Editorial Reviews

Whistler's self-titled debut sounds derivative at first, as elements of Frente!, the Cranberries, and early Everything but the Girl flash by the ears. But another listen reveals gently crafted, addictive pop tunes. The trio's harmonies on the opening cut, "If I Give You a Smile," unfold languidly under the sun of the song, collecting dew and getting shinier until the sunflower crescendo at song's end. The blending of acoustic instrumentation and the featherweight female vocals provide a good spine for Whistler's sound, which is both lotion smooth and drearily British in all of the right places. Pay special attention to the third cut, "Closing Time," a gorgeous piece of chamber pop. --Jason Josephes

Nearly essential for anyone interested in old-time music, Violin, Sing the Blues for Me may be quite simply the best single-disc anthology of the early 20th century black string-band movement available today. The emphasis here is on the bluesy fiddle playing heard between 1926 and 1949, but the music boasts reams of diverse styles and playing that is simply impossible to pigeonhole. Andrew Baxter milks his fiddle for all its plaintive worth against brother Jim's guitar on "K.C. Railroad Blues," the Mississippi Mud Steppers' "Alma Waltz" is as sublime as they come (perhaps the greatest side ever recorded to feature a banjo-mandolin), and there are plenty of other tracks featuring the now-forgotten wail of the blues violin. But the lively tunes steal the show here: the Mobile Strugglers's previously unissued "Memphis Blues" from 1949 is a classic breakdown; the Tennessee Chocolate Drops's "Vine Street Drag" (featuring the fast fiddling of Howard "Louie Bluie" Armstrong) showcases some true violin virtuosity; and the Memphis Jug Band's "Memphis Shakedown" is a tour de force of energy and great playing. Truth is, there's not a weak track here, and the copious liner notes will keep you busy long after the CD has played out. If you want to hear the roots of the blues, don't pass this disc up. --Jason Verlinde
Album Description
"A top-notch compilation of classic performances with superb booklet and photos as well. This is an essential album for anyone interested in blues or string band music." Terry Zwigoff - film director Art School Confidential, Bad Santa, Ghost World, Crumb, Louie Bluie - oldhatrecords.com/ZwigoffInt.html
The violin played a significant role in the early history of recorded blues, with its crying vibratos and sliding notes creating a dramatic and soulful sound. Violin, Sing The Blues For Me offers 24 tracks of this rare music, played by many of the greatest black fiddlers who recorded before mid-century. From the sophisticated style of Lonnie Johnson to the raw Delta blues of Henry Sims to the rollicking tunes of the Memphis Jug Band, these musicians demonstrate the depth and diversity of African-American fiddle music. Included are two early instrumentals by the multitalented Howard Armstrong, also known as "Louie Bluie," whose career in music spanned seven decades. This unique collection presents 73 minutes of vintage fiddle music carefully remastered from original 78rpm records. In addition to blues, the album contains country dances, rags and stomps, folk songs and medicine show music. The CD comes with a 32-page, full-color booklet with detailed history, complete discography, and a host of rare photographs and illustrations.

Customer Reviews:
Some not so pretty, but mostly Great. I want more from Old Hat!.......2006-07-27
Inspired by my recent review of Sam Ku West's cd of Hawaiian steel guitar from 1927 and '28, and his version of Memphis Blues contained therein, I decided I need to review this disc which contains a killer Memphis Blues by the Mobile Strugglers.
What you get here is a very fine collection of mostly pre-war fiddle musics, covering a wide range of styles and abilities. From the abysmal toned, a-rhythmic atrocity of Alma Waltz (the very rare bad track) by the Mississippi Mudsteppers at the low end of the spectrum, to the bluesy drawl of Broonzy's fiddle, all the way up to the utter brilliance of the great Lonnie Johnson.
Still, the lesser-knowns are what this is about. Sure the titles of this and the "Folks, He..." disc put the emphasis on violins/fiddles but the music doesn't stop there. There are some seriously great bands here. Full-on killin groove units that will have you dancing on the couch as you listen... Memphis Shakedown and the "train impersonation" song, Moore Girl, for example. I've always found the latter interesting because, at least in my experiences thus far, I'm more familiar with black train-sound songs being done with harmonica, while whites seem to favor fiddle trains. A very cool track.
Also though, for me, Frank Stokes' Right Now Blues and the Alabama Sheiks' Travelin Railroad Blues give this disc a more pensive, vulnerable feeling than the "Folks, He..." disc.
Lots of stylistic variety, lots of great songs and playing. Had I reviewed this when it first came out I'd have probably given it 5 stars, but with the subsequent release of "Folks, He..." I do have to say that the "Folks, He..." disc has a touch better sound. A little less muffled. When I listen to these 2 right in a row, I listen to this one a few clicks louder to make it sound as good.
My continued thanks to all the collectors out there who saved this stuff, and to labels like Old Hat who've allowed people like me to enjoy!
Stunning recordings, rare music.......2002-07-27
It's pretty amazing, this late in the folkloric/historic reissues game, to find a whole album's worth of "undiscovered" old-timey music that is of such a high caliber. Old Hat Records, a tiny North Carolina indie label, packs its discs with some of the best music in the style that you're ever likely to hear. (You might also want to check out the "Lost Provinces" and "Folks, He Sure Do Pull Some Bow" CDs...) This disc highlights a rare style of African-American fiddle music, featuring rare recordings by the bands that dotted the southern landscape 'way back when. These groups mixed stringband styles and jazzy jug-band blues and, not incidentally, made some of the catchiest music ever. In addition to great sound quality and great material, the CD is handsomely packaged; the insert booklets include some really cool archival photos, as well as extensive liner notes of the sort that have been woefully absent on similar recent reissue efforts.
An album to live with.......2001-10-25
This has rapidly become one of my favorite discs. Excellent selection of tracks, excellent transfers, excellent booklet. My only complaint would be that the text in the booklet is not in the same order as the tracks on the disk.
Great music - great supporting documentation.......2001-03-01
As early as colonial times, free and enslaved blacks were widely known for their virtuosity on the fiddle, so it was only natural that the instrument would eventually find a home in the blues...even though most people probably don't tend to think of it there. And that's the beauty of this CD. It contains samples of the blues and many of the traditions that preceded it: country dances, rags and stomps, folks songs and medicine show music, all lovingly remastered from early recordings to create 73 minutes of vintage fiddle music. The 32-page full-color booklet alone is worth the price. This is a must-have for any student of African American culture in general, or anyone who just enjoys good music.
Simply magnificent.......1999-07-16
I don't believe this release can be improved. The song selection is terrific from both a musical and historical perspective. Sound mastering is excellant. The notes, artwork and photographs were not an after thought. They are very well done. OLD HAT has now released two top notch volumes and I really hope there is a lot more in the pipe. This is a mandatory disc for all blues and old timey fans. About the only negative is the sad fact that it probably won't get out to a wider audience. A reissue done by people who love and respect this music. Just superb.

EXQUISITE ! DELIGHTFUL !.......2006-01-22
What a wonderful collection of excellently performed and acoustically marvelous music -- rousing, contemplative, romantic, cheery - some of which were the long-remembered and not-often-heard-now favorite songs of my childhood and youth.
Make sure you read the enclosure that is tucked away into the front cover of this CD -- written in 3 languages, it proides little-known informatin about some of these wonderful tunes and their composers, and the illustrations throught the booklet are also a very nice touch.
Listening to this CD can be an intoxicating experience - what delightful selections all on one CD! From Gershwin to Gould, from Anderson to Sousa and more - a lovely Broadway tune (from Carousel), and the old familiar Arkansas Traveler as well, (and even a little barking and whistling on "The Whistler and His Dog"!) this eclectic collection of pieces was artfully and unforgettably performed, much to my great enjoyment. Although this was the first time I ever heard the New London Orchestra perform, you can be sure that now I will look for other recordings of theirs. I also plan to buy another copy so I can play it in my cubicle (quietly when at work, but LOUDER when I am by myself -- hee hee!!).
What more can I say? I love this CD with its remarkable collection of songs!!!
Good for all collections.......2000-12-09
Well, here is an English orchestra recording pieces that some American orchestra should have done long ago. This is music to have fun with and much to my delight was a piece that I have only heard on a 10 inch LP. That is Sym 5 1/2 by Don Gillis. This is one of the best light pieces written in the 20th Century by an American, but sadly little performed. Buy it just for the Gillis piece and consider all the others as frosting on the cake. Take a break from Wagner and Glass and get this one and the three CD's of British Light Music. Just enjoy. Aloha..
A Disc that is a good time all by itself!.......1999-05-17
This recording is the kind that some American "Pops" Orchestras should be making. Most of these light classics are ones that the Boston Pops have recorded before, but I don't think have been done as well as Mr. Corp and the New London Orch., have done them. This disc is a real treat and I hope just the first of many. We as Americans need to rediscover our musical works.
An excellent compilation of light American classics.......1998-12-09
British composers are well known for writing for the "Proms" concerts that feature light symphonic fare. There is much less American music in the same vein as Eric Coates, Edward German and Ronald Quilter, but conductor Ronald Corp has unearthed some real treasures on this disc of mostly short, light pieces. Amazon's listing doesn't include two of the best selections on the disc, Richard Rogers' Carousel Waltz and Don Gillis entertaining Symphony 5 1/2, subtitled "Symphony for Fun." It's a real crowd pleaser, and the fine sound on the recording is a good match for the entertaining repertoire.

Real American--.......2006-12-25
Boy, is this a fun album! I bought it specifically for the Whistler and His Dog, one of those tunes that everyone has heard and can't identify. The rest of the album is just as much fun. This takes us back to a time when American music was optimistic and we weren't trying to be hoods in the hood. This was the time of the building of the Panama Canal and still annexing new States to the Union. Listen to the samples and see if you don't get a smile on your face from this upbeat and long-disappeared style of music. Exceptional sound quality on the CD is a bonus.

Must for your collection ~ and your childrens collection.......2003-09-23
What a wonderful introduction to classical music for your children this CD is. My children love it and I do too. We use it as bedtime music now (ages 4 & 7). However, if your children really tune in to the music it can be a bit unnerving in parts so we used to only listen to it at home or in the car......they had to gain a few years to become comfortable with it in the darkness of their rooms at night. Buy this!
Teddy Bears a Must-Listen!.......2000-09-06
This is the first CD by the New Columbian Brass Band I have ever purchased, and I can't wait to own them all. This virtuoso group is a joy to listen to. Owning this CD is a must for lovers of brass band/turn-of-the-century music. It's a delight!
The cat's meow!.......2000-05-16
Dorian Recordings should be given some kind of award for the most imaginative releases of not only great historical but great musical value.
(DOR-93201) features the New Columbian Brass Band under George Foreman playing 15 pieces written from 1900 to 1921 and inspired by animals.
So we have "The Teddy Bears Picnic," "A Morning in Noah's Ark," "The Two Little Bullfinches," "Turkey in the Straw," and even "Tiger Rag." The Noah's Ark number is replete with animal sounds by a guest expert and links up with an earlier Dorian release called "A Trip to Coney Island: Descriptive Overtures from America's Golden Age" (DOR-80153), which introduced me to a form of musical tone poem very popular around the turn of the century.
This is one of those rare recordings that will appeal to all age levels; and scholars will be delighted to note that "Turkey in the Straw" is actually a Humoresque for Clarinet. Also anyone who has ever seen barnyard chickens in any old Warner Brothers cartoon will have already heard "Chicken Reel." A very definite 5 star Grabbit.

Featured in Mojo Magazine (`the Greatest Albums of all Time'), this Enigmatic Blend of Folk, Pop and Psychedelia First Appeared in 1968. Overseen by Producer T-bone Burnett (Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello, Counting Crows and Others), It's a Neglected Classic that Makes Its Long-awaited CD Debut Here.
Customer Reviews:
A diamond in the rough.......2007-07-02
This is the premiere album (1968) from the group that eventually became Space Opera in the 1970's. Their early work was 'discovered' by MOJO magazine in 2000 and received a favorable review.
Influences on the band included the Byrds, the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Paul Butterfield and Mike Bloomfield. Their work, however, has a quality of its own.
Of particular interest are the songs "Ready to Move", "Viper" and "Live 'Til I Die".
With wonderful vocal harmonies and complex guitar work the end result on this album is worth adding to your collection of late 60's folk-rock (perhps it should be called art-rock) music.
Good.......2007-03-26
This baby was put on the map by MOJO magazine back in 2000; who rediscovered this forgotten and obscure late 60's Texas album.
This is T-Bone Burnette's band, which was also the backing band for The Legendary Stardust Cowboy (check him out). They later morphed into Space Opera (check them out)in the 70's.
The music is well written psychy folk rock influenced by Airplane/Byrds/Grape, and maybe even Youngbloods. Very folksy in harmonies and instrumentation with some very tasty electric guitar. There is a lowkey, and sometimes melancholic feel to the songs, but overall a good buy for those of you looking for classic late 60's rock.

A gem from a bygone era!.......2007-03-15
As far as I can research the orchestra as formed in 1978 by Mr. Anthony Godwin, bass clarinettist with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. He had inherited a complete library of theatre music dating from 1880 to 1930 and it's from this that their repetoire is mainly drawn. They try and re-create the sound and atmostphere of those early days by using instruments of that era. For instance on the song "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles" the soprano Linda Murray is accompanied by David Norton on the musical saw.
A most excellent CD recreating the 20' and 30's Golden Age. Highly recommended!

The first new music from Moondog, nee Louis Hardin, in more than 20 years, Sax Pax for A Sax is probably the best introduction to the work of this eccentric former street musician. A joyous outburst, Sax Pax touches on influences ranging from Miles Davis' groundbreaking "Birth of the Cool," sessions ("Dog Trot"), medieval motets ("Tout Suite No. 1 in F Major"), and bebop's harmonic innovations ("Bird's Lament" and "Present for the Prez"). There's even a male chorus showing up occasionally, sounding like they stepped out of a Busby Berkely musical as they jauntily sing the praises of Paris, New York, and London. But the music's precise counterpoint and buoyant inventiveness could only be Moondog; listen and be enthralled. --Steven Mirkin

JUST WONDERFUL! AND HIP TOO!!!.......2007-05-03
Great Americana! Hip! Just wonderful!
My one regret is that I didn't have a chance to book this in US before he died. There is a video of this btw.
another great one out of print.......2006-04-14
This is amazing. And no, it's not jazz. This is composed music, and it spits in the face of the academic axiom that concert music has to suck in order to be any good. Truly unique and truly listenable, why isn't this a best-seller?
Sax Choir Arrives.......2005-08-29
I grew up loving Boots Randolph, Ace Cannon, King Curtis, and Johnny and the Hurricanes. I was browsing through the net looking for something on Simon Haram(a well known current European classical Saxophonist) and stumbled on this Album. I have never heard anything like this. Its my music find of the year (I am an iPod addict). This is a Sax dectet (1 Sopranio, 2 Soprano, 2 Altos, 2 Tenors, 2 Baritones and Basses) and then they throw in drums, piano, and bass guitar. My ears feel massaged with sound. I will only quote some review from the net:"The dectet of saxophones plus piano and bass guitar that is London Saxophonic is staggering... sounded like an Arvo Pärt choir jamming with the Bulgarian National Assembly of Throat Singers, yes it was that good." The Independent -- Believe this!!
yes, oh yes, moondog is the best.......2002-08-29
this music was already in my head before I heard it. blocks of chords ascending and exploding in fugal fireworks, plus evocations of an imaginary jungle-jive Paris love affair. unbelievably soulful, funny, charming, surprising. you like moondog! you like moondog! buy moondog!
eccentric and top rate.......2000-01-05
Fun and crisp. "Paris" had us dancing in the living room and "Movts 1, 2, 3" are sweet lullabies. Highly recommended
