These days, it seems anyone can make an R&B album. However, recording a soul album takes that special intangible element. The 17-year-old Devon, England, native first proved that she has it with The Soul Sessions, a collection of rare soul grooves. She does it here again with Mind, Body & Soul, her first album of original material. For those who thought that Stone could only interpret vintage ballads, witness the midtempo attitude of "Jet Lag." Backed by a thumping backbeat, Stone tells of a love of so all-encompassing that it is physically draining. On lead single, "You Had Me," Stone takes the persona of a woman done wrong with biting edge and a funky wah-wah guitar introduces her "get lost" sentiment over an infectious hook. Mind, Body & Soul also features a host of moving ballads that are reminiscent of the more downtempo fare characteristic of The Soul Sessions. The choir-backed "Security" is an organ-touched tale of love and support in the wake of tragedy. "Spoiled," a song Stone wrote with the legendary Lamont and Beau Dozier of Dozier-Holland-Dozier, is a romantically lush offering in which Stone's alto caresses the piano-driven arrangement. Other Mind, Body & Soul highlights include the hypnotic "Snakes & Ladders" and the roots reggae vibe of "Less Is More." While The Soul Sessions introduced Stone to the world, this album will make her placement in the soul canon undeniable. --Rashaun Hall

5 out of 5 stars I liked every song!.......2007-07-10

This is Joss Stone's second album and I'm happy to say every song is good. I can't believe how talented she is. Her soulful vocals are the highlight of this album. I first heard Joss Stone on the radio with "Spoiled" and loved it. I was addicted to that song and it still remains to be my favorite song from the album. The first five or six songs are the best on the album but all of them are good. They're well written, well produced and well sung. If you have been curious about Joss Stone then I highly reccomend this album. I now am a Joss Stone fan. This is one of the best neo-soul albums since Heather Headley!

5 out of 5 stars AMAAAZING!!.......2007-06-09

I loooooooooove this album. It's definitley the best of her three. The only songs I don't care for are "Understand" and "Sleep Like a Child". The rest are amazinggggg. Esp You Had Me, Right To Be Wrong, Jet Lag, Killing Time, Snakes and Ladders, Security, and Dontcha Wanna Ride.

When I heard Killing Time, I thought for sure it was a remake because it sounded like such a classic song. THen I looked it up and saw that Joss wrote it, AMAZING!

5 out of 5 stars Premium quality white chocolate.......2007-06-01

I have a thing for white soul singers. No offence intended to black soul singers, who are of course brilliant. It's just that I feel a very interesting and unique vibe when that rare white singer excels at this genre. It is a hybridization of spiritualities. And Joss Stone possesses amazing soul, incredible talent and rich personality. All this at the tender age of 17 when she recorded this album (she's now 19). It's mind-boggling to imagine how much better she can still become.

'Mind, Body and Soul' is a bit of a paradox. It is raw, yet perfect: its youthful rawness itself is very charming. What I ask of listeners is to give it time. The songs are generally very simple, a throwback to the days when music (and life) was simpler and more sincere. Because some of these songs lack a catchy hook and seem so simple, you might not like them at first listen. But have a bit of that patience that music fans used to have, and you might find that the simplicity is accompanied by great sincerity and feeling. It is such a refreshing change in the 21st century to hear music that is simply good and heartfelt, with no stunts.

The songs that most people will like quickly are 'Right to be Wrong' (fabulous musicianship and lyrics), 'Spoiled' (richly sentimental and lush), and 'Jet Lag' (fun). But after about 5-7 patient listens, you might find that every song has the capacity to charm you and connect you with this young genius. The songs that grew most on me were 'Security' (beautifully sincere, stirring, pretty in its idealism) , 'Young at Heart' (youthful idealism and defiance), 'Snakes and Ladders' (energetically soulful), 'Understand' (very relaxed and really fun), 'Don't Know How' (classic-sounding) and 'Sleep like a Child' (tender night song).

The icing on the cake comes with the hidden track at the end. Joss unleashes her angsty side with an intensity and depth of feeling that are astounding for a fun-loving 17-year old.

Not since Vonda Shepard have I liked a white soul singer this much. Joss Stone is phenomenal for a 17-year old and is that rare kind of singer who can really move people deeply even though her vocal technique is still quite far from perfect. She makes up for it by singing straight from her amazing soul.

[...]Your thoughts and comments are most welcome.

5 out of 5 stars More of a good thing.......2007-05-31

Joss Stone continues with the formula that served her well in her first album, reaching back for some old school soul and putting her distinctive touch on it. There is a reason that some of the great artists and producers from the 60's and 70's have worked with her, they see that she has the gift to sing SOUL!!

Right to Be Wrong, Spoiled, Jet Lag, and Snakes and Ladders are just some of the highlights of this great album. The mix of songs shows her skill with dance tunes as well as slow jams.

There is absolutely no sophomore jinx here. If you really like soul, just listen to a couple of track samples and you will be hooked!

5 out of 5 stars Stone's Continuation Toward Greatness.......2007-04-20

On "Mind, Body, and Soul," Joss Stone had to follow up her phenomenal first release, "The Soul Sessions," where she took old but mostly unknown R&B songs and reworked them with a magic touch and a magic voice. So the challenge was clear: was she going to be able to do a CD of newer material and capture listeners as she has with the previous release?

I think the answer is a resounding yes. This CD demonstrates that "The Soul Sessions" weren't a fluke and that Joss Stone sounds just as good singing today's soul as she does singing yesterday's soul. She has a voice that shames vocalists with twenty or thirty more years of living than she has, and she seems to do it effortlessly.

"Right To Be Wrong," "Jet Lag," "Don't Cha Wanna Ride," and the other songs on "Mind, Body, and Soul" just prove that Joss Stone has a wonderful career ahead of her.

Given their origins, both geographically (San Francisco) and stylistically (founder Joe McDonald and lead guitarist Barry Melton first hooked up in a jug band), it wasn't surprising that the ragtag Fish sounded like an acid-soaked, plugged-in folk band when they debuted in '67. Simultaneously the most political and funniest of all the Northern California bands, the Fish's yippie-hippie philosophy was reflected in songs like "Superbird" (about Lyndon Johnson), "Flying High" (about getting you-know-what), and the bluesy free love saga, "Not So Sweet Martha Lorraine." That they could periodically wax serious as well (the wide-angled instrumental "Section Forty Three" and the moody "Bass Strings") only added more bite to their satiric pungency. --Billy Altman

5 out of 5 stars Whoah there........2006-11-08

This is hands down, the best album of all time!!!! Sounds best on vinyl.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.......2006-03-29

Wow! What to say about this highly entertaining and great piece of music. So, the Commie Pinko band can really rock! Everyone (conservative that is) back in the sixties thought of these guys as communists and agitators. Funny thing is they only had a few political songs. The rest make some of the greatest psychedelic music to come out of San Francisco.

I remember seeing this album in the record stores and always wanted to get it but just never did. I ended up getting Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die instead. Now that album is fantastic... but we are talking about this one.

Some 30 odd years later, I finally get a copy of the CD. Wow! The tunes are mostly blues based and Barry and David have incredible guitar chops. I particularly like their minor key runs and the fuzz guitar. This group of guys had some real chemistry and I don't know about the third album, but this one and the Fixin' album are just incredible. Favorites are Death Sound, Flying High, just to name a few. Death Sound is how psychedelic blues should be played! When I think back on it, I can hear a lot of Barry Melton and David Cohen influence in my guitar playing.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Waiting for the remaster.......2006-03-11

This album is an all time classic, as it is, but would be amazing if it were remastered. Come on Joe, get with it.
As a side note, I melted a hole in my first copy while trying to read the song titles on the album by the light of a lit stick of incense as the record was spinning around on the turntable.
Ahhhh, those were the days...........

5 out of 5 stars Psychedelia's greatest moment was a miraculous fluke.......2004-11-16

Have you ever wondered why ELECTRIC MUSIC is a masterpiece and why all of their subsequent records are absolute crap? Yes, they obviously dried up too soon. But there's a big reason why they dried up too soon. Turns out The Boys lost their religion. Consider the following dialog:

From CJ FISH ON SATURDAY NIGHT [1968] by Richard Goldstein: "I asked him why his music had changed. He straightened up slowly and took off his hat. 'See, we're not what we thought we were.'/'How so?'/'Well, 2 years ago, we believed in music like a god. If you're gonna get into a heavy acid trip, you're gonna get religious. If you stop taking acid, you stop being religious.'/'Our audience knew we got stoned and we knew they got stoned and it all worked in a big circle', Barry added./'Yeah, but music's nothing to believe in. I mean, it's just sound.'/'Do you feel like quitting now?'/'No, I still dig playing. If it got really bad, I couldn't even get up on the stage. But today, the only emotion I associate with music is pleasure. There used to be all kinds of...well...connotations.'"

A lot of people use music to drown out the silence of God. I wish they'd realize that the silence of God is merely the space between the notes. As you can hear in this record's last track: GRACE. My favorite moment in GRACE is Joe's descending delivery of the phrase "every day colored gold". No--wait. I take that back. My favorite moment comes after that. When either Melton or Cohen (I can't remember which) plucks those 4 perfect eerie notes that accompany the phrase "gold our love".

Melton & Cohen are also responsible for my fave passage on the entire record. The guitar section in THE MASKED MARAUDER. Specifically, the churning first part of it. It's a lysergic shade of melancholia.

Profound sadness is also present in the final section of SECTION 43. You hear a hard-to-identify instrumental timbre that sounds like a faint radio signal from outer space. The signal strengthens and it turns out to be Joe's harmonica.

1 out of 5 stars One Thing To His Credit.......2004-07-02

I say this as honest as I can this is one of the most annoying albums ever released. There's no real originality to it at all just alot of blues music. If you heard one blues artist you've heard them all. The only thing different is they have an annoying organ, or keyboard, but remind me never to buy the brand. It just cuts me to the core, and makes me feel so melancholy. To me this is just another San Francisco band that decided to record music played while stoned out of thier minds. If this is for the mind and body sorry my body's supposed to be a temple. Of course strike 2 is the blasted harmonica playing. Having an annoying organ is bad enough, but now you throw a harmonica into the mix you've gone too far. "Section 43" while annoying is rather creative in a macbre sense. I've pictured the little guitar interlude where I get the sensation of walking into a lovely garden, and following where my heart leads the sun is out, and I keep walking along, and spot a lovely girl, and pursue her, and I go further and further without a fear in the world as the sun's shining, but then I'm deep in the woods, and the dark clouds roll in; I rather not tread there again. Anyway I'll stick with the "Feel Like I'm Fixing To Die Rag". I love kazoos. Country Joe knew what he was talking about when writing that song after all he did do time in the navy. That would be one thing to his credit. Otherwise I'm left with the decision to see which was worse; this album, or his forgettable 1971 movie "Gasssss".

Cyndi Lauper may have been mocked as a ditz when she emerged in 1983, but her songs have proven to be a lot more enduring than those by more critically respected artists of the 1980s. "Time After Time," for instance, has been covered by everybody from Miles Davis to Faith Hill to Uncle Kracker. That stylistic range can also be found on The Body Acoustic, on which Lauper--her voice now endearingly raspy--revisits her best-known songs with the help of an impressive gallery of guest stars. Sarah McLachlan comes in for "Time After Time," while the likes of Adam Lazzara (from emo band Taking Back Sunday), Shaggy, and Ani DiFranco also pay their respects. Okay, so we knew Lauper was a good songwriter, but what's been emerging lately is her talent as an interpreter. Here she does to her own material what she did to standards on 2003's At Last. Among the standouts are the stark "She Bop" and the catch-in-the-throat "True Colors" (both sans guests), and the superbly emotional "I'll Be Your River" (with Vivian Green). But lest you think Lauper had gone all serious on us, the album concludes with the bouncy "Girls Just Want to Have Fun"; Japanese duo Puffy Ami Yumi (a direct visual descendent of Lauper's early days) sings the chorus while Lauper herself lets loose on a new ska arrangement. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars CYNSDI LAUPER "THE BODY ELECTRIC".......2007-07-02

THIS CAME AS A SURPRISE - IT IS GREAT BY ITSELF, BUT IT IS A 'DUALDISC' WHICH MEANS THE REVERSE SIDE IS LIKE A DVD!

4 out of 5 stars Cyndi Lauper At Her Best Vocally .......2007-04-29

This is Cyndi's 9th studio recording. The songs on this album are all updated classics from Cyndi's own repertoire, including: "Girls Just Want To Have Fun", "Time After Time" and "Money Changes Everything". The only songs on here that are new include: "Above The Clouds" which has a "Sisters Of Avalon" feel and "I'll Be Your River" which is totally acoustic. The album also contains many artists that sing with Cyndi like Adam Lazzara, Shaggy, Sarah Maclachlan, Jeff Beck, Vivian Green, Ani DiFanco and even Puffy Ami Yumi. The Dualdisc edition which I have, has on the other side of the cd, four new music videos made especially for this album, kinda sorta a behind the scenes of the making of the album. Also by the title of this album you know that it has a acoustic sound to it, which usually contains acoustic guitar, banjo, violin, bouzouki, mandolin, piano, cello, and of course voice. Overall I gave this album a 4 out of 5, because it's not Cyndi's most original of her career and is a little boring. What really saves this album from being a total bore is Cyndi who is at her vocal best, their at their most powerful and most strongest. The highlights are this album are "Money Changes Everything", "All Through The Night" and "Sisters Of Avalon".

4 out of 5 stars Some Very Beautiful Covers of Old Favorites!.......2007-04-23

I have been a fan of Cyndi's ever since I was a kid by overhearing a song or two on the radio by her. Her voice, her entire style was unique and powerful. When I heard she was seen as the poor man's Madonna as a I got older I found it an outrage. When it comes to popularity I guess Madonna did win, but to me Cyndi always was the better out of the two. I think Cyndi stands out more and also just says a lot more in her music than Madonna ever did. I think they're both great, but Cyndi wins and always has if I have to compare.

Anyway, I saw this in the library one day and decided before thinking of buying this I better listen to see how it would sound. I mean I wondered how all these guests singers would really click with Cyndi's songs. I am happy to say I am overall pleased with this album. Money Changes Everything really sounds beautiful, and I must say She Bop sounds excellent on this album- who knew how nice it would sound suddenly slowed down? All Through the Night with Shaggy (the same guy who made the hit Angel so long ago) actually works rather well and True Colors sounds even more beautiful than it originally did.

This whole album is beautiful, but there are a few parts on the album that fade with the bigger part of it. Time After Time unfortunately I think is better on the original- Sarah Mclachlan just doesn't work well with Cyndi as much as I thought she would. Girls Just Wanna Have Fun is kind of silly on this album- it does not match up with the original at all. I'll Be Your River and Fearless kind of drag as well. So there are some minor flaws yet I do really enjoy this album especially when it comes to her covering her very early hits. Above the Clouds I had never had the chance to really hear before either and it sounds just gorgeous I love it.

So I say if you're a fan of Cyndi then definitely try it out. The only thing I don't like about this album is that it doesn't have Sally's Pigeons. I would have really liked to hear her cover that song now but I guess there is always one song you love but doesn't make it on these sorts of albums. Nonetheless I highly recommend- Cyndi still sounds great.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Body.......2007-02-25

I am a huge Cyndi Lauper fan so I was ready to love this cd no matter what lol.
Fistly I decided to watch the dvd section.
I cant believe how amazing Cyndi is to this day and how she and her music have lived and tested the test of time and WON.
Cyndi still has that zanyness and eccentricity about her and she shows that in her videos and still manages to comes across with style and grace.
The dvd section includes 4 videos and behind-the-scences which show Cyndi in great fashion. Love her and loved it.
Secondly the music, how do I explain what I heard?
I really didnt know what to expect.
There are names i knew (Sarah and Jeff) and names I didnt know (Adam, Ani and Vivian) and names I would never expect to see on a Cyndi album let alone a duet (Shaggy).
But u know what? it worked.
I found myself hooked and thats what it does to u - it captures u.
There are different versions of some of her classics and playfullness of others.
And the duets are just fantastic.
A great body of work.

Absolutely fantastic !!Each song is unique and will surprise you with its new arrangement.
The dual disc is a great idea -just flip the cd over and watch videos of your favourite songs.Makes you feel that your getting value for the money.
This has become my all time favourite cd-and you may well give it as a gift to people as I have done .

4 out of 5 stars James Mcmurtry.......2007-05-16

Probably not your marquee musician, but never-the-less satisfing for people who enjoy this type of music...this is a very good cd with a down home sound and style.

5 out of 5 stars I love this guy.......2007-04-12

I have most of his albums...buy them just because they're by him. Whenever he shows up in the northwest, I'm there. Why he isn't more popular is a mystery, but I guess the same could be said for a lot of my favorite singer/songwriters...Shawn Colvin, Steve Earle (STEVE EARLE), Lucy Kaplansky, Eliza Gilkyson...but maybe that's not their intent. Thank God for that and them.

This is my favorite. I love the title song, and 'Right Here Now', my favorite of all his songs, just makes me smile.

4 out of 5 stars McMurtry is a great songwriter and a really good rocker........2007-03-10

McMurtry is a great songwriter and a really good rocker.

5 out of 5 stars This One's On My Eternal Playlist.......2006-03-10

I have all James McMurtry's albums, have seen him several times over various releases, and this is still the acme for me. This album continues to resonate after all these years. When my Ipod hits a song from this album in its shuffle I invariably turn the volume up. This is a beautiful album, but one that does not take a cheery view of life. These are not songs that will make you smile or brighten your day. McMurtry's world is populated with the desperate, the failed, and those just hanging on. The songs "Down Across the Delaware", "Levelland", "One More Winter", and "Where'd You Hide the Body" are so lovely and so bleak. And if you are ever driving across west Texas, this is part of the soundtrack you need to play (see also Terry Allen and Jimmie Dale Gilmore). Give a listen to a great singer-songwriter and his best album (so far).

5 out of 5 stars They Don't Understand Me...In Levelland.......2004-09-08

That about sums up McMurtry's angst and maybe why he writes such soulful lyrics. Levelland might be McMurtry's best song ever. The lyrics are outstanding. Other standout songs by McMurtry are 'No More Buffalo' and 'Peter Pan' on 'It Had To Happen'. This is a must have CD for someone getting into McMurtry and one of the best to start with for someone new to McMurtry. You might want to get this second after getting 'It Had To Happen'.

With a wider, brighter, and wilder sound than anything they've done in the past, this record adds walls of guitars, organs, and even a few "ballads" (a.k.a. slightly pretty songs) to the mix, while still retaining the gritty post-pop-punk sound for which they're globally famous. Recorded in the band's hometown of Portland, OR by Fugazi's Brendan Canty.

5 out of 5 stars The Thermals' best - smart, angry, listenable.......2007-06-18

As someone else noted, it's not a particularly subtle album, but the music is both driving and driven. I'm not generally a fan of political music, but this album rocks so hard and is so charged with energy it's practically a transcendent experience.

5 out of 5 stars hard rock - finally.......2007-06-14

This album rocks. Forget what that one-star reviewer said. The next time these guys come to The Bottom of the Hill in SF I won't miss it this time. There are only one or two just okay songs on this album. The rest rock. Play it loud.

1 out of 5 stars tripe and blather.......2007-05-05

For you young hipsters out there keen to tune in to the happening scene, you need to ask yourself whether you want to be an idiot while doing it. If you do intend to reduce your thinking to what is obvious, boring, or plain moronic, THIS IS THE ALBUM FOR YOU!!!

On the other hand, if you want to understand how the world works, turn away from the colossally stupid whenever you can - and a good start is not buying this piece of crap album.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite albums of 2006!.......2007-04-05

This is an ALBUM. The Thermals have not just put together random songs connected by nothing without any meaning. A breath of fresh air, this album is a perfect example of a lost art where the sum of the parts is not greater than the whole. Sarcastic, biting and revealing, The Body, the Blood, the Machine is a commentary on the relationship of our society and religion. The Thermals pull this off without being too irreverent and with just enough smarts combined with a more palatable sound than their previous albums. Every song on this album is lyrically and musically superb. I recommend listening to this album from first to last track, completely. This is an ALBUM.

5 out of 5 stars rock!!!.......2007-03-13

This album is f*ck*ng amazing. Listen to it while driving and you will get there faster. You will also be happier and cured of disease. Fun yet political and philosophical punk rock for the thinking man.

Listening to Joss Stone and her wonderful, foggy voice can take you to any where (you think) you would like to be. Great CD! A cut above.

4 out of 5 stars Joss Stone has real soul and heart.......2006-05-02

I would recommend adding Joss' CD to anyone's collection of soul music. I am disheartened with the haters who want to jump on the 'white girl stealing the black woman's sound' or 'she's too young to sing songs with real soul'. Listen to her music and ignore her color and age. She certainly has experienced love, loss, happiness and sadness, these are universal. "Mind, Body and Soul" has three songs out of 17 that I don't care for, but the tracks that really hit with me make up for that. "Understand" was the song I first heard and Joss' voice laid over the starting lonely arpeggiated guitar caught my attention and the careful addition of instruments and backing vocals as the song continues builds the energy and tension. Listen to the backing vocals and you know the production group understands soul. "Right to be Wrong" evokes Janis Joplin with a Gladys Knight vibe. "Jet Lag" speaks to the intoxication of love - years back Lisa Stansfield would have recorded this. "Spoiled" is a Slow Jam if I have ever heard one. "Don't Cha Wanna Ride" is just a feel good old school ditty laid over the "Soulful Strut" sample. I saw a reviewer on another site ask 'Why did they put a song about a car in the middle of the album?' - The guy needs to get a clue, the song is not about a car - it is a metaphor! The song is a girl shaking her hips and smiling. It makes me want to go buy a convertible and take my wife on a drive and picnic by the oceanside. Imagine my surprise when I watched the included DVD videos and the video for this song is set along a beach drive! "Torn and Tattered", "Killing Time", "Less is More" and "The Right Time" make my play list. Skipped tracks are "You Had Me", "God Only Knows" and "Call it Christmas".

5 out of 5 stars A YOUNG JANIS JOPLIN.......2006-02-10

THIS IS A VERY SOULFUL DISC. JOSS'S VOICE HAS A HOARSE, FULL
BODIED R&B SOUND. VERY UNIQUE. SHE SEEMS SHE SHOULD HAVE BEEN
BORN IS THE 70'S. THIS ALBUM HAS A STORY TO TELL. IT IS WELL WORTH THE MONEY. SHE SOUNDS LIKE A YOUNG JANIS JOPLIN.

5 out of 5 stars Body Moves: Non Stop Disco volume 1.......2007-05-27

I guess I was looking for something different than the other girls were looking for. I LOVE this CD. I go to an exercise class every day and this gets my blood pumping more than the music they play there.
When I put it on at home, I fly through the work that needs doing because of the beat. My adrenalin really gets pumping. I just bought the second disc in this collection.
Depressed? Throw this one on and you will feel great. Take it from one who knows.
And the music is fun to listen to.

1 out of 5 stars aerobic music that didnt work.......2007-05-15

I was disappointed when I found that I couldnt use this CD in my aerobic class. It says it is non-stop, yes, but it doesnt flow from one song to the other with the proper 32 ct beat. I like the music but that doesnt matter when I cant use it for what it was intended for.
Very disappointing.

1 out of 5 stars not worth it.......2006-05-05

the music was so slow paced, there is no way you can use this cd for a cardio workout. not worth a penny.

1 out of 5 stars Body Moves.......2005-12-12

Pathetic for a cardio workout tape. I would like to see Amazon start noting the BPM on workout CD's.

4 out of 5 stars fun music.......2005-08-22

I bought this CD to jog to and I like it. The songs are fun and upbeat. What I like best about it, is that there is no breaks between songs, it goes from one song right into the next one. It would make a great CD for an aerobics class also.

4 out of 5 stars Four Letter Lie ~Let Your Body Take Over~.......2007-01-06

Is it any surprise that a band that seems to have fashioned themselves after Underoath are being produced by Matt Goldman (of Underoath fame)? Let Your Body Take Over manages to find the small niche that Underoath missed; the progression from They're Only Chasing Safety and Define the Great Line.

Four Letter Lie combines the guitar heavy tone of Define the Great Line (""Full Tilt Boogie"") with the pop hooks (""Naked Girl Avalanche"") that TOCS was filled with. But don't be fooled, Underoath isn't the only band that these guys are borrowing from thought as it's hard to hear ""Feel Like Fame"" and not pick up a Fall Out Boy vibe.

It's almost impossible at this point to invent anything new in the screamo genre and most bands realize that. Bands are refining their sound as opposed to redefining it and with some bands that works just fine. Four Letter Lie falls soundly in that category--they're not doing anything new and probably wont do anything new in the future--but what they do is high grade pop screamo at it's very best!

4 out of 5 stars Great band, but mixing and producing needs work!.......2006-11-02

I am a avid listener of the band Four Letter Lie. Despite the fact that they do tend to lean towards a Underoath tone and do have many of the same kinds of riffs and styles, I have to say this band also brings many other different feels to the music. The first thing that got me hooked to Four Letter Lie was seeing them live. For many, the fact that the sound seems like a underoath wannabe is immediately overpowered if they do not experience them in a show. The great melodys they pull in to this record really makes each song replayable a million times without losing interest. Starting out the album was the song "Full Tilt Boogie" which couldn't have been a better choice. This song screamed power and heavyness from the start and the fact that the chorus was harmonized made it all the more tolerable to non "screamo" fans. The second song kept up the momentum and still incorporated much of the screaming from vocalist Brian Nagan. By the third song, their first single "feel like fame", things were unfortunately toned down. Now this is the song that confused me very much. I will admit it is a very catchy song and many great aspects of the band are shown within it, but for me when I got a demo of their one song and heard this, I was alittle disappointed. I was expecting heavy guitars alot of screaming and alittle harmony tracks right off the bat, but this song seemed to be a total genre change. Although there are a few scream tracks on this song, I can honestly say it is not the best track on the album. The next song up was called " The Ordinary Life" that was previously released on their older demo. Basicly everything was the same in this song but I like the build up throughout the song and I was hooked on this song long before "Let Your Body Take Over" was released. The next song "It Was Business Doing Pleasure" at first did not appeal to me because it is just a interlude that is repetative with the same chord progessions and vocal lines, but after many times of listening to the cd fully, it fits in very nicely with the songs around it. Track 8 entitled "Baby, Your My Bad Habit" is another re-release of their old song "Lets Call It A Night" on their previous demo. This song was also pretty much the same but the snyth tracks added in it makes it so much heavier and brings a cool feel to the mix. The next song "Firecracker" was a nice slow track and had nice guitar parts in it but again was alittle out of place in the mix of all the heavy songs. Another re-recorded song, "Tell me about Everything", was such an amazing new transformation from their older song. I was so impressed with the intensity the song started out with and the various guitar effects used to make it sound a bit different. The other great thing about this song is the breakdown where Brian Nagans vocals really come in to play and the drums and the guitar are so heavy its an undeniable mixture. Next up was the song "Cowboys and Indians" which had a guest track from Doug from The Sleeping. Although this song really has no structure and you can't distinguish what is a chorus or a verse or a breakdown, the song is very heavy and and an angrier song. The last song song "Rocky Loves Emily" is yet another step away from the style of their songs but remains quite heavy and ends the cd very nicely with the closing orchestral tracks added in. Musically, this cd was a good accomplishment but the mixing and production of the cd seemed to kill alot of the power in the album. Even though Matt Goldman (producer of copeland, underoath)was doing the producing on this album, it turned out so bland and dry that I was almost turned off. The guitars seem to be thin and lifeless and very quiet in the mix. The drums are also very quiet in the mix and seem to have a boxy and tame sound to them. The vocals seem to be recorded very well and were perfect in the mix. The only thing that was really way to loud was the bass guitar. It seemed to be turned up louder than any of the guitars and in no way made the mix in the song sound better. Bass lines are meant to be a glue that holds together the drums and the rest of the guitars but should not overpower everything else. Other than these disappointments, I was happy with this bands music and cannot wait to see the production and sound of their next one!

I like hardcore & death metal & I like the Circle Jerks & the Dead Kennedys. Jello Biafra, Dead Ks, is on the freedom of speech track, so I checked it out. Biafra's a cartoon today, but I loved this album. The musical force blended with the political statements and the deadly accurate aim of twisted humor would give the Cohen brothers ideas.

I am white. I hate rap. I love Body Count. best tracks include body count's in the house, body count, now sports, the winner loses, voodoo, kkk b*tch, body count anthem, and of course... COP KILLER

i know they don't sell it with cop killer anymore but listen to me, it is the best song you will ever hear in your life. I follow it's example often and i'm tellin you it feels good to stick it to the man in such an extreme manner.

buy this album, or steal it, whatever.

4 out of 5 stars Suprisingly Kick ass Hard core from Ice T.......2006-06-03

I'd never heard Body Count before just recently. Of Course when I was a kid I'd heard of the song "Cop Killer" thought it to be some lame piddling gangsta rap garbage I hate with a blood boiling rage. Yet going about on the internet I saw a song "Cop Killer" by Body Count I was like who the hell is Body Count? So I played it. It was one of the most kick ass songs I'd heard in a long time I got chills up and down my spine. I went to find out about this group and what I found out suprised me. It was Ice T's Hard core Metal band. What? So it wasn't gangsta rap but a metal song. I had to hear more. I loved it. I bought this album and haven't regreted it. It is one of the best metal albums I have. Its just aggressive and driving all the way through to the end. It sucks that the record company bowed to the lifestyle facists and took the song "Cop Killer" off of it. Look I don't agree with the cop killing stuff and no sane person would. This whole album is over the top and the muisicians in this band like Ernie C. have been way over looked. But even without "Cop Killer" its still a head banging album. Pick up this album now.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best metal rap albums ever recorded.......2005-12-31

I support Freedom of Speech and freedom of speech means Freedom of speech. I was fortunate enough to obtain a copy with "Cop Killer" before the controversy. Now with the releases by Eminem and 50 Cent- the ban of the song "Cop Killer" is hypocritical. I took Law Enforcement with the intention to become a police officer and I can distinguish between fiction and reality. Ice-T is speaking about a increasing problem in society. There are many police officers being killed in the line of duty and it is hearbreaking and my thoughts and prayers are with the families of the murdered officers. Anyway, the Body Count album includes great songs "There Goes the Neighbourhood and The Winner Loses".

This album is great- but I would try to get the original version with "Cop Killer" on the cd. Perhaps, the record label will reissue the album because with 50 Cent and Enimen pushing the envelope- this ban seems hypocritical.

5 out of 5 stars Body Count - self-titled (Sire).......2005-12-31

Remember when this CD has caused SO much trouble for the label, band and ANY record store that would dare to carry the disc. Then, all copies were recalled and re-released MINUS the notorious track "Cop Killer".Yeah,it's all history now,but I went to see Body Count with Ice-T when both bands did their seperate set and all patrons HAD to pass a metal detector.Talk about a concert-first.With or without the cut, this self-titled CD is a must-have for any and all true metal fans. Some of the better cuts are "Body Count's In The House","BBK B*tch","There Goes The Neighborhood" and "Freedom Of Speech".Recommended.

After 16 years in the pop diva business, Kylie Minogue doesn't bother reinventing herself. Maybe that's why Body Language sounds so effortlessly appealing. Confidence permeates the record's savvy mix of modern and retro, implanting slinky tunes like "Slow" into your brain's guilty pleasure section. Aided greatly by producer Kurtis Mantronik's resourceful touch, sparse electroclash rhythms blend easily with Minogue's shrewd pop sense, milking it for maximum catchiness. True, Kylie's barely-there voice remains a weak spot, and her attempt at rap on "Secret (Take You Home)" doesn't quite work (though it's better than you might think). More often, those helium tones are put to effective use; her sighing vocal on "Chocolate" is pure, sweet decadence. Prince himself might be a little envious of how well Mantronik lays down the 1999-style electro-funk, as tracks like "Still Standing" glide along on computer soul and the singer's practiced tease. And therein lies Body Language's most impressive feat: It makes Minogue's plastic sex appeal sound not just like the most natural thing in the world, but like an honest-to-God artistic statement. --Matthew Cooke

4 out of 5 stars Sign Language needed as well as Body Language.......2007-03-19

"Body Language" was always going to be a difficult album to listen to following the previous success of Kylie Minougue's No.1 U.K. and No. 3 U.S. album, "Fever". For die hard Kylie fans, the album was fine and included the "Breaking the mould" U.K. No.1 "Slow", but interest soon dissipated after that. I thoroughly enjoyed the album, but I would be considered one of the "die hards". In the U.S. the album didn't live up the expectations of it's predecessor, which is a shame because that means it has become over-looked, sandwiched between the "Fever" album and the "Ultimate Kylie" double album. A new re-listening of the album will guarantee that you will find it more of a surprise than you thought of it before!

5 out of 5 stars Her best album.....it is a MILLION times better than Fever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-03-15

Forget Fever already, it WAS a good album, but Listen to Body Language it is a million times better, hands down. Every song is well thought out and has a darker, sexier edge than Fever. Fever is just fluff compaired to this album. Those of you that think that she should have stuck with the sound from Fever are all wrong....an artist should grow and change with each and every album (as Madonna does). Kylie has it all right here is so many ways....Fever was a great tounge in check sugar-pop album, and Body language is a Sexy, sassy pop album with an edge. Some reviewers have said that all the songs sound the same, NOT TRUE....ARE you people deaf??? Also, Slow is a great song but surely NOT the best song on the CD as many have said (think for yourself at least once in your life...just because it was a hit, doesn't make it the best song. Quit being a follower and use your own head, no, no,no to sheep...don't be one.) , "I Feel for You" is the best song in my eyes, fun sexy and catchy. "After Dark" is another great track one of her best songs EVER!!!!!! Kylie has made a perfect record, and I hope she makes more and more. I hope she changes with each and every album...because that is what keeps people intrested. Thanks Kylie you ROCK!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Sexy and lush.......2007-02-20

In the time when pop music is becoming something to run from, when even the younger generations will choose rock bands instead of Britney Spears, there is one little lady that is still proud of what she is doing. Unlike Madonna, who constantly re-invents herself (always gorgeously, of course), Kylie Minogue decides to accept the pop territory as her art, and having peed on it for a long time, there's no way she's going anywhere.
So, here comes "Body Language", Kylie's last studio album. The first thing you notice is that it's much more retro - on the cover, Kylie is being sexy in that old-fashioned way, where it's not about how much you expose, than HOW you expose it. Wow, what a way to age! And the songs are the same way - although they are undoubtedly sexy, she merely suggests her sexiness instead of talking about how she does it (here that, Britney?).
The album opens with the minimal "Slow", which are essentially clusters of beats and hooks linked by Kylie's whisper. It is catchy and a great opening. From then on, it goes through a number of songs which all stand for themselves as great tracks (especially "Secret (Take You Home)" and "Promises", which are both retro and modern at the same time). "Red Blooded Woman" is very hip and upbeat and "Chocolate" might as well be the best track, capturing the lush feel of chocolate melting in one's mouth, and just like the chocolate, the song melts in a sexiest way possible. "Someday" is similar, very calm and lullaby-ish, as it suggests the end of the album. There are also two bonus tracks, "Cruise Control" and "You Make Me Feel", which are both great.
Snap-snap for Kylie Minogue. She has achieved stardom, and is now confident enough in herself to release a very moderate, yet accomplished album. It's the same old Kylie, and she's not going anywhere. "Body Language" proves it.

4 out of 5 stars Kylie rocks!.......2007-02-03

Has only about 4 good songs, other songs are ok. Got it cause of "body language" song.

3 out of 5 stars It's grown on me.......2007-01-19

Forget "La, La, La". There are no melodies here. Sadly, this is Blah, Blah,Blah. As a supporter of "Impossible Princess" I was looking forward to what I thought was a more expressive, edgier, still pop Kylie.
"Body Language" is different, but not expressive, hardly edgy, and not pop. The songs blur from one repetitive note to the next. Adjectives like "minimal" are being kind. Kylie could be anybody on this album. She is lacking the expressive and unique qualities of "Paper Dolls", "Some Kind of Bliss", "I Don't need anyone", "Disco Down", "You're Disco needs you", "Too Far", et al. I heard this album was an attempt to break America. It won't. The US "Fever" release missed the boat by excluding proposed inclusion of "Light Years" hits. "Body Language" waves the boat further away. I applaud Kylie's transformation abilities and independent nature. However, this album has no appeal to American Kylie fans who have little grasp of her previous images and abilities. Further, there is nothing new or mildly exciting to offer the American audience at large, regardless of their prior Kylie knowledge. Call me a slave to pop, but I like my water wet and my Kylie energetic. One can only hope that if the Kylie camp learned nothing from "Kylie Minogue", "Body Language" will teach them. Then we can look forward to the geniuses that will mirror the brilliant creativity, energies, and VARIETY of "Impossible Princess" and "Light Years". Cut to...

3 Years later, This album has grown on me. I still find it lacking but can admit that my intial thoughts may have been short sighted. I prefer the funkier sounds of "Red Blooded Woman", "Cruise Control"- EXCELLENT, "City Games", and "I Feel For You" to the breathy, atmospheric production of "Loving Days", "Someday", and "Promises". "Chocolate" is a gem on this album. It is similar to "Promises" but succeeds as a ballad with a sexy dance rhythm.
