A look into the young Serbian soul........2006-06-14

Don't be worried by the description "Dance" music. You won't find any window-shattering, body-shaking beats on this compilation. Instead, hear what the artists have to say for themselves in this well-thought blend of Electronica/Trance. The last sentence on the back of the album describes their music as a "100% adrenaline-free collection of tunes from the place where apathy meets devastation..." This selection offers an inviting look into the young musical soul of Serbia. The trance-like sounds were better than I thought, and offered a richer mix of emotions than I had come to expect from modern 'Balkan' music. I only gave this a 4 because I had hoped to hear a few traditional Serbian sounds. This is definitely modern, definitely Euro - but definitely not Euro-trash!

Art of Belgrade's House.......2001-10-30

The citizens of Belgrade underwent a major change since the peaceful revolution of October 2000. As an reaction to the awful Serbian turbo-folk music and influenced by the UK and German techno culture; house and drummnbass suddenly became the most popular music in the town of Belgrade. Everywhere in the street it was to be heard; every richer club was inviting stars from the UK. This culture was expanded to the rest of Serbia through the 'EXIT - music festival' in July 2001. It was 9 days of drummnbass and house as well as some rock.

A blissed out smoky beat treat.......2001-07-25

This album is definitely what you would call a 'grower'. On the first listen, only a handful of tracks stand out. But after several airings, the tunes begin to melt together into a quality chill out album.

Chill out has become hot in recent months, but 'Coffee Shop Volume 2' is vastly different to the highly commercial sound of this year's mainstream compilations.

'Find A Way' by King Kooba kicks off the proceedings in great style, combining a shuffling beat with haunting, dreamy vocals and melody. A perfect tune to dream away a rainy day to.

'Hazed Project' by Numb is a more upbeat, electronic affair, while 'Not Seventeen' by Mandalay is a smoky mix of beautiful Bjork-ish vocals and deep, languid bass. This short track will definitely have you reaching for the 'back' button on your CD player.

Other pearls include the rough-edged and urban 'Do You Believe' by London Electricity, and the drum 'n' bass driven 'Fresh' by Forces of Nature. Deep, rich bass simply oozes from 'Early Dawn' by Careless, with the gentle breakbeat ensuring your head never stops nodding.

The only real criticism of this album is the way it is paced. For example, after the delight of 'Not Seventeen' you are rudely snapped out of your relaxed state by the rather harsh and souless 'Bongo Tune' by Quarter. Variation is fine, but why not lead the listener into it gently rather than forcefully?
