5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Just Cool!!!.......2006-07-11

This album is so much fun to listen to. I heard his second album first and you all know how sexy and sensually charged that one was. So, I was expecting that with this album. When I didn't get that with this album, I was really disappointed with it, so I put it away for a long while. Then, for some reason I pulled it out and gave it a listen. Man, I was wowed by this album. This album is sexy, fun, silly, just wonderful. Man, I'm glad that I bought this one. Too bad this album got overlooked by the masses cuz this is really a good record and has many treats all the way through. But, oh well...

5 out of 5 stars Cool.......2003-09-14

Pete Belasco's CD is one I recently discovered. For as good as it is, it's amazing that this is his only release. I described his sound as "what if Ramsey Lewis & Burt Bacharach joined the Beatles to form a jazz group." While Pete is certainly not the Beatles, this sound is unabashedly retro. The opener "All I Want" is a marvelous perky tune with Christian McBride's pulsing bass making a joyful noise. Another of my favorites is "Love Train" with Pete sounding like Smokey Robinson, "You'll be writing love letters in the middle of the night." "Thought it over and you & I should live together," Pete sings on "All in My in My Mind" with McBride's bass again setting a soft soul groove. "Dirty Deed" sounds incredibly like Belasco's piano was channeling Ramsey Lewis from the "Wade in the Water" era; it's one that'll have your head moving and your toe tapping at the same time. Belasco's songs, all of which he wrote, are melodic, soulful, and happy. This 1997 disc is a great blast from the past, one not to be missed. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Way fabu-who knew my husband was so groovy?.......2003-04-23

My husband heard Get it Together on WFUV in NYC-found the CD used on line and play it constantly. Every track is fantastic-it's positivly slinky. Plus the kids love to dance to it, too, (so I guess 5 year olds do have taste beyond Barney). But I, too, await more news from Mr. Belasco-especially a tour? Play it and they will come, Pete!

5 out of 5 stars A Lounge Stunner.......2002-03-21

I've had this CD since '98 and it's still on my playlist. The tunes have the kind of hooks that keep you hummin'. The jazz is on the light side, the vocals smooth as Michael Franks and cool as Miles on Kinda Blue. Pete, when do we get to hear some more?

5 out of 5 stars "Get it Together" truly has it all together........2002-01-24

I'd have to agree with all the listeners who previously reviewed this cd, as it didn't get nearly any of the recognition that it deserved; Although a NY jazz station gave "Love Train" a lot of airplay, which is what attracted me to the cd in the first place. The remainder of the cd is so infectiously "loungey", you just feel compelled to shake up that perfect martini and share it with your favorite squeeze. I can only hope Pete Belasco continues on with a follow-up. Anxiously awaiting -- jm

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.

If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."

Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings.......2005-10-05

This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.

5 out of 5 stars Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay..........2002-07-18

The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars He's done it again.......2002-07-15

Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.

This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.

Way to go Michael, you've done it again!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10

There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.

This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.

This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!
Bravo Rhino!

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful 2 disc CD-another hit for Michael.......2002-06-09

I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

5 out of 5 stars One of America's great songwriters.......2001-03-09

Amid the Cole Porters, Irving Berlins and George Gershwins of the world, Harold Arlen tends to be forgotten. And yet, when the greatest song of the 20th century was recently voted on by a distinguished panel of critics, whose song came out on top? Mr. Arlen's (Over the Rainbow). Here is a superb cross section of Harold Arlen songs by a cast ranging from Judy Garland to Bing Crosby to Ethel Waters, spanning decades and spanning a wide range of styles, from jazz to ballads, poignant to funny. Although the sound is not ideal, as many of the recordings date from the 30's and Pearl's objective in remastering has always been to achieve the fullest musical sound rather than to reduce surface noise, this is a minor complaint given the rich and mind-opening selection of great music found here.

Skywriter (1973) is the most rote of the 10 Jackson 5 albums on Motown. Even a growling clavinet on several tracks can't save the cleanly produced but bland songs, and the overall effect is of a half-price sale at Motown's publishing companies. At best, "The Boogie Man" is a dry run for Michael's "Thriller," and Shirley Partridge would've laughed "World of Sunshine" out of the room. Two soggily "inspirational" singles, "Corner of the Sky" and "Hallelujah Day," are perhaps the lowest points, though. Get It Together, from later in the year, shows far more spark. Aside from introducing "Dancing Machine," it offers a good line in extended workouts like "Mama I Gotta Brand New Thing (Don't Say No)" and a remake of the Temptations' "Hum Along and Dance" that Kurtis Blow's History of Rap cites as an early breakbeat classic. One of this CD's three bonus tracks, a rare version of the Holland-Dozier-Holland nugget "Love's Gone Bad," would've been the best thing on the original Skywriter, had it not gone straight into the vault. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars The Turning Point..........2005-10-19

Alot of reviewers have questioned this album, but that didn't stop me from buying the last double album/single cd set and adding it to my collection. But before I purchased this album,i heard a song on it called "I Can't Quit Your Love" and what suprised me the most about that song was Marlon Jackson's part in the bridge. So i had to get this album, and to my suprise,my boy Marlon had more parts. So i guess you can say i bought this set just to hear Marlon Jackson do some lead numbers. Let's review shall we. Skywriter was supposed to be the re-up album for the boys to go to the top of the charts again. Fortunately, they almost did with "I Can't Quit Your Love". This song has that signature disco drum pattern and Michael seems to be in rare form in this song as he "HA!" and "HO!!" in most of the song. Another single that got my attention was "Corner of the Sky",which i really can relate to and i love singing it. "Uppermost" is a pretty good song and i like how all five of the brothers sound eventhough it's Mike on lead vocals. The rest of the songs you all can jump over and go straight into another one of my favorite J5 songs,"Get It Together" (i fell in love with this song from the "Michael Jackson & The Jackson 5 18 Greatest Hits" album). Holding on to that same disco feeling, courtesy of the one and only Stevie Wonder, this particular song is a great way to start off an album...but soon afterwards, the brothers take it a level higher as they all take turns on "Hum Along and Dance". Pretty good and lenghty song, and it's nice to hear Jackie Jackson and Tito Jackson on this song. Right afterwards comes my top favorite song on the G.I.T. album,"Mama,Got A Brand New Thing (Don't Say No)". Once again, all of the brothers do their thing, but the biggest story here on this song is all of Marlon Jackson's parts - "First Class everywhere we go,just give me a chance to do my thing/[Chorus]/Got it burning down deep inside/I wanna see my face in ???/Just please please please, let me go!/I can see it now,Champaygne and cavier/A black limousine chauffered car/Trips all around the world/And I have my choice of any girl/[Michael,Jermaine,and Jackie sing]/Mom there ain't nothing that we can't buy/Have a little faith in me!!" that's my absolute favorite part of the song. That boy could sing!! -Ahem- anyway, after that song is over with,Michael jumps back into the driver's seat with another classic,"Too Late To Change The Time". A very good song with a good message to back it up. And then comes the one that started it all - Dancing Machine (the original is much better than the remix cause of the intro and the outro). This was the one song that I know how to do one of Michael's robot routines on (remember the rainbow color outfits they wore and Mike and Jermaine sporting permed-n-curled afros? hahaha!) After "Dancing Machine" comes "Pride And Joy" which is pretty good in my opinion and the final and best bonus cut out of the entire collection,"Love Is The Thing You Need",which is actually where Michael sounds his best at this point before the group records "All I Do Is Think Of You" from the Moving Violation album. Everyone says these two albums were their worst...survey says...[X]!!! Get some soul in your system and just dance along.

5 out of 5 stars The J-5's "brand new thing".......2005-08-21

SKYWRITER and GET IT TOGETHER are two albums that are as different as day and night. SKYWRITER still boasted some of the Jackson 5's "bubble gum" soul sound that made them famous, yet the boys were young men by early 1973. The music wasn't lacking in quality, but it seemed like Motown had put the brothers into a box with material about teeny-bopper love and the sort, and didn't want them to break out of it. Plus, that year, the solo careers of Michael and Jermaine were already underway, with older brother Jackie next to make a splash with his debut.

So SKYWRITER was recorded at a time when the brothers' popularity was starting to wane - they still had hits, but nothing like the explosive material that they recorded when they first arrived at Motown. You hear some songs that let you know that the guys are growing up and maturing, but then you're hit with others that want to remind you that they were once a kiddie group, so you could correctly call SKYWRITER the group's "growing pains" album. A lot of this material is kind of bland, very pop-oriented ("World of Sunshine", "Ooh, I'd Love To Be With You" for example). It's surprising that Motown let this happen to one of their most exciting and popular acts. The biggest hit from this album was a bouncy tune from a Motown-produced Broadway musical called "Pippin": "Corner of the Sky", which peaked at #9 (R&B) and #18 (Pop). The song wasn't bad - I used to love that song when I was a kid - but it obviously lacked the energy of those earlier J-5 hits. SKYWRITER does have some good moments, though: the title song; of course, "Corner of the Sky", "Touch", an excellent amd sensual remake of a Supremes song; "I Can't Quit Your Love", "Uppermost" and "You Made Me What I Am". But somehow, while you're listening, you get the feeling that the boys are itching to move past this stuff, and what was to follow was a must-needed change for them.

Enter the "brand new thing". GET IT TOGETHER is my favorite (and undeniably the better) of the two albums presented here - the five star rating is for THIS album. Released in late 1973, GIT brought the J-5 where they wanted and needed to be: leaving the bubble gum sound behind and into some really funky territory. With raw, extended dance tracks and exciting vocal arrangements, it kind of reminds you of the metamorphosis that the Temptations underwent in 1968 when they began their "psychedelic" phase with "Cloud Nine". And much like the Temptations during that time, you hear ALL of the Jacksons' vocals individually on various cuts.

The title song, the electrifying "Get It Together", opens the album and sets the tone for everything you hear throughout. "Don't Say Goodbye Again" and "It's Too Late To Change The Time" are the two ballads on this album, but there is a touch of funk to each of them, so they are not at all out of place. The other songs are all slickly produced R&B dance tracks that were just in time for the blossoming disco movement, and made to make you get up out of your seat! And they do!

Now Motown definitely was accused of recutting the same tunes in their catalog over and over again with different groups to milk it for all its worth, but in this case, it wasn't such a bad idea. The J-5 do four funky, high-octane versions of earlier Motown songs, three from Norman Whitfield/Barrett Strong's psychedelic catalog, the duo responsible for transforming the Temptations: the primal underground club classic "Hum Along and Dance" and "You Need Love Like I Do (Don't You)", the Undisputed Truth's "Mama I Gotta Brand New Thing" and an interesting retake of the Supremes' "Reflections". The massive #1 funk smash from 1974, "Dancing Machine", closes the album out, sparked a whole new dance craze, and put the Jackson 5 back on top where they belonged. If you didn't go off when you saw Michael do the Robot during the song's breakdown, you obviously didn't have a pulse!!!

You also get three bonus tracks from the vaults: "Pride and Joy", a funked up remake of the Marvin Gaye hit, but you hardly recognize it; "Love's Gone Bad", another remake of singer Chris Clark's song from the '60s that sounds like something the Four Tops should have recorded and "Love Is The Thing You Need", from JOYFUL JUKEBOX MUSIC (1976) (the final J-5 album that consisted of tracks that were in the vault and recorded sometime in 1972-73 at Motown but was not promoted).

The two albums that followed GIT (DANCING MACHINE - recycled again for that album - and MOVING VIOLATION) were the group's final offerings for Motown and both of them were heavily dance-oriented and ahead of their time. GIT blazed the trail for everything the Jacksons would do in later years. Pick this CD up and get your dance on!

      3 out of 5 stars A new J5: 4 Stars for GIT, 3 for Skywriter.......2004-12-18

The SKYWRITER/GET IT TOGETHER combo might as well be two different records by two different bands. SKYWRITER was the last of their bubble-gum kiddie pop, if not softened up a bit with the soft-rock influence of early 70s groups like Bread and The Carpenters. The title track is the only song that sounds somewhat right for its time, with its psychedelic harmonies and intense clavinet a'la Stevie Wonder. "I Can't Quit Your Love" almost fits in this vein, and is perhaps even more soulful and aggressive. The other highlights are the softer ballads and showtunes ("Touch," "Ooh, I'd Love To Be With You," and "Corner of the Sky"). Unfortunately, "Boogie Man" is terrible and almost out of Michael's vocal range at this point; "World of Sunshine" and "Hallelujah Day" seem like post-hippiedom, anti-Vietnam statements that don't sound right from these young'ns, although the songs themselves are decent. They could easily have been recorded by the Fifth Dimension circa 1968.
GET IT TOGETHER, on the other hand, is very surprsing. The first time I heard these songs, I couldn't believe that Motown let the J5 record such long, infectious funk grooves. Sure, some of them sound like Temptation replicas, but some perfectly combine the past J5 with the "new" J5 sound ("Don't Say Goodbye Again," "You Need Love Like I Do," "Mama I Got A Brand New Thing"). Others sound nothing like anything they'd ever done, and succeed marvelously in getting feet moving ("Get It Together," "Dancing Machine"). Despite an awkward cover of "Reflections," this album rocks. The bonus tracks here (and on other recent J5 compilations) show that much of the unreleased material from 1972-73 was much better than what was put on SKYWRITER. That album could have been a much bigger success if they put some of these funkier tracks on it instead of the lightweight fluff.

3 out of 5 stars Five stars for Get It Together, one for Skywriter.......2004-05-14

Bubblegum J5 songs were good when they were released, but not 30 years later. Adding that Skywriter was the worst (and luckily last) of J5 albums from that era, it is easy to hate this album right now.

But the following J5 release was a major change in the acoustic side. They started to do funk, and the result was quite good!

It's a pity G.I.T. hasn't been packed together with Moving Violation.

      5 out of 5 stars In Between Isn't Always A Bad Thing.......2003-06-26

These were aquared times for the J5 for sure. The majority
of the band members are teenagers and young men now and all of
their voices are adult ones-notably Michael, who as heard on "Skywriter" is losing his baby voice. The quasi-pop/gospel of
"Hallelujah Day" shows this in fine effect. The tital track of the
first record makes wonderful use of the Leslie amp over Jermaine's closing vocal and the ballads "Uppermost","Ooh,I'd Love To Be With You" and covers of the Supremes "Touch" and the
broadway hit "Corner Of The Sky" indicated The Jackson's might have a future in producing romantic slow grooves. Then comes
"Get It Together",a startling dance-funk record whose clavinet-
driven,Wonder-esqe tital song shows off Michael's fully matured
voice to full effect.Funkified covers of Gladys Knight & The
Pips "You Love Me Like I Do (Don't you)" and a snarling hard rock
take on the Temp's "Hum Along And Dance" are major highlites.
One piece of note is an intruiging piece of reggae/soul in
Michael's "It's Too Late to Change The Time" indicates a sincere
respect and understanding of all music in the world. And to conclude the affair is the unforgettable "Dancing Machine",here in it's complete version with robot sound effects and intro. Most
songs on "GIT" segue and feature very different instrumental
accompanyment then past J5 numbers.Unfortunately neither of these
records were big chart successes but musically they have very
strong vertues and deserve alot more respect and recognition then
      time or statistics let on.

5 out of 5 stars An absolute classic!.......2005-11-28

"Get It Together" became the first in a string of four consecutive #1 hits on the Billboard Dance/Club chart for Seal. This song stands out as a classic club track now - one of the biggest of 2003.

For me, these are the two standout mixes:

      2 - Peter Rauhofer's Classic Club Mix
      4 - Bill Hamel's Vocal Mix

Peter Rauhofer's mix sounds exactly how its titled. A classic mix with a distinctive mid-'90s-flavor to it, a perfect fit for Seal since that's when he got his start. Its straight-up, standard house, and one of the best mixes Rauhofer has done in the last few years.

Bill Hamel's mix is truly outstanding. His mix takes on a more ethereal, atmospheric feel, punctuated in the middle with an acoustic guitar solo break. In my opinion, this is Bill Hamel's best mix of any song to date.

The mixes really raise the bar on the tepid original production and bring this song to life. The combination of positive, uplifting lyrics, amazing vocals, and great beats make this a can't miss release from Seal. I swear this man has got to be one of the most underrated musicians of all time.

      5 out of 5 stars Rock Solid.......2004-08-12

These remixes are absolutely rock solid. The Bill Hamel remix is particularly strong. Of course none of it would work if Seal hadn't furnished such excellent source material.

Now what could possibly be better? Sweating and inspiration at the same time?

3 out of 5 stars Lost Boys Radio Edit.......2004-04-09

I enjoyed listening to the track very much. An uplifting track with positive message, without being preachy. For one of the feedbacks, it seems that this edition of the CD Single differs from the Australian edition by the first track.

On the Australian edition, all the tracks are the same, except for the first, which is the Lost Boys Radio Edit (instead of the Album version), which is the more danceable version featured on the music video.

Apparently, this Lost Boys Radio Edit version is also available on another edition of the CD Single on Amazon.com, Get It Together Pt. 1 CD Single. Personally, I prefer the Lost Boys remix rather than the album version. :)

5 out of 5 stars The 6th cut of this release makes this a MUST have!.......2004-02-10

In recent years I've curtailed my purchases of maxi-singles due to increasing prices and diminishing returns as many times remixes include the original version, and maybe (if you are lucky) 2 mixes presented as 4, as I can't count the number of times that I've seen and/bought remixes only to see that several mixes are only longer or shorter versions of the same thing. That is not the case in this maxi-single as it has the original version and, count them, 5 additional and fully distinct remixes.
Although I like all the version, among my favorites is Roy's Soldiers of Universal Love Remix (these names are getting a little long), which begins with a great disco beat with harps and bongos in the mix as well as 1970's recording touches as well as a riff that reminds me of The O'Jays "Backstabbers." Seal's voice is out front and as strong as it is in the original cut. It clocks in at 7:28 but does not feel like it goes on too long like so of the lesser remixes out there. I also like the Wide Horizon Remix as it starts out very aggressively, has some interesting echoes, quiet moments, and a subtle 1980s Janet Jackson "Rhythm Nation" vibe which comes and goes several times during the mix. Although it's not as amazing as the aforementioned mix, it is addictive. The other 3 mixes, which should not be lumped together as they are different, do have in common that they sound less retro than the original and have very strong elements of house.

It's hard to recommend these to people who don't make their own mixes as it can be annoying to hear different versions of the same song in one sitting. But since I do love to make my own personalized CDs, this will certainly be in my next mix along with Annie's Lennox's "A Thousand Beautiful Things" remix off the "Wonderful" Maxi-Single. Maybe this is a renaissance of sorts for maxi-singles, but being the skeptic that I am, I see what happens. Also, piggy-backing on another reviewers comments, it would be amazing if Amazon.com would include samples of this type of product as they may not only help us make better decisions, but sales could rise too. Just some food for thought. Thanks to all Amazon.com reviewers as you guys have been responsible for some of my greatest purchases and my reviews are my attempts to give back to you as much as you give me.

      5 out of 5 stars #2 Dance Song from 2003 per Billboard.......2004-01-04

I really wish that Amazon would put sound samples of singles on their website. This is an incredible single. The Bill Hamel mix is worth the price of admission alone - absolutely scorching. This song was listed as Billboard's Dance Music / Club play #2 song for 2003.

While the song does state: "Pray to God or something... or whatever you do", this is not a preaching song. It is a plea for unity to "keep this world together". A positive message, and a powerful song.

This is predominantly a dance single, with a chillout mix included - if you do not like dance music, this is probably not for you. The Superchumbo mix is tribal. The Bill Hamel mix is progressive house, and reminds me of Nalin & Kane's work, only updated with crisp studio production. If I had to choose one single to have for 2003, this is this one.

Bought one of these Italian remakes on an auction site for $30, shouldn't have paid more than $3 for it. It is not remastered and the quality of the audio is the worst I've ever heard on a CD. To sum it up, TERRIBLE. I've learned there is another version of this CD which IS digitally remastered and includes five bonus tracks. It's a bit hard to find but worth the hunt.

      5 out of 5 stars A FUN BALLET WITH QUITE A HISTORY!.......2000-01-30

It can be said that La Sylphide (Sylfiden as the Danes call it, was premiered by the Royal Danish Ballet in 1836), composed by Herman Severin Lovenskiold and choreographed by Bournonville, is the earliest piece of ballet music from the Romantic period that has been recorded. However, an ealier version of the same ballet by a different composer (Schneitzhoeffer)--no recordings--and choreographer has been revived by the Paris Ballet (Who knows how faithful it is to the original!). La Sylphide is a story about a female spirit, called the Sylphide, who falls in love with a young man; he too falls in love with her. But the little courtship is to be cut short by a witch. The fairy tale ends with the death of the Sylphide. The star ballerina of the first version of La Sylphide was Marie Taglioni, who was forever associated with the beginning of the Romantic ballet. Now we come to the version recorded on this CD. First, a little history. After the Danish choreographer, August Bournonville, saw Marie Taglioni dance in the role of the Sylphide at the Paris Opera, he wanted to stage his own production of the ballet. But first, he had to purchase the rights for using the score (by Schneitzhoeffer), but to his disappointment, it was too expensive. Consequently, he decided to have entirely new music written. And the man to accomplish this was Lovenskiold. So successful was this second version that the complete Bournonville choreography along with Lovenskiold's score are still used today by the Royal Danish Ballet. This is a superb "complete" performance by the Danish Radio Sinfoniette. The sound is clear and rich! Damgaard who has been the chief conductor at the Royal Danish Theatre since 1990 conducts beautifully. Under his baton, the orchestra makes the music sound alive and poignant. For those who are interested in ballets or just a great fairy tale, I highly recommend they get this CD. The only alternative recording is the one on Chandos, performed by the Royal Danish Orchestra (conducted by Garforth). It is also excellently performed (Read my review for that recording!). That CD contains an extra number (a pas de deux, which is not ever played as part of the complete ballet), which is a delight to hear! The CPO version, however, contains James' Act 1 solo, which is not in the Chandos recording. If you're a completist, get both!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent recording of Lovenskiold 's Ballet.......1999-10-26

It is a beatiful recording of the first romantic ballet, who has a precursor on Taglioni's Sylphide (which can be appreciate on video recording by Ghislene Thesmar interpretation with the corps of Opera Paris Ballet, music by Scheneihoffer, available at amazon.com). The perfomance of Lovenskiold partiture by the Danish Radio Simfonieta conducted by Daamgaardt is perfect, without affectation and it reach the maximum climax on second act. I bought this record because I listen on the radio the overture and the introduction of the first act, which inmediately decided me to find out and bought this version. There is only a criticism to the booknote which is included on the CD. Taglioni 's Sylphide has been succesfull performed in our century, on the seventies by a reconstruction taken on by Pierre Lacotte and interpreted by Ghislaine Thesmar. Teatro Colon of Buenos Aires offer this version on 1974 on stage and it was suscefull received at Argentine and many great Argentine Ballerinas interpreted the beautiful role of the light Sylphide.
