5 out of 5 stars Elly Ameling now more available .......2007-03-07

I had a 33 rpm album of Elly Ameling singing Schubert lieder accompanied by piano and clarinet at times. It was one of my all time favorite albums so I have been disappointed that I have not been able to find it anywhere on CD.

Now I can just buy this excellent collection. So much music in one place! Since I confess that I am far from an expert on the rest of her records, I look forward to hearing her sing many other styles and composers.

I think it is silly to criticize her for not singing Wagner, for example, since her version of many songs, especially lieder, are nothing short of sublime. I would like to hear how many Wagnerians sing Schubert or Mozart.

I doubt if they could approach the skill and soul with which Elly Ameling sings lieder.

5 out of 5 stars Delight in every note.......2006-03-10

To speak as briefly as possible about this superb collection from an equally superb singer, what can I say but that Ms Ameling possessed a voice that shone with radiant warmth and star-like shimmer? And unlike many another light lyric soprano, Elly Ameling was possessed of a very high standard of musicianship, considerable intelligence, and a sort of immediate charm that captivates the listener.

So many of her recordings have still to be released on CD, but this 5CD-set goes some way towards remedying the situation. The repertoire spans a wide variety - French mèlodies, Lieder, light-hearted "sentimental" songs, Bach, etc. - and in each piece, Ms Ameling shows that quality of pearl-like beauty. It is a beauty which is also extremely pretty - a beauty of voice that is never overbearing and over-ripe, but perfectly blossoming upon the tree of inspiration.

I recommend this set unequivocally. It truly is sheer delight.

5 out of 5 stars While they last..........2005-05-17

Elly Ameling held the quiet stage for recitals of great artistry and dignity for several decades and sadly most of the enormously successful CDs of her long career output are now unavailable. For those who have little access to the documentation of this very special artist, this box set is a must. It is a compilation of many of her recordings with differing accompanists, conductors, orchestras and composers. And while not all of the choices for inclusion here would be considered her greatest moments, there are enough works that sustain the warm memories of the little Dutch hausfrau who quietly and simply paid homage to composers with her clear and intelligent musicianship and radiant voice.

Ameling was known to schedule recitals of Schubert cycles and songs and in the afterglow of her performance answer the demand for curtain calls with additional Schubert melodies: she gifted her audience with the dignity of honoring a composer's works by maintaining the focus on that composer rather than milk the audience with the usual encore applause-getting favorites. And special moments such as quietly and pensively strolling through the orchestra during the Mahler 4th symphony to arrive at front stage, unapplauded, just in time for the opening line of her singing - those simple homage to composers and collaborators made her selfless manner endearing to audiences.

Despite the fact that Ameling's voice was on the small side she was always able to muster the projection to carry her message solidly in context with an orchestra. Yes, other more famous singers have recorded Ravel's quintessentially French SHEHERAZADE, but few have the perfection of diction and aura of mystery that Ameling maintained. Whether singing with piano or orchestra, or interpreting Bach, Mozart, Handel, and Vivaldi with the same degree of involvement as Brahms and Schumann and Schubert, Elly Ameling spanned a career that engendered passionate commitment from her fans. And this boxed set is a pocket full of memories to be treasured. Buy it before this too becomes unavailable. Grady Harp, May 05

5 out of 5 stars Treasures From a Treasure.......2004-09-25

Treasures from a Treasure.

Ameling, one of the world's most beloved recitalists is captured here in a 5 CD collection offering some of her most beautiful recordings of song. While we are used to her perfection in songs of Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Schumann, Faure and Hahn, an added joy is her "pop" side, tackling - without a whiff of pretension, Porter, Kern, Gershwin, Ellington, et al.

What an absolute joy it is listening to this amazing artist sing these songs with an almost uncanny natural ease. There is no resorting to a "pop" voice and yet most of these pop standards songs sound as though they could have been written for her. Clean attacks, sometimes a bit of the pop technique of hanging on to a consonant longer than a classical artist normally would shows an appreciation and understanding of the style. Still, there is never once a compromise of her vocal beauty.

I like the way the songs have been arranged for her voice in that she sort of sings them clean, unaffected in the first half and then lets loose and kinda "swings" with it adding embellishments but never really changing her voice (Price, von Stade and other favorite singers of mine seem to have always added a breathy quality to much of their crossover material.)

Ameling doesn't resort to trying to "let her hair down" or get down and dirty, but rather the honest with which she approaches every one of these songs shows how much she enjoys singing them and her style is as refreshing as stumbling onto a cool spring on a sweltering summer's afternoon. A wonderful surprise.

5 out of 5 stars More than fully earned praise for an exceptional singer........2003-07-15

As I had the privilige of hearing this outstanding Lied-singer during her long career in Holland and being the proud possessor of almost all her recordings, I cannot but fully agree with the professional and joyful review of Mr. Robert Holliston from Victoria, B.C. Canada.
Yes, it is unbelievable that of about the 150 recordings Mrs. Ameling made during her long career (for the greater part of course on the 'oldfashioned' LP's, as well as the innumerable Dutch live-recorded radio-concerts), so few CD's have been released.
Speaking of tradition: it was the page-turner of the Wigmore Hall in London who told Mrs. Ameling after her first recital in this hall, that she reminded him of Elisabeth Schumann. (And he certainly didn't mean her looks only!)
For those who are eager to hear her singing Ravel's Shéhérazade (just one example of stirring imagination combined with her Art of Singing) I can tell you that Philips released a 2-box CD of this work in 1999, combined with Debussy's La Damoiselle élue and a compilation of French mélodies, i.e. Debussy, Fauré, Duparc, Satie. One of the gems is Caplet's Le Corbeau et le Renard which even make children, who know the fables of La Fontaine, revel in the singing of the quarrelsome birds....
Her brilliant accompanyist is Rudolf Jansen. Let us cherish great artists in their art!

4 out of 5 stars Great band.......2004-11-02

The band is slammin, however all the songs are mislabeled. What is song 5 is really song one, etc... Is it just my cd???? Other than trying to figure out what song is which, it's a great album.

4 out of 5 stars Funky Kupka Side Project.......2004-09-27

With all of the Tower of Power fans out there I'm surprised I'm writing the first review. If you are a TOP complete-ist you will definitely want to get this CD. Songs, 1,3,5,6,7,9 and 11 are funky enought to satisfy the most ardent of TOP fans. The lead singers include, Glenn Walters, Huey Lewis (of the News), Bill Champlin (of the Sons of Champlin and Chicago) and others. Bill Champlin's talents are wasted in Chicago. His chops are so funky on "Color Me Gone" I had to refer to the liner notes to verify it was him singing. Huey Lewis is a natural in the heavy R&B funk setting that the TOP horns lay down (don't forget, the TOP horn appeared on early Huey Lewis and the News albums). As for the musicians, Mic Gillette, Rocco Prestia, Lenny Pickett, David Garibaldi and Jeff Tamlier, all longtime TOP members, are core members of the Strokeland Superband. This would have earned five stars but the slow songs are predictable with nothing happening musically. Overall a strong effort. I hope Kupka and the boys plan on more.

4 out of 5 stars Stereolab fans, take note.......2007-01-10

Another spin-off from Stereolab, with less in common with its source than Laeticia's side-project Monade (Which is also worth a listen, particularly "A Few Steps More"). This one is from their bassist, Simon Johns, and draws a bit from Stereolab's hypnotic riffing style, but new vocalist Mary Hampton has a cleaner, lighter soprano voice...and I'd say this stands on its own merits. Fans of Adventures in Stereo might find it familiar territory, though the song structures are generally more complex and elaborated upon. Recommended. "Trinity Neon", their initial effort, isn't as strong, a band finding its footing; Half of its tracks are instrumentals, and as with Monade, not up to its sophomore effort. Those who love "Blow It Up" and Stereolab completists may want to check it out.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2006-03-29

James Hunter is absolutely brilliant. I've had this CD since it was first released, and years later, I still haven't tired of it.
The man's voice is phenomenal. I could swear he was black, rather than English. A definite set of pipes. I'm almost convinced that a) he's either possessed by the ghost of Sam Cooke, or b) Sam Cooke is alive and well and James is just doing the whole Milli Vanilli thing. His backing band is fantastic, as well. They really have the vintage R&B thing down to a perfection. The cover of Clyde McPhatter's "Lover's Question" is so amazing. I love Mr. McPhatter's music to death... but I think James definitely one-upped him!
The only track I don't care for is "Turn On Your Love Light" with Van Morrisson... only because I don't like Van Morrison. James definitely outshines him on that track!
So yes, I highly suggest buying this album... along with the others.

5 out of 5 stars Under the Radar.......2004-11-06

James Hunter is an r&b revivalist. His style is not new; however, he certainly nails the genre, managing to sound two parts Sam Cooke and one part Georgie Fame. "Don't tell me now, I know I'm on trial, so kick it around for awhile," he sings on the bubbly title track with Nick Lunt's baritone sax smoking. "Because You're Mine" rocks with a great boogie woogie tenor sax of Damian Hand bopping joyfully. "Believe Me Baby," slams out of the speakers with Hunter's expressive vocals, "I love you, baby, & I always will, but your big mouth's about to get me killed." The instrumental "Night Bus" has equal parts sleazy Neil Hefti and Dick Dale beach boogie in a great sonic explosion. "Tell Her for Me" closes the CD with Hunter sounding about as soulful as Sam Cooke, "I asked the moon if you catch her eye, tell her for me as you pass by." His cover of Clyde McPhatter's "A Lover's Question" is an excellently rendered homage. This is one of those CDs that you might have to seek out under the radar, but is well worth the journey. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars This Guy Can Really Sing!!!.......2003-02-25

We'll I actually just received my CD of James Hunter the other day and have been enjoying every one of the songs. I actually had to do a little bit of searching trying to track down Mr. Hunter's CD after hearing the song, "It's So Easy to Say" on the local blues station. If you are into the sounds of the 50's and early 60's types of Rythym and Blues you'll love these songs. They have the groove and sound of modern-day interpretations while at the same time clearly show their early R&B influences. I will definietly buy Mr. Hunter's other CD's and hope some day he'll make it to the US so that I can see him live or maybe I'll have to save up and go to the UK?

Did I say that the guy truely has a great voice and can sing!

5 out of 5 stars Kick It Around - James Hunter.......2001-07-17

Hi All! I am guessing that by now you know that it takes a very, very special CD to rate being reviewed by me. Average maybe, one in every 20 is reviewed. Well here is one that literally knocked my socks off when I played it. James Hunter a young German National has captured the essence of the 50's & early 60's Rock and Rhythm & Blues. One sensational track followed by another. Listening to James and I find no problem at all picturing him with the likes of Little Isidore & Little Leopold. The sound is THERE!! Doing a couple of oldies and a load of originally written tunes. All vocals are by James Hunter. Along with his vocal abilities, he plays one Great guitar. This will be evidenced on the one instrumental offering on the CD. I know you will feel the same as I do when you sit and listen to James Hunter. Did I say SIT?? Well you won't be sitting still!!

2 out of 5 stars Entire production by Mary (boring) Martin!.......2004-01-25

This CD reissues two ancient 10" Lps from the early 1950s of selections from ANYTHING GOES and THE BANDWAGON.

ANYTHING GOES - with so many other better recordings this collection is little needed. Mary Martin was a poor choice for the album since the show was written for Ethel Merman, and just a Ethel would not have been appropriate in SOUND OF MUSIC or PETER PAN, Mary should not have been cast in this recorded version of ANYTHING GOES. Also with no one else in the cast the duets lack theatrical context. The orchestrations are not the originals from 1934, and now sound very dated.

THE BANDWAGON - This collection seems better suited to Mary Martin, although again the original theatrical context is lost since it's just her and the chorus performing. Those familiar with the 1953 movie THE BANDWAGON may be surprised that only 3 songs from the revue were used in the film, so this disc offers a chance to hear the opening chorus:"It Better Be Good"; the delightful "Hoops"; and "Where Can He Be?" This last number is perfectly suited to Ms. Martin's voice and talents. She also makes the most of "Dancing in the Dark" and the slightly risque "Confession." But, a little Mary goes a long way!!!

It's a testament to Hollywood's desire--nay, need--to complicate things that Cole Porter's 1934 show Anything Goes made it to the screen twice (20 years apart), both times with Bing Crosby as the male lead. For this 1956 version, the plot was rewritten, three Sammy Cahn/Johnny van Heusen tunes were added, and "It's De-Lovely" was brought in from another Porter show (1936's Red, Hot and Blue!). As a bonus, this CD adds three non-Porter songs written for Crosby in the 1936 film version. Confused yet? In any case, this soundtrack may leave Porter fans frustrated but will delight those who enjoy the finger-snapping arrangements customarily found in 1950s Hollywood musicals. The inventivity of the brass section on the title track, for instance, actually eclipses Mitzi Gaynor's perky vocals. As for "I Get a Kick Out of You," between Jeanmaire's French-accented reading and the insane brass section going into overdrive, it's a camp delight. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

      4 out of 5 stars Anything Goes (1956) Film Sound-track available again!.......2005-04-23

This album was originally issued in the UK on the Brunswick Label, back in 1956. It was deleted in the early 1960s. It is marvellous to be able to obtain it again some 40 years later!

The quality is very good and it is an excellent bonus to have three tracks from the 1936 movie, included - especially the excellent Sailor Beware. The quality here is also remarkably good.

It should be noted that not all of the tracks are recorded directly from the soundtrack of the 1956 movie. In particular You're the Top appears to be a studio recording with Bing and Mitzi Gaynor. I seem to recall in the movie the song was sung concurrently by Bing/Mitzi Gaynor and Donald O'Connor/Jeanmaire in two different rehersal locations whilst on board ship. None the less the performance and quality is excellent - A most enjoyable CD especially for Crosby/O'Connor/Gaynor fans and good value at the price.

Wouldn't it be marvellous if this movie could be released on DVD, together with "The Birds and The Bees" - another of Mitzy Gaynor's rarely seen Paramount Technicolor comedy musicals? By the way the same sets are used in both films. Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Bing Crosby, Mitzi Gaynor and Zizi Jeanmaire sing superbly.......2004-02-10

This reissue of the 1956 ANYTHING GOES soundtrack from Decca Broadway is a real find. Although quite inferior to basically every other cast album of AG, it still features some great vocal performances from Bing Crosby, Mitzi Gaynor and the stunning Zizi Jeanmaire.

Highlights include Mitzi Gaynor's peppy, energetic rendition of the Title Song; Zizi Jeanmaire's all-out performance of "I Get a Kick Out of You" and Bing Crosby's beguiling croon of "All Through the Night".

Though the curious quartet version of "Blow Gabriel Blow" is strange indeed (the number works better as a solo), and the just plain-embarrassing "Ya Gotta Give the People Hoke" and "A Second-Hand Turban and a Crystal Ball" are two more missteps.

Added as bonus tracks are 3 numbers from the 1936 film version of ANYTHING GOES with Bing Crosby (though these particular numbers were not written by Cole Porter, thank God).

Worth buying if only for the wonderful Zizi Jeanmaire. [DECCA BROADWAY B0001933-02]

1 out of 5 stars For Bing Crosby fans only........2004-01-28

Decca's album of songs from the 1956 Paramount film ANYTHING GOES has always been a hashed up affair, and the decision to release it on CD is curious, to say the least.

The film was not well recieved when it was released and for many years it was a staple of afternoon TV movie shows.

Using the title and five songs from Cole Porter's Broadway hit, plus Porter's "It's DeLovely," Three new songs were needed, and instead of asking Porter, Paramount used Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn who contributed "Ya Gotta Give the People Hoke" "You can Bounce Right Back";and "A Second Hand Turban and a Crystal Ball." Never heard of these songs? With good reason...they are all terrible!

This is not even a true "soundtrack" album. Several songs were re-recorded in the studio. So instead of hearing "You're the Top" as performed in the film by all 4 stars, we get a cute studio arrangement for Bing Crosby and Mitzi Gaynor.

There are so many fine recordings of the stage production of ANYTHING GOES that this album is of little use unless you happen to be a Bing Crosby fan.

        Album Description

Clay Tyson is a Toronto based singer, guitarist and songwriter who happens to be the son of the legendary folk duo Ian & Sylvia. While he has been influenced by the musical world of his parents, Clay's music is all his own: earthy, rootsy music that draws on country, rock, and folk influences.

Raised in a highly creative environment, Clay studied piano at the Royal Conservatory of Music and later attended the Humber College Music Program. He also spent seven years as a writer, orchestrator, bassist, and pivotal member of Look People, with whom he toured extensively throughout Canada, America, and Europe. In the last few years, Clay decided to move his focus away from his bass playing in order to concentrate on his own writing and acoustic guitar playing.

As a solo musician, Clay has it all. He is a soulful, expressive singer with a subtle sense of phrasing and a deep rich tone. His guitar style can range from fast, sharp and clean to languid and pretty; from a warm gospel feel to folk finger-picking to a thumb-busting unplugged-Hendrix groove. And he is a songwriter of considerable talent who writes about day-to-day romantic struggles; keeping your faith and your head above water; and more. His new album "Kick It Down" offers 12 finely crafted songs, brilliantly produced by veteran ace Danny Greenspoon (Great Big Sea, Spirit of the West, Victoria Williams), and featuring stellar performances by the Breit Brothers (Kevin on guitar, Gary on keyboards) -- not to mention Clay himself. Kick It Down runs the gamut from contemporary, radio-friendly pop ("I Wait," "The Heart Is") to soulful excursions ("Good Intentions," "Kick It Down") to rootsy ballads ("A Stitch in Time," "I Find You") to sheer amusement ("The Bug," "Ditch Digger"), all delivered in Clay's unique style.
