Truly Inspiring.......2007-04-05
Funny thing is when i first heard this album, i wasnt a fan of it. so i put it aside and listened to other things for awhile. years later, i got bored one day so i find this cd and i pop it in the player....best CD ever. end of story. dont know what happened. maybe my musical tastes matured, or maybe all it took was a second chance, but this is by far my favorite maiden album along side NOTB. Every song on this album is a classic. this album is a best of maiden cd on its own. it might be a little more progressive than their earlier works, but hey Iron Maiden has always been ambitious and i think it surely pays off here. I might recommend other albums like NOTB or BNW for fans new to maiden to start off with though.
Maiden's Most Ambitious Album!!!!!!Their Best!!!!!!And The Greatest Metal Album Of All-Time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-03-07
Let me just say that no other Maiden album captures the spirit of the band as much as this one.Every album from The Number of The Beast to this one showed you the evolution of this band. All of them were stepping stones to this.Listen to those albums in succession then listen to this one and you will see what I mean. The idea of this album was to perfect the dualling guitars in a melodic way and if you ask me they did just that.Sure they have heavier albums but this one is the one that shows you what this band is all about. Those people out there saying that this album is pop-metal misinterpret this bad.The lyrics on this were their best from the 1980's.The album revolves around a child with clairvoyant powers but doesn't know whether to use them for good or evil. How about Bruce's performance on this one,it is by far his best vocal performance,he does some very angry howls but still has a very operatic approach on vocals just listen to those howls at the end of every verse on the album's epic Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son.He has never sounded this good in his career. This album is more moody than any of their releases in the 1980's.The album opens up with Moonchild a song about how Lucifer was plaguing the Seventh Son's mother, this one is old shool metal at its best,a great way to open the album.Infinite Dreams is about the idea of reincarnation and dreams that plague the Seventh Son's father, this one takes time to get used to but when you are used to it,it will become one of your favorite Maiden songs, this song has a very good instrumental section and some mesmerizing dualling guitars from the two gods themselves Dave and Adrian. Can I Play with Madness has Bruce at his finest with those soulful howls, this one is about the Seventh Son's father getting angry with a Prophet who will not tell him about his future. The Evil That Men Do is also Bruce at his finest, this song is probably about the Seventh Son's conception, this one can get a bit redundant but still a good song. Now we get to one of the best metal songs of all-time Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son.This is probably the best song of the album. The song is about the Seventh Son's birth and that anything he does will not change his life because it is already written and he can't do anything about it.This song has one of the best instrumental sections that the band has ever done,Dave and Adrian trading solos on this one is a thing of beauty. The final guitar licks are absolutely beautiful with some great snare drumming from Nicko and if you listen closely you can hear Steve play the bass like a madman, one of the best Maiden songs of All-Time.The Prophecy is a song about the Seventh Son warning a village of an impending disater and they do not listen to him and then let's see who is laughing now, this song has a very beautiful acoustic ending which takes you to a wonderful world that you would never want to end, a thing of beauty. The Clairvoyant is a moody rocker about how the visions of the Seventh Son are ruining his life and that he cannot take it anymore, the riffs on this one are scary in a way just listen to them and you will see what I mean, this also has one of the best choruses in the history of Heavy Metal"There is a time to live and a time to die when it's time to meet the maker,There is a time to live but isn't strange that as soon your born your dying".I mean that is some pretty deep stuff right there.Only The Good Die Young is about, well you guessed it the Seventh Son's death. This song is very underrated, behind the synth this is classic Maiden. The lyrics poke at Christianity(which to me is very, very Metal). The band ventures into the dark side on this album, that is why it is my favorite album by them.Everything about this album is right on the target. With this album you have to let your imagination run wild and then you will understand the power of it.This album is best heard altogether and at night. The Maiden sound is perfected on this landmark album.Up The Irons!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
CAN I PLAY WITH MADNESS???????????????.......2007-02-17
A must own album from Iron Maiden All the songs are the incredible best one of bruce dickenson's best.
Still The Best Album Of All-Time!!!!!.......2007-01-28
This is Iron Maiden's seventh studio album, and in my opinion the best heavy metal album of all-time.This album takes you into a magical world in which the Seventh Son tries to warn a village about a holocaust about to occur but they don't believe him.Later the village experiences the holocaust that the Seventh Son warned them about and they blame it all on him.You can hear this story in songs like The Prophecy(a very underrated song). This album includes classics like Infinite Dreams,The Evil That Men Do,Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son(song about the Seventh Son's birth),The Clairvoyant,is a song beyond words, you can't even describe it,just flatout wonderful!!!!.Don't forget songs like Moonchild(another very magical and very good song),Can I Play with Madness is a song that is just fun. This is my favorite album by Iron Maiden, thus the best album in heavy metal history and of all-time.Very innovative, original, and captivating.Just a flatout beautiful album. It makes me want to cry that this is better than life itself.I would give this 1000 stars if it was on a scale like that.Up The Irons!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The End of an Era.......2007-01-01
SSoaSS is probably the last really good album that Iron Maiden put out. There are a few weak cuts but, overall, the disc is solid. "Can I Play With Madness" is a Maiden classic. I hadn't listened to this for a decade; I had forgotten how good this disc is.

Album Description
The Velocity of Love is a Ciani classic, originally released on RCA and now on the artist's own label. The title song has become Ciani's signature composition and appears in many wedding music anthologies. A seminal work for the New Age Genre, it has sold over 200,00 copies. Composed, arranged, produced and performed by Ciani on an array of synths with special guest artist Vangelis.
Customer Reviews:
Fairly ordinary new age.......2005-07-12
I'm probably not the normal "new age" listener in that I despise the very notion of "background music": I'm an active listener and I don't think of music as ambient "noise" to have on while I read/watch TV/play video games/play cards, etc. When I choose to listen to music, I listen to it. That means I don't want something that meanders into oblivion and tends to induce boredom or day-dreaming. I want something that inspires feelings in me, be they melancholy sighs, bubbly smiles, tearful grieving, or visceral anger (in the case of hard rock/metal or punk).
In the end, this means that I usually favour strongly melodic new age over music that employs a lot of "noodling" over washes of synths. Music as "texture" is not my thing.
HIGHLIGHTS:
Ciani's music seems warmer when centered around her piano, with the synths just added for flavour. She wisely chose to title the album around "Velocity of Love", one of the better tracks here. (A synth "trumpet" takes a brief solo, then the theme returns to piano). A near martial feel characterizes "History of my Heart"..maybe meant to evoke the feel of the battles "fought" to gain control of it?
LOWS:
"Malibuzios" starts strong but flags in the middle before rebounding at the end. I think it simply runs too long at nearly 9 minutes without enough musical ideas. Had it been trimmed to 5 or 6 minutes with the best bits kept, we'd have a stronger tune.
BOTTOM LINE:
While there are moments of beauty here, much of this tends to wash into the background. It's not awful, but it's far from what I'd consider a high-water mark in new age or even in Ms. Ciani's music.
velocity of love.......2005-06-14
this was instantly a classic, from the first time i heard it
and it still takes my breath away
Space Age love songs.......2002-11-29
Suzanne has bridged classical and electronic music to create her most heartfelt release to date. Her delicate touch is used to it's greatest effect in these lilting love songs. On the title track, her most passionate playing is in full force. However, her sound is as expansive as it is passionate. The depth of her moods is conveyed through her phrasing of time and space in her harmonies and solos. She demonstrates her mastery not only on the piano, but on electronic instruments on tracks, "Lay down beside me" and "Malibuzios." Suzanne creates expansive moods while playing romantic melodies.
Brilliant. Perhaps her best work. Even today.......1999-02-23

Very relaxing music; great used as background music.......1998-07-21
This CD was one of the first new age music CD's that I bought. These songs have played in the background many-a-times while I do my physics homework both in undergraduate, and now in graduate school! Well worth purchasing, although I do tend to like the Wave Live! album from 1997 a bit better.

In the late 1980s, the "beautiful music" radio format came to an end when Philadelphia's Easy 101, WEAZ-FM, switched formats and call letters. It's a shame, because Suzanne Ciani's music would have been perfect there. She's a veteran keyboardist who started out composing avant-garde works on a keyboardless Buchla synthesizer. She went on to fortune as a commercial jingle writer and fame as an early New Age star. But over the years, Ciani has been plying a treacle-laced brand of instrumental music in which she wears her heart on a keyboard adorned with Hallmark valentine homilies. Though marketed as New Age, her faux-orchestral music shares more of a lineage with 101 Strings, with compositions full of orchestral sweep and gentle melodies that attain the sentimental but never the serene or the sublime. "Sargasso Sea," a duet with cellist Joe Hébert, suggests that Ciani can go a little deeper, and oboist Paul McCandless of Oregon almost pulls out "Wine Dark Sea." His beautiful multitracked oboe and English horn lines echo and intertwine with each other before he breaks out into solos. But tracks like "Dentecane" are swept overboard by Ciani's overwrought melodies and strings. If your idea of romance is candlelit dinners, moonlit walks, and a Mantovani soundtrack, take a trip on her Silver Ship. --John Diliberto

everyone evolves/but not everyone improves.......2007-06-08
I have been listening to Ms.Ciani for years now and I have come to the conclusion that the older material was more predictable and enjoyable. As time has gone by the music has drifted from relaxing piano instrumentals to CD's where certain songs are repeated on more than one CD to where the concept of "relaxing piano instrumentals" is abandoned for something else that just dosen't seem to work.If Ms. Ciani's older compositions were to be rated a 10,then Silver Ship is a 6.
First Ciani CD.......2007-03-14
This was the first Suzanne Ciani CD I purchased. I have been playing it almost nonstop since first putting it in my CD player. I just ordered two more of her CDs and if they are as nice as this one she will be on my list of most favorites along with Secret Garden.
Silver Ship an excellent New Age album.......2006-07-05
Who am I to contradict the great John Diliberto! John is the host of the NPR Echoes radio program. It is available by subsciption on the Internet. I recommend it. But he botched this review and gave no airplay to this fine album. In short, this album is not "easy listening". It is New Age all the way. In Silver Ship, Suzanne Cianni returns to her 1980's style with similar melodies and effects. It is less grand and a little softer. I believe it is a better album than her last two, Turning and Pianissimo III. Friends have positively commented on it when they heard it in my car stereo. The only problem with it is that the style does not break any new ground. She has returned to her best stuff. It is an insult to compare this album to easy listening. Going back to John's review, WEAZ should have converted from easy listening to New Age in 1983 when New Age was starting its popularity. The style was fading in popularity in 1989. But thankfully for New Age music fans like myself, there are lots of new albums to listen to in 2006. Silver Ship is one of them. By the way, I met Ms Cianni once and found her very personable.
Fabulous!.......2006-03-10
I've been a fan of Ciani for over fifteen years and I've yet to be disappointed. Her music matures from album to album in such a way that is unique, but not necessarily better than the previous album. Proof of this is her albums Pianisimo 1 and Pianisimo 3. Ten years apart from one another, both still remarkable, yet a maturity from one to the next.
Though Pianisimo 3 is still my favorite album, its only because of song #10, The Fifth Wave. Even after hearing it hundreds of times, it still has the ability to bring tears to my eyes.
Silver Ship is, in my opinion, her next step up from her album Turning. Turning was a remarkable album, combining her every talent and culminating it into one album. Silver Ship proceeds with this singular effort. A stunningly talented artist, you would do well to experience her music.
Silver Ship is Awesome.......2005-12-13
I have know Suzanne Ciani's music forever and this is the album
I've been waiting for for 5 years. Finally an all-new release. It is classic Ciani- taking me inward and outward through so many feelings- joy and sadness and all sorts of
vulnerabilities. The sound quality is pristine and the playing and arrangements are
just gorgeous. Sargasso Sea just makes me weep and Capri makes me dance. Love it all.

Customer Reviews:
Acoustic Persistence.......2004-06-09
After the success of Suzanne Ciani's first acoustic piano album 'Pianissimo,' it's no surprise that she would venture into the world of hammers and strings again. Nor is it any surprise that her second album is just as pleasurable as the first. Ostensible created out of previous electronic pieces dating as far back as 1983 (The Velocity of Love) most of the work comes from the 1990's - as late as 1996 Princess, Etude, and Timeless). This gives the listener an opportunity to see how the acoustic side of this musician has matured, and how it has affected her overall work.
Frankly, I like Ciani better as an acoustic performer. The underlying percussive nature of the natural piano lends her a definition that is sometimes lacking in her electronic work. As much as people might argue with me, I believe that control is more of an issue with electronic composition and performance than it is with an acoustic instrument. The latter is beautiful 'in spite' of its limitations, the former can hypnotize the artist with its textures, diluting the melodic content. Compare, for instance, the original Velocity of Love with the version presented here. While the two versions are both pianistic, the original is a bit more diffuse even thought it is more orchestrated. Both are beautiful though.
Ciani has a native melodic skill that produced consistently affecting work. As I've mentioned before, her music is more intimate and less bravura than other, equally good pianists. Not that she isn't capable of moments of dazzling performance (Andalusian Dream), but her niche is really the song, and not the singer (Go Gently, and Bel Canto). I've been listening to this album for several weeks now, postponing reviewing it to listen 'one more time,' and it refuses to get tiresome.
I never did manage to get the included multimedia track to work on either my Mac or my PC's, which is probably my fault. But as I've said, it isn't why I bought the album. I bought it for the music, and there is plenty of that.
5 star music hindered by 2 star playing.......2000-02-04
I love Suzanne Ciani's music. Her compositions are wonderful. Saddly her piano playing does not do them justice. I have listened to this album many, many times, thinking that I was being to harsh in my judgment, but I always arrive at the same conclusion. Suzanne bangs the keys. Sometimes she bangs them softly. Mostly she bangs them loudly. She plays the correct notes at the correct time, but there is no art. All of the finer points of playing are missing. I much prefer "Dream Suite", "Turning" and "Suzannne Live" in which she can bang to her heart's content, since most of the melody is carried by other instruments. Maybe someday a gifted piano player will do these compositions justice.
One Foot in Heaven.......1999-11-26
Suzanne Ciani has one foot in heaven. She's my favorite 20th century musician. Her music evokes romance, sweetness, eroticism, heaven, serenity; you name it; her music evokes it. Genius!
Beautiful music by a talented composer.......1999-09-15
I first heard about Suzanne Ciani from the Romantic Piano website (members.xoom.com/sims_music/piano/). I fell in love with her melodies. The difference that seperates her from other "New Age" composers such as Jim Brickman and Yanni, is that the form in her music is very tight. Her music does not sound like improvisations at all. One could walk away from one of her concerts and remember each song, while this is hard at other concerts where all the music sounds the same. Bravo to Ciani for giving us an escape from all the other terrible piano music out there.
Truly a Timeless Recording!.......1999-05-20
Suzanne Ciani's music have always set the mood for any occasion. This album is no exception. In Pianissimo II, Suzanne performs her favorite songs on a concert grand piano at George Lucas's Skywalker Studio. She also has three new songs on this album too.
The recording quality is superb along with Suzanne's liner notes on each song. Each song is very moving and if you really concentrate on each song, imagery comes into play.
For example, I listened to my favorite song "Timeless" located on Track 15. It made me think about looking at a photo album and watching my mom grow older (and wiser) through time. I sure that other listeners who bought this album with have many images that will blend with her songs.
Another neat addition to this album is the Computer Multimedia Enhancement track. Put this album in a Macintosh or Windows based PC and let Suzanne show you how the album was produced and meet her staff who helped made it possible. There are some other surprises too.
All in all, it's a great recording. Highly recommended.

An extraordinary CD for relaxation.......2005-08-14
This CD is one of my favorites for harp music and for relaxation. Behind Ms. Kelly's blissful music you will hear the gentle sound of oceanwaves. This CD is an effective aid for insomnia. I have given it to others who have used it effectively to reduce stress, anxiety and irritability in adults and children. While there are many artists who create music to ease stress or insomnia, this one is especially effective. Finally, although it appears that Ms Kelly's music is out of circulation, new CDs at very reasonable prices can be obtained online from Ms Kelly's website and I am shocked by the outrageous prices other vendors are asking for a used copy of this CD.
an unknown gift..........2002-11-23
I'm not really into this kind of music, but this harp music is very elusive and well crafted. The pieces sing to you and take you on a journey.

What a disappointment to discover that this recording is no longer available. I have had a cassette for the past 12 years and my fondness for the music has never waned. It is a wonderful collection, a prayer of sound.

Great Album - but many repeats........2003-04-24
Another enjoyable album by Suzanne Ciani. Unfortunately, I was disappointed to see many of the same songs that appear on so many of her albums. Some of these songs are in several albums I own already. It would be a great album for new Ciani fans. For old fans save your money.
from Solo Piano Publications.......2002-10-01
"Meditations" is a beautiful collection of fourteen of Suzanne Ciani's most peaceful and relaxing works, spanning her 20-year career and taken from ten of her masters. It is not intended as a "best of" collection in the usual sense, and is more of a thematic collection. The album is seamless, and the pieces work wonderfully together, creating a restful and soothing state in which to let the mind wander and perhaps drift off to sleep. Selections go as far back as "Seven Waves," Ciani's first major release (1982 in Japan, 1984 in the US) up through "Pianissimo III" in 2001. Ciani's early work was as a pioneer in the electronic music field, and "The Third Wave," "The Velocity of Love," "Lay Down Beside Me," "L'Azzurro," and "Lumiere" are from that era - it's so good to hear these pieces again! "Inverness" and "Go Gently" are also older pieces, but Ciani used the beautiful versions from her "Live" album with the Wave, updating them a bit. Most of the other pieces are from her solo piano "Pianissimo" albums and the combination of electronic and acoustic selections is fascinating. Suzanne Ciani has been one of my favorite artist/composers for many years, and this is an outstanding collection even if you have all of her earlier releases. Very highly recommended!

NOT MAIDENS BEST,BUT GREAT ALL THE SAME.IF YOU LIKE MAIDEN ,THIS IS ONE OF THEIR 5 BEST CDs OF ALL TIME. IVE BEEN LISTENING TO BRUCE DICKENSONS SOLO STUFF RECENTLY AND I CANT BELIEVE HOW GREAT IT IS. IT MAY BE BETTER THAN IRON MAIDEN,SO GIVE IT A TRY ALSO.
Seven deadly sins, seven ways to win.......2004-04-05
Well i'll start off by saying how surprised i was when i saw there were only 5 customer reviews for this album! i like to hear different people's opinions on cds and im sure im not alone.
But anyway, i would have to say that this is one of maidens best albums to date! And for so many reasons too.
The highlight tracks are Moonchild, Infinate Dreams, The Evil That Men Do, the title track and The Clarivoyant.(taht's almost all the tracks anyway)
I find that all maiden fans love Can i Play With Madness, but personally i find it to be a bit of a weak track, but anything by maiden is good.
I think the Prophecy is an underrated song. I didnt put it in the highlight tracks but its still an outstanding track, especially the combination of the synth and guitar at the start and finish.
As for Only the good Die Young, well i think it an average maiden song at most. I think its the repeditiveness of the chorus that puts people off.
Now to the good songs.
The opening track Moonchild is great. And the way that album starts and end with the 'seven deadly sins....' thing is genius and it give the album a real theme.
Infinate dreams starts off soft and you get to hear the softer side of bruce's voice and then it plunger into yet anohter masterpeice.
For a long time i just couldn't get over the track the Evil That Men Do. It is a true classic, and sometimes underrated.
Now for the epic 10 minute title track. This is another amazing track. It gives you some background about the seventh son myth too, even though i still dont understand it too well, something about a clarivoyant who forsees disaster and noone believes him and i dont see where the whole seventh son thing fits in (if you know plaese email me at metal_mayhem01@hotmail.com)
Ahh the Clarivoyant. I especially like the chorus to this song, you can hear the agression in bruce's voice. Now that's music.
So in conclusion i highly reccomend this masterpiece of an album as well as most of maidens other stuff. now go out there and headbang your ass off!
The Last in a String of Great Maiden Albums of the '80s.......2003-02-14
I remember when this album first came out. I had just become a huge Maiden fan after the previous record Somewhere In Time. By this time, I had bought their back catalogue of studio albums and
was swept up by the hype surrounding the release of Seventh Son. I remember Bruce Dickinson being interviewed on MTV's Headbanger's Ball and stating this album would be "quite popular to people who have never seen this band before" because it was the best album they had made to date and it was going to take Maiden in new, exciting directions. Then I saw the video for "Can I Play With Madness," and that whetted my appetite even more (O.K., many fans at the time thought the song was too commercial, but it is still awesome and one of their best singles ever!). I recall bugging the record store clerks many times with "Have you got the new Iron Maiden album in yet?" I don't think I have ever been so excited about an album release before or since! When I finally bought it (I wanted it on cassette, but the store was out so I opted for yes, you guessed it, VINYL because I couldn't wait), I think I was slightly disappointed at first.
My expectations were a bit too high. But the more I played it, the more I liked it. When I listen to it now, after all this time, I can really appreciate the genius of it. A true conceptual album about a child born with clairvoyant powers (the seventh son of a seventh son), who did not want to be born this way and has problems dealing with the strange circumstances he finds himself in as well as the forces of good and evil battling for his soul. The music is brilliant, with accoustical guitar, keyboards and other additions to transform Maiden's sound. In retrospect, Seventh Son was the last great Maiden album. Instead of being a stepping stone to more Maiden innovations, it proved to be Maiden's peak. Things seemed to go down hill after this record, with Adrian Smith and, later, Dickinson leaving to work on their own projects. I still only have this album on vinyl. My record has an Eddie illustration on the round sticker of one of the sides and the song list on the other side (a little annoying when looking for a track). The inner sleeve has lyrics and a small photo of the band on one side and a full page illustration of Eddie at a desk writing in book with a sphere in front showing the significance of his birth. The back cover of the album has an ice scene with Eddie figures as icebergs.
SEVENTH REVIEW OF A SEVENTH REVIEW.......2002-08-11
THIS IS DEFINITELY THE BEST MAIDEN ALBUM AND HERE IS THE PROOF:MOONCHILD,INFINITE DREAMS,CAN I PLAY WITH MADNESS,THE EVIL THAT MEN DO,SEVENTH SON OF A SEVENTH SON,THE PROPHECY,THE CLAIRVOYANT AND ONLY THE GOOD DIE YOUNG.IT'S A TRACKLIST BUT IT COULD EASILY BE A SETLIST FOR A CONCERT.THIS IS MORE PROGRESSIVE THAN THE OTHER RECORDS AND FULL OF EMOTIONS.IF ANYONE WANT TO BYE ONLY ONE RECORD OF MAIDEN THIS COULD BE THE ONE.
UP THE IRONS!
Maiden's first concept album ........2002-04-10
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son was Maiden's first concept album, and it rocks. Every song is great except Moonchild and Prophecy. The title track is really eerie sound to it, especially in the middle of the song. My favorites off the album are as follows: Can I Play with Madness, The Evil That Men Do, The Clairvoyant, and the awesome Only the Good Die Young. Dave and Adrian the great guitar duo, play some of their best guitar work on here. And Bruce's voice never sounded better. If you are a Maiden fan this a must have, or if you just like really good 80's Heavy Metal than this is also a must have. UP THE IRONS

Third Times The Charm.......2005-06-30
I remember my surprise on hearing the first album in Ciani's Pianissimo series. I had her so identified with the things I didn't like about electronic music that her ability and musicality on the acoustic piano simply blew me away. Two albums in this series later I can still say that Ciani is one of the best light jazz / new age pianists in the business. Something that I cannot say about her synthesizer work. Go figure.
For some reason Pianissimo III did not initially grab me the way the first two albums did. Perhaps because a few of the pieces in mid-album are a bit mechanical and awkward. But the more I listen to If I Could and Pretend the more I realize that this album contains some of her best work. The kind of music that stands up to repeated listening and never fails to create satifying trains of thought in my often harried mind.
Ciani has a very fine playing style - clean yet complex. Her classical musicianship is always lurking just below the surface. Technical brlilliance coupled with a fine melodic sense is what it takes to make the grade for a player/composer. Listen carefully to the improvisation work laced through Celtic Nights and you'll see what I mean.
Musical Soulmates.......2004-09-30
I absolutely love this woman's music. I have always been a fan since her early days in the 80's when she wrote the music for "bull in a china shop" commercial, to creating the sexy voice/music for a popular pinball arcade game. The very fact that she realized early on how much of an impact her music can have when performed acoustically, says so much about her. All 3 of her Pianissimo cd's have been gifts to her fans. I love how she can pack so much emotion in just a couple notes..... and reveal to us the soundtrack of her life. I luv ya Suzanne and can't wait till Pianissimo 4.
Touching and lovely.......2003-01-25
I wrote a letter of thanks to Suzanne Ciani after listening to this album. I have been a fan for more than ten years and was surprised when she actually wrote me back! I mentioned in my letter that as long as she keeps playing, I will keep listening. She informed me that as long as I keep listening, she would keep playing. What an astoundingly talented artist! Not only does she love what she does, but she loves her fans as well.
As far as a review goes for this album...remarkable!
Listen with patience..........2001-12-21
Why? When I first got the album, after playing it, I was going to place it with the other CDs that have been collecting dust for the past few years. BUT BUT...
After refusing to give up, I listen it a second, then a third time. It's music slowly creeps into your heart like a gentle blowing wind.
It's a great album for those seeking for comfort and serenity in an album. Try tracks "If I Could", "Pretend" & "I Believe in Love".
Suzanne Caini can be considered a great talent in her own right. Try her other albumns like "*Hotel Luna", "*Pianissino 1", "Pianissino 2", "Dream Suite" & "*The Private Music of Suzanne Ciani". I highly recommend getting those marked with a * first as they're hard to find (seems her previous recording company has stop re-producing these albums).
from Solo Piano Publications.......2001-11-14
"Pianissimo III" is the third in a series of albums by Suzanne Ciani which are made up of solo piano versions of previously recorded and orchestrated music as well as several (in this case three) new pieces. "P3" contains some of my all-time favorite Ciani pieces such as "Sogno Agitato", "Butterflies", "Turning", "The Fifth Wave", and "Full Moon Sonata" - all of these are wonderful! Of the three new pieces, "Celtic Nights" is by far my favorite. There are classic Ciani touches, but this piece is a departure for her, at least for her solo piano work. It is exotic, very minor, and has some haunting deep bass accents that give it some punch. "Celtic Nights" makes my fingers itch since it is one of the few pieces in the collection that isn't in print (yet). I love it! "Pretend" is a sad song about the "afterimage of someone gone". It is easy to imagine Suzanne sitting at her piano late at night, letting this song be born of recent loss. While not wrenching, the emotions are powerful. "4 O'Clock in the Morning" is the third new piece, and tells about the exact time Ciani wakes up whenever something is bothering her. This piece is less structured and more abstract, and is a fascinating musical description of that time between sleep and tossing around, trying to let your mind settle back into restfulness.
An interesting little tidbit is that when Suzanne's "Dream Suite" album came out in 1994, I wrote to her to tell her how much I loved "Sogno Agitato" and how I hoped it would be in her next songbook. She patiently explained to me that she had written that piece as an orchestral work, and really couldn't see it as a solo piece at all. She did a workshop for my students not long after that, and I requested that she play "Sogno Agitato". She explained to the group that it wasn't written as a solo, but she would play what she had played with the orchestra. It was wonderful!!!! I bugged her several more times about wanting to be able to play that piece, and was absolutely delighted when she included it in her "Turning" songbook. It has gone on to become a favorite of my more advanced students, and it was a thrill to have one of my students play "Sogno Agitato" for Suzanne last fall.
A few of the other of the fifteen pieces in this collection are not what I would call all-time favorites. However, most of the songs are excellent, and some are great, so I strongly recommend "Pianissimo III"!

Just plain beautiful and relaxing.......2004-01-09
I ordered a few of her CD's upon Amazon's recommendation. I had never heard of her but liked the samples. Her CD's are some of my favorites to listen to at bedtime or when traveling for relaxation.
My Favorite Ciani CD.......2003-05-20
I first heard 'Andalusian Dream' on a late night edition of Steven Hill's Hearts of Space. I was so moved by it that as soon as the piece was over I immediately called the radio station in an attempt find out the name of the piece and the composer. Ms. Ciani's collaboration with the Young Russia Orchestra is absolutely gorgeous from beginning to end and has a richness to it that I haven't found on any of her other cd's. All of her music is beautiful but I'm hopeful that she will make another cd like this one soon. Dream Suite was my first encounter with Suzanne Ciani and it has made me and my family fans for life. I agree whole-heartedly with the reviewer from Michigan who said that you can listen to this cd over and over again and never tire of it. I know I never do.
Beautifully done........2002-03-21
I love this CD. I was looking for soft, easy music for my 6 month old to fall asleep with. I gave this one a chance and I am not disappointed. It is soothing and very relaxing. One of my favorite tracks is "Meeting Mozart". I am now a large Suzanne Ciani fan.
A Profound Gift.......2000-01-20
Suzanne Ciani has a profound gift as a composer, arranger, and performer. I believe this is her signature work. Her music is quiet, intimate, and deeply moving. She has combined the sweeping majesty of her piano with the classical strings and percussion of the Young Russia Orchestra to produce a symphony that evokes romance, reflection, and rapture.
The artist indicates the album is about transitions following a series of significant emotional events in her life. The events have clearly inspired her and appear to have served as the catalyst for her greatest musical achievement. My personal favorite, "Riding Heaven's Wave: Eulogy to a Surfer," is a piece that captures the hope, faith, and renewal that characterizes so much of her work. In contrast, "Sogno Agitato" is a more pensive and introspective work that adds depth and color to the album. This is new age music at its finest!
My favorite CD.......1999-08-27
I like classical, country, rock, folk, pop, blues, jazz, and new age. I have lots of CDs. I have music in my soul. I could have made it big at the Moscow Conservatory. Suzanne Ciani's "Dream Suite" is my most favorite CD; As close to heaven as anyone has ever approached with music. Best and Most Accessible System 7 to Date!.......2004-02-07
Compared to previous System 7 albums, this is the most lively and upbeat one, demonstrating a musical maturity that I'd equate with Underworld mk2. It's a blend of techno, ambient, and downtempo. Every track is a fresh discovery.
From the Deep Space of the Universe.......2003-11-15
A seer once told me. "Your ears might be too small to hear what a loved one has to say, but your soul is big enough. Listen without the pressure of having to judge. Tonight, the song of the universe is coursing through your veins". I saw System 7 earlier this year at the Rex. The vibrations emitting before, during and after proved that they both still had it in them to reach within my inner crystal, remove the dust and make it shine again. I thank them both very much for that early morning bliss.
I finally got off my ass and placed my order. Seventh Wave hath arrived... Three of the tracks I download from their site earlier in the year, High Plains Drifter, 7 O'clock, Soft Rain, which were just a tease for this thirsty body and mind. Seventh Wave- is the past, present and future of a mystical blend that is very delicious and refreshing for this body and mind. It's great to hear the strings singing once again and so well placed. It's great that you both kept and let some of the past glide in throughout these tracks. You both have set a course which I feel is just the beginning of another chapter in life once again.
Test drove this puppy through audio devices- the car, office, home surround sound system ( low, medium, and chase them out of the house levels), mobile unit with headset (while laying underneath some palm trees here) and now currently via the helm with several visual displays. I am one that feels vibrations and hear tunes flowing and growing within me head and body yet not knowing from where it comes but waiting patiently for their arrival to provide the bliss once again and this CD is one of them........... Which track is my favorite? All of them.... But, must say Steve; never cease to amaze me with the sound waves that emit from his strings. Miquette, I love how she gives that spice of past then snap me awake with the present and off we glo. But, Varkala, High Plains Drifter, and 7 O'clock, are the one especially to crank it up, flow and glo for as I type me head is nodding, swaying side to side, up on me toes, body just a shaking as their enlightenment fulfill my thirst.. I have listened to this CD now seven times and it just keeps emitting inwards and outwards and yes both have brought that smile upon me face again. Let's see what tomorrow brings......"Warp Factor 9"......ENGAGE....... Till our journey paths cross once again. Peace and Keep Zee Faith.
Back to form.......2002-08-16
At last, a new album from System 7. It's a few years since `Golden Section' and it seems that time has been spent wisely, reassessing the group's sound and approach. The drum'n'bass influence `Golden Section' didn't quite match the standards set by previous System 7 albums, so it's great to see a return to strength on this album.
First track `Manik Shamanik' is the best on the album. A lush intro followed by a smooth house beat which works into a warm, rhythm track. What is most evident on this album is a return to the 4/4 beat, the classic System 7 style. Some tracks are very hard trance songs, like `7 O`Clock`, not totally to my taste. Elsewhere is the beautiful, warm Balearic-esque sounding `Sal Del Mar', the stunning, calm, break beat song `The Abyss' and the closing track is another wonderful song, the soft piano house of `Chiringuito'.
But, on the whole, this is a welcome return for one of the most consistent and quality dance acts.
Point of entry.......2002-03-21
For my full review please take a look at the import version of "7th wave"!
The nearly 10-minute opener "Manik Shamanik" begins very relaxing with various layers of spacious synth sounds and mid-tempo beats, but as soon as Hillage throws in a threatening ebb-and-flow pattern of grinding guitar riffs while the rhythms choose a much harder path, the piece takes on an overwhelming, almost claustrophobic sonic energy seldom found in other System 7 releases. "High plains drifter", the first single off "7th wave" which also appears in several remixes on the accompanying 12" release, also follows this style and offers another relentless attack, with Hillage's guitar screeching in the background and struggling against the massive wall of up-tempo beats and bass drums. So please don't be fooled by the fairly uninteresting 30-second audio bits here: This is thumping, high-energy dance music and will certainly make you crank up the volume. Personally, I do not believe that there is any other techno act which will match the sheer impact of "Manik Shamanik" and "High plains drifter" in the near future - System 7 are just too good at their own game here. Another engaging track is "Varkala", which places its double-sequencer lines between droning bass punches and a whole battery of sound effects, of course featuring Hillage's anthemic riffs and some quite engaging melodies. My only complaint is that this album rarely reaches the earth-shaking drive of these three aforementioned tracks again as the remaining pieces are mostly fairly slow and sometimes generic "chill-out" numbers which all go on for two or three minutes too long. "Soft rain", the one and only collaboration on this album with a well-known outside artist (the other, "unknown", artist here is Bruno Catala, who once worked with Sabres Of Paradise and contributed some songwriting and production duties to "7th wave") is such an example; although it bears the unmistakable hallmark of Dr. LX Paterson's convoluted Orb-style production, there simply isn't much going on here musically or melodically. "The abyss" and "Chiringuito" offer some slowly developing ambient-house/trance soundscapes with pulsating beats and floating melodies, perhaps recalling the likes of Chicane and BT. Not quite innovative, though. In contrast, the 10 ½-minute "7 O'clock" is quite reminiscent of Hillage's '70s output because it captures a similar mood due to its Eastern-tinged samples, spiralling guitar lines, and Gong-style keyboards. Overall, although the entire album is not as intense as the first two tracks suggest, I still think that "7th wave" is System 7's best release so far - not as sophisticated as the "Fire + Water" set or as visionary as their debut, but definitely a bit more fun to listen to. A satisfying work for long-time fans and a quite good place for the newly interested to start, "7th wave" is just too good to be ignored. Also check out System 7's homepage... for further audio samples and information.
