This, Anonymous 4's final recording, is a break from their usual "early music" periods and locations; it presents American music, religious in nature, from the 18th and 19th centuries. And it's absolutely beautiful from start to finish. Their normal, exquisite technique and purity here blend to sound the way we imagined the ladies' choir in church meetings in America past might have sounded: sweet, sincere, and with harmonies recognizable yet somehow fresh. Some of the songs begin with the women singing "fa, so la" exercises, which was called "shape note" singing because some places taught singing with notes as shapes--circle, rectangle, diamond, triangle. But it's the music that counts, and there are treasures here. They include two versions of "Amazing Grace," one familiar, one with an unusual melody and a piece called "Blooming Vale" which is as sophisticated as anything on their previous albums. "Shall We Gather at the River" is performed with a clarity and loveliness that makes us forget that it's normally sung as background to movies about the Great Depression. The foursome sometimes sing in rich harmonies and occasionally alone or in pairs or trios. This is glorious Americana and highly recommended. --Robert Levine

I have some of the older Anonymous 4 recordings which are more medieval
and gregorian in style (I love them!). They move on to cover spiritual
basics of the 1800s. If you like classical music, perfect harmonies
and spiritual americina, then you will be blessed!

Rich Heritage.......2006-10-11

Anonymous 4 consistently produces exquisite and authentically beautiful recordings and this one presents early American hymns in ways few groups can manage. Some tunes are highly recognizable while others are 'new' to me but a refreshing reminder of the singing heritage of religious societies in times past. For those who enjoy old hymns and authentic renderings, this is a must buy.

Can't walk away from it!.......2006-08-07

My only "complaint" about the CD is that I absolutely HAVE to sit and listen to the entire thing whenever I start it up! I usually have music playing in the background while doing other things, but not this one! There are no tracks that I find myself wanting to skip over as in most collections. In fact, I usually find myself going back and listening to selected tracks again (and again and...) after taking the hour+ to listen to the whole thing through once.

These four ladies produce a unique and remarkable sound. I can't recommend it enough.

I think the title of this CD is perfect. I first heard an interview for this CD on Public Radio and fell in love. I had never heard Anonymous 4 before then but look for all I can find of their music now. The title is perfect as the women sound like Angels and the music lifts the spirit. I find myself singing the old version of Amazing Grace all the time now. Incredible and a huge blessing to all who hear it.

Considered by many to be the Material Girl's most mature effort of the '80s, Like a Prayer upped the ante of controversy with its gospel-infused title track and the singer's emotional confessions throughout. The year 1989 was no doubt the pinnacle of Madonna's success. The release of "Like a Prayer" reinforced her status as a pop culture icon, gifted musician, trendsetter, fascinating persona, and the reigning Queen of Pop. This album challenged people's thinking and gave pop music more integrity than it ever had, which is why it is still hailed by critics in the present day as one of the best pop albums ever released. The title track, "Express Yourself," and "Keep It Together" are the most obvious standouts; anthems that rallied for empowerment, faith, and humility. "Oh Father," "Til' Death Do Us Part," and "Promise to Try" offered glimpses of hidden vulnerabilities that were (and still are) often overshadowed by some of Madonna's outrageous antics, while "Spanish Eyes" and "Act of Contrition" are as shrewd as pop music gets. The album has its share of duds though as well. "Love Song" and "Dear Jessie" are both critical flukes; songs that weren't intended to be anything more than filler but garnered accolades nonetheless, and even though "Cherish" is one of the most inviting tracks on the album, it still sounds like a leftover from "True Blue." Despite the album's lack of cohesiveness, its emotional, spiritual, and cultural impact remain unrivaled to this very day. It also marked one of the few times Madonna's craft matched her ambition. Madonna's Masterpiece!.......2007-01-19

In 1989 when this album was released Madonna was without a doubt the biggest female singer in the world and she had already released 3 very successful albums and also some soundtracks. But this time around she wanted to do something else with her music. "Like A Prayer" deals with her family, upbringing, personal life and religion and is obviously both confessional and personal. With this album Madonna would finally reveal a new side of herself which would make stubborn critics overjoyed. It doesn't hurt that this album is a hybrid between so many diffrent genres like, Pop, Rock, Dance Soul and Ballads. It really doesn't leave anything out. Most of the songs are memorable and have a deep contexture. No wonder this is considered Madonna's best album.

The first song, title track "Like A Prayer" led to controversy imediatly after it's video release where Madonna break all the rules. Making love to a black saint, Played by (Leon Robinson) developing stygmata and burning crosses, but it also deals with discrimination and rape and whatever people may think the song is about a religious relevation. But in this case controversy was good and the song became a standard and reached the top of the charts all over the world, including the US. And who can deny it isn't a fantastic song, it's message, it's hook and the great gospel choirs towards the end, hence the video isn't bad either!. Second single "Express Ypurself" also got a clear message, girl power. "Don't Go for Second Best, Put Your Love to The test" and in a world of globalization and new tecniques there is hardly anything that women can't do as good as men. "Love Song" a duet between Prince and Madonna, but it really isn't among this album's their best, let alone this album's, but it's fun hearing them together. "Till Death Do Us Part" deal with her failed relationship to Sean Penn and that he was also abusive and the next song "Promise to Try" a slow song about the death of her mother when Madonna was just a child.

After a few very deep songs Madonna follows up with her third single "Cherish", a happy dance-pop song that deals with joy, emotion and passion. It raeched #2 in the USA. Next song "Dear Jessie" is simular, another uptempo dance-pop song. Never released as a single in USA but a hit in Euorope. "Oh Father" is also a deep song about her relation to her father who was sometimes abusive aswell. A single, But it wasn't a big hit though. "Keep It Together" is another personal song about her childhood, family and the situation growing up that was sometimes very tough with little money. "Spanish Eyes" a ballad, I think it is about finding your own faith. Good song atleast. Closer "Act Of Contrition" is just spoken lyrics and not much of a song. Seems like she's praying or appologizing to god.

Overall, I think this is Madonna's best album. She exposes herself and reveals her deepest secrets and hence showing a new side of herself that was hard to imagine at the time. The album got so many good songs with interesting lyrics it's difficult to sum it up, but all of the songs are good and tells a story by their own. If you want a good album, here you got one.

Amazing, beautiful, breathtaking and deep........2006-12-13

Most Madonna fans and critics in general seem to think that her 2 best albums are 1989's Like a Prayer and 1998's Ray of Light. They are correct in this opinion. But people seem to go back and forth on which of these releases is the better of the 2.

I've always gone with Like a Prayer. This album not only represents her most serioues artistic achievment it also exhibits a timeless quality that has caused the album to age better than anything else in her entire extensive catalog.

First of all, Madonna and the producers/musicians decided to record most of all the band/vocal tracks live in the studio at the same time, which gives the album a true live feel. It also makes this her most organic sounding release as well. The synthesizer stuff from her earlier albums is minimized and in it's place are more basic/stripped down instrumentations. But that's not to say this album is anything basic. They also use to great effect gospel choirs and even Prince makes a guest appearance on vocals on 1 tracks and guitar on that track and 2 others. Strings and other great additions really add to the proceedings without clogging the work at hand.

I realize that Madonna has never been viewed as a great lyricist, but on this album in particular shows her reaching deep down in a sprititual/artistic sense that stunned/silenced her critics/detractors at the time who claimed that she still didn't have any talent whatsoever. This is her most personal work and the topics range from her talking to God, referring to her fatherly abuse she suffered growing up, penning an ode to her at-the-time recently deceased mother and other personal topics. But the lyrics never become pretentious in any fashion and also seem more of a celabratory angle thanks to the vocal delivery as well as the backing music.

The musical styles also run the gamut from gospel to dance to funk to rock and pure pop. But the album still mantains a cohesive feel.

While Madonna's first 3 albums have seen recently to get the remastering treatment, Like a Prayer on the other hand was her first work to be completely digitally recorded. while the overall volume level is a tad lower than newer CD's, it still sounds great. But I wonder why Warner Bros. didn't just go ahead and remaster this release as well to slightly boost the volume/lows like on the other 3 remasters (Live a Virgin, True Blue and Madonna).

Even though it's understandable that many people don't view Madonna as a true artist due to how her offstage antics seem to constantly overshadow her music. People forget how much truly great music this constantly amazing woman has produced. One listen to this album will silence anyone who have doubts as to her as a true artist.

When she really puts her mind to it, this album in addition to Ray of Light show that this woman really can make some albums that transcend being simply great/state-of-the-art pop into the world of true art.

Madonna's third megahit!.......2006-10-03

1984's LIKE A VIRGIN was first and won Grammys,1986's TRUE BLUE was second and won Grammys also and this 1989 release was Madonna's third megahit and of course,won Grammys. The title track caught the attention of many church groups since it was,as the editorial review mentions,gospel-infused. Aside from the title track,Top 20 hits include EXPRESS YOURSELF,CHERISH,OH FATHER and KEEP IT TOGETHER. All but the latter two became part of 1990's THE IMMACULATE COLLECTION. The short ACT OF CONTRITION sounds a little bit silly with Madonna arguing(in speaking voice) with someone("What do you mean it's not in the computer?"). The other songs are great.

Wonderful, but not my first choice.......2007-04-07

I believe this was the first recording of Elijah in English that used an "international" conductor and some international singers. Fruhbeck gives a good, dramatic sweep to the piece, with some wonderful dramatic moments. This is an old fashioned performance, with only a solo quartet, and if there is a semi-chorus, I can't tell the difference. This means that the soprano is the Widow, and an Angel, the mezzo the Angel and Queen Jezabel, etc. You really should have a libretto, but you don't get one at this price.
Fischer-Dieskau roughens up his voice for the role, and therein lies a problem. The voice spreads and his diction suffers because of it; that and his unidiomatic pronounciation, with far too many rolled "r"s. He does the drama well, but what works well in lieder works here less well on the large scale. Odd, given his success as on opera singer (check out his Iago), that here he frequently comes off blustery.
Dame Gwyneth Jones belies her reputation and gives a contolled, dramatic performance, using her "edge" to advantage in "Hear Ye, Israel". Gedda's diction is amazing, with exactly the right color for this literature, and projecting a little more blood than an English tenor.
Dame Janet Baker is my star in this performance. Dramatic, heart-rending when need be, and in wonderful voice. She'll chill your blood when she tells the people of Baal to "slaughter him, do what he hath done!".
And as for the people of Baal, the Philharmonia Chorus is wonderful. Incisive and dramatic, with beautiful tone. I could do without the trick of the boy choir for "Lift Thine Eyes", and I miss the small ensembles, but all in all a fine performance, and good recording, circa 1968.
First choice in English, Daniels/Terfel: better Elijah in Terfel, better recording, more authentic orchestra, small vocal ensembles (as per the score) but inferior women (including Fleming: beautiful tone, but where's her head?). In German, it's Sawallisch/Adam all the way.
But if you're singing Elijah, and have a score, this is a good choice.

THE BEST recording of the BEST oratorio ever..........2006-08-15

Okay, I'm gonna admit I'm biased- I first sung in the chorus of Elijah when I was 14 and it made a BIG impression on me!
This recording is in every way wonderful. Starting with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He IS Elijah to me. His singing is perfection. He has amazing phrasing and his diction makes it possible to understand the lovely, inspired libretto to this heavenly music. There are so many pieces that are ephemeral, but a couple of my favorites are: #14, Lord God of Abraham and #37, For the Mountains shall Depart. Dieskau does a great job of what I think of as compassionate, heartfelt singing. His interpretation sounds like the voice of God himself. It has a quality of kindness and yet he sounds just as convincing reprimanding the people of Baal. He is the true highlight of this recording.

That said, the rest of the cast is wonderful as well. Gwyneth Jones has a lovely, silvery voice that has a clarion bell-like tone that rings over the large orchestra with ease. She has occasional "misfire" but is a consistent performer. Dame Janet Baker and Nicolai Gedda both perform at a consistently lovely level. The orchestra and chorus are both wonderful. #15, Cast thy Burden upon the Lord, #32 He that Shall Endure to the End, and #38 Then Did Elijah are all highlights.

All said, for me the main reason to get this recording is Dieskau's Elijah- after all, he's the main character. But don't forget the lovely music. This story is exciting and passionate and sacred all at the same time. For me, it's the best oratorio that has a moving story and great music too.

This is a good recording of an oratorio that deserves more attention. The chorus and soloists are very good--I just wish Fischer-Diskau wouldn't slide around so much in singing the title part!

This CD is a must have for any Mormon Tabernacle Choir fans. The music is very reverent and gentle, and should also appeal to those not from the LDS church, seeing as how most of the music is common to the wider Christian community. This CD is a fantastic addition to any music collection.

A few bright spots, but also some disappointments.......2007-01-19

It Is Well With My Soul is one of my favorite-favorites and that is the main reason why I bought the CD; it turned out to be a huge let down on this album, they rearranged it so much that I almost didn't recognize it. Be Still My Soul is another reason why I bought it and it's good, but not great. Swing Low Sweet Chariot is where it starts to get good. The last two songs "Thou Gracious God, Whose Mercy Lends"
and "Come, Let Us Anew" are very good reasons to buy this CD, they each have truely powerful passages and make the CD worth having. The Mormon Tabernacle Choirs 2006 release entitled Then Sings My Soul is by far the best that I've heard from them.

However, the rating scale has a limit of five. I own over 700 CDs of virtually every type of music. Peace Like A River belongs in a class by itself! I've never written a review before but, after listening to this STUNNING performance by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, I feel compelled to share my praise with that of the five other reviewers. If I were limited to one word, I would use the word "SUPERB" to describe this beautiful and moving CD. SIX stars for Peace Like a River! BRAVO!!!

This album is all beauty and solace. The singing is pristine, the arrangements lush and often stirring--never saccharine. As with the previous reviewer, my first listing of "Peace Like a River" brought me to tears (especially "Peace Like a River," the sopranos in "Swing Low," and the bagpipes in "Thou Gracious God"). Buy this one.

Fabulous!.......2005-05-29

The perfect recording to help you recover from a long, hard day. Showcasing the MTC's "new" sound in contemporary choral arrangements with its own orchestra and conductor, "Peace Like a River" brought tears to my eyes in selection after selection during my first listen -- and I'm not normally an emotional person! The title song together with "Deep River," "Swing Low" and "Be Still My Soul" are alone worth the cost of the recording. Get this one!

LOVE IN ANY LANGUAGE.......2006-12-26

I bought this CD for the song "Love Is Spoken Here" which was sung at my father's funeral, to celebrate his life and love of music, especially Church music. Our soloist was a friend whose voice warmed our breaking hearts. But when I saw that I could also get the Mormon Tabernacle Choir version along with many other beautiful American songs, I ordered this. I highly recommend MTC if you are seeking choir music to lift your spirit.

Lerner & Loewe Songbook.......2006-02-24

If you like Percy Faith's music, you'll like this one. He quit recording and died much too young. But while he lived, he recorded some great music.

This CD represents some of the best of Broadway done in a great pops style. There are five orchestral suites, one each for the following: 'Camelot', 'My Fair Lady', 'Gigi', 'Paint Your Wagon', and 'Bridgadoon'. They are all arranged for orchestra by Robert Russell Bennett, save that for 'Paint Your Wagon', which was arranged by Cincinnati Pops Orchestra director Erich Kunzel.

The works of Lerner and Loewe were a mainstay of Broadway for decades in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, but it was during the late 50s and early 60s that their true glory days took hold. The presidential term of John F. Kennedy gained the nickname 'Camelot' in part because of the influence of the Lerner and Loewe production going on at the start. The songs contained in these suites are instantly recognisable by many, as the Lerner and Loewe songs have become so well known that many know the songs better than the musicals or the composers from which they come. 'I Could Have Danced All Night' and 'Wouldn't It Be Lovely' come from 'My Fair Lady', 'Thank Heaven for Little Girls' from 'Gigi' - these are but the most of famous of the familiar tunes.

There are a lot of pieces here that the listener will appreciate, both in remembering old pieces or in learning new nuances to the tunes.

This particular disc by Telarc has a feature called 'Spatializer', which gives a three-dimensional quality to the sterophonic sound, enhancing regular players and working well with surround-sound systems, too. The Cincinnati Pops are expert at this kind of music, having produced dozens of CDs of popular music and modern composers of musicals, film music, and pops-oriented major compositions.

This is a fun disc to have.

A Successful Sequel.......2005-08-03

This CD is a follow-up to the Rodgers & Hammerstein Songbook for Orchestra (1991) from the same team. It is a thoroughly successful sequel: I believe anyone who enjoyed the R&H will enjoy this one as well. If I am very slightly less enthusiastic about this one than the R&H, it's not because of any shortcoming of Kunzel, the Cincinnati Pops, or Telarc, all of whom are at the top of their form. Rather it's because Frederick Loewe, for all his undoubted expertise, is not quite in the same class as a composer with Richard Rodgers. But that's asking a lot, since Rodgers was the American musical theater's leading light. Lerner & Loewe's musicals were second only to R&H's during the golden age of the American musical, and their My Fair Lady is by any standard one of the best musicals ever staged. If Loewe did not create as many unforgettable numbers as Rodgers, he nevertheless wrote many delightful songs and much enjoyable music. This CD features five orchestral suites, ranging in length from 9 to 18 minutes (total playing time 68:06), from Brigadoon (1947), Paint Your Wagon (1951), My Fair Lady (1956), Gigi (film 1958; staged 1973), and Camelot (1960). The arrangements (all but one by Robert Russell Bennett) are expert. The performances are masterly (if perhaps lacking in just a tad of the infectious brio that the same team brought to R&H). And Telarc's robust sound (recorded 1993) would be hard to improve on. Warmly recommended.

Delightful Listening.......1998-12-05

Some of the nicest and nearly forgotten music (Paint your Wagon & Brigadoon) is nicely compiled here. It will make you want to listen to the full soundtracks again, but for a quick tour of Lerner & Lowe, it is very nice.

This program seems designed primarily to display soprano Sumi Jo's fabulous singing and famous stylistic eclecticism. However, it also exhibits an admirable religious inclusiveness, encompassing expressions of faith from the Latin liturgy to Negro spirituals; there is even a Richard Strauss song that is essentially a paean to love. An incongruous note is struck by a nun's song from an operetta by Benatzky that is a corny Viennese waltz and by a soundtracklike arrangement of a 16th-century Ave Maria. Ranging from Mozart to Broadway, this musical mix is held together by Sumi Jo's ravishingly beautiful, pure, warm voice and the way she can color and inflect it, and by her mastery of every style (though not every language; her German in particular is unintelligible). Her intonation is impeccable, her breath control incredible. Jo's top notes soar triumphantly, and she can sustain them indefinitely, with enough power left to make a crescendo at the end. Highlights include Ravel's "Kaddisch," which sends shivers down the spine; arias from operas by Rossini and Donizetti; and arias from sacred works by Gounod and Fauré. Of two spirituals, the second one is simpler and more convincing. The accompanying forces are excellent; James Conlon doubles as pianist when not conducting. Susan Graham also makes an appearance in the moving invocation "Take Care of This House" from Bernstein's 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. --Edith Eisler

Nice Voice.......2007-05-06

Sumi Jo has a beautiful voice but her renditions of Motherless Child and Amazing Grace were not impressive at all. The vibrato was too uncontrollable. The Ave Maria was so,so. I did not hear the richeness others have declared in their assesments. Don't get me wrong, the instrument is quite beautiful but only in some selected selections.

"Music and poetry emerge from man's desire to give thanks, to praise and to pray to his gods. One of the magical powers of the human voice is that it can fly, on the wings of songs (a la Mendelssohn) to heaven and appear to be in direct communication with God." Therefore, it is no surprise that prayer is omnipresent throughout the history of music. Sumi Jo has chosen an excellent representation of songs including most styles and periods which include : Baroque (Caccini)-Classical (Mozart)-Contemporary (Preisner)-Romantic Opera (Rossini,Donizetti)-German 'Singspiel'(Schubert)-Lieder (Richard Strauss)-French church music (Gounod ,Faure)-traditional music (spiritual)-Jewish melodies (Ravel)-Viennese operetta (Johann Strauss) and the American musical (Bernstein).

Sumi Jo, born in Korea,is a much sought after coloratura soprano, having triumphed on stage, and in recitals all over the world. Not being fond of coloraturas, I make an exception for her voice, because of its depth along with the very high register. She shows a great deal of sensitivity to all of her varied selections on this disc, and each delivery is a 'gem' unto itself.

I must personally comment on those works that I particularly enjoy. Hearing her sing Mozart's 'Laudate Dominum' was a real treat; it doesn't matter how often one hears that lovely piece, just like all of his music, it 'wears' well. The 'Pie Jesu' was absolutely stunning as Sumi Jo sang it, and it is a pleasure for me to hear the selection from "GIGI" by Lerner & Loewe; not being a great broadway fan, I have always liked that specific musical. I think because it was well-done when I saw it years and years ago.

This disc is abolutely totally enjoyable. There is something for all musical tastes, and the conductor/pianist James Conlon does a great job pulling it together!!!!!

One word: Lacrimosa. It haunts you and will stay with you long after you hear it. I actually forced several if my coworkers to listen to it many of which are not opera fans and even they could not argue the beauty of it. One of my coworkers was actual on the verge of tears by the end of the song.

The rest of the album is enchanting as well as breath taking. I am a harsh critic when it comes to singers so I do not give those compliments very often, nor am I easily moved by singers but Sumi Jo has certainly done that with this album.

My only complaint is that I would have liked to hear her take of "Ave Maria" by Schubert which, while recorded many times over, would complimented her voice perfectly due to it's simplicity. "Sing low sweet chariot" would have been another great one to hear but as far as spirtuals are concerned I was very happy with her acepella version of "Amazing Grace." I was never a huge fan of "Amazing Grace" since it's been done a thousand times over but she brought such seetness and emotion to it. Of course I am kind of biased becuase I offically hate the "belting" version of this song and that's how it's usually done. It's nice to hear a simple, straight forward version.

My last comment is that it's nice to hear Sumi Jo sing less operatic pieces considering most opera singers are rarely bold enough to sing anything other than classical pieces, excluding Renee Fleming of recent.

Prayerful and beautiful.......2005-11-14

It is a refreshing change to have a collection of arias on a CD with a title that actually bears some relevance to the contents. This is indeed a prayerful collection. That means, of course, that you have to be in the appropriately contemplative mood in order to appreciate it.

Another nice change is that the orchestral accompaniment enhances the singing rather than just tagging along as an afterthought, which often seems to be the case. It is fitting that James Conlon gets equal billing here. This is splendid singing to splendid music.

Sumi Jo is comfortable in any language and in a broad range of styles. I was uncertain how she would tackle songs like Amazing Grace and Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child. I need not have worried. In the latter she reveals a soulfulness that fits the lyrics perfectly.

The only track not worthy of this collection is Bernstein's Take Care of This House. I suppose, as it is a prayer, it was an obvious song to include, and Jo sings it very well, but it is just a very poor song. That still leaves 14 excellent tracks that, if you are a lover of good singing, you will want in your collection.

A spectalce of voice and vocalization.......2004-12-29

I bought this used from an Amazon.com dealer and it came with a cutout on the left side of the CD box. Can this specacular CD possibly have gone out of print by Christmas 2004? If so we have lost one of the benchmark recordings of this splendid artist.

Never is there a weak moment in this incredibly beautiful collection of classical bleeding chunks and spirituals. I don't think you'll confuse Sumi for your favorite spiritual singer in "Amazing Grace" and "Sometimes I feel like a motherless child" but she is magnificent singing the complete and incomplete tunes elsewhere on the CD by famous classical composers including Mozart, Richard Strauss, Rossini, Schubert and Donizetti, to name some of them.

She is in wonderful voice and fresh-faced for the Loewe-Lerner "Say a prayer for me tonight" and does an equally nice job with Susan Graham accompanying Leonard Bernstein's "Take care of this house" from "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue". I'm not much for this kind of music -- I bought this exclusively for her rendition of Mozart's "Laudate Dominum" -- but it adds a dimension to the concert that brings it into the realm of popular Broadway tunes.

This is a wonderful concert of familiar and not so familiar songs from a singer whose voice is eloquent, beautiful and rich, with significant range and span from PPP to FFF. Sumi Jo controls her voice well throughout the concert, giving everyone something to think about regardelss of musical preference. This might have been improved if she'd included a Beatles tune -- maybe "Elenor Rigby" or "Yesterday" -- accompanied by the orchestra and James Conlon's direction. But it stands with any similar collection by any singer as it is.

As a huge fan of Sarah Brightman and Hayley Westenra, I thought I would be equally impressed with Izzy. Instead I found her lacking. Her voice isn't bad, merely mediocre. I lump her with the Charlotte Church variety - pretty, but nothing special. I'll stick with Sarah.

I must admit, when it comes to Izzy, I am extremely biased, she is my favourite female singer, and as far as I am concerned, the greatest female vocalist, I already had most of these tracks on a British release, but I wanted the duet with Daniel Rodriguez, also the video of My Love is Like a Red Red Rose, in my estimation, this is the ultimate version of this beautiful song, if you've heard any of these tracks, but not by Izzy, you really should try to get to hear Izzy's versions. There's just a special magic, that she brings, you recognise the song immediately, yet at once it also seems fresh and new with Izzy's version.

Even the greatest opera duet ever, Au Fond Du Temple Saint, written to be performed by male voices, takes on a whole new life performed by Izzy.

This album is absolutely amazing: of that, Sarah Brighhtman should be afraid. I absolutely love La Brightman, but Izzy is sure to cause dissent among loyal Brightman fans with regard to who has the prettier voice, especially since Sarah left her operatic voice behind, for the most part, on her latest "Harem". "Les Temps Des Cerises, "Greensleeves" and "Steal Away" are enough alone to lobby for Izzy as our new "Angel of Music;" Or maybe I'm going a bit overboard here. Surely there is plenty of room in ear space for two angelically-dipped voices.

Sarah Brightman, return, full-voiced, or else...

I'm usually not a fan of Italian and French arias and operatic pieces, but Izzy does such a great job here that she has converted me...I especially like her take on "Sull'Aria," "Temps Cherises," and "Steal Away."

To answer another reviewer's question ("Where is she now?"), this album was released in September 2003, a year after "A New Dawn"--this IS where she is now.
