Born and raised in Arima, Trinidad, Sherwin Gardner began singing at a young age and quickly learned to integrate his faith with the contemporary music of his Caribbean island. The result is a uniquely woven tapestry of various urban sounds and Caribbean cultures with no-compromise lyrics and sound doctrine.

A bestseller in Trinidad and Tobago, Sherwin is by far the most proficient and versatile deejay/vocalists in the Caribbean gospel arena. This diverse album kicks off the boiling pot with a hard hitting soca tune, then transitions smoothly into roots reggae, hardcore dancehall, hip hop, soca, jamoo, and techno ventures. Each song includes a signature style and sound that is undeniably Caribbean and unquestionably Sherwin. In his powerful songs, whether in a relaxed mood or over his riddim-driven tonic, Sherwin's sweet melodies and ballad bubblers are guaranteed to encourage and uplift your spirit.

On LEANING, Sherwin comes correct with his versatile Midas voice, sailing against the edgy musical tracks with sweet soaring lines that compliment his oft raucous deejay vocals. An amazing freestyler, this potent lyricist dips skillfully in and out of his raspy deejay voice with absolute precision.

Get ready to jump up to these rhythmic jams packed with carefree energy and sunshine melodies, all while tackling serious spiritual matters. As a proficient stage performer, Gardner knows how to keep an audience in the palm of his hand and get any crowd moving. With LEANING, Sherwin is sure to move both your body and your soul.

5 out of 5 stars Music Poetry Romance.......2007-03-08

Don't be put off by the negative comments judge for yourdelf as I did. I found this by accident looking for some romantic music for my lady and that is exactly what I found. Now I need to see the film. The music conjures up such a feeling, relax listen and enjoy. Imagine moonlight skys, the sea gently lapping along the shoreline, candlelit dinners with the one you love. This will leave you with a warm feeling and if not then you will not know romance. The poetry is warm sensitive and well read, a bonus to the CD.

4 out of 5 stars Il Postino (Le postier).......2007-02-01

Excellent album. En plus de la musique originale du film, plusieurs lectures de poëmes de Pablo Neruda par des acteurs et actrices de renom, sur fond musical.

5 out of 5 stars True Romantic Cd - www.michaelpalmer.net.......2006-12-18

If you are a true romantic, you will love this cd, even IF you are not a fan of some of the famous stars who read the poetry - I know I am not a fan of most of these actors, but it does not take away from the excellence of this soundtrack. If you like this cd, please look at the tv series Beauty and the Beast cd. It is called "Of Love and Hope". It is a must have cd.

4 out of 5 stars lovely!.......2006-09-07

The musical score is haunting without resorting to melancholy. It befits Pablo Neruda's timeless poems. Highly recommended, even if not all of the poetry readings are well executed.

1 out of 5 stars WHAT DID THEY DO?!.......2006-04-01

What is this trash?! This film is beautiful but the soundtrack sucks big time. They should have used the actor who was playing Pablo Neruda to read the poems in ITALIAN! It's a beautiful and romantic language but no..they screw it up with actors from the U.S. OMG! I HATE JULIA ROBERTS! she makes the soundtrack even worse. I spit on this cd! believe me..I would so give this trash 0 stars but amazon doesn't allow it!

Product Description

In the contemporary jazz world - where guitars and saxes currently reign supreme - flutist Bradley Leighton brings a fresh, new voice to this popular genre of music. Upbeat, funky urban grooves and teh soulful, mellow sound of his alto flute combine to make this collection of tunes a refreshing change of pace in a sometimes mundane and perfunctory genre.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Funk Revisited.......2006-12-01

With the release of the new Album "East Coast Project" with Jason Miles coming in 2007, I decided to revisit Bradley Leighton's early 2006 release "Back to the Funk". To hear a flutist take lead on this project brings back fond memories of Dave Valentin, Yusef Lateef, Bobbi Humphrey, Herbie Mann, Hubert Laws, Alexander Zonjic, Frank Wess and others back in the day. Bradley engineers a refreshing blend of old school and new school contemporary (funk) jazz.

I agree with the Pacific Coast Jazz press release which stated: "Back To The Funk's robust horn arrangements ricochet off of slamming funk beats while his alto flute angelically rises above the gritty grooves on tracks like `Runaway,' `Clear Blue Skies' and the title cut. Leighton chills on sensual mid-tempo trysts such as `Midnight Affairs' and `Soul Moon.' Strolling back in time, Leighton dusted off three gems to revisit: Stevie Wonder's "Love Light In Flight," Ray, Goodman & Brown's `Special Lady' and Bread's soulful `Make It With You,' which were deep fried in a vat of funk. Real guitar, bass, drums, and plenty of sax, trumpet and trombone help give the record an authentic, warm feel. "

With that said, whether you are a jazz enthusiast, funk master extraordinaire or R&B listener, you will enjoy this visit "Back To The Funk", I sure did. ~the JazzeOne

5 out of 5 stars Soulful and Beautiful.......2006-07-03

I really love this CD. Leighton's alto flute gives such a rich lush sound to these tunes, particularly the pop renditions I Want to Make it With You, Love Light in Flight, and Special Lady. His playing blends so beautifully with the horns and the rhythm section. If you grew up with Tower of Power and Earth Wind and Fire, you will love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth and Funky.......2006-02-12

I've never heard him do anything funky but he did this time. This is a "groovy" cd. From start to finish I thought everything was fantastic. I even liked some of the programmed drums. However, there was actually a drummer on this one. The accompanying artists were great. The sound of the funky trombone and soulful trumpet along with Bradley's flute makes some cool sounds. This cd is very different from his other works. I really enjoyed this one. I hope he does something similar in the future. Check this one out and you will be grooving with some smooth funky jazz. The Stevie Wonder cut, Love light in flight is a smash.

Female fronted Industrial Dance merged with Synthpop, Darkwave elements, and fiery vocals. They've been called one of the most original bands who manage to combine passion and hard hitting electronics that pour out onto the dance floor. Their new album "forward..." captures their 3 year evolution since their last release with catchy melodies, striking lyrics, and amazing remixes by Assemblage 23, Fiction 8, FLesh Field, and Oneiroid Psychosis.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Electronic at its best.......2004-01-12

If you've heard The Azoic's previous albums, this one may come as a partial surprise. They have moved from a slower, darker sound to a more dance floor-oriented sound - and it's a complete success in my opinion. Some tracks are truly outstanding, such as Progression and Redemption. A great value.

5 out of 5 stars This is no paradise, but you'll be mystified.......2003-02-15

I was jumping into Azoic's homepage by chance and listened to a few of their clippings over the internet and was haunted by Kristine's dark and luring vocal immediately. I bought it over the net immediately.

Claiming their music as Fallen Poetics, you can find beautiful and thought-provoking lyrics along with dance floor beat. You are assumed in "Lost", as if you were waving your body in a dark disco...all alone though.

"I know the healing is painful and the heartache unbearable,

but don't dismiss me so quickly until you see inside of me" ~ Lost

Lovers' words....Azoic talks about love in "Lost", about God in "Redemption", about war-crime in "Crave into You", about relationship in "Harsh Reality", about rage in "Evolution", about sex in "Not Justified"... The words are written in a poetic, shadowed, intense feeling way.

"I cannot separate the past from what could last. Or what might always be." ~ Harsh Reality

"And it's coming inside of me, oh my hands are tied.
My soul is being cleansed now, but I am not justified." ~ Not Justified

An interesting combination with the high discotheque electronic dance beat, Kristine's vocal keeps your body wave all night. I highly recommend the album. Looking for more from Azoic...

5 out of 5 stars Progression..........2002-01-12

Since last we checked in with the Azoic (Where Broken Angels Lie) one band member moved to Arizona and another left the group entirely. With no small bit of effort lead singer Kristy Venrick and keyboardist Steve Laskarides decided to engage in the difficult task of continuing work on their music despite the long distance between them.

The new material the band put together for this, their third release is somewhat different from previous efforts. A very deliberate foray has been made into the realm of EBM (in the vein of such bands as Funker Vogt and :wumpscut: ) which changes the tempo and overall tone of their sound. Gone are the shifting sonic voids and cold synths so prevalent in "the divine suffering" and (to a lesser extent) "Where Broken Angels Lie." Instead one finds "forward..." to be rich in very danceable hooks and pulsing beats. Kristy's vocal work has also changed a bit, and while her ethereal verses are missed she still retains the rich emotion and sensual appeal in her voice. On "forward..." she also carries the nearly the entire vocal load herself, with Steve taking over only on the Matrix-esque "Evolution" track. Despite these changes in sound the end result retains the identity of the band very well; never does one get the feeling the lead singer has simply changed groups.

With 7 original tracks and 4 quality remixes the CD has a lot to offer. Anyone who enjoyed the Azoic's prior work will likely be glad just to get their hands on more work by this innovative group, and fans of EBM, electronica, Darkwave and Goth would do well to pick it up. In a genre that at times grows stale with scraping male vocals and over-distorted noise it's definitely a step "forward" to hear more beat driven EBM with such a talented female lead.

5 out of 5 stars Best music for teaching young dancers out there.......2005-01-04

I have danced professionally and taught ballet for over ten years. Schultz understands dancers and what they need. The tempos and musicality are perfect. This CD is good for any level but, it is excellent for teaching younger dancers. The music is very easy to count without being boring. It will help them to do the steps right just by listening to the music and the accents. The jacket cover is also very well done and teacher-friendly. It lists the steps the music is intended for and the length of each piece. He gives each step two tracks (ie. enough music for both sides). It is a delight to have ballet music that is enjoyable to listen.

5 out of 5 stars Real Praise.............2005-02-07

Listen...this is real praise caribbean style.. sherwin has it locked. The reggeae/soca feel of this track will have any christian rocking... check out "I Worship You". Real hard core roots reggae rock. This is a good CD...

5 out of 5 stars Hotness!!!.......2004-11-29

Being from the Virgin Islands, reggae/dancehall/soca riddims are all part of daily life--except when you're a Christian. Then, the constant lyrics dealing with "gun talk", "slackness", etc. are no longer options. But then you have an album like this which gives you the BEST of both worlds: powerfully uplifting lyrics and the "wikkidest chunes" to back them up!

The best part of this project is Sherwin's VERSATILITY!!! He goes from [mostly] dancehall, to hip-hop and even throws in a techno track! He is truly a blessed vocalist, though you can easily hear liknesses to Capleton, Anthony B and Sizzla.

ANYONE who loves Caribbean/ reggae music should check this out! God bless!

4 out of 5 stars Review written by Native Jamaican.......2004-04-27

This is a very good album. Even though the style of music is from Jamaica, Reggae/Dancehall. Sherwin does well to use this style of music and sounds very Jamaican although he isn't.
The Lyrics are very conscious and positive.
However, although i give it 4 stars i would give his latest one, 10 stars out of 5 ("Anointed"). Out of the 19 songs i listent o 17, all the time. Most people you think would decrease their number on their next album or the quality, however Sherwin Steps it up a BIG Notch! Amazon.com should get that album, that and PapaSan God and I are an excellent combination, that would expose anyone to the wide range of styles within Reggae and Dancehall music in Jamaica.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2004-04-26

I have bought this album for at least ten of my friends and everyone loves it! This is an album that you can listen to from beginning to end and enjoy it all. Lyrics are thoughtful and provoking and minister to the heart. The music is pumping and gets you moving and brings you into the presence of God! I wish I could tell the world about this project - definitely a winner! My brother who hates Reggae has to admit that Sherwin knows how to get it done!

5 out of 5 stars Bold Lyrics.......2003-02-27

Thanks Bro. Sherwin for your Bold testimony of who Jesus is and who Jesus is in your life. Sherwin's music & lyrics wanna make your dance & shout for joy of this exciting life as a Christian. I'm a big fan of Christian Carribean music and Sherwin is a must have, even if you're not familiar with this style of music.

2 out of 5 stars Talent sometimes falters........2005-10-28

This album makes Wes Anderson sound like a lightweight. He isn't. He's one of the few Marsalis acolytes, along with Eric Reed, who absorbed the classics and carved an original voice. This live session followed two solid studio releases, and he hasn't recorded as a leader since. That's unfortunate, because this is a sour note to leave hanging in the air.

When most players record live albums, they tape a dozen shows and cherry-pick the tracks for release. I suspect Anderson decided beforehand that he was going to record a Vanguard album, but he couldn't book a week-long engagement -- so he just taped one gig and pressed the CDs. The result is thoroughly underwhelming.

At its weakest moments, this album sounds like a saxophonist playing along to Music Minus One. It peaks occasionally, and probably wasn't a bad gig to attend; but there's a higher standard if you're going to release a CD, and this music never comes close. Don't waste your money -- and don't let this form your opinion of Wes Anderson. Check him out elsewhere.

Wess has a GREAT band in this album. The rhythm section is hot, but very responsive, and sensitive at the same time. This album has some INCREDIBLE playing by Wess. My favorite tunes are Snake Charmer, and Star-Crossed Lovers. This is a GREAT ALBUM.

      5 out of 5 stars Playful Warmdaddy.......2000-03-16

Warmdaddy takes a different slant. Although he is well versed in traditonal jazz, he molds the formal structures into playful toons. Often you have to smile. African cowboy, for instance takes a cowboy jingle and makes it jazz. In the serpent, you can feel the snake climb your leg. In the Black Cat, on the Ways of Warmdaddy, the sax creats the image of a cat. So vivid, my dog gets angry.

5 out of 5 stars Comes Out Swinging!!!.......2004-12-30

This recording features stellar playing, and a good mix of tunes. I had never heard of Marchel Ivery but oh man can he play that big brassy in your face style. Joey DeFrancesco is great but there's no suprise right? Clint Strong, no tempo can stop his fluid classic bop lines, however he's somewhat buried in the mix compared to the others, and I would love to hear him on a full arch top versus the Les Paul he always uses on dates. Over all, an excellent album.

Put four more than gifted musicians together, place them in the relax mood of an informal and unexepected session and let the tape roll. What you've got here is a burning, hard swinging straight ahead jazz record. Marchel Ivery is surely a great tenor man, playing whith autority and respect of the tradition. There's a very good choice of tunes (mostly standards)and with Joey DeFrancesco onboard you can't be wrong. The sound is very good and have this lively and warm feeling that is one of Leaning House trade mark. In fact, this is one of the very best tenor-organ combo that i've heard so far. If you like 100% swing, home cooking jazz, buy this one: This is The Real Thing!

5 out of 5 stars Back to the Future.......2000-07-26

This is, quite simply, a wonderful debut CD. Edwards builds confidantly on the late 50s early 60s "vernacular" of Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, et al. and gives it his own very contemporary spin. Brilliant, haunting, tasty, indomitable all come to mind as ways to describe Edwards' original tunes, esp. Duke of Duckland and Dee-Gee's Shuffle (I'm less fully enamoured of the covers, though I like them).
