Lemar's voice is soulful! Takes you back in the day to good, quality R&B! This is now my favorite CD and it will be hard for any other artist to top my list. I am purchasing more for family and friends.

this is a Really good cd... i originally bought the cd because i really liked the song If There's Any Justice, which is one of my favorites on the cd. Lemar has a Really nice voice, i'm not sure who to compare his voice to...you just have to listen to the cd to see for yourself.
There are some songs i like more than others but Time to Grow, Feels Right, and What If are my other favorites...
There's a good variety of songs, some upbeat and some mellow and slow... the lyrics in the songs are really good too.

i owned a copy of lemar's time to grow and i listened to it everyday until a friend of mine took it and got hooked and didnt return it, i think it is a wonderful album and lemar's voice is awesome. yes its true that he reminds you of seal in a way but i believe that his style is totally differnet and in the end you really cant compare both of them. i think lemar still has a lot of "time to grow" and he can only get better. all he needs is to be discovered by the u.s audience and he's on a roll!

While waiting for a connecting flight at Heathrow, I was burning time in one of the fashion stores when I heard this wonderful song playing on their stereo. I quickly went up to the cashier to ask who was playing. She gave me a confused look for a second and said, "That's Lemar!" in a way that made it clear her confusion was how I could possibly not know who it was. London born Lemar Obika (to Nigerian parents) is a self-proclaimed soul man as he declares on the lead off track of his second album Time To Grow. Almost every song is a winner but I particularly like "Call Me Daddy" (the song I heard in Heathrow) about the pain of miscarriage; and the very funky "All I Ever Do/My Boo (Part II)" which sounds like nothing else. Lemar is already a star in the UK and based on Time To Grow and Dedicated (which I also picked up), it shouldn't be too long before the US audience discovers what all the fuss is about.

All silky smooth style but hardly any substance........2005-08-24

Oh for the days when soul singers were really soulful singers! Try as they might, the majority of today's soul or R&B singers can never quite match the same elusive qualities of transcendent dynamism of performance, or genuine, distinctive soul-deep emotional expression that such immortal soul greats as Otis Redding or Percy Sledge actually possessed. Nowadays, it's all style over substance. And Lemar Obika -- Britain's latest R&B sensation recently discovered through the television talent show, "Fame Academy" -- is, sad to say, no exception to this rule that frustratingly continues to persist and pervade throughout today's pop music industry like an inoperable cancer.

Lemar's husky voice may be somewhat reminiscent of fellow Briton Seal, but disappointingly, the former singer does not possess the dynamic vocal range of the latter. Lemar delivers every single track in the same smooth, technically perfect yet bland and totally nuance-lacking laidback style. Predictably, all the songs are given typically nice, middle-of-the-road contemporary R&B arrangements.

So while it's all very pleasant sounding and Lemar may make reference to Sam and Dave's classic hit and claim to be a "Soulman" in the lead track of the same name; it's all actually rather unremarkable and soulless music. Of course, the production is typically lush and polished for a major label product. And like all uninspired major label product, it gets really boring to listen to even after the first few spins.

Wonderful.......2007-04-22

I must confess I am unfamiliar with Copland's "The Tender Land" except for this reissue, which I find to be absolutely magnificent. I realize this is a truncated performance, eliminating what I assume to be a fair amount of spoken dialogue. But I don't care. What is presented here is simply one of the finest American compositions - forget American - one of the finest compositions of the 20th century. Period.

The recording of Copland's The Tender Land is alone worth getting this disc. The rest of the vocal works are just a bonus, a very good bonus! Copland directs a definitive account of his opera, and in this compressed version leaves out all the spoken parts of the full length opera, no doubt depriving us of a lot of good music but on the other hand giving listeners a very concise version that is even stronger musically (although dramatically a little lacking in logic because of the missing parts - for example without knowing of the confrontation during the party scene you would find the boys' departure the next morning puzzling, and the CD notes does not elaborate on the plot, which is about the only negative thing you can say about this set). Listening to the opera in this abridged version gives you the feeling of one hit after another, there is not a single weak point in the score and Copland has a gift for word-setting that can turn clumsy texts such as "girls come and go, some are good, some are not so good" into goosebumps stuff (a lovely dedication to Laurie sung by Grandpa). Other high points include the stunning transformation of the traditional Walls of Zion into the quartet piece The Promise Of Living and a rollicking Party Scene, which contains the best in Copland's clever orchestration and rythmic vitality - it seems all of the composers best traits have all come together in this work. Martin's Act 2 Song 'Laurie...You Know, Laurie' is a rare gem or an aria and beautifully sung. Other hidden gems include the comical 'We've Been North'. The cast is impeccable and the entire performance is flawless. Add to that one of those scores that simply win you over from start to finish, and you can't but fall in love with this music. I once thought that nothing could better Appalachian Spring but that was before I discovered this neglected work.

Copland's vocal work.......2002-08-08

And so on this third set of the celebration of Aaron Copland's music, all attention is on his vocal work including the opera, "The Tender Land".

I can't completely explain why I give this five stars after giving the first two sets four stars each. This is just the way the opera, in particular, strikes me. I'm no great opera fan, and to my knowledge, America just has not yet proved itself in the operatic field although it's tried. It will take time, but I do see Copland's work as someday being considered the best example of American opera. This is all subjective opinion, obviously, and I'm sure there are those more knowledgeable who will disagree. So be it.

Essential history.......2007-06-24

Hooray for Pavilion Records and all other organizations collecting early recordings and transferring them to CD for the world to enjoy! Of course since they are EARLY recordings (1917-1927) it has that fizzy wax sound to it and the lyrics get mushy at times. That either makes it endearing or annoying, depending on your perspective. It's lovely to finally hear the Brox Sisters sing again, let John Steel's tenor soar, and to hear what You'd Be Surprised sounded like sung by a girl. The earliest songs of Irving Berlin may not be his best, but are a refreshing glimpse into his 30s. Half of the songs on this disc debuted in Berlin's own Music Box Revue at the theater he built after WWI.

An interpreter's magic that is spell-binding........2001-04-13

Here is a welcome to a "Nostalgia" series by Naxos, and a welcome into the 21st Century to the great Irish tenor John McCormack. Younger shoppers may not be familiar with this remarkable singer who once rivalled Caruso in the recording popularity stakes. Blessed with the naturally beautiful voice and the secure breath control that any singer might envy, McCormack had the additional ability to communicate directly and memorably and vividly. He polished and perfected his inimitably Irish diction until he felt confident that every listener in the largest auditorium could hear and understand every word. Feeling he had no flair for foreign languages or for acting, he retired early from the operatic stage, but not before he had made recordings of several Mozart and Handel arias that have remained models ever since. Some of his recordings of lieder by Hugo Wolf, moreover, can still send shivers down the spine.

Album Description

Shaker music is a unique body of American sacred folk music, created by eighteen American Shaker communities over a period of one hundred and forty years (1780-1920). This rich tradition of song continues to serve the Shaker community in the twenty-first century because it embodies their history, records the testimony of Shakers "who have gone before," articulates the religious principles on which Shakerism is founded, and reflects the faith of the contemporary community. Shaker music was created and nurtured in communities that prized isolation from worldly ways. Shaker melodies, although related to the larger tradition of Anglo-American folk songs, are not bound by their form, tonality, melodic or rhythmic structure.

The Enfield Shaker singers are a vocal ensemble of adults and children devoted to the study and performance of Shaker music. The group is open to all without audition, and is made up of both trained musicians and amateur singers. We draw heavily on the repertoire received or composed in the two societies that were the New Hampshire Bishopric—Canterbury and Enfield. Since the New Hampshire societies enriched their repertoire with songs from all the other Shaker communities, they also sing songs of the New York, Maine, Massachusetts, Ohio and Kentucky Shakers.

The Enfield Shaker Singers are drawn to Shaker spirituals that illuminate Shaker communal values and broaden our definitions of the sacred. The songs included on this recording illustrate some of the many ways music served Shaker communities. Most Shaker song texts are theologically direct, emotionally honest, and expressive of our shared humanity.

On this recording we offer thirty-nine songs we have come to love. Some have special meaning for individuals. We associate others with a particular singer in the group, or an occasion when it was sung. Each song offers us slightly different insights into Shaker aspiration, and Shaker faith. Religious music from the 19th century.......2007-07-07

If one likes the songs of the Shakers written in the late 18th and early 19 century that were without musical instruments, then you may like this CD. I found 8 songs out of the 30 or more on the CD that I liked, the others I did not care for much. This is no fault of the creators of the Cd, it is simply the style of the Shakers of the past.

A wonderful listening treat.......2005-01-11

This CD is a delight! The simple melodies, surprising harmonies, and clarity of the voices makes you want to sing along. Listening makes one smile, regardless of one's religious persuasion. Thank you for giving us these songs and preserving the tradition of this music.
