We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.

Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.

When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.

Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

This recording sounds less like the Boston Pops and more like 101 Strings. (That's not a compliment.) In fact, I know there are better performances of each one out there. These are actually all pleasant, familiar pieces which I like. I'm not at all sure they should all be on the same album. If you want background music while you're reading, or making love, this is perfect. If you're driving late at night and trying to stay awake, not so good! In short, the sum is less than the total of its parts. But I'm giving it a 3, because I do like most of the individual pieces, and I never give more than 4.

I have both disc in the series. I liked the music on this disc much more than the first. The selections seem more focused and the sounds are much clearer. Also, the particular pieces fit better together. I love the sound of this group and hope they make more in the future.

This is by the same group who did the wonderful & engaging Early American Choral Music 1. Somehow this CD did not live up to its predecessor in some ways. The performance is still top notch, but somehow the CD as a whole isn't quite as engaging to listen to as the first. Perhaps version 2's strength is also its weakness. Its diversity of composers allows you to pear past the shadow of William Billings and sample other notable early American hymn writers. That exposure is valuable & appreciated. I just couldn't get into it as much.

A final note: many of the texts are beautiful (and available from the publisher's web site). However, I would criticize "Who is this that cometh from Edom?" as dwelling just a bit too much on the Jews' rejection of Jesus. Among other reasons & issues, Christianity says that we are all sinners & there is no cause to single a particular group out negatively.

Please note this CD is a duplicate of His Majestie's Clerkes's "Goostly Psalmes: Anglo-American Psalmody 1550-1800" -- identical contents but a different name and cover. I ordered both and was irritated to discover this. This CD is cheaper, so I recommend this one. It is a lovely choral work from a little-known period of sacred music.

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra never ceased to amaze me with their vibrant and versatility in intrepreting the instrumental versions of the classics..I like the classic Clint Eastwood western "fistful of dollars"...melodic sounds of "never on sunday" and don't forget the really western classics of them all.."high noon" (do not forsake me)...very very nice.buy one today.

    I'm a HUGE Mantovani fan and have had mixed results trying to upgrade my collection to CDs. This collection is the original orchestra arrangements of all the classics. This is the one to buy.

    The Mantovanti Orchestra shows off their "marvelous versatility" in this "wonderful" collection of "8 CDs", with titles that tell you "just what to expect", such as: "The Love Songs", "Memorable Classics", "Itallian Favorites", "On Broadway", etc. You can set the MOOD for practically ANY occassion! There are even some "popular" selections that we all know and treasure like: "Moon River", "Over the Rainbow" and "Autum Leaves"!
    You will NOT want to remove these GREAT CDs from your CD Player, once you have listened to them! They make "nice" background music for small get-togethers or "lovely" background music for those "ROMANTIC DINNERS", for you and your "SPECIAL SOMEONE"!!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS SET!!! It is a GREAT DEAL for the money, even at the full price!!!

    I'm not a Classical Music expert, but I found "American Classics" to be a very good collection of great 20th century American Classical musical numbers. The bulk of the selections were composed by Leonard Bernstein. However, other composers such as John Kander, Max Steiner, Aaron Copland, Stephen Sondheim, Henry Mancini, and John Williams are also included on this collection. All of the selections are performed by the legendary John Williams and the Boston Pops Orchestra. Williams is probably the top Classical Music conductor around today. His name is synonymous with many movie soundtracks, but on this collection we get to hear John Williams do what he does best - conduct the Boston Pops orchestra.

    As mentioned, this focuses on American Music. Your not going hear Beethoven, Chopin, or Mozart here. For the most part, this is Williams and the Boston Pops Orchestra performing Leonard Bernstein (a great conductor in his own right). The music is grouped logically and by composer. Some of the music will be familiar to you and some of it might not be as familiar. You'll hear the theme from "The Pink Panther" (Mancini) as well as the theme from "Gone with the Wind" (Steiner). There is a riviting instrumental version of "New York New York" (i.e. Start Spreading the News...) that will make the Chairman of the Board, Frank Sinatra proud. Another popular selection is Aaron Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man" - this is heard around Summer Olympics time quite a bit, but possibly not know by its actual name.

    There are three tracks from the famous Bernstein musical "On the Town" and they are grouped together. These selections are among the best that are included in the collection. The first is "The Great Lover", the second is "Lonely Town: Pas de deux", and the third is an instrumental version the famous "Times Square: 1944" (i.e. New York New York, it's a hell of a town...). The "Times Square" melody I believe is the part in "On the Town" when the sailors go dancing in Times Square. Hearing this selection as an instrumental gives it a whole new dimension. There is also a nice reprise of this in Bernstein's "America Medley".
    John Williams who is a great composer in his own right only has one number on this collection - that is "America, The Dream Goes On". This is one track on this collection that has vocals (although no credits are given to the vocalist(s) who sings). Although you'll hear the Boston Pops play real nicely here, it is the stirring vocals that make this one of the highlights of the CD. I consider Williams the best in the business, so I expect nothing less when it comes to him.

    There are no liner notes whatsoever. I would have liked some sort of commentary of background on the pieces in this collection. As mentioned, this does hurt particularly in the Williams piece "America, The Dream Goes On". Overall, this is a great way to get an intro to modern classical music and is a nice change of pace if you don't normally listen to classical.

    Brian Hyland got his first taste of stardom while still a sophomore in high school; his chart-topping hit, Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polkadot Bikini, has been a staple of novelty compilations for nearly 40 years. As he reached his latter teen years, Hyland morphed into the Bobby Vee/Bobby Vinton/Gene Pitney teen idol mold popular at the time and connected with a classic girlfriend leaving for the summer pop song, Sealed With A Kiss. By 1970, at the age of 27, Hyland was already on his sixth label, Uni. He enlisted fellow former teen idol Del Shannon to make a more mature record than he had in the past, entitled simply Brian Hyland. The musical breadth of the album is quite remarkable; opening with the Sondheim/Bernstein song Maria from West Side Story, then making an immediate segue into a cover of Jackie Wilsons Lonely Teardrops. The album also featured covers of Larry Williams Slow Down (later popularized by the Beatles) and what ultimately became B. B. Kings signature tune, The Thrill Is Gone. But it was a Curtis Mayfield-penned hit for the Impressions from 1961 that was the albums centerpiece: Gypsy Woman. The Hyland cover hit #3, seventeen notches higher than the original. Hyland and Shannon teamed up to write about half the album, but only two songs managed to break into the Hot 100 and they were both covers. They were also his last two entries into the pop charts.

    Those who know Hyland's work probably remember this album's #3 charting single, "Gypsy Woman"; others will peg him for his 1960 novelty "Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini," or his classic 1962 long-summer hit "Sealed With a Kiss." All three provide elements of Hyland's sound - playful, melodic and dramatic - but none fully prepare you for the brilliance of this 1970 come-back LP.

    With fellow pop master Del Shannon in the producer's chair, Hyland sang a superbly selected set of covers and originals. The opening medley from Westside Story is turned from show tune to soul-searching adult-contemporary pop, with drums, bass and piano in front of a compelling string arrangement. Hyland is surprisingly effective as a blue-eyed soul singer on Jackie Wilson's "Lonely Teardrops," and with the help of a fuzz-guitar, Larry Williams' "Slow Down" is turned into a credible blues-rock shout.

    Hyland is a gifted artist - much more gifted than his hit singles revealed - able to marry the qualities of his voice to the demands of his material. His version of "The Thrill is Gone" won't make you forget B.B. King, but neither will it have you fast-forwarding to the next track, and his hit rendition of Curtis Mayfield's "Gypsy Woman" perfectly modernizes the Impressions original into early-70s soul. Shannon's arrangements follow suit, cannily melding a pure-pop background into the songs' own structures.

    Hyland and Shannon's originals are just as good as the covers, winningly mixing bass-guitar-and-drums with organ, strings and horns. "On the East Side" and "I'm Without You" show influences of the Hollies and Zombies, as well as the production-pop sounds of California. "Drivin' Me Crazy" has a fuzz-guitar underlining the vocal longing and McCartney-esque bass, and Hyland's folky song of suicide, "Mail Order Gun," brings to mind Paul Simon's early "A Most Peculiar Man."

    Hip-O Select's reissue reproduces the album's original eleven tracks, and houses the CD in a slightly-oversized mini-LP cover preproduction. Sound is excellent, but the lack of new liner notes explaining the circumstances and fate of this LP is disappointing. Pop fans should snap this up while you can still find it, as the reissue was limited to 5000 copies - you'll kick yourself for missing it a second time! [©2006 redtunictroll at hotmail dot com]
