There's only one word that comes immediately to mind when describing Anberlin's Never Take Friendship Personal release. The word? Amazing. This is one of those truly remarkable releases that is so refreshing, so defining, and so well done, you will feel a need to let every know about it. Much like Switchfoot's The Beautiful Letdown and D.C. Talk's Jesus Freak, Anberlin's second release captures the musical styles of the day but recasts them in a unique and exciting way. Much credit up front should go to producer Aaron Sprinkle, who never lets the music overshadow Steven Christian's emotive alto vocals. Joseph Milligan's guitar work is nothing short of phenomenal and propels such blistering tracks like "Paperthin Hymn," "Runaways," and "Feel Good Drag." Let's not forget the rock-steady rhythm from drummer Nathan Young and bassist Deon Rexroat that continually lays down a concrete foundation. Also worthy of note is the intelligent songwriting that prevails throughout the release, showing that Christian-based bands don't always check their brains at the studio door. Moody at times, exhilarating at others, this is a giant leap forward for a relative newcomer in Christian music. It's also a release worthy of widespread acclaim and a breath of fresh air in a genre that is sadly growing all too predictable. --Michael Lyttle
Customer Reviews:
This album is just amazing.........2007-06-12
I just got this album a few days ago, so i have yet to determine my favorite songs or even the names of songs. This cd has yet to leave my ears. When I'm driving..Never Take friendship personal..on the computer..NTFP..even at work..NTFP. I bought Cities before i bought this cd and this cd is even better than Cities..some how. This cd is incredible it mixes every single great part of rock into this cd. Extremely catchy breakdown, powerful, emotional vocals, great lyrics, and choruses and verses that are almost too addictive. There is honestly nothing to hate on this album if you like any genre of rock. There's an amazing slow rock ballad, fast-paced songs with some guitar solos..and that's just the beginning. Some songs that i remember singing in my head constantly are Paperthin Hymn, the feel good drag, a day late, and dance with... I also love the song start the revolution (i think thats what its called) Buying this cd will be the best decision you will ever make and it is worth every penny...oh yeah and see them live if your the slighest fan of anberlin..which i know you are
Solid album, one of my favorites!.......2007-03-08
I had not heard of Snow Patrol until I heard "Chasing Cars" on the radio, and I bought their cd on a whim. I must say I was not dissapointed. The only reason for 4/5 stars is that a couple of the songs seemed a little off to me. But that is only a couple of songs. You will love this album.
Absolutely stunning!.......2007-03-06
This is IMO, Anberlin's strongest album. The only average song on this album, ironically, is the title track. Every other song is stunning and single worthy.
Best CD I've ever heard..........2007-02-19
To start with, my music tastes are quite different from a ton of people out there. Most trendy music these days I find to be absolutely horrible - i.e., pop, rock, and rap. My favorite music genres are videogame soundtracks and techno/electronica, probably because they are generally free of lyrics. I also tend to like anything instrumental due to the same thing. This said, I also am a fairly large fan of classic rock, Pink Floyd, Foreigner, Journey, The Police, etc.
Now that I've conveyed my general musical interests, you have an idea of where the review is coming from. My friend made me listen to yet another band in his car one day and I sighed and said "whatever". About 20 minutes later, I wanted to know the name of the band that played "that song", which happened to be "We Dreamt in Heist" from Anberlin's first CD (Blueprints for the Black Market). I proceeded to check out the entirety of Blueprints that evening and shockingly discovered that a mainstream rock band had taken my musical tastes by storm! Anberlin's sound is so amazing, and for some reason so unique from other rock artists out there these days, and it really hit the spot.
A few weeks later, I got my hand on this CD, Never Take Friendship Personal, and at first I found myself going back to Blueprints for the Black Market. However, a few months later here I am, and I have decided this disc is my favorite not only of Anberlin's, but of any collection of music I have ever heard.
I highly recommend this CD, and in particular Dance, Dance Christa Paffgen. If at first you don't love these songs, listen a couple more times and I guarantee you'll be singing them in the shower. ;)
Great Album.......2007-02-09
I really like this cd a lot and I am looking forward to seeing them live.

Like many other senior bluesmen, Delbert McClinton is getting back to basics: Nothing Personal, his first album for New West, is the raw, stripped-down sort of material that sounds best when you know it comes from experience. It is this sense of things seen and done that pervades every track, and which prevents songs like "When Rita Leaves" and "Don't Leave Home Without It" from lapsing into sentimentality. The more emotional, personal numbers--the album's title notwithstanding, this is a highly personal album--are balanced with high-energy material, though even these songs, such as "Livin' It Down," have a serious thing or two to say. McClinton also neatly avoids several clichés. Take, for instance, "Nothing Lasts Forever," which has, as a theme, the necessity of living life to the fullest without burning yourself out. One might expect such a song to be an uptempo rocker. Instead, it moves along at an easy, swinging pace, the musical personification of following a path of moderation. Nothing Personal is full of little touches and techniques like this, moving out of the realm of merely good, and into the ranks of art. --Genevieve Williams

Getting better with time!!.......2006-12-30
Great tunes, great grooves, great vocals!! Delbert's at the top of his craft to me right now. Great section, love Lynne Williams on drums. Delbert visits all the genres of Americana music encapsulating the pure tradition along with that distinct "Delbert" sound. The band is off the top on this disc, and will just flat groove you dealth. RIGHT ON DELBERT!!
Delbert is the best.......2005-09-20
I'm never disappointed by Delbert. I chose this purchase because I heard him recently singing the song, When Rita Leaves, and when I did the research - this was the album with the song. It's not often you hear a rhumba - and this one is great! I highly recommend this CD!
Delbert's the BEST of Texas music.......2005-07-31
Delbert has aged to PERFECTION. For the essential Delbert, you must get both Nothing Personal and Room to Breathe. Delbert's rocking is infectious, his wit is wry, his blues are pure Texas... he's simply THE BEST of Texas. Want some great humor and clever rhyming? Try Living it Down. When you listen to When Rita Leaves, you KNOW that man really did something awful to get a woman so mad that she... (you'd better listen to the lyrics). The joy of sex with a twist of humor? Try All Night Long. More sex? find it at the steamy Baggage Claim. The song I first heard by Delbert that got me wanting to hear more was Squeeze Me In...what a fun rocker. I'm proud to be from Delbert country!
His best.......2004-08-17
I thought "One of the Fortunate Few" would be Delbert's best ever, forever. I was wrong. This is great stuff here. Took me a few listens to really get into it, but it is GREAT. "Read Me My Rights" is just the greatest. "When Rita Leaves," "Desperation," 'Don't Leave Home Without It," are all top, top notch. This CD has variety and quality from start to finish. This isn't just GREAT DELBERT, this is GREAT ANYBODY!!
On the money..........2004-05-12
I've been a Delbert McClinton fan for 25 years or more. I had not bought anything in the last 10 years by him, so I recently bought this CD. Delbert financed it himself, took a year to record it, and released it in 2001. "Nothing Personal" did not blow me away. But I found it very easy to listen to. Good grooves, good feel. It's hard to believe he 60 years old. Anyway, I listened to it again. And again. I am not one to wear the grooves off any record (or should I say the pits off a CD), but in three weeks that I have had the CD, I must have played it through completely a couple of dozen times.
And are a few songs I stop and play again - simply because I like them. Songs like Squeeze Me In, Gotta Get It Worked On, Nothing Lasts Forever. He is so totally sincere in All There Is Of Me. Some really good piano and guitar playing. And Delbert's a soulful harp player.
It is an honest, sincere work with story lines I could certainly relate to, and I am sure others will too.

Album Description
Sage is an accomplished spoken word poet and emcee with several competitive titles to his name within both genres. He also performs with a live band, Art Official Intelligence, and together with Joe Beats and DJ Perseus, forms the Non-Prophets. He is equal parts serious and silly, but never fails to be entertaining. 18 tracks. 2002.
Customer Reviews:
The right man, raise up one hand now, I'm taking you down.......2006-11-03
The first word that springs to mind, having just listened again to this album, is "depth". As mentioned in another review he verges on poetry to a hip-hop beat, but to typecast his sound as hip-hop would not give credit to the range of live instruments, issues, tones and styles he demonstrates or comments on.
It really is a great album but I can imagine if you are expecting the commercial sound of Busta, Elliot, Eminem etc. you are not going to get the gangster hip-hop sound you are used to.
In summary It's one continuous, refined and well produced, piece of music. But as always with something complexed you owe it to yourself to listen to the tracks Amazon provide.
One of the best albums out there!.......2006-10-13
The ones who are trash-talking this album are probably less intelligent beings. Or maybe they just feel insecure because Sage is turning hiphop into almost everything it's not. Or wasn't.
This album is great. The songs are well crafted and some of them are unforgetable classics. This masterpiece is, without a doubt, the best CD Sage has given us, and definetly one of my personal top 10's. But if you're looking for songs about ca$h and crime, where curse words are used to fill out the blanks and women are constantly referred to as 'hoes' or 'bitches', don't buy this.
Lyrical Abstraction at its finest..........2006-04-19
I have nothing to add to the brilliance of this record...there are over eighty entries below mine, but Personal Journals did affect my whole outlook on hip-hop when I first heard it four years ago, and made me see and appreciate this gifted emcee in a whole new light. Personal Journals is a triumph of a debut album that succeeds in every regard. From "crack pipes" on, the album seems to weave itself and at times you forget that the tracks are independent of each other since they are so finely intertwined. Sage's spoken wordplay is awe-inspiring and not at all watered down from his "sick of..." releases. The choice of producers adeptly complement his lyrics, and Personal Journals should be appreciated for what it really is: a classic on par with any of the best old-school hip-hop.
Extreme fluctuations and temperature changes..........2006-03-19
Sage Francis is a phenomenal battle emcee. It doesn't show on this album...Fortunately Sage is also an incredible poet, and that shows on this album like red on white. To get a few things out of the way before I go into track listings I'll tell you if you are a fan of good rap then you should probably buy this album. If you like Cassidy, don't buy it...or buy it to shoot it with your gat. Sage Francis is "Different in a Different Way" and if you have never heard him before he may take some getting used to.
You will have to listen to some songs multiple times just to hear some incredible wordplay lines like "If you ever need to paint with razorblades and need a canvas use my skin," from Inherited Scars or to understand the layed on intracicies of a song like "Runaways."
Obviously there are no songs necessary to skip on here, but some stand out more than others. Some of my favorite tracks are: Crack Pipes, Personal Journalist, Inherited Scars, Broken Wings, Smoke and Mirrors, Eviction Notice, and Runaways.
If there is anything this CD is missing it's lack of collaborations, which isn't unusual for Sage or for his type of hip-hop-however I like the work he's done in the past with artists like Sixtoo, Buck 65, Slug, and Brother Ali (Doomage). This CD is very replayable, and although not the best from Sage darn close.
Sage converted me to gangsterism.......2006-02-02
Ok, joking. I'm no gangster, but I definitely have a huge appreciation for rap/hip hop after hearing Mr. Francis. He's simply amazing! His music is art--original and mind-blowing. His lyrics are like spoken-word poems, so powerful and passionate.
I use to despise rap/hip hop, as if it were some mainstream poison my educated ears could not handle. Now I love it, all thanks to Sage.
This album displays Sage's poetic talent at its best. He's a deep, thoughtful man. His other stuff is good, but not as spectacular as Personal Journals. Sage will always be my homie.

On her second full-length album, Lindsay Lohan tries to leave her Disney image behind for good. And what better way to do it than by starting off with the stark "Confessions of a Broken Heart (Daughter to Father)," in which the singer wrestles with her stormy relationship with her felonious father? Lohan Sr. also is the object of the tortured "My Innocence" (as in, Dad, you took it away.) But the best tracks here are the ones on which Lohan Jr. spares us the angsty therapy and delivers tuneful pop-rock. Sure, the kind of rousing mega-chorus used on "Black Hole" has already been heard--to greater effect--in Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone," but it's still nifty. Elsewhere, "A Little More Personal" begins with Lohan talking about how talking at the start of a song is "rad," but then it turns into a very Cars-like tune--and it's hard to think of a catchier band than the Cars. No wonder it all sounds so impressively slick: For this transitional album, Lohan has surrounded herself with a team of pros--Kara DioGuardi (who's also written for Lohan rivals Ashlee Simpson and Hilary Duff, and coauthored 9 of the 12 songs here), power-popster Butch Walker, and former Evanescence guitarist Ben Moody. The first two also put their producing stamp on a cover of Cheap Trick's "I Want You to Want Me" that's even more upbeat than the original, while Moody applied his tech skills on the other cover, Stevie Nicks' "Edge of Seventeen." Moody particularly shines on "Fastlane," however, a super-catchy number that's one of four for which Lohan gets a songwriting credit. Has she grown up? Maybe not entirely yet, but Lohan is showing the promise of an honorable mainstream career. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Continuing respectability.......2007-07-11
This sophmore album from Lindsay does grow on the listener, I must admit it. It's nothing spectacular, but it's very listenable and quite enjoyable. Ignore Lindsay's personal life and, to be honest, the things she tries to say about it on this album. They're not particularly credible or interestig. Focus on the music. It's a bit more of a rocky and edgy sound than the debut "Speak." Lindsay's husky voice has its own unique quality to it, can't be said that she sounds just like just a carbon copy of a whole gaggle of other young singers. The songs A Little More Personal and Who Loves You are very good, I hit the repeat button. In summary, quite respectable female pop/rock.
Lindsay Lohan Needs To Find Another Way To Make Money..........2007-06-04
**I want to give this work of the ludicrous Lindsay Lohan a (-)100 stars, but the review format only lets me go down to 1 star...
Poor Lindsay Lohan...
She's been enabled practically all her life to produce terrible movies, music, posters, and personal actions. Unless you, the consumer, enjoy having a reverse peristaltic reaction to this horrible album, then by all means waste your money and buy it. Emergency Rooms should stock this album for use when a patient must evacuate their bowels do to poisoning.
I suggest that if you need to listen to the pathetic groans and moans of an adolescent alcoholic and drug addict, buy stuff from the Olsen Twins; that way you'll get a two-for-one deal...
Good Luck...!
Defending Lohan and It's Okay.....I Guess.......2007-02-04
I would never review music, but I felt bad at all the people knocking her. I don't think this is a terrible CD. I do think that this may very well be Lohan singing. Her voice is decent but just flawed enough that I think it is genuinely hers. The songs aren't terrible, they are actually listenable. Her cover of the Stevie Nicks song was actually sort of good. I guess her biggest problem is that they are very forgettable. I would never buy it, but if it was given to me for free I would keep it. This is probably best for mom's that are looking for something to buy their tween's that isn't completely and uberly sexed up.
Love this girl!.......2007-01-01
Lindsay Lohan's "A Little More Personal (RAW)" is amazing. I love the kind of 80's feel to it. Its definetly moody, and she gives her soul and heart into this album. I love to listen to this CD...it's timeless....
There should be a law ...........2006-11-28
There should be a law that prevents untalented "singers" like La Lohan from re-recording ANY Stevie Nicks song.

Although Nilsson didn't select the tracks for this two-CD collection drawn from his '60s and '70s work for RCA, Personal Best generously touches on the many sides of his musical personality: the whimsical (his layered version of the Beatles' "You Can't Do That"), the soaring ("Without You," "Don't Leave Me"), and the flat-out oddball (a cover of the Louis Jordan-Ray Charles classic "Early in the Morning"). Holding it all together is his tremendous melodic sense and a voice that was at first gorgeous, then ravaged by the artist's excesses. When he died in 1994, the world lost one of its truest originals. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
The best from one of the best.......2006-06-21
If you appreciate finely crafted pop/rock music and a one-of-a-kind knockout singer with a 4 plus octave range, it's pretty tough to go wrong with this collection. Harry Nilsson was one of the best ever, and 50 songs aren't enough, but what is here, particularly the period from 1967-1973, is incredible.
I really wanted to correct the plethora of misinformation that appears in "Marty from S.F.'s" review. First, Nilsson first recorded in 1962, not 1964, and that material (originally demos) is currently available. Also, I don't know how many singles Harry actually released (I'm thinking somewhere around 20-24), but it is nowhere near 60. Finally, from 1967 to 1981 (he didn't release anything after 1981), he released 14 albums. This does not include the soundtrack "Skidoo", for which he wrote some material, but certainly can't be considered a Nilsson album. It also does not include Son of Dracula or Aerial Pandamonium Ballet. Dracula (soundtrack to the terrible film) only included one new song (Daybreak) and A.P.B. was a remixed composite of Harry's first two LPs, released to capitalize on his new found popularity and respect after winning a Grammy for Everybody's Talking.
I love that Amazon provides this great forum for sharing POV, but I don't care for those who want to rewrite history. The facts are the facts...don't mess with 'em.
The Best Of The Rest!!!.......2006-03-16
This is a great compilation of Harry Nilsson starting out with his autobiography song 1941 all the way up to his last songs released in 1977 !!! The only problem is they could have added a few more favorites this compilation like Cuddly Toy , The Puppy Song which were included on his Single Cd Greatest Hits also they could have included Kojak Columbo and Who Done It, maybe even the Long version instead of the Single version of Jump into the Fire but overall a nice package!!!
Should'a been 3 discs and the correct track order for Harry.......2006-01-29
Rock history is littered with the bones of artists who were broken by their record companies, RCA were no different, Harry wanted 3 discs and the tracks to be in the order he felt was right. They wouldn't and didn't, not long after he died of a massive heart attack. Not suprisingly really! Still, these ARE some of his greatest gifts to us, sadly you can see how his lifestlye finally ravaged that sublime voice and his pitch was not so perfect, but still an amazing legacy we can enjoy for ever.
Very comprehensive anthology containing 49 songs..........2004-12-08
Very comprehensive anthology containing 49 songs from 1964 to 1992. Includes a 36 page booklet with an excellent biography with lots of interesting insights and trivia and plenty of cool photos. Normal people would be better served owning either a greatest hits collection or his phenomenal album Nilsson Schmilsson, but of course I'm not normal.
A Broad taste of Harry.......2004-06-05
This is a broad collection of Harry Nilsson tunes from early works such as Cuddly Toy(My Best Friend) to Midnight Cowboy to his Classic Nilsson Smilsson work to the end of the trail when he does his Pussycats album with his voice sounding much labored. There is virtually every memorable tune that Harry has done such as he early 70's sweet "Me and My Arrow" to soft clasics that are joyous renditions such as "Somewhere over the Rainbow" and "as Time Goes By" and his song about New York City. These latter songs have gotten play on the Big Screen with "You've Got Mail" and other romance movies showing that Nilsonn's voice was elagant and beautiful even for today's adult romantic fims. The range is very broad and some songs I feel do not peice together well as the CD tries to capture something during the entire length of Harry's career. It is still a great collection. The great thing about a CD is that you can push a button to by pass a tune to get to those that you love. This Cd gives you a nice swath of Nilsson's career.

Don't waste your precious time on Earth listening to these guys recycling great old tunes.
Seek the originals, or at least, the definitive early versions.
To wit:
One listen to Have Love Will Travel by THE SONICS and you'll be muttering, BELUSHI WHO?

somewhat original.......2004-12-24
I've always got a kick out of the blues brothers and I would recommend this cd to both snl fans and lovers of classic r&b/blues & rock......Having read some of the other reviews, I would like to point out a fallacy. This is NOT mostly original. There are some original tunes but over half are cover versions. In fact, nine of the thirteen songs are covers. I listed them below with the original recording artists-
Have Love, Will Travel-Richard Berry (of Louie Loiue fame)
Dig Myself A Hole-Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup
Time Won't Let Me-The Outsiders
Polk Salad Annie-Tony Joe White
300 Pounds Of Joy-Howlin Wolf
All She Wants To Do Is Rock-Wynonie Harris
Greenbacks-Ray Charles
Swinging Party-Lowell Fulsom
Driving Wheel-Roosevelt Sykes
Aykroyd & Belushi never tried to take credit for songs performed as the Blues Brothers and I don't think they would do so now.
True Identities Revealed.......2004-07-17
For 20+ years, Dan Aykroyd (an avid blues fan) has been performing the music he loved under the persona of Elwood Blues, one half of the now legendary "Blues Brothers" mystique. Thanks to the movies, it's been hard for Aykroyd to shed those glasses and hat and simply perform the music he loves AS Dan Aykroyd.
This album finally gives him the chance to perform as himself. Although teamed with one-time "Blues Brothers" singing mate, Jim Belushi (filling the shoes of Aykroyd's late partner, John Belushi), don't expect this to be another blues tribute album. For the first time, these two men (who have definitely blossomed as singers in their own right) have recorded a straight-forward studio album of modern blues songs, the majority of which are originals.
There is no gimmick on this album, simply two men singing, backed by a talented band (none of which were involved in the original Blues Brothers Band, by the way). As stated in other reviews, this is NOT a Blues Brothers recording. It IS a great blues project, however.
Jim Belushi and Dan Aykroyd are wonderful performers.......2004-03-08
I have gone to two of their CD signings and I got to met Dan Aykroyd. Jim, I met at a According To Jim taping. Songs from this CD was played on ATJ. The first season was "Cadillac Man", next season was "Have Love Will Travel" and "Can't Get Out Of It," and final this season they did "300 Pounds of Joy" and "Time Won't Let Me." Since I have it I been playing it over and over. I am a big fan of both of them, and also I love the Blues Brothers. They also do a wonderful Blues Brothers show. Any fan should add this to their collection, I have and its great music. I have Jim's other CD called 36-22-36 and it's also a great one. Both CD's I recommend. Great Blues music.
The Nicest guy on TV and in real life!.......2003-09-10
Saw Jim Belushi and the Sacred Hearts at the ABC Preview Weekend in Anaheim recently. That's actually the first time I've heard him sing. I've been a fan of his acting for quite a while now. I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed his performance. It was very cool and I like the fact that he gets down there and interacts with the audience! After the show, he stayed for the people who were waiting for autographs and photos. He didn't leave anyone out. Most celebrities can't wait to get away! (THANK YOU, JIM! It means a lot to the fans.) His music got stuck in my head the entire night and the next day so I had to go and buy the CD. It ROCKS!!

that we all love from the Renn Faire or the occasional convention. Full of fun with some of the sweeter melodies such as "Wild Mountain Thyme" this is the Bards at their best. If you're like and fell in love with these guys at a Faire or con, then this is surely the CD for you.

Captures the spirit of their live show........2004-05-20
The live show.
An audience in garb laughs and claps and sings along. Marc dances around as Andrew tries to maintain sanity. Sometimes.
It's the best thing about the Bards.
The Bards have recorded a tremendous library of old Ren Faire favorites, original songs, folk music, and the occasional Tom Lehrer tribute piece, and dominated the World Music charts on the old MP3.com.
A Faire to Remember captures the spirit of their live Ren Faire show; they recorded the songs the way they're performed, and even threw in "A Short Interlude" to keep the banter going. As I listened, I felt like they were with me in my living room, talking to me, while I laughed and clapped and sang along.
If you like the Bards' music and haven't heard them live, the free-form approach of A Faire to Remember is as close to being there as you can get. You owe it to your "elf" to get this CD.
Love Renaissance Faires? You'll love this cd..........2004-05-13
Beloved faire songs, including The Mermaid, make this compilation a must-have for any faire goer...recommended, too, for faire newcomers who want a quick sampling of the music they will likely hear at any rensaissance faire...and, as always, delivered by the Brob Bards with skill, wit and panache!

Recorded six months after the raucous Mirror Man sessions, Strictly Personal is marred only by odd phase-shifting effects and the insertion of backwards tapes allegedly added by Beefheart's manager to make him sound closer to the "acid rock" trend then prevailing. Still, Beefheart's playful nature comes shining through. His stream-of-consciousness leads him to the Beatles' "Strawberry Fields Forever" during "Beatle Bones 'n' Smokin' Stones." "Ah Feel Like Ahcid" is Beefheart's trademark over-the-top Howlin' Wolf blues set three steps ahead. Drummer John French, in particular, gives Beefheart's music its listener-challenging edge, jumpcutting as the rhythm becomes familiar. That he gets weirder and fully realized from here is a testament to Beefheart's lifelong obsession with uncovering something new underneath the same old rock. --Rob O'Connor

Old Favorite.......2007-06-10
I had this album on vinyl years ago. I had been searching for it for a long time hoping that it would be on CD. I really did not remember too much about it only that I liked it. I know it has been criticized by others as being overcommercialized by it's producer, and that might be true, but I still like and enjoy this record very much. It was good to hear after so many years. Ooh la light, Ooh la dark.
Beware.......2006-08-04
Unless you are a devout captain beefheart fan, I suggest not getting this album. But instead just get SAFE AS MILK and MIRROR MAN, they have all the songs this has but better versions. As an album compared to all other music it is amazing, but compared to the captains other out put it is only sub-par. I dont feel like the psycedelic phazing gets in the way, its just that all but one of these songs appears on Safe As Milk and Mirror Man and those versions are much better.
Can't help myself.......2006-04-18
I love this album like a brother; it's my most poignant momento of the late 60s. For me, it captures the essence of that time, with its mind-blown style and roman-fleuve character, where every track tells a story, albeit a confusing one. The first three tracks are particularly compelling, in which rambling vocals and ragged guitar trade off each other in a way that would make Jagger and Richards weep, if they paid attention. (Oh yeah, I'm a Stones fan too.) But only the Good Captain invokes that Philip K. Dick world in which everything, including your sanity, is up for grabs. Damn, it's good.
A great album with a bizarre history..........2005-10-02
The history of Captain Beefheart and His Magic band fluctuates like a hyperactive echocardiogram. The personal, pointed, dissonant, and impassioned music confounded most record labels (and probably many listeners). Producers probably pondered and whacked thier heads with the question "how can I sell this stuff?" Nonetheless, they seemed to think that this music had market potential (otherwise they wouldnt've bothered at all). This perspective probably lies behind the strange, enigmatic, and now legendary story of "Strictly Personal", the band's second full-length album.
Somewhere between 1967 and 1968 Beefheart and His Magic Band struck out to do a double album magnum opus. The non-commercial project became foiled in record company politics and some other general nonsense. Consequently, the band fell out with their previous label, Buddha Records, over this very project (dubbed "It Comes to You In a Plain Brown Wrapper"). Buddha apparently began to focus on popular and more "happy" (or "bubblegum") music. And subsequently the band found their way to Liberty Records and producer Bob Krasnow.
The band had already recorded quite a bit of material for the failed double-album project. It sat moldering in Buddha's vaults for years (The 1999 CD releases of "Safe As Milk" and "Mirror Man" contain nearly all of this material - released, paradoxically, by the "new" Buddha records). With little rehearsal the band cranked out "Strictly Personal" in the spring of 1968. Much of the material overlapped with the aborted Buddha sessions. Notably, very shortened versions of "Mirror Man" (now called "Son of Mirror Man - Mere Man") and "Kandy Korn". The only new addition was the rough grunting blues number "Ah Feel Like Ahcid". Pieces of the song exist throughout the album. And the final notes of "Strictly Personal" come from a reprise of this song. Beefheart (aka Don Van Vliet) expressed confusion at the suggestion that the song was about "Acid" (a popular pop culture reference at the time). But it contains some greatly evocative Beefheart lyrics (and has some affinities with the later "China Pig").
Krasnow mixed the album while the band toured in 1968 and he subsequently added a mileu of "psychedelic" effects to the songs. Examples of this pervade the album. Supposedly he wanted the Magic Band to cash in on the "far out" music of the time. Some stories say Krasnow did this without the band's consent. Others say Beefheart actually approved of the new mix until the music press delivered consistent negative reviews of the production. Either way, a lot of the nuances of the music became buried in the thick mix or frosted over with psuedo-psychedelia. Consequently, more than any other Beefheart album (excluding his "Tragic Band" recordings from the mid 1970s), this album sounds the least like Beefheart. The album's title then becomes pregnant with irony.
It speaks volumes of the material on "Strictly Personal" that it remains a classic. The songs and the performances manage to shine through the rather annoying production. Mike Barnes, Beefheart biographer, calls "Strictly Personal" the band's "acid-rock statement". This gives too much credit to the production. Without Krasnow's layering the album would have sounded more like "Trout Mask Replica" than "The Piper At The Gates of Dawn". The re-released Buddha recordings (sans psychedelia) reveal this.
Some of Beefheart's strongest songs remain obscurely buried here. "Safe As Milk", the anti-hippie "Trust Us", the Trout Mask presage "On Tomorrow", and the song that cost the band John Lennon's approval, "Beatle Bones 'N' Smoking Stones". This album shows a definite progression from "Safe As Milk" towards "Trout Mask Replica" (which turned out to be a vindicating double-album release). Some of the innovations require work and digging to expose. But they exist down deep in the psychedelic stratifications of sludge. The effort pays off in droves. Beefheart begins to really emerge here, albeit slowly and somewhat frustratingly due to the mix. Still, Beefheart fans should not miss this album that comes with a history as murky as its production.
Flawed But, Again, Kind of Brilliant.......2001-07-21
He tried a more "personal" take on the blues here, and moved the rhythms out towards the kind of jazz-influenced polyrhythmic wildness that his bands kept working with for the next 14 years.
The songs and the lyrics are "authentically strange" as John Peel remarked in a documentary. To me they're idiosynchratic and somewhat flawed. They're just not coherent enough for my liking, and the music's a bit uneven - it has great stuff in there, but alternates into more straight, ostensibly commercially viable sections that drag this down a bit.
The production, the mixes are bad.
The better part of this material is available on the "I May Be Hungry But I Sure Ain't Weird" collection, which is alternate takes of these tracks plus a few more things from this time frame, and "Mirror Man" which was cut by the same band (originally to be bundled with this album in a 2-LP set) and has far superior versions of "Mirror Man" and "Kandy Korn". "I May Be Hungry" has been placed, in two pieces, on the new issues of "Safe As Milk" and "Mirror Man".
So, if you buy the new "Safe As Milk" and "Mirror Man", you'll hear all this material in equivalent or better form, except the opening acoustic track (which is just a basic blues) and the words to "On Tomorrow".
