Customer Reviews:
Not bad, but grab the live album instead........2006-11-10
Preface: I'm a huge QOTSA fan and I love Kyuss and PJ Harvey.
Review: I never thought I'd hear myself say this, but this cd suffers from underproduction. The sound quality on some of tracks is just horrid. The two best songs on the CD are featured on the live DVD and CD in perfect form with a lot more energy. Don't get me wrong, I like this CD- it just wasn't what I was expecting and as such I didn't enjoy it as much as the live CD/DVD.
Cheers!
An essential for fans of the Desert Sessions.......2006-03-07
I don't know if I like this album as much as DS 7&8, but I felt compelled to review it after seeing young Chris's review.
Young Chris, you are right. You are absolutely correct.
You and your golden ears are the only ones who have "paid attention to the lineup of Desert Sessions albums at all". They get weird! They get all CRAZY! ZANY!
The bottom line is that this is like ALL of the other Desert Sessions recordings. Never to see the light of radio, just cool musically-minded folks trying some new stuff.
So it is musicians getting together and experimenting. So it has a harder edge, so what? It is still new and fresh and exciting.
Not weird.
Desert Sessions: Vol 9 & 10 (Rekords Rekords/Ipecac).......2005-10-31
If any of you had paid attention to the lineup of Desert Sessions albums at all, you would know that the music had gotten weirder and weirder by the release. Those who just wanted music wouldn't really call the last one too accessible. But this volume is accessible. I'll show you how.
1. Dead In Love I have a picture that they were playing somewhere in skelaton shirt and pants, until at the end they all play as actual skelatons and at the end of the video, it says Desert Sessions 1988-2003. THe music is all about the enoyment of a sadistic relationship that Jack and Sally couldn't even touch. The best I have ever heard so far on the album.
2. I Wanna Make It Witchu: I often found this little number cheesy, if not a sunny beginning. I say that this song seems a lot more accessible than Mark Lanegan's take on romantically strange songs on Desert Sessions 7&8 with "Covousier". I may eventually play it, but it ends up getting skipped by me.
3. Covered In Punks Blood: A Fight Club with Guitars. You getting dragged across a road that is and isn't finished by a trans-am. That is all you need to know.
4. There Will Never Be A Better Time: My 3rd favorite song. This one has a certain frantic feel of the song as PJ Harvey takes place with her guitar and ghostly voice.
5. Crawl Home: The first single off of the album, which I would play sometimes. The video I saw for it was good but didn't really coincide with the song too much, but nonetheless, the song is a bit like it or not. Once you buy the CD you'll be able to tell which direction to go. But I say, I recommend it to PJ Harvey fans.
6. I'm Here For Your Daughter: At first, I was so confused because that song that got off to a wonderful start, especially with the guitars, was so friggin' short. But quantity aside, this is my personal favorite and the out-of-whck song that you'd love, too. (If I was allowed to, I would have given you the entire song easily, but I rather you figure it for yourself. It never killed me.) Can you believe this song was performed only twice live?
7. Powdered Wig Machine: Imagine you were in England the days of Mozart, wearing those powdered wigs waltzing to this song. Yep, same way. Kind of weird but very good to listen to after a while.
8. In My Head...Or Something: The song that most people at the Lullabies To Paralyze page were complaining about. After having listened to both versions, I say that this is a good song, but LOP's version is a lot better. I even mouthed the words on LOP to this song. But nonetheless, this song is a good listen.
9. Holey Dime: Very dark lyrics from this one. The personal lyric that kind of affected me a bit was "sent to He11 on paper wings/They're all laughing/...A stitch in time and it's your turn to unravel." I'd be too lazy to say this song is about personal fascination with sadism. Alain Johannes outdid himself on this song.
10. A Girl Like Me: Polly Jean Harvey back to give us dark view and imagination on relationships. The song was too much on two listens but after having the CD for almost over a year, I evjoyed it.
11. Creosote: The fascination with Jingle-Jangle slide guitars is what got me to accept the beauty in blues music. Listen to this, and the jam will be a wonderful experience. You will feel as if you were actually watching the guitarist play the music.
12. Subcutaneous Phat: Josh's signature guitar slide comes in to hand you a funk-rock extravaganza from the makers of Desert Sessions.
13. Bring It Back Gentle: I wasn't into this song until yesterday. It's OK. The guitar jamming sesion in the middle made it worth my while.
14. Shephard's Pie: My 2nd personal favorite experience on the record with guitars and people cutting in to further add the cartoony exterior of animals coming in line to be served some shephard's pie. After that, are just commercials recommending you Rekords Rekords Records.
So there you have it. This CD seems a litle more accessible only because this CD has more music than spoken word interludes that filled the last album. Nonetheless, after you buy this, I suggest buying Vol. 7&8. And when you are done with that, I recommend checking out the rest of the Desert Sessions catalog to hear how it all started.
Queens, PJ, Ween, et al............2005-10-27
This album is amazing. I was in some dive of a record shop and the owner saw me pawing through Queens (my copies had been stolen) and turned me onto this album. I was reluctant to buy it but he swore it was a must have (unliike the other deserts sessions apparently). I was never into PJ Harvey or Ween for that matter but they rock! PJ especially. This is a little corner of flip side heaven...except for the 'In my head' which is a-side and a hit but it sounds like the rest of this surprise great album. Take the plunge!
Queen Polly Jean, one for the Stone age!.......2005-09-14
PJ Harvey meeting with the QSA really works well. I find the Desert really brings out the best in the gloom & doom world. Polly should definitely spend more time in the desert. After all, Jesus did some of his best work there!

Customer Reviews:
Duke's Magnum Opus.......2003-07-30
This CD contains Duke's last interpretation of his masterpiece, Black, Brown, and Beige. This is the only known recording of practically the entire work that has great sound quality (the Carnegie Hall concert of 1943 was very poorly recorded). And unlike the 1958 recording of BBB with Mahalia Jackson (which actually only consisted of the "Black" section of the piece), Johnny Hodges is present at this session and his rendition of "Come Sunday" is worth the price of the entire CD. This music is pure spirituality through and through. Renditions of Harlem and Ad Lib on Nippon are simply an added bonus to an amazing album. Highly recommended essential Ellington.
Black, Brown and (Most Of) Beige.......2001-02-20
Although you would not know it from looking at the CD cover, this disk contains an almost-complete performance of "Black, Brown and Beige" (BB&B), recorded in stereo by the Duke Ellington Orchestra. One of Ellington's very greatest compositions, BB&B was premiered at Carnegie Hall in 1943. Perhaps because of unfavorable reviews from the critics, the Duke withdrew this landmark composition from his active repertoire after only a handful of performances (although he continued to perform excerpts).
Ellington never favored the public with a completely acceptable recording of this 45-minute work. The privately made live recording from the 1943 premier concert captured a great performance of the complete piece, but in very poor sound. The first commercial recording of BB&B, from late 1944, was state-of-the-art for its time, but consisted of only 18 minutes worth of excerpts. A second commercial recording was made in 1958, but it presented only "Black," the first movement, and without Johnny Hodges present to play his moving alto sax solo on "Come Sunday."
The present disk consists of privately made stereo recordings from 1965 and 1971. About 90% of "Black, Brown and Beige" is presented, the only substantial omissions being the first 2 1/2 minutes and the last 3 1/2 minutes of "Beige." There were some reorchestrations, and the three movements are presented as piecemeal tracks instead of as unified wholes. Many of the musicians from 1943 were no longer around, but Ray Nance, Lawrence Brown, Harry Carney, and Johnny Hodges remained.
If not as great as the 1943 concert recording, this disk is a reasonable alternative for those who want better sound quality. The CD is rounded out by a fine recording of "Harlem," as well as by a stand-alone version of "Ad Lib On Nippon," recorded a year and a half before the complete "Far East Suite."

Customer Reviews:
Got Beats?.......2002-07-17
While house is one of my very favorite genres, I often have trouble finding decent compilations that are of quality and won't rip me off. I finally turned to a friend of mine who happens to be a local DJ, and he steered me to the Ministry of Sound series. I'm glad he did. Volume 10 is two CDs of aggressive, hard house. The first disc is mixed by Erick Morillo, and the second is mixed by the team of Hary "Choo Choo" Romero and Jose Nunez. Together, this package clocks in at nearly 2 and a half hours, and not one minute is wasted on this expertly done set. While both discs are great, Morillo's is the slightly better of the two: his grooves are tighter, and the tracks blend in nicely into each other. Unlike Louie Vega, whose sets can be a bit on the mellow side, Morillo's house starts off mellow to warm things up, but the beats get gradually more aggressive. We get nice, soulful vocals, a few Latin touches, and a dash of retro disco. The disc by Romero and Nunez is also a standout, with the only major difference being the touches of gospel that come up in a few tracks. A handful of the selections are set against spoken inspirational words; if you think gospel and house can't go together, then you have to listen to some of the jams on their disc. Hearing is believing.
All in all, I was impressed by this mix, which is one of the best ones I've heard in a while. I'm very grateful to my DJ friend for introducing me to Ministry of Sound, and I recommend this series to those who like their house deep, soulful, and slammin'.
MOS Sessions Subliminal Style.......2002-03-27
Sessions 10: The Subliminal Sessions (not to be confused with "Subliminal Sessions One" by Erick Morillo) is the next review in the MOS Sessions series. Featuring the DJ talents of Erick Morillo, Harry Romero and Jose Nunez, these sets give you two more reasons to invest in the Ministry of Sound experience. Fortunately the two sets were not split up like Sessions 12 (see the review). Erick Morillo mixes the first set and Romero & Nunez mix the second set. Had the rating system allowed, this Double CD set would have received 4.5 stars.
CD1 is the Erick Morillo mix lasting just over 70 minutes. If you've seen my other reviews of "More" Morillo, you know he's one of my top three favorites. This set is no exception as the mix is tight like I've come to expect from Mr. Morillo. The beats are heavy, the mixing is excellent, and the music selection is great. There is no lack of deep house in this set. The set is composed of mainly straight house music and some garage. The flavor of this set is very much like CD2 from the "Subliminal Sessions One" CD also by Erick Morillo, deep underground house with hardly any anthems to speak of. My cuts of choice are, "Club Fiesta", "Feel Me/The Preacher", "I Want You", "Brazil Over Zurich", and "The Way." This is an awesome set put together by "More" Morillo so if you like his other stuff you'll want this one too. CD1 gets 5 stars.
CD2 is the set mixed by Harry "Choo Choo" Romero and Jose Nunez. This is a good set but a little weaker than the Morillo set. Lasting over 73 minutes you get more of the same from the first set, just a little more mild. Again you get the mix of house and garage from the first set, with some disco mixed in too. There is nothing wrong with the format or music selection, however it comes up a little short of Morillo's set. That isn't a bad thing since any DJ that's paired with Morillo hasn't outdone him. My cuts of choice are, "Change", "Mas Pito", "City of Angels Dub", " Hazin' + Phazin'", and "90's Formula." The heavy garage influence really makes this a nice set. I just wish there were like 1 or 2 bangin' cuts on this CD to take it over the top. Oh well, it will just have to settle for being a nice compliment to CD1. CD2 gets 4.25 stars.
If paying a lot of money for imports is your thing then you have to invest is the Sessions series. There is good stuff here and even some 5 star material, as you'll see in future reviews. Sessions 10 has the goods and if you're a HousERaT like the one and only, you'll want this in your collection. If you can find this for less, you should definitely pick it up.
good party mix.......2000-06-23
This album is beautifully and masterfully mixed. Its some realy great tracks like la mouche and believe. It would be a great CD to play at a party.

Album Description
Combining Hip-hop, R & B, and old style soul in heretofore unheard of combinations, Baltimore's GROOVE STU are the versatile architects of "new style" soul. Not content to construct songs on the foundation of one genre, GROOVE STU sews a million threads of rhythmic interconnectivity with ethereal hooks that still seem to cook the sidewalks with passion and distinctiveness. While hip-hop energy percolates through the seams of each track, GROOVE STU's expert instrumentalists ground each song with a bed of funk worn musicality.
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely Wonderful!!!!!!.......2003-08-25

This album is blazing. It gives you everything you could need in a band and even more. The versatility of the band is amazing. They go from hip-hop to a jazzed-up R&B, to Soul and then on to Reggae. If you are looking for a cd that can move with you from mood to mood than this is the one to buy. It is a guaranteed great buy!!!!!!!
The STU is steaming in Charm City... Spread the word!.......2003-08-24
Groove Stu...This is an awesome array of music put together by these young people. It is one of those CDs that you can pop in for any mood setting. The remake of "Am I Dreaming" was a great randition to some of the others that are out on the airwaves. I am definitely feeling the duets, each one give you another level of understanding of where this group is coming from. The tracks that I repeat are Something,Gone 4 good,I don't know, curiosity, cool with you and most definitely maybe tonight.Take a chance on GROOVESTU,they wont let you down.
Awesome Debut.......2003-08-19
I had the pleasure of seeing Groove Stu perform live in Baltimore after weeks of hearing them on the radio. I was not prepared for what I saw. They are the epitome of musical versatility. They were able to take me places musically I hadn't been in a long time. Their live performance as well as their new cd is a breath of fresh air. There is something for everyone on this album. Don't wait get a taste of Groove Stu now.
Very Impressive Debut!!!.......2003-08-12
I recently saw Groove Stu open for Motown soul artist Donnie in Baltimore, and was blown away. Their live show was absolutely awesome. And so is their album Authentic 4.10 Sessions. On the album they take you through a range of different emotions and musical styles. Very much like their live show. Musically they give you hip hop, reggae, soul, and unbelievable ballads. You will not be disappointed. Pick this album up.

Customer Reviews:
the series ends on a high note..........2005-05-12
The first two tracks are just awful...the sort of filler you hear at the beginning of the night. But Jump into the Water kicks in with it's female vocal and thumping bass line, and I feel like I've stepped into Junior Vasquez's arena. The equally slammin diva vocal of Freedom follows in a wicked long version. Mid-way through the disc vocals become pretty standard, and some of the male vocal tracks are actually a treat, including the remodeled mix of Information Society, and Ron Perkov's cover of Dance with Me in its dub form. And the sample of Sabrina Johnston from "What Hope Have I" makes for a peak hour diva chant in Set Me Free. And two hardhouse tracks keep this one pumping to the very end. Perfect way to end this series. Track times:
1. temple of ra (1:47)
2. Drop some drums (7:08)
3. Jump into the water (6:52)
4. Freedom (10:44)
5. Never enough (5:50)
6. Keep on touchin me (5:48)
7. Running (8:56)
8. Dance with me (5:49)
9. Set me free (8:37)
10. blackout (3:45)
11. Come with me (8:18)
really bad!.......2005-01-08
I've heard Ra spin before and I really expected a lot more. This compilation has too many of the la la sing-a-long high energy 1AM vocals...I was expecting short, haunting repetetive, electronic vocals mixed with a deep, dark, progressive house beat. If that's what you're looking for also, skip this one(cause it ain't happening)and go for anything by SEB FONTAINE, he is one of the best in deep, dark, progressive house.
No Filler Tracks in Sight.......2003-01-11
A Great cd, lots of good tracks. They all flow seemlessly. You'll be listening to this over and over again. I definately recommend it!! DJ Ra, although I have never heard of him before really rocked on this cd. Every track on here is worth listening to. :)

Customer Reviews:
Too beautiful for words.......2004-05-25
If Julian Bream's recordings were letters, his would all be hand written rather than typed.
Guitar History.......2004-02-15
Julian Bream not only plays the guitar, and the lute
(although purists and I suspect Bream himself would say rather unconventionally), but most of all, Bream plays MUSIC. This is very, very important. There are many fine guitarists around today, but I doubt any could match Bream's sheer musicality when these recordings were made.
This 28 CD box set is a lesson in music making, regardless of what instrument is being played. The recordings are the complete RCA Bream catalogue from 1959 to 1989. If you can find the complete box set or even any of the individual volumes, I suggest you make the purchase. (Shame on RCA and BMG for not keeping this box set and "all" the individual volumes in print.)
Some of the higlights of Breams remarkable talent are his
interpretations of Britten's "Nocturnal", Walton's "Five Bagatelles", the instrumental and vocal works (with tenor Peter Pears) of Dowland, the "first" complete guitar works of Villa-Lobos, a thorough history of the guitar in Spain from the Renaissance to the Present on period instruments, plus all the works that have become classical guitar standards by Bach, Sor, Giuliani, Albeniz, Rodrigo, plus the "new" standards by Brouwer, Arnold, Berkeley, Britten, Walton, etc.
Music making of this caliber is rare indeed. Buy it if you can find it. Good Luck !
Best deal there is!.......2002-05-06
If you can find this set buy it fast. There are not to many of these left out there. This has it all. Plus Julian Bream is the greatest guitarist of all time.
Most excellent.......2001-08-18

Julian Bream, The Genius.......1999-01-09
Who don't want to have a wonderful classical guitar collection? Well, this pack consists in 28 CDs, more than 1.000 minutes of music, distribuited by different titles as Baroque Guitar, Spanish Guitar, etc. Some highlights are here, like Asturias, Fernando Sor variations on Mozart's Magic Flute, Paganini Grand Sonata, all Preludes and Etudes of Villa-Lobos, and, well, lots of really good things. Also, there are some cds Julian Bream plays Guitar with Orchestra, or with Harpsichords. Ah, he plays lute in some too. Unfortunately, there are 2 or 3 cds where a tenor sings and another which a woman says some poems, and those, in my opinion, are not very nice. So, it's a good collection, and if you can, buy it!!
