5 out of 5 stars Chilled on ice..........2003-04-24

This (and the follow-up "Open Space 2") has to be one of the best albums I own. It's mellow, chilled, sparkling, and all in all a great collection of tracks from brilliant artists. There are a couple of tracks I'm not too keen on - obvious soundtrack ones ("X-Files" and "Rose" particularly) are out of place here, but with artists like William Orbit, Moby, Endorphin and Enigma, along with timeless classical pieces I find it difficult to really fault this album.

There's enough variety in the pieces to suit almost all tastes and all occasions. Definitely a must have for your CD collection!

5 out of 5 stars a pleasure for the ear.......2002-12-03

My first encounter with this compilation was at my sister's in Australia, when I was there on a holiday. I was sold immediately. The mixture of modern music, like Moby's, film scores (e.g James Horner) as well as music used in commercials (e.g. Magnum and I believe Peugeot, though I'm not sure of that, but it doens't matter anyway) and classical music makes this compilation less boring than others around. Jarres' "Oxygen" is one of my favourites on this album along with "porcelain" and "slip into something more comfortable". These songs can be found on other chillout albums as well (though not very often on the same album) so you might wonder why you should spend such an amount of money on this specific album. I've already given the answer: it's the mix of different kinds of music, which makes that you can lay down and just listen and relaxe, or you can use the CD as background music, while reading a book, cooking diner (or trying to) and of course while you're eating. If you're more into the chillout music one can hear in Loungeclubs, than this is not the album for you. If you're interested in an evening to relaxe and to take some time for yourself then this is a CD I highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Slip into something more comfortable and relax to this cd.......2002-04-06

I love this 2 cd compilation of chillout music. This is by far one of the best compilations I have heard. There is another album simply called "The Classic Chillout Album" which has a few of the same songs from this imported compilation but loses steam with the tracks by Jill Scott and Maxwell. Now while I had to pay a hefty price for this album I definitely wanted this album because of some of the tracks from Everything But the Girl, Chicane, Jean Michel Jarre, and Moby, not to mention different versions of my favorite classical/baroque songs such as "The Flower Duet From Lakme", "Pachelbel's Canon", and "Fur Elise". Granted that songs like William Orbit's "Adagio For Strings" and Moby's "Porcelain" are pretty common tracks to be found on any chillout album, I still love those songs to death.

My breathe was taken away by the gorgeous fragile melodies of the Dream Mix of "Adagio". While the classical aspect of the song remains intact with the stringed instruments there is an element of ambient music that flows gracefully thoughout the song. The combination is simply breathtaking. My other personal favorite song off this album is Chicane's "No Ordinary Morning". I can listen to that song a hundred times and never tire of it. The angelic vocals by Tracy Ackerman is simply moving and a timeless classic for me. Faithless' "Drifting Away" is one of my favorite songs off their first album "Reverance". I just love the operatic vocals fused together with trip hop beats.

"Open Space: Classic Chillout Album" is definitely my favorite chillout compilation of all the chillout compilations I have acquired in the past couple of months. The song selection on this compilation is far better and stronger than some I have seen. I love the combination of trip hop, ambient, and classical music all on two cds. I don't think there is another compilation that could outdo "Open Space".

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing Collection.......2002-02-28

This particular compilation received so much publicity in the U.K. and Ireland that it actually went to number one in both countries. It's a pretty bland collection of chill-out tracks that may serve as a very gentle introduction to this type of music-or if you were to be cynical may serve as the perfect background music to a 30 something dinner party.Unfortunately I was taken in by the endless publicity it received and ended up buying the c.d.From the first moments I listened to the overall mix I knew I wouldn't be coming back to this c.d.,save maybe listening to the odd track.

C.D. 1 is far the better of the two c.d.'s.In fact it starts off so well with Kinobe's excellent lounge classic "Slip Into Something More Comfortable".It's a really great track and those who like this track should really check out their latest c.d. "Versebridgechorus"-which has more of the same only even better. The first 4 tracks are excellent-Groove Armada's best chill out track "At The River"-keeps the sound pretty similar.Things become a little quicker with E.B.T.G's classic mix of "Missing"-thankfully they use the Todd Terry mix.It is a problem that in this c.d. some of the mixes chosen are very poor to say the least.I Monster's reworking of 60's hit Daydream is next and even though I prefer the Beta Band's use of the sample-it's still a great track. Then things go downhill a bit.The music becomes very bland almost 'hotel lobby musak'.Why they chose the original version of William Orbit's Adagio For Strings just fails me-the Ferry Corsten mix is way better. At least Corsten tries to make it into a dance track-where as the original just mimics Barber's classical piece just too much.I just think classical music is best left using a full orchestra and not a few synths. This becomes a problem throughout this c.d. as there is far too many tracks of classical music done on synths(far too many to simply list here). The Beloved mix of Sweet Harmony is once again the wrong choice-they should have used the album track. In fact you can skip on through the t.v. themes, etc that dominate the middle part of the c.d. and skip to Moby's "Novio",Morcheeba's "World Looking In"-which was the only decent track from their last ill-fated and poorly received album. The always excellent Chicane finish things off nicely with the closing track being the best chill out song of last year-Jakatta's "American Dream".How many different compilations encompassing all sorts of dance genres did this track feature on this year?

C.D. 2 is very poor indeed. The opening track is a shocker.Thankfully I have Deep Forest's "Sweet Lullaby" already because this mix makes it seem like a terrible track-believe me this track is not as bad as it sounds here. There are some nice surprises on this c.d.Art Of Noise is a great reminder of how they were ahead of their time. It's amazing to think this was done way back in the 80's.Just shows what a genius Trevor Horn is.Enigma's "Sadness" is still a purely magical track of Gregorian Chant and dance beats. They should have used the vocal's of David Syvian to accompany Sakamoto's "Merry Christmas.."The Chicane track is glorious again.Delirium's silence I wish they'd used the Sarah McLachlan vocals also. The rest of this c.d. with excerpts from films such as Titanic and The Mission is pretty awful.

They targeted this c.d. for people who chill out after a heavy night clubbing.I'm afraid that the only type of club people who like this c.d. know about are ones that have 18 holes, bunkers and lots of silly trousers!Bland, very bland!!
