If you believe everything written about electronica, you'd think it traced its ancestry directly to Kraftwerk. But there was a time during the latter half of the '70s when another branch grew from the tree--electronic pop music. Think Gary Numan, Yazoo, and the wondrous M, whose "Pop Muzik" was--and still is--a sublime single. Komputer, at least, haven't forgotten those halcyon days. In fact, they're the basis of this entire album which wears pop music unashamedly on its sleeve, mixing it at times with the instrumental romanticism of Orbital ("Looking Down on London"), and nods toward other movements, present and past, in the genre. But mostly, this is about some songs, glorious like "Valentina" or downright silly (like "Bill Gates"). The World of Tomorrow is more like yesterday's world today, but still thoroughly entertaining. --Chris Nickson

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Uneven but Still and All Great.......2007-07-04

I like Mame and Hello Dolly some, but frankly they always annoyed me by straining too much for lively and enthusiastic. This one is much more in keeping with my taste. It is mostly a gentler and more subdued show, with a lot of very good music. The title song and One Person are too much in Herman's rousing and stirring mode, and very much out of place with the rest of the score. That rest of the score is a wow, though.

The sardonic opening Spring of Next Year has a gorgeous melody but the lyrics are a sly parody and indictment of the big business ethic, a very French attitude. The contrast between melody and lyrics is exquisite. The Tea Party builds and builds until it ends in a hilarious babble of triple counterpoint harmony. The ballads Kiss Her Now, I've Never Said I Love You, and I Was Beautiful are gorgeous and express genuine emotion. Each Tomorrow Morning finds Herman in a gentler inspirational mode that works much better in this context than the two more standard Herman blasts. Even the song called Garbage is anything but. The performances are uniformly superb.

By the accounts I've read, Dear World flopped because an oversized production warred with the basically intimate nature of the show. Not too long ago, I had the pleasure of seeing a rare staging by a regional theter in Washington. It was a deliberately small production and to paraphrase the show, it was beautiful. In any case, of all Herman's scores, I think I like this one best, though Mack and Mabel is close. And Milk and Honey and La Cage have a lot to recommend them as well. Buy this one - you won't regret it.

4 out of 5 stars Dear, Dear..........2007-06-21

There is much that is lovely, even gorgeous, in Herman's score, but for every "I Don't Want to Know" or "I've Never Said I Love You" or even "Garbage" (a deliciously garish tango), there's a "One Person" or the title number that sound like they belong in another show (probably Hello Dolly or Mame).

As the liner notes to the CD and others here have said, Dear World was an uneasy amalgam of a gentle fantasy requiring a light touch and a raucous Broadway "big lady" show. I'd say 80% of the score works: in addition to the above-mentioned songs, there's the soaring opening "The Spring of Next Year", Lansbury's dramatic "Kiss Her Now", her blithe "And I Was Beautiful" and the gorgeous cacophony of "The Tea Party."

Interestingly, if you get the perusal score for the show, there's a new song (a solo for Countess Aurelia) entitled "At the Bottom of the Glass" which sounds more in keeping with the tone than "Each Tomorrow Morning."

However, all quibbles aside, Dear World does bear repeated listening. For those who think Herman is merely frivolous anonymous showtunes, this show disputes that.

5 out of 5 stars Herman's best!.......2006-09-20

I don't typically belong to the Jerry Herman fan base, but this score of his is awesome. I am familiar with Hello, Dolly, Mame, Mack And Mabel and La Cage Aux Folles, but this is the only Herman score I find enjoyable throughout. Having the glorious Angela Lansbury singing the bittersweet songs is also wonderful. As this show is one of the celebrated, legendary flops of Broadway history, I assume the book of the show has to take the blame. The score is first rate. Take this from a dedicated Sondheimite;)

5 out of 5 stars Thank you Amazon reviewers.......2006-07-25

I bought this because of the positive user reviews and couldn't be more thankful that I did. I'm not an expert on the musical form so I can't really speak to the strengths and weaknesses of the book nor the coherence of musical styles of the songs, but I can say with conviction that Angela Lansbury is unbelievably good on this recording. It's difficult for me to convey just how good she is, but I urge anyone whose curiosity is peaked by these reviews to break down and buy the CD. Lansbury's performance alone is worth the price of admission. Her voice is warm, comic, heartbreaking and uplifting. Just beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars MY SECOND ALEXANDER H COHEN PRODUCTION.......2006-06-15

This still is my favorite play, i was young but i do remember how delightfully charming and funny this tale was. The scenic design still lingers, but this score will forever be etched in my mind. Dear World, And I was Beautiful, Kiss Her Now, Each Tomorrow Morning to name just a few classics by Jerry Herman a pro and way ahead of the time...when theatre was still theatre.

Album Description

Téada (Pronounced tay-da, meaning "strings" in Irish) has been called "one of the most exciting traditional groups to emerge in recent years" (Irish World). The Irish quintet was voted "Best Traditional Newcomers" in Irish Music Magazine, and have released two highly-regarded albums on Green Linnet. "A new and fresh face in Irish music, Téada is a band to watch out for," says The Irish Voice.

On Inné Amárach (or `Yesterday Tomorrow') Téada juxtaposes musical material from as far back as the 18th century, with interpretations of diverse traditional tunes of modern origin, Téada reflects a deep cultural fascination with the interaction of past and present. Accompanied by a DVD documentary providing a snapshot of the group's musical influences, Inné Amárach or `Yesterday Tomorrow' is a vivid melodic and rhythmic exploration by a traditional group engaging with a global audience.

Package includes a bonus DVD featuring live performance footage of Téada and documentary of the rich musical culture of Ireland's Sligo region.

5 out of 5 stars If you like trad Irish, this CD and DVD is a must have!.......2007-03-04

This music CD and DVD combination is a great purchase for TRADITIONAL Irish folk music fans. Please understand that there is traditional Irish music played with more ornamentation and percussion, so we are talking about a less ornamented style of playing more typical of small groups involved in music sessions in pubs throughout Ireland, and of those sessions through the last couple of decades. The music CD is a tour of the length and breadth of this music and different rhythms. The DVD is a showpiece for County Sligo, including beautiful green scenery, the elder Sligo musicians being interviewed, pub sessions and studio work. That is alot of Ireland for the price of the purchase! Best viewed with a pint (or more) of Guinness.

This is a young band, and I am eagerly awaiting any future albums and/or DVD's. Their DVD is an especially valuable addition to my collection that includes Dervish at Johnny Fox's, Midsummer's Night Session (Dervish), One Night Stand (Danu), Water from the Well (Chieftains), Solas (Solas Concert), and Gael Force (Various Musicians).

5 out of 5 stars Best Irish trad album of 2006.......2007-01-29

I have to agree with an earlier review posted here: best Irish trad of 2006. A few years back, from their first two albums, Danú led the pack before they shifted with a new vocalist (see my review on Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh's solo debut) into more of a Sandy Denny/ Fairport blend of folk, trad, and light rock. Fifteen years ago, Altan. Twenty-five, Bothy Band. Thirty, Planxty.

This package offers eleven traditional tunes and a DVD feature that places the band within their influences, interviewing not only the musicians in Téada but their mentors in Sligo. Fittingly, this third album by this innovative quintet places Téada in the front ranks of younger Irish traditional groups. They delve deeply into the albums they have and the sessions they attend for selections from primarily Sligo and Clare. They merge these two traditions, usually kept apart by most musicians on their records, and this matches the make-up of the band: two Sligomen, a Dubliner, and one each from Laois and Monaghan. Guitar, flute, button accordion, fiddle, piano, and bodhrán work together.

The DVD shares this cooperative spirit, as fans of the band, local veterans of the music scene, and the band all contribute their appreciation of traditional music. The results here are not stodgy, however. The youth of the band ensures that the tunes are played with the proper balance of respect and rearrangement. All instrumental, the concentration of their energy bodes well. Given the decline in intensity by their somewhat older peers as shown on recent recordings by Lúnasa and Áltan, Téada continues to hone a sound that avoids concessions to synthetic production or diminished purity; this makes "Inné Amárach" a perfect title. Blending "yesterday" with "tomorrow," the audio with the video, studio talent with pub spontaneity, this handsomely designed CD-DVD set fulfills the promise of their first two solid records. It probably surpasses it; the confidence here should fuel more such albums by the five lads for many years to come. (Last 2 paragraphs from my review on rootsworld.com)

5 out of 5 stars The sound of the Irish "session" - perfected.......2006-11-10

Just hearing this CD brought back memories of great sessions in Ireland over the last 20 years. The difference is that the musicians here lift the "session" to a level of perfection that is a pleasure to listen to beyond the ordinary. Sweetly distinct instruments blend into a fusion that evokes those meetings of talented musicians (usually in pubs!) that one was rarely privileged to stumble into on the byways and highways of Ireland. Listening to this CD is like having your own top class session on hand when you need it! The changing balance of instruments on each track keeps the listener captivated.

5 out of 5 stars Best trad album of 2006.......2006-10-30

It's been a couple of years since Téada's last album, but man! was it worth the wait! This is a fantastic album of traditional music, in my opinion clearly the best traditional album of the year. It includes examples of many different types of tunes--you don't just get jigs and reels on this, no sir, you get planxties, marches, polkas, and even a "descriptive piece," "Nóra Críona," which is beautifully done, by the way. It is really seldom a traditional CD presents one with such a range of types of tunes, and seldom that such interesting tunes as these are included. For my part, my absolute favorite track on the whole album is the one that includes "The Shelf," a polka that Damien Stenson learned from Harry Bradley, though the track including the march "Jamesy Gannon's" is also wonderful (three members of Téada are also part of a ceili band which played this march as one of their selections in the Fleadh Cheoil competition). Each of the instruments gets a chance to shine on the various tracks, and from beginning to end this is a resolutely exciting album that shows off the tremendous talent of one of the finest traditional-style bands ever to come out of Ireland. What's even better is that, in addition to the wonderful music, there is a DVD containing a short documentary that addresses the musical influences of the band, which mostly consist of the musical traditions of North Connacht. There are interviews here with each of the band members, as well as the great fiddle/flute player Peter Horan, Verona Ryan, and Paddy Ryan, as well as stunning scenery from the Sligo region. If you love Irish music, you MUST HAVE this CD!

5 out of 5 stars Traditional Christmas Music .......2007-01-24

If you love traditional Christmas music, done in traditional style (i.e., no rock or jazz influence), this CD is for you. The Robert Shaw Chorale, the "gold standard" of quality choral music, sings much loved carols, with some lesser-known pieces as well. Some are a cappella; some include a full orchestral accompaniment. My favorites on this CD are "We Three Kings," "Bring a Torch, Jeannette Isabella," and "I Saw Three Ships."

5 out of 5 stars The quintessential Christmas recording.......2005-12-09

This recording seems to elicit universal and heartfelt praise. Who am I to dispute that? The performance is terrific, just as described by the other Amazon reviewers, no doubt about it.

However, I do have one bone to pick with this recording. There just isn't enough of it. With material as good as this, that is a real loss!

5 out of 5 stars A Top List Christmas CD.......2004-12-28

I bought this cd long ago, and have enjoyed it immensely each year. It is the perfect blend of celebration and meditation. Orchestra and choir combine in four distinct groupings, and a capella arrangements complete the masterful collection. The orchestral arrangements will make the hairs on your neck stand up, and your stomach quiver with all the excitement you ever felt as a child at Christmas. Adeste Fidelis is performed as few other ensembles have ever come close. The a capella arrangements will all, without exception, be on your yearly list of must-hear holiday arrangements. Truly a top list Christmas CD, essential for every family who celebrates this feast.

5 out of 5 stars The best.......2004-01-02

I own approximately 35 Christmas choral CDs - including choirs and groups such as the Cambridge Singers and the King Singers. I also own two Christmas albums with Robert Shaw and the Atlantic symphony. This performance with the Robert Shaw Chorale is old but it is still my favorite. The arrangements are magnificent, the sound is brilliant, and the choir and orchestra are precise with wonderful volume control. Buy and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars How do you describe perfection?.......2003-12-14

This is my favorite Christmas CD. Nothing comes close. I thoroughly enjoyed learning much of the music in high school choir over 30 years ago. The music has never left me. The four medleys are the arrangements of Robert Russell Bennett titled "The Many Moods of Christmas". The arrangements seem to have a freshness about them even after listening numerous times.

Interspersed with the medleys are a cappella carols.

All of this music is wonderfully performed by the Robert Shaw Chorale, the a cappella selections recorded in 1957 and the medleys in 1963.

Four decades have proven that this is the standard in choral music. The clarity of text, the richness of tone, the beauty of harmony combine to present the message of Christmas in the manner that only music can do.

These words are no surprise to those familiar with choral music in the United States. If you are not so familiar, but would like to enjoy Christmas music at its most beautiful, you can do no better than acquiring this CD.

Director Kerry Conran's retro-themed action adventure is imbued with a singular visual sense, an ambitious marriage of Indiana Jones' serial sensibilities and the neo-Deco sci-fi trappings of Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers. Young composer Edward Shearmur is charged with bringing that pulp-visionary, past-that-never-was to musical life, a task he accomplishes with expected orchestral verve. Its music that's as unabashedly derivative as the film's grab-bag of 1930s/40s influences, yet arranged and executed with a rich orchestral palate and an endlessly energetic dynamic sense. While he deftly avoids walking too closely in the familiar musical footsteps of John Williams---and there are admittedly no themes here as instantly memorable as Raiders of the Lost Ark's signature march---Shearmur manages a few smart new themes of his own, breathing compelling new life into one of filmdom's most cliched genres---and trumping previous similar back-to-the-future adventure scores like James Horner's The Rocketeer the bargain. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Derivitive?? So what!!.......2005-11-08

Many reviewers have praised Edward Shearmur's score for "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" in a somewhat backhanded way, referring to its being derivitive of the John Williams style. I find this comparison to be amusing because John Williams himself, in all of his movie scores, blatantly steals from many better composers than himself, such as Richard Wagner, Igor Stravinsky, Gustav Holst and Sir Edward Elgar, to name but the most obvious and most lawsuit-proof - that is - safely dead long enough for their music to have become public domain.

That being said, Williams is a superb orchestral craftsman and at least chooses the best from whom to steal. And in this score, I think Edward Shearmur has shown himself capable of giving Williams, the current reigning champion of the sci-fi/adventure/action film genre, a serious run for his money.

It would be fascinating to hear what a Danny Elfman might have done had he been tagged to pen this movie score, but I cannot see how Williams could have topped it. Most enjoyable.

3 out of 5 stars Visually: 5 stars. But seriously overextends itself........2005-10-30

An old adage says that everybody knows who Picasso is, but nobody knows who invented the paintbrush. Call this movie a demo for a really great new paintbrush.

This is one of those movies which expands the range of things that a movie can be--honestly I've never seen such a wonderful look in a film, retro and futuristic at the same time. After about a century of moviemaking, its a pretty good achievement to come up with a whole new look.

The basic problem with this movie is that it just tries too do too much, and achieves too little. It goes from the sublime to the rediculous when it goes from cool-robo-gizmo-gadgets to trying to be Jurrasic Park. Dinasauroids just don't belong here.

What would have worked much better is instead of trying to fit all of these adventures into one movie, they should have just introduced the great new look in a tight, fast-paced, 70-minute movie showing some Sky-Captain derring-do. They could have started a whole new film franchise: Sky captain goes underwater, sky captain goes to the island that time forgot, etc etc.

But noooooo...by packing all these different scenarios into one film, they seem to have exhausted all of Sky Captain's possibilities, to the point that he was boring by the end of the film. Instead of teasing us and leaving us wanting more, the whole sky-capitain thing seems been-their-done-that before it even got started.

Dumdumdumdum, dumduhduhduh, DUH, DUH, DUH...

Wow, this is a tremendous soundtrack. It is a great compliment to a great film. It conjures up comparisons to
Raiders of the Lost Ark, and is a rare cinematic treat. I highly reccomend it.

5 out of 5 stars A rare classic.......2005-05-29

Wow! There's been a lot of talk of comparisons between some up and coming composers and the likes of John Williams (Michael Giacchino, David Arnold) but I would have to say that on the basis of this superior soundtrack, Edward Shearmur could easily walk off with that mighty accolade - I would actually describe this soundtrack's flavour as a cross between Raiders Of The Lost Ark and Silvestri's The Mummy Returns, both classics.

Sky Captain's harmonies, orchestration and execution by the London Metropolitan Orchestra are first rate and have an intricacy that Mr Williams would be quite proud of I'm sure. Whether or not the orchestrations are the work of Shearmur himself or an experienced orchestrator I'm not entirely sure but that doesn't detract at all from Shearmur's obvious superior musical talents - the basics of the music here - and where a composer's talents really lie - namely the melodies, harmonies, developments, representation and musical complexity, are all so good that I only hope Shearmur can one day be given the right material and embark on a larger body of work, something to call his own Star Wars.

Sky Captain does sound a lot like vintage Williams and there are some rather engaging themes weaving their way throughout the cues. The main theme is perhaps not as memorable as one could have hoped for but it is certainly heroic enough, is nicely harmonised and in another sign of Shearmur's talent, is well developed so that it at times also suits a more romantic or sombre mood.

Sky Captain is really a non- stop action affair with a few light moments but the (now quite fashionable) powerful overblown trombones are never far away and when the choir is used (The Robot Army), it is awesome.

If I were to offer any criticisms, I would say that the rather beautiful romance theme is unfortunately underused and could have perhaps been adapted into some sort of bonus concert cue a la John Williams. Also, some of the cues do run seamlessly into one another and whereas on CD this is not a problem, my MP3 player inserts a little gap between them; so perhaps there could have been some reorganisation of the cues such as having one cue but two or three titles within that cue, again a la John Williams.

However, I have no real criticisms about the music and I would say not to listen to people who complain that it's all been done before. Sure, it's reminiscent of past classics but unlike other such soundtracks, Sky Captain stands right up there with them. In short, this is the most enjoyable soundtrack I've had the pleasure of listening to in a very long time and I look forward to following Shearmur's musical career with pleasure.

4 out of 5 stars Shearmur's "Sky Captain" a Pleasant Surprise.......2004-10-20

Esward Shearmur's score for Director Kerry Conran's "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" is a very pleasant surprise as is the film itself. Conran's rather unique production was very dependent upon a solid adventure (1930s-1940 serial redux)score and Shearmur came through with flying colors. Beginning with a main theme in the vein of John Williams' "Indiana Jones" theme that comes up as fast as a P-40 Warhawk in the main credits, Shearmur quickly moves to music that sets a darker tone in "The Zeppelin Arrives," and a clearly menacing tone for "The Robot Army." But easily the best part of this very good score emerges as the RAF aerial flying platforms appear out of the clouds. Here Shearmur gives us yet a new heroic theme for flight officer Frankie ("Finding Frankie" and "Manta Squadron"). It might be a stretch to say that this is Shearmur's most impressive work to date. But it is worthy of note. The film and the soundtrack recording are a good deal of fun. Nicely produced and packaged.

4 out of 5 stars Few Could Sing Neapolitan Songs like Lanza.......2007-03-13

Neapolitan music is very special and unique. It requires singing from the soul and heart and a voice that articulates the language and its many nuances

Mario Lanza was not Neapolitan but he mastered the dialect and the music and the lyrics in a way that few have been able to articulate. As always, Lanza gives a wonderful performance on this album which does not need or deserve the pieces from the Vagabond King.

The greatest voice of this century and the twentieth century comes out in this splendid work. Just having the Neapolitan songs sung by Mario is worth the cost. I recommend it highly for lovers of the best and brightest, like Lanza was.

4 out of 5 stars Canto Neapolitane.......2006-02-08

This was the last album Lanza recorded in which he was able to muster all his vocal splendor and create what remains perhaps the most passionately interpreted set of Neapolitan songs ever recorded by any tenor in history ( a close second being recordings by di Stefano, Corelli and Sergio Franchi).

Lanzas diction is uncannily Neapolitan, which is no mean feat considering that the Neapolitan dialect is all but impossile to duplicate by anyone not born and raised in the region. Even such greats as Corelli and del Monaco had problems with it and the much over-rated Pavarotti never even came close.
Lanza nailed it!

The song selection is great with the exception of Funicula...that song doesn't work no matter who sings it.
My personal favs are Dichitenchello Vuie, Voce la Notte, and Passione...Canta'p'me being a close second.
Lanzas gift for pouring his every emotion into his singing really comes forth on these songs. Moreso even than on any of his operatic selections which are peerless in their own right.
However; in my mind, Lanza always did his best work on the Neapolitan songs.

The songs from the soundtrack of the film "The Vagabond King" are about as lame as can be. They are right along the usual line of Hollywood junk which Lanza recorded too much of in his short career.
Thus the 4 star rating. I turn the CD off once the Neapolitan stuff is over with.

The only other major distraction here is not due to anything Mario could have controlled or done differently. It's in that that RCA decided to release this album in this then newly discovered "stereo surround" format, which was nothing more than overblown reverb effects. This worked well for a thin voiced Elvis, but it didn't fare to well with this type of material or Marios larger than life voice.

In the end, this is, and always will be a collection of the finest sung Neapolitan songs ever recorded.

Bravo Commendatore Lanza! Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT!!!!!.......2005-11-26

If your gong to get one Mario Lanza CD or CD Set get the Mario Lanza Collection, But if you want to get one more, get this one, Mario Lanza At His Best. This is one CD (not a set like the collection) which contain many beautiful Italian folk songs and then competes with the songs from Lanza's Movie, The vagabond king. Lanza sings wonderful renditions of Funiculi Funicula, Dicitencello Vuie (just beautiful), Maria Mari (my Grandmothers favorite song), Voce e' Notte, Canta pe' Me, O Surdato Namurato, Comme Facette Mammeta?, Santa Lucia Luntana, Fenesta Che Lucive, Ta Ca Nun Chiagne, 'Na Sera 'e Maggio, and Passione (Which is just beautiful. Then the CD moves to the songs form the vagabond King; Drinking Song, Some day, Love Me Tonight, only A Rose, Tomorrow, Nocturne, Song of the vagabonds and Finale all well done. Judy Rasking sings with Mario on Some day, Only A Rose, Tomorrow, and Finale.

4 out of 5 stars world's greatest tenor.......2005-10-29

Mario Lanza was a singer who possessed an absolutely glorious voice. soaring and beautiful, with a deep rich tone. He sings exclusively in his native Italian language on these recordings and the record is in two parts. the first 12 songs are more operatic in structure, containing moody, solemn passages in which Lanza's voice excels in the passion and romantic solitude that this kind of music is so well at expressing. the remaining eight tracks are a series called The Vagabond King and it's song structures are a little bit more of the old Hollywood variety, beginning with the cheery "Drinking Song" (which was a high rated hit in the u.s.). Mario is joined by soprano Judith Raskin on 4 of the songs and his singing is in English for these songs. this is a great introduction to the world of this fabulous singer.

5 out of 5 stars I've fallen in love again.......2003-01-12

I had this as a LP record many years ago, and was absolutely thrilled to find the CD. I had always loved Lanza's voice, but I now realize that he was without a doubt one of the best tenor voices of the century. His ability to sing so many different types of songs is astounding. His voice is strong, filled with emotion and in some of the songs you can hear that he is hugely enjoying himself. What an incredible pity that he died at such a young age and was never able to fulfill all that he could have been.

    Album Description

2006 compilation of mostly unreleased recordings by one of the great unsung bands of the '60s. The Mirage have an upbeat, harmony-laden approach akin to 1966 era Beatles and the Hollies. Many songs, mostly self-penned, were storytelling, observational songs. The Mirage signed to Dick James Publishing and served as the house band for a penny or two, including sessions backing Elton John during his embryonic song writing days. Indeed later on, following the bands break up in 1968, Mirage guitarist Dee Murray then joined Elton Johns own band for his run of classic early 70's albums and tours. 24 tracks total including 'Go Away', a previously unreleased demo featuring lead vocals from Graham Nash (then of The Hollies). RPM.

5 out of 5 stars Authentic music of the period.......2003-05-19

I've listened to this cd many times. I am still not tired of it. Yes, in a sense the music is coarse, but that's the kind of music it is - lusty, bawdy, and expressive of an era of high spirits. And that's the way these songs are sung. These are essentially 17th century tavern songs and are sung by people who obviously know what they're singing. These songs should be enjoyed with a flask of beer or a jug of wine.

1 out of 5 stars To sum it up: YUCK.......2000-07-03

Who could complain about the fabulous tunes published by Playford... wonderful melodies and truly timeless. Unfortunately, here they are performed in a coarse and unmusical way. This "City Waites" ensemble is NOT the same one that recorded the wonderful "Pills to purge melancholy" of Thomas D'Urfey. The singing here is harsh and badly out of tune. There is scant use of instruments to make up for it or cover it up. Of my set of uncounted CDs, this is one of about 3 that I have listened to only a few times- I literally can't sit through it.
