KC and the Sunshine Band, led by Harry Wayne Casey, brought a bit of male bravado to the predominantly diva-led disco scene. 5 out of 5 stars Still Streaking After All These Years .......2006-12-21

This is the best album to play when you prepare for a night of streaking! When the disco ball is spinning in the bathroom, and I'm blow-drying my chest hair, buffing the silver tiger-tooth medallion, and primping the afro-rainbow wig, nobody gets me ready to streak like KC and the boys. For free-style streaking through public parks, zoos, and senior citizen centers, "Shake Your Booty" never fails to please the audience! (I have an ipod and micro-speakers stashed in my wig). And in competition, at the Rose Bowl's annual Streakers Championship, I always play "Boogie Man!" That's become my trademark and nickname, and helped me get to the top! (I won last year's Superstreak Cup... but I publicly admitted the judges should have given it to the Puerto Rican "El Buffo").

That's just more proof that old school streaking is still the best! I've stuck to the tried and true 70's style, while others have been more trendy: In the 80's, a lot of the guys stopped using KC as their streak music. Many competitors started to wax their chest hair and streak to songs like "Danger Zone" from Top Gun. (Some streaked while holding sparklers, while others ran with those orange "hey plane, this way" flashlights). By the late-eighties, one guy streaked to Motley Crue songs -- he ran with a javelin, and every 50 feet he'd plant it in the ground and do a quick pole dance before streaking some more!

Others have punctuated their streaks with break dancing, head banging with extended "Ozzy finger signs", and the 90's craze of slow, aimless, "mope" streaking.

But KC and the Sunshine Band have never went away! They "Keep It Coming Love"! And they "Get Down Tonight" and *every* night! They are the biggest inspiration and soundtrack in the history of streaking!!! So when a good streaker makes your day or even improves your life, you can thank KC and the Sunshine Band!!!!

The Miami-based KC and the Sunshine Band scored again and again in the '70s with their spirited, ultracatchy pop-disco. As this two-disc set makes clear, hits such as "Get Down Tonight," "(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty," and "Keep It Comin' Love" remain utterly delightful. 25th Anniversary Collection also places emphasis on lesser-known prestardom singles such as "Queen of Clubs" and "I'm a Pushover." Its only real flaw is in a certain too-completeness that leads to the inclusion of three versions of the ballad "Please Don't Go" and a couple of weak Motown covers (KC's own Detroit pastiche, "Who Do Ya Love," is much more successful). Still, it's hard to imagine a more definitive look at these party kings. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Great collection.......2006-07-06

Though I was not a big listener of music during the era of KC & the Sunshine Band, I have heard some of their songs in the last few years and enjoyed them. This collection contains those songs plus lots of other good songs. I keep it in my car and when I want a boost, put on a fun song. And my young grandkids love shaking their "booties" to the music!

4 out of 5 stars Disco's Day In Sunshine Recalled on KC 25th Anniversary Set.......2004-07-19

This 25th anniversary two-disc set of KC & The Sunshine Band's best is bookended by two versions of their signature song, "Get Down Tonight."

Disc one starts with the original 1975 single, one of disco's (and, by extension, the 1970s) most explosive, assertive musical moments. Bandleader/leadsinger Harry "KC" Casey jumps from a sparking guitar solo and pounding drums to ask the world if its ready for a brand newer beat. "Get Down Tonight!" is exhortation as well as invitation, completing in disco the mix of the gospel and blues Ray Charles spent his early career forging. Rock theatrics, JBs groove, Spectorian production and Miami salsa joined then to form disco's hedonistic music and message.

In the extended mix closing Disc 2, legendary DJ Tom Moulton dismantles, reassembles and stretches pieces of the original hit across its incessant bass/drum beat. You hear sparse piano jazz, guitars conversing in Morse code, horns leading a charge then pulling back in rhythm. Moulton rethinks a classic pop single, providing a composing lesson to dance to.

In between those versions Rhino tells KC & The Sunshine Band's story through its remarkable string of 1975-78 hits: propulsive grooves like "I'm Your Boogie Man," "Keep It Coming Love," and the "That's The Way (I Like It)" turn horn riffs and female chants into sexy, trashy, and gritty songs in disco's heydey. Even their lone ballad hit, "Please Don't Go" (the first #1 of the 80s) packs big band production punch and a near carnival riff repeated throughout the song.

In the margins you hear the Sunshine Band's showcase sharp Kool & The Gang-style disco-funk ("Shotgun Shuffle," and their version of George McCrae's hit, "Rock Your Baby.") You also hear should-have-been-hits like "Who Do You Love?" and 1978's surprisingly strong take on the Four Tops' "It's The Same Old Song." You also hear occasional missteps like 1982's "Let's Go Rock and Roll," and a flaccid, "Dancing In The Street" before KC rebounded with 1984's comeback, "Give It Up."

This group was entirely about its singles, so this collection is slightly less essential than either taut collections like 1990's best-of or KC's entry in Warner's "Essentials" series. But disco and general 70s music fans will find this 2 CD-set expands and celebrates an underrated group and phenomenon.

One of the good collection to be kept for this 'non-stop' dance remix which is different from the orginal way which plays songs from one after another in full. A recommendation to those whom are interested in this genre of music.

4 out of 5 stars Greatest hits with an update.......2007-01-05

I chose this instead of a greatest hits collection simply because I enjoy house remixes of old disco tracks and that's what this is. Great sound, but beware - it's not the original hit you knew. Yes, you'll recognize it, but if you're a purist, steer clear.

If you're not a purist and can appreciate the connection between disco and electronica, snag this little gem.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Remixes!!.......2006-02-28

Remix albums are often a disapointment. The best remixes will add drama, build up, or extend the best parts of the original. This CD manages to all of this very well.

Fans of KC will hear the intro to "Boogie Man" and right away will sense a better version is under way. The remixes are done in a way that preserves the body of the original while adding more beats and samples from the songs themselves. When "Boogie Shoes" gets going, you hear all the crispness of the horn section as it pioneers it's way into disco history. The bridge between "Man" and "That's The Way I Like It" keeps the party rolling. And the album rollicks along with a non-stop playlist of tunes from one the greatest disco party bands ever.

In fact, what's brilliant about this collection is the way 25 year old music can be brought to new ears while still sounding fresh and innovative. Another reason KC holds up is because of all the real guitars, drums and horns. This was a funk band with a penchant for the dance floor. And their work not only stands up, it stands out! Put this disc in and then let the party begin!

4 out of 5 stars Isn't it strange...........2005-09-26

that the 2 lowest(one star) reviews contradict each other. One thinks the cd is bad because the remixes ruin the originals, while the other thinks the remixes are bad because they sound too much like the originals! I personally like this remix cd cause I have their hits cd, but wouldn't mind having a 'new' take on these dance classics. Most of the songs sound EXACTLY like their original counterparts, just a little edited so the dj can produce some 'new' music to blend the songs together. Some songs aren't really affected except at the beginning and the end, while a few have a different beat or music to it DURING the actual song. Still, the essence of the originals are basically there and recognizable, which is why I really like this.

I must say, I HATE remixes that just ruin the original by making it completely unrecognizable or undanceable. That's why I prefer extended mixes, but this remix cd(it's silly to call this a dance remix since these were already great dance songs to begin with) stays faithful to the originals. My major problem with the cd is that the songs don't always segway into each other smoothly. For a continuoue mix cd, the songs don't flow into each very well in some instances(some of the songs awkwardly transition into the next which disrupts the catchy dance grooves). Also, I have a minor problem with the great mix for "Please Don't Go" which, at 3 minutes, is just waaaaay too short. Those are my two personal drawbacks in an otherwise good release. If you're a die-hard fan, this cd isn't really essential(though still recommended). But for casual fans who want slight remixes that retain the sound of the originals, highly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars I would give this NO stars if I could (better mixes out ther.......2005-03-26

This is absolutely NOT a good club/dance remixes project. If that's what you're looking for, go find the yellow/orange one (called Sunshine or something) on ZYX Records. This piece of crap (can I say crap on these things?) :) sounds like slight, period variations on the original songs. Ugg! If you like disco, you might like this.

1 out of 5 stars It made me weep!.......2005-02-16

I'm old enough to have heard KC on the radio when he was still posting in the Top 40 and young enough to have never set foot in a disco (for better or worse).

I have fond memories of the times and the songs and was fully unaware that this CD did NOT contain the original tracks from that by gone era!

Instead the listener is presented with completely remastered material and it shows- horrifically.

The voice is twenty years older and the instrumentals, especially the hot pick guitar segments, are lack luster at best.

If you're looking for the good times with KC and the Sunshine band, look to "The Best of ..." release by Rhino (1990) or the "25th Anniversary Edition".

Both of those collections offer the original material that made you look for it here.

1 out of 5 stars Not what you're expecting.......2002-11-20

The songs are slightly different versions of the radio hits - but not "live" either. Plus 'My Boogie Shoes' isn't included. I was dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars Party Jams.......2006-10-01

KC was the truth back in the day. fake "Pinocchio turkeys" like Justin Timberlake, Robin Thicke,Jamariquai,Maron 5,etc... can't bring it like Harry Wayne Casey. dude could Groove on the Keyboard(BamBoard)&could sing. he just had feel good cuts&had a band that was on point. KC&the Sunshine Band was to my ears, like multi colored Packages of Kool-Aid is to my eyes. "that's the way I like it" is still a Banging jam, as is "Get down tonight", Give it up,I'm your boogie Man are all tight. yeah you can call it simplicity, but they are Banging cuts period. Disco was always cool&it never went away, just got another name&it's been known by the Politcally Correct term Dance Music, but it never went away. these songs still are Bumping all of these years later.

5 out of 5 stars Sure It's Disco, But..........2001-04-24

OK, so this is a disco album. OK, it's a collection of hits by a band who many of us would like to pretend never existed (well, from an era many of us would like to pretend...). All I ask is that you take these thoughts on board before deciding whether or not to buy this.

KC and The Sunshine Band were one of the first fully-integrated bands in the history of music - this might not say much about their music but it says something. The other thing which you need to remember is that Disco music is never meant to be the sort of music where after a track finishes you go "wow, they really said some clever stuff there!" - the desired effect is more on the "let's play that track again, I wanna dance!" and taken on this premise, this album is successful.

Most decidedly the most well known tracks on this album ("Shake Your Booty", "Get Down Tonight", "That's The Way" etc.) are lightweight lyrically and - to a greater or lesser extent - musically as well. However, they do provide exactly what you need at a party (my copy of this CD has had many workouts at parties already) - a good beat with clear funk in it to dance to and nothing too surprising in any department.

The rest of this album works largely in the same way. While I was not around to see the 70s - having been born, for better or worse, about 5 years too late - I am reliably assured that those who have will instantly recognise many of the other songs here, usually with good memories. One song may be almost interchangable with another but that is the entire point: dance up a frenzy, who cares about the lyrics?

There are some interesting points with the music on this album - the sped up guitar on "Get Down Tonight" for example - which display much more studio wizardry than I thought existed at the time.

In the end, the only reason to buy this album can be summed up in the words of KC himself: "Do a little dance/make a little love/get down tonight". Shake your booty - you know you want to.

5 out of 5 stars Who Do Ya Love? What a question! KC of course!!!.......2006-05-14

First, KC never made "disco". Dance music, that's what this is. But even for a non-dancer like me this feels GREAT! I've never heard horn sections like the one KC used, or think of Richard Finch's bass, KC's keys: terrific. You either want to be there drumming with the band or move your ..... feet. You got no other choice. This music makes you feel happy all over.
I don't like Best Of's so I was So Happy when this one came out. An underrated album at the time. Sure, KC repeats the chorus until you humm it in your sleep, but still he always makes me feel happy. My favorite track: Sho Nuff' - a bit different from the usual KC up-tempo songs. But hey, what do you say to the "Boom" at the start? and then those horns? OOOOoooh they hit you right on the spot. Come To My Island is soooo nice, the laid back guitar, dreaming of the sunshine, a nice girl by your side, what more can you want? But what am I telling you here, words can't express the feeling triggering your butt - or like with me, the non-dancer, the smiles. KC will forever make you happy. And while you're at it, also check out "Do It Good", "KC and the Sunshine Band", "Part 3", Jimmy "Bo" Horne, George McCrae.

5 out of 5 stars A Tropical Holiday with KC.......2006-04-27

KC and the Sunshine Band has been unfairly stereotyped as a "disco" band, but their music was actually a fusion of American R&B with Caribbean music. The guitarist was of Bahamian descent, the percussionist was born in Cuba, and the rest of the band grew up in Miami, where they heard island rhythms all the time.

Don't let the drab, spacey cover fool you: "Who Do Ya Love" is the Sunshine Band's most tropically-influenced and least dance-oriented album, and one of my favorites. The styles represented here include calypso ("Come To My Island" and "I Will Love You Tomorrow"), Motown (a cover of the Four Tops' "It's the Same Old Song") and, believe it or not, reggae ("How About a Little Love."). The opener, "Do You Feel Allright," is propelled by the congas, an awesome circular rhythm guitar riff, and some multi-tracked syllabic singing at the end. And "So Glad" features a rare electric piano solo by KC!

I am thrilled to see this unjustly forgotten album from 1978 on CD. If you can't make it to the islands this year, put on this CD and pretend you're there.
