Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

This soundtrack offers a pretty standard mix of new songs, old chestnuts, and excerpts from the score (here by John Debney). On the new tip, Joss Stone and Patti LaBelle engage in an overheated battle of the divas on CD opener "Stir It Up," a bouncy piece of fluff that sounds more like Aretha Franklin circa "Freeway of Love" than classic soul. Other originals include Barenaked Ladies' "One Little Slip" (this movie's answer to Counting Crows' "Accidentally in Love" from Shrek 2) and the Cheetah Girls' peppy-but-bland cover of "Shake Your Tail Feather." But the real highlights are the songs performed by the movie's vocal cast, which includes Joan Cusack, Garry Marshall, Zach Braff, Steve Zahn, and Amy Sedaris. Their group cover of Elton John and Kiki Dee's "Don¹t Go Breaking My Heart," for instance, sounds as if half of them were drunk in the recording studio (and this is meant as a compliment.) Braff's a cappella version of "We Are the Champions" is smashing and Cusack and Zahn's take on the Spice Girls' "Wannabe" is completely demented. The kids will laugh; their parents will laugh even harder for completely different reasons. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars my little one loves Chicken Little.......2007-04-05

My husband bought the Chicken Little movie for our 3 year old (mostly to get us OFF the Cars movie that we all have memorized) and he fell in love with it! He likes to act out the scenes and loves the music. He loves this CD at night when he's going to bed. We all have to dance to One Little Slip (he knows all the words) and then we have to "shake our tail feathers" before he jumps in bed every night! I enjoy the cd too, so it's good for everyone!

5 out of 5 stars this is a great kids cd!!.......2007-03-24

My daughter absolutely loves this cd. I could not find it anywhere until i looked on amazon, so thank you amazon!!

5 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack for the children, especially if they liked the movie!.......2007-03-14

My son loved the movie Chicken Little, so we decided to purchase this for him to listen to on his discman. He loves the soundtrack as much as the movie, which made it an awesome investment(especially since the soundtrack has many good singers that aren't too hard on the ears for the adult crowdes either). My son was very happy with this item, and so was I.

5 out of 5 stars Her favorite gift..........2006-12-23

I bought the CD to accompany the movie. My four year old watches the movie everyday. When I gave her the CD, after listening to it nightly, she takes it to bed with her everynight where I have to pry it out of her hands after she falls off to sleep. I don't get it, but she does...so it's worth what I paid for it.

5 out of 5 stars Chicken Little Soundtrack.......2006-08-29

This is a great soundtrack from a variety of different artists. If your child loved the movie you will absolutely love this CD!!!

3 out of 5 stars Muffled.......2006-11-03

This is a decent enough recording, but it's not anywhere near the best that I have heard. The Andre Previn/LSO recording is much better mixed; at times it seems like there's a muffle on the mikes, or that you're hearing it from a distance.

If I wanted good, dynamic background music, I'd do this. If I wanted to really listen to the music, I'd pick another version.

3 out of 5 stars Somewhat disappointing........2003-09-10

I bought this for the full-length rendition of Rhapsody in Blue. I found the brass too tinny sounding, and the rhythm off in a few places. I like the snippet of this song on the "Best of the Milleneum" CD much better.

5 out of 5 stars Gershwin At His Best in Hearts!.......2003-03-19

To someone who came along as a teenage boy in the mid-1940's, this CD has the elements of authenticity, even surprise, musical history, highly intense performances, and ways evoking memories of emotional highlights of my Youth. When mediocre orchestra 1st tackled Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" at Smoky Mtn Music Camp we were preparing for Sunday's outdoor Concert. Pianos were played by two friends who've presided Music Dept at Carson-Newman College in East Tennessee. In the Trombone section was a skinny kid with too much hair and too big an ego! When our esteemed conductor began the opening bars the Clarinet Soloist, my close friend Danny Boy slide-up the chromatic scale with fleurish. He later became a NC Doctor! He likely plays clarinet for his own amazement in someone's Dixieland Band!

On this wondrous CD there are historic names like Bernstein, Kostelanez, John Williams and Michael Tilson Thomas, Conductors. Andre Previn, Yo-Yo Ma and Sarah Vaughan as Soloists. I would have a hard time choosing which may be called my favorite! It would depend on the day they are playing in my car... traveling to Columbia Seminary classes or GA Diagnostic Prison for lunch with Chaplain friends! I often sing along with the Rhapsody as I did in 1949 when Oscar Levant soloed with Chattanooga Orch. My very young wife was playing in the first violin section! Still today I am totally wiped out when anyone as intensely romantic as Sarah Vaughan sings "Summertime" or "I Loves You, Porgy!"

Is it not amazingly wondrous that someone could create so much enjoyable music in his short lifetime of 39 years? I never wish to part with this all-time favorite 10-Star Recording!
Retired Chaplain Fred W Hood

5 out of 5 stars The best America has to offer!!.......1999-03-09

This is the best collection of his songs i have ever heard. That's probably because it features conductors like John Williams and Micheal Tilson Thomas. My personal favorite is the allegro agitato from the Concerto in F. I have other recordings of this song, but none of them can even come close to matching the excitement of this one.

4 out of 5 stars The Roaring Twenties still roar.......2006-12-17

For the first 35 years of its existence, the recording industry used no electronics, no microphones, no editing of any kind for its product. Sounds for both cylinder and disc records were captured by a large horn that concentrated air vibrations down to an etching needle.

Surprisingly, this method was quite tolerable, as extant records from 80 or 100 years ago prove. Once one adjusts to the limited frequency range of acoustic recordings you quickly discover a performance dynamic unique to the format.

HITS OF '21 * Ain't We Got Fun? is the second of a series released by a British company, LIVING ERA. Horn recording had reached its technological pinnacle by 1921, as the 25 examples here demonstrate. Many stars of the 'teens and 'twenties who we still remember today will be found in this collection. These include Al Jolson, Fanny Brice, Ted Lewis, Eddie Cantor and Paul Whiteman.

Additionally there's Vernon Dalhart, one the earliest country music recording artists (back then it was called "hillbilly"). Dalhart was best known for "The Prisoner Song." On "Tuck Me To Sleep.." he is backed by a vocal quartet. Also on this set are Van and Schenck, a comical vaudeville team, whose 1914 waxing of "Aba Daba Honeymoon" was one of the best sellers of that decade. Here they do a spirited version of this album's title cut, "Ain't We Got Fun."

Other still remembered tunes on HITS OF '21 include "My Mammy," "The Sheik Of Araby," "Ma! He's Making Eyes At Me," "All By Myself," "Look For The Silver Lining," and "My Man."

Notes are included for each track, which is a definite plus. This collection is a great way to get acquainted with the happy music of the Roaring '20s.

Carter Burwell cut his film scoring teeth on many a Coen brothers movie, quickly gaining a reputation for a quirky, human-scaled inventiveness that informed everything from jazz and folk to orchestral music and even the well-timed nod to Morricone. That often introspective sensibility is well paired to director John Lee Hancock's revisionist take on the legend of San Antonio's fabled doomed fortress, which focuses more on the conflicted human dimensions of its characters than familiar cardboard, pop culture heroics. Burwell's use of orchestral pomp is deliberate and decidedly restrained; more often the composer leans on spare, evocative passages of simple, though ever-inventive folk-based music (like the elegiac "Quiet Mountain") played by various combinations of guitar, banjo, and violin. Vintage traditional Mexican and American tunes are also given their atmospheric due via Jennifer Hammond's and Craig Eastman's arrangements of "La Zandunga" and "Listen to the Mockingbird Sing," respectively. But its Burwell's own peculiarly modernist instincts that inform both tradition ("Crockett's DeGuello") and his own masterfully understated cues, particularly the bleak, almost gothic emotional landscape of his six-part "Battle of the Alamo Suite" and its bittersweet coda, "Blood or Texas." --Jerry McCulley

1 out of 5 stars Don't Remeber THIS "Alamo".......2006-07-21

When making another version of a film that has already been made producers, directors, performers, and score composers are too often tempted to "do it differently",as if by twisting and turning a basic premise they will succeed..The classic film version of"The Alamo"is and remains the John Wyane version, which was nominated for several academy awards.Granted, the John Wyane version had little to do with actual history, but, then again, the purpose of the film industry has always been to entertain, not to teach..John Wyane, who produced and directed,as well as being the star of that film chose Dimitri Tiomkin to score his film.
Tiomkin,and old-line symphonic genius,provided a magnificent score,at once adventurous and poingnant..
The people responsible for this version of"The Alamo"decided to teach, rather than entertain, and,at the same time attempted to be politically correct as well. Thus, the mythic aspects inherent in the John Wyane version were replaced by morally ambiguous nonsense, and heroics were more or less eliminated in favor of a rather desperate survival theme, coupled with some added imperialistic touches with the addition of the Sam Houston charecter as a major player along with Bowie,Crockett, and Travis.
The people responsible for this film ,having many fine symphonic-oriented composers to choose from instead opted for minalmism by Carter Burwell..One can hardly imagine, for instance,a five-star gourmet meal served on a foam plate, with plastic knife and fork.Likewise one can hardly imagine a would-be epic western (even if it is very revisionist)bearing a score that plays like a new-age snoozer...But this is exactly what Burwell has given us...There are no epic themes here...There is an enormous orchestra credited as having participated in this project however when one listens to the finished product one is hard-pressed to HEAR any evidence of this participation.
John Wyane's script called for a lot of action on-screen,and Tiomkin obligingly provided very suitable musical themes..
The script for this new film does not call for very much action, even short-changing the audience during the final battle scene by shooting it in near-darkness,and underscoring it with a dirge-like monotone.
This new film was"troubled"from the very start.Ron Howard was supposed to direct but he didn't.The cast was shuffled around several times. Some "Main"charecters were eliminated entirely ,although thier traces continued to show up in the trailers released for this movie..While on the subject of the trailers for this film, the music used in them was 110% better than the Burwell claptrap..Scenes featured in the trailers were actually NOT in the finished film. The film was scheduled for a christmas opening,a slot usually reserved for top-of-the-line oscar contenders, and was then, suddenly yanked, and later released in April, where it died a much-deserved death after about a week in theatres,a colossal flop.
The film was terrible, and part of this is due to the Burwell score which is terrible-plus.

4 out of 5 stars Defending the Alamo.......2005-09-09

I enjoyed the film and, in particular, the intelligent and sensitive portrayal of David Crockett but...so much had been cut by the time it was released as a DVD in England. The soundtrack is pleasant enough so if you liked it on the screen you will enjoy the CD but we do not have the Deguello on its own, (but have the haunting duo with David Crockett's fiddle), and we do not have the saucy little tune played at San Jacinto. On balance, worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable a-typical score.......2005-03-05

Most war movies have underscore's that pulse with energy and power of battle. Carter Burwell takes another course. His music is melancholy and some people have taken the celtic sounding music and complained out it but I found the music to be powerful and perfectly fitting with the movie. The Alamo is also enjoyable as a single listening experience although it does help to have seen the movie. I particularly enjoyed the track where Crockets fiddle is combined with the Mexican "Slit Throat" band. Overall, I found this cd to be enjoyable and it gets better every time i listen to it.

5 out of 5 stars None Better.......2004-12-01

A few comments about the movie The Alamo, if you would indulge me for a moment. It is pertinent. I didn't have high expectations for this film, the trailers I saw made it out to be another larger-than-life, ain't-afraid-of-nothing, cliché-filled motion picture. We lived in San Antonio for several years, it is a great town filled with wonderful people. We visited the Alamo on several occasions. It is a holy place for Texans, sacred, and being "non-Texans" I am sure most of the locals felt we really couldn't appreciate or even grasp the significance of the place, the honor of those who fought and died there. I must admit it was all somewhat lost on me. Thus, I was fully expecting this movie to be overdone and nauseating, especially considering I am not the biggest fan of two of the lead actors (Billy Bob Thorton and Dennis Quaid).

OK, please bear with me, I will get to my point in a second. We ended up renting the film as I had heard the cinematography was sensational (it was). But my biggest surprise was the film itself. Not the script, not the actors, but the entire film. I can't really put into words how good it was, not perfect, but an excellent motion picture and probably an accurate depiction of the individuals and events as they occurred. And both Thornton and Quaid were exceptional...they deserve Oscars come January, and it will be a shame if they don't get them.

Now, concerning this soundtrack. To put it simply, if this CD isn't the best soundtrack winner for 2004, then there is a conspiracy going on. It isn't on Amazon's editors picks, nor the customer's favorites list, I chalk that up to being it was just recently released. However, it should be on both, and highly competitive for the top honors this year. It is simply that good. Carter Burwell set a new standard with the soundtrack for O Brother, Where Art Thou? and may have exceeded it with this one. The music here just puts the visualizations of the movie back into my head...the music retells the story as well as the images.

The bottom like is fairly straightforward, if you liked the movie than you owe it to yourself to get this soundtrack. There is absolutely no way you will be anything other than engrossed in it.

4 out of 5 stars vintage Hugh Martin score a complete delight.......2004-12-23

LOVE FROM JUDY, based on Jean Webster's novel 'Daddy Long Legs', is pure vintage Hugh Martin. The show never made it to Broadway, instead enjoying a sold-out London season and an extensive provincial tour.

Jean Carson played Jerusha Abbott, an orphan at the John Grier Home who is mysteriously supported by a never-named benefactor. June Whitfield, Johnny Brandon, Adelaide Hall and Bill O'Connor round out the strong leading cast. Barbara Windsor played one of the orphans (for some interesting backstage reminisces about LOVE FROM JUDY check out Barbara Windsor's autobiography 'All of Me').

The Hugh Martin-Jack Gray score is quite lovely from what is featured on this disc (the recordings were originally designed to fit 4 sides of a set of 78's). LOVE FROM JUDY runs a scant 20 minutes, so the disc has been filled out with extensive bonus material.

We get Jean Carson singing "A Kiss to Build a Dream On", "Hug Me a Hug" and "Barrels and Barrels of Roses" (on the 2 former tracks she's joined by her then-husband Bill Lowe); Johnny Brandon singing 5 numbers including his mega-hit "Glow Worm"; and Adelaide Hall singing 2 great numbers. June Whitfield sings 5 numbers including two songs from GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES!

There are also selections from the Frank Loesser score of HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN; and a full-cast presentation of numbers from Disney's PETER PAN (both feature Jean Carson and Johnny Brandon).

4 out of 5 stars Three tracks that you will tear your mind apart.......2006-02-04

This 18-minute EP released by the Anticon label serves as a dazzling introduction to their skewed view of hip-hop, and at the same time will wow loyal fans of the collective. The artists on Anticon are simply a different breed. They aren't just students of hip-hop which some try so desperately try to preserve. They are students of pop culture as a whole, which translates into something the uninitiated may find horrifically bad. Sadly, some will pass them off as underground hip-hop's Captain Beefheart. I will admit, I'm not a huge fan of the newer Anticon releases. I too find some of them a bit pretentious and frankly, unlistenable (examples: Dose One's "Ha" [2005], Pedestrian's "Unindian Songs Vol. 1" [2004], cLOUDDEAD's "Ten" [2004]). With that said, people should know that the earlier released records on Anticon are far better (in my opinion). They ride the line between abstract experimentalism and hip-hop in a groundbreaking fashion. That sentiment is also present on Anticon's "More From June / We Ain't Fessin' (Double Quotes)".

The album opener, Deep Puddle Dynamics' (Alias, Dose One, Slug, Sole) "More From June" featuring Eyedea and produced by DJ Mayonnaise and John Herndon, is a killer on it's own. It's simply one of the most chopped up original sounding beats you'll hear. The track creeps in with the accessibility of Slug and Eyedea's flows, then slowly creeps into darker territory with Dose One and the rest of the collective. "We Ain't Fessin' (Double Quotes)" is a remake of the original version (originally titled "We Ain't Fessin'") taken from the "Anticon Giga Single" (2001). It certainly is a complete overhaul. It's lengthy track that is far disconnected, and at times more reminiscent of cLOUDDEAD (it is mainly Dose One and Why?). It's fairly uneasy to listen to, but completely admirable at the same time. The album closes out with some inventive production from Jel and Sixtoo on "Pitty Party People" which sounds relatively normal, and crisp, with plenty of stellar rhymes to match, making it a worthwhile discovery.

The CD is also one of the coolest CDs you'll find. It's a clear CD. There's only 18-minutes of music on there, so you can only see the silver written area about an inch and a half from the center. Otherwise, it's a fairly typical looking Anticon CD, with a red ant printed over the clear section. It was quite literally the main reason I bought the album, aside from the curiosity of what Anticon will bring us next.

5 out of 5 stars Great single........2005-11-06

Good single, worth picking up. Pity Party People definetly stands out on this cd. Its cool with Slug and Eyedea also on this cd. Deep Puddle Dynamics needs to make another full leanth album... really badly. Seriously i loved listening to them pour their hearts into "The taiste of rain... why kneel?" But i have doubts of that happening.

5 out of 5 stars iluvanticon.......2003-11-16

i think that this album is so hot. the lyrics are so real and the beats definitetly make it a number one on my list. everything about ant icon is real and down to earth. every time i listen to ant it makes me a better person. i give ant a two thumbs up for sure. anticon is for sure my favorite group.
