This is in my opinion the best (money) I have ever spent on a cd. There are limitless replay opportunites with this album. His version of Going Down Slow (a Gatemouth Moore original)is awesome it turns a slow classic into a fast rythem masterpiece. Every song on the album is beautifully done. I have without a doubt listened to this cd more than other of the over three hundred Blues cd's I currently own. It is a must have for any true Blues fan. Get it, you will not be disappointed. The first track should be the music you start any roadtrip or "I have had enough trip" with. Don't cheat yourself.

Bobby "Blue" Bland had done great job in this album. Every single song in this album is great. If you have heard these songs in his other albums, I am telling you, they are completely different in this album. All the songs are enhanced with great music that are different that his other albums.

This is the second time I am buying this album; since my first one was stolen from me.

Bobby "Blue" Bland is a master of the sly blues: just when you think a song is going to slip into a predictable blues groove, he cocks back and roars or tosses off a throaty growl that grabs at the base of your spine. It's always magic in person, nearly always magic on records. This CD is NOT his best work and it left me cold on the first few listens; it has a definite 70's quality (hey, it was recorded in 1973) that sometimes edges toward disco arrangements, but as I said, Mr. Bland is such a great master, he rescues it. "If Loving You is Wrong," a song that would (and should) bomb by any other artist is somehow twisted into a tight blues riff by Bland. Overall though, after leaving this in my stereo for several days, I've come to love the CD, despite the 70s song selections, and occasionally corny backing orchestrations, Bland's style and command of his voice rescues it. If you're buying your first Bland CD, look for his recent "Live on Beale Street" or classic "First Class Blues" but if you like a soft blues listen with great horns, give this a try. Not Bland at his best, to be sure, but you just have to love this guy's authenticity. Oh, and if you're a Van Morrison fan (as I am) you'll learn where Van finds a LOT of his horn and backing vocal arrangements. Van only borrows from the best.

Seems like (if you're looking in the right places) the marketplace is flooded with rare groove and underground funk compilations. It's hard to even know where to begin. You could do a whole hell of a lot worse than 'California Soul.' Distributed by Ubiquity, who guarantees all their albums - and always live up to the promise in my book - this one is wall to wall sound. Lots of variation too; from laid-back soul to mellow funk to righteous grooves and even a latin dip ("The Wobble Cha"). All culled from the best years of the 70's, the golden age of black music in America. If you dig soul and funk and you stumble on this one somewhere...pick it up and run.

I love this CD man - it ROCKS. You are especially gonna love the Carnival (track 11) although of course Orquestra Esencia aren't on top form because when they play the Carnival they play the best of all. They play at wakes and wedding and at all the fancy balls, but they cancelled playing funerals to play the CARNIVAL. You're ALSO gonna love tracks 1 through 14 a.k.a the whole thing. TOP.

This 4 CD, 62 song set is a must have for jazz fans! What a great range of artists!
It covers the California Jazz Scene on the Contemporary Records label from 1950-1964.
Some of the most influential artists of all time recorded for Contemporary Records during these years, and this box set is truly awesome!
A 70 page booklet comes with the set with all kinds of great essays and trivia about the California Jazz Scene in the 50's and 60's, as well as complete track-by-track info. about every song.

Hey, if you're just a casual jazz fan and don't know that much about this music, this is a great primer for you!

Don't be put off by the title AN ANTHOLOGY OF CALIFORNIA JAZZ which may conjure up some bland, ice-cream type, hair bleached, shallow feel-good music. This boxed set has excerpts from some of the very best jazz of the fifties, period, and includes work by Mr Miles Davis, Mr Sonny Rollins, Mr Ornette Coleman,Mr Clifford Brown, Mr Ben Webster and Mr Art Tatum. It includes, for me, some of my all time favourite tracks from some all time favourite albums including: BERNIE'S TUNE and MY FUNNY VALENTINE by the ORIGINAL Mulligan Quartet;ETUDE DE CONCERT by Shelley Manne and his Men; DAAHOUD by the Clifford Brown Ensemble; BLUE SANDS by the Chico Hamilton Quintet which has one of Mr Jim Hall's greatest solos ; KATANGA by Curtis Amy Sextet featuring the work of underrated unknown trumpet player Mr Dupree Bolton; YOU'D BE SO NICE TO COME HOME TO by the Art Pepper Quartet featuring the rhythm section of Mr Miles Davis; THE FOX by the Harold Land Quintet again featuring Mr Dupree Bolton on trumpet;and finally, 2 DEGREES EAST, 3 DEGREES WEST which is a truly beautiful track from a great album by Mr John Lewis called GRAND ENCOUNTERS (Bill Perkins, John Lewis, Jim Hall, Percy Heath, Chico Hamilton). Because there is so much good music on this anthology, it's best to take it a little at a time so rich are its benefits. Getz, Mulligan, John Lewis, Eric Dolphy, Woody Hermans Herd, Chet Baker (at his best), Cal Tjader - The truly greats of the era play some of the best tunes, like Bernies Tune, and My Funny Valentine, and others of the West Coast phenom! I truly enjoyed the mix and the variety of this monumental package. I consider it a milestone in what may become a revival of really cool sound. Thanks.

I prefer the video version to plain audio (you just have to see what they're doing when they're singing, the kid in you will enjoy it) but if you just want the music, these songs are great.

      I'm 21 now, I've keep this tape since I was like six yeaers old, and I have to say Christmas wouldn't be the same without it. Man it's sad how happy it makes me. It's really for all ages and I can't want to share it with a family of my own someday!! Merry Christmas!!!!

      I am 27 and every year I look forward to hearing this CD. I listened to it growing up and now my children will grow up to it. It's fun to dance to and puts you in a good mood. It's a little dorky but it's still a classic.

      I'm 19 yrs. old and I still love this album, my parents got the cassette of this back in the early 90's, and we have listened to it ever since, too bad you cannot buy the CD anymore. I currently own a copy of the CD, I had to download all the songs, but at least I have the album, so if you ever get a chance to buy this, please do, it will not dissapoint!!!

      I've had this CD forever and I can tell you that this is hands-down the the most widely liked Christmas album I own. There's always someone who says "I love this! Who is this?" They can barely believe it when I say it's the California Raisins.

      Christmas with the California Raisins was given to me shortly after its release in 1988. Since that time I have recently lost my copy. Hands down this is the best Christmas album I have heard in years. There is just something about it that puts you in the holiday spirit even if you are feeling like a "Scrooge". If you can find a copy of this on cd or cassette, please do yourself a favor and get it. You will not be disapointed.

        This is coming from a pop music fan who is 13!! I like Buddy Miles voice. It is great!! The songs I like:
        ~Stand By Me- No word to describe this!!
        ~Lean On Me- I don't like this as much as 'Stand By Me', but it is still good!!
        I recommend this to people who like older music!!
