Album Description

Originally released in 1967, Soul Finger was the Bar-Kays' first album, and it's obvious why they were constantly lauded by legends such as Booker T. Jones and Steve Cropper as key soul music innovators. Soul Finger was the only release by the original lineup before the tragic December 1967 plane crash that killed Otis Redding and four of the band (they reformed in 1968). The album contains 11 instrumental tracks, each of them catchy, danceable and all around attention-grabbing. Soul Finger is marked by Phalon Jones and Ben Cauley's infectious horn riffs and Jimmy King's sparse yet sensitive guitar work. Add Ronnie Caldwell's bluesy organ and Carl Cunningham's rock steady grooves, and you've got a hypnotic recipe for the down-home Memphis soul. Songs such as 'You Can't Sit Down' and 'Bar-Kay's Boogaloo' are ideal party tunes. Energetic and life affirming, this music is simply contagious. Includes original liner notes by Booker T. of the MG's. Warner. 2005.

4 out of 5 stars Stax '07.......2007-05-16

I seem to recall having a 45 of "Soul Finger" on the Volt label when I was about 4 years old. I still think it's a great song. The Bar Kays were similar to Booker T & The MGs, in fact Booker himself wrote the liner notes. This is great Stax/Volt instrumental music from the 60s. I just wish the sound quality was louder.

4 out of 5 stars The young, new exponents of the Stax/Volt soul sound '67!.......2000-09-16

The Bar-Kays were part of the next generation of Stax-Volt artists, entering a vibrant soul scene populated by the likes of Booker T. & the MG's, The Mar-Keys, Sam & Dave, William Bell, and Otis Redding. MG drummer Al Jackson, Jr. had taken the young group under his wing, gearing them up for this fantastic 1967 debut. The blistering title track is an unquestionable Memphis soul classic, kicking off a strong set of 11 instrumental cuts. House-wrecking numbers like "Knucklehead," "You Can't Sit Down" and "House Shoes" are sure to get your party started. Sadly, this would be the first and last record from the original Bar-Kays lineup. While on tour with Otis Redding, a tragic airplane crash took the lives of Otis and four members of the group, just six months after the release of this album. The remaining members (trumpeter Ben Cauley and bassist James Alexander) later reformed the group, playing back-up on several Isaac Hayes records and releasing a string of albums that moved their sound towards heavier funk with vocals. The CD reissue includes Booker T.'s original liner notes, testifying the promise of their contagious grooves. This disc is a very enjoyable and often overlooked gem. Definitely recommended for fans of '60s soul.

1 out of 5 stars Why ?.......1999-12-15

Why is Polygram releasing all these greatest hits compilations on this gritty, nasty, just too tight funk band. They have to be one of the hottest groups to come out of the south. And the justice that Polygram is giving them on these compilations aren't gonna do. They are just barely scratching the surface of what this band has to offer. I would like to see full length cd's by this super funk group. Cause anybody who was around when they were in their prime knows that the party wasn't happening till there were some Bar-Kays jams being played. Come on Polygram (Universal/Uni whatever your calling yourself's) get with the program and show these brother's some love. Release the full length(Too Hot To Stop,Light Of Life,Injoy,As One,Nightcruising, etc.)already ! Dang! Oh, and enough with the compilations already.

5 out of 5 stars burning South funk.......1999-09-19

this group could groove on par with any group from back in the day.the songs have feeling and plenty of emotion about them.while maintaing an ear for radio they also injected there own brand of style to each release.and considering they had a second life after a fatal plane crash killed the original barkays and the great Ottis redding one Barkay survived. so able to re group and come back even stronger is a true statement about them.this group always delivered the funk and this set is testiment to that.

Product Description

If Move Your Boogie Body isnt one of the best calls to get your tired behind out of the chair and onto the dance floor, well, we dont know what is. The Bar-Kays came to prominence, and also nearly to conclusion, as Otis Reddings backup band at Stax. Made up primarily of studio musicians, the Stax/Volt doppelganger for the Funk Brothers was almost entirely wiped out in the plane crash that claimed the life of Otis Redding just as he was having his signature hit, "(Sittin On) The Dock Of The Bay." Upon regrouping, the Bar-Kays kept a fairly steady profile on the R&B charts as a primarily instrumental soul/funk unit. They accompanied Isaac Hayes on his breakthrough Hot Buttered Soul album, but gradually realized that their horizons would widen only if they branched into vocals. In 1971, they brought in Larry Dodson as their vocalist, and the following year they scored their biggest chart hit since Soul Finger. Flash forward to 1979: the Bar-Kays have departed their bankrupted label (Stax) for Mercurys greener pastures. Actually, the pastures were lined with gold: all their Seventies Mercury albums (with one exception) went gold or platinum. Injoy leaped onto the R&B album charts explosively, reaching #2 (it hit #35 on the pop charts). Seamlessly amalgamating their earlier funk with the Euro-dance sounds being popularized by the likes of studio wizard Giorgio Moroder, the Bar-Kays set themselves up for half a decade of continued success with this album.

3 out of 5 stars cool album.......2006-01-30

I always dug me some Bar Kays. they were fun on Record&Brought it even more live on stage."Move your Boogie Body' was my joint. Larry Dotson brought the Pain.together with Producer Allen Jones they would incorperate what was happening on the radio&play on top of that. please read that last part because some People think People taking things here&there is something new,but if you will&the Bar Kays are talented cats, but this was in part a pre-cursor to what puffy,Dr.Dre&others do. the difference between what allen Jones&the bar Kays did in the studio was actually play Live.you heard traces of P-funk,Earth,wind&Fire,Rick James&others but the Bar Kays were a Happening act.

4 out of 5 stars (3.5 Stars) New School Bar-Kays.......2007-06-26

The younger generation would probably look at you funny if you mentioned the name Bar-Kays. But for many seasoned soul fans, the name means a whole lot more. After enduring hardships and countless line-up changes, the Bar-Kays were among many musical groups who survived the 70s and much of the 80s but struggled to remain relevant through the late 80s and 90s with the changing landscape in music. Nevertheless, the Bar-Kays would eventually evolve to a new soul outfit led by the original bassist James Alexander and the band's first lead vocalist Larry Dodson. Alexander and Dodson have been leading the group for many years now, performing here and there and releasing a few albums since the early 90s. Their latest disc House Party continues their legacy of soul/funk but marries it with today's contemporary sound. The lead off single "Sho Nuff" featuring James Alexander's son Jazze Pha is the perfect example of this combination, along with the thumping "What Goes-N-Da-Club Stays N Da-Club." Fans of funk will be pleased with songs like groovy "Give Me My Heart Back" and the spellbinding "Hey Y'all" with the latter song infusing hip-hop elements into it as well. The band doesn't leave the ladies behind though, offering old school/new school fusions like "Superstar" and "My Everything." With this new incarnation of the Bar-Kays, House Party will surely be a welcome addition to an already extensive collection of hits.

5 out of 5 stars a mothership landed in memphis?.......2007-07-10

The Bar-Kays were the funksters for the STAX label without any doubt. I picked up on the Bar-Kays during their Mercury years when they began scoring hits alongside other hard core 70 Funk bands like P-Funk, The Ohio Players and Bootsy Rubberband. Their STAX years were very interesting especially tracking their evolution from a Memphis style house band ("Soul Finger" etc..) to a radical Funk/Black Rock band as witnessed in concert, via the film "WattStax". This collection of songs came from their 4th STAX album. Each track stands on their on on this masterpiece "Love Pollution" and "I was made to love her" signify that Funk effort which would produce million sellers for Mercury in years to come while showcasing instrumental material from the late 60's on 2 of the disc 5 bonus tracks. The liner notes said it all concerning the Bar-Kays. STAX did'nt understand how to properly promote this group on a roster that also included a diverse yet Soul/Gospel influenced artist featuring among others The Staple Singers,Albert King and Johnny Taylor etc.. The Bar-Kays "Do you see what I see" should have been a Funk classic when it was originally released in January of 1973, however it came and went. The group got to prove it self again and again when STAX folded and they headed to Mercury creating several million seling albums and numerous top 20 records. It is interesting to note that during The Bar-Kays run at Mercury the Fantasy label who had just purchased the STAX catalog in the late 70's sent out the album "Money Talks" which produced the top ten hit "Holy Ghost"..ultimately they would sell a million from that record.

5 out of 5 stars GREATEST FUNK UNIT EVER!!!!!!!.......2004-01-19

This is the TRUE bomb. The Bar-Kays are the most underrated r&b group ever. Mention the work "funk" and people immediately think Parliament or Funkadelic or Parliament-Funkadelic (not a band-see how peoples thinking is off?), maybe James Brown...maybe even the Chili Peppers. Not to take away anything from the aforementioned bands, but the Bar-Kays are the hands down KINGS of stripped down bare bones, street level, boogernose, body odor, tartaronyateeth funk (okay, I went a bit Arsenio there, but it's true!). EVERYBODY knows the "Theme from Shaft" by Isaac Hayes, but do they know it was the Bar-Kays who were his backing band on the Shaft soundtrack and many of his other fantastic Stax LP's, including the fantastic classic "Hot Buttered Soul"?
I liked Parliament but man, they just went overboard sometimes and the production that was their band occasionally seemed to lose sight of the funky bottom. No so with the Bar-kays. They kept it simple and straight. They didn't have the musical chops of James Browns outfit or the legions of musicians that worked with George Clinton, but they could write funky jams like noone else.
This compilation doesn't have their biggest hit "Soul Finger", but it does have some of my fave cuts like "In the Hole", "A.J. the Housefly", "Holy Ghost" and Son of Shaft".
If you want some severely hot jams to test the speaker system in your lowrider as you cruise the ave, this isn't a bad way to go. I blast this in my ride and ALWAYS get looks from people.
    A true street soundtrack.

Beginning as a house band and understudies of Booker T. and the MGs with STAX Records in Memphis in 1966, The Barkays’ potent dynamic sound would carry them to a chart topping perch the very next year with their first smash single “Soul Finger”. After the tragic death of four band members in an airplane accident while touring with Otis Redding, the surviving members have reformed and rebuilt the band with no diminishing of the standards of professionalism and showmanship. The Barkays have released 27 LPs, including 5 gold and 1 platinum, 37 single releases, and 20 top ten singles.

      3 out of 5 stars Funky Stuff.......2007-07-02

This CD captures the essence of the Bar Kays: gritty, funky and soulful. The only issue I have with the product is the murky, remixed version of "Your Place or Mine"; I was hoping that it would be the radio mix that was popular in the 80's, but instead it is a pretty unlistenable version with the vocals buried deep in the mix. Otherwise, stellar.

      3 out of 5 stars Overlooked!.......2004-12-07

The Bar-Kays were often overlooked because there were so many bands in their era, like EWF, The Commodores, Ohio Players and Parliament. However, they managed to find a niche and a folllowing. But this particular collection is sparse and spotty. I own the other Greatest Hits collection and it is more thorough and holds more of their popular gems. I purchased this CD solely for one song that could not be found on the other compilation and that song is: Running In and Out of My Life! Seriously bad, harmonious, mid-tempo jam! Worth putting out the extra money!

5 out of 5 stars OLD SCHOOL RULES.......2001-07-03
