'll end up listening to just three of them (exceptional)

4 out of 5 stars possibly.........2000-09-12

I would have given this album 5 stars but it only had 9 tracks on it. Which was pretty upsetting because the music on it is pretty good. Does anyone else think the beat in "Never Young Again" was sampled in Madonna's track "Music" along with that one other sound.. If you have heard both songs you will know what sound i'm talking about..

5 out of 5 stars Madonna knows good music when she hears it.......2000-09-07

Mirwais' Production is one of the best electronica albums I've ever heard. Although I liked William Orbit's production on Ray of Light, I have to say that Mirwais has given Orbit a run for his money. Why else would he be producing four tracks on her new album? Mirwais' Disco Science and Paradise(Not for Me) are probably the best reasons to buy the album, but all the other tracks are excellent. Madonna's new album is going to be hot thanks to Mirwais.

4 out of 5 stars "Paradise (Not For Me)" makes this a classic "Production".......2000-08-01

I ordered this import because I'd been hearing a lot recently about Mirwais and his collaboration with Madonna on her upcoming album. I'm also a huge fan of her new single "Music" which was co-produced with Mirwais. I was also curious to hear track #7 "Paradise (Not For Me) which features Madonna. "Paradise" is a stunning track: haunting, delicate, and beautiful. Madonna has never sounded quite so fragile and the orchestral accompaniment shimmers. One of the things that is so exciting about Madonna - and one reason why she has managed to stay at the forefront of 'pop' music culture - is her ability to mold her sound to a wide range of musical styles. Each album has a different sound yet manages to retain that distinct Madonna quality. "Paradise (Not For Me)" will not be for everyone ... it does take some getting used to, especially when one reflects back upon the music she was producing just ten years ago. Based on her work here with Mirwais, I have high expectations (and maybe a little bit of trepidation) about her new album due out in September ... not trepidation regarding its quality, but that it won't find a popular audience. We'll see...

But enough about Madonna. Mirwais' "Production" is a solid effort in its own right: edgy, kind of trashy, but a lot of fun, the kind of album that makes you want to get up and dance. The opening track "Disco Science" is already an international club hit. "Naive Song" and "I Can't Wait" are also great tracks. But again, for me, it's the collaboration with Madonna that make this album such a worthwhile investment
