splendid, except for final track.......2007-05-05
Young Sergei does a wonderful job with these transcriptions. The playing is masterful, nuanced and vibrant. The only fly in the ointment is the Gershwin. The orchestra just doesn't get Gershwin. Legatos in place of staccatos and too even triplets-the unAmericanness of the piece is jarring. Do we play Shosti as badly? Perhaps it is impossible to capture the music unless you have a feel for the culture from which it sprang. Anyway, the CD is a treasure as long as you stick to the other work.
Sergei Nakariakov-No Limit.......2007-01-04
I can strongly recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys
the trumpet and flugelhorn, this is an incredible performance
by this young musician. Most of the music will be recognised
as cello pieces, but if anything they sound better on the
instruments used.even if you are not a fan of trumpet/flugelhorn
please listen to this amazing CD.
best classical trumpet CD ever.......2005-05-16
I am professional Jazz trumpet player, and this is the most amazing trumpet playing I have ever heard. If anyone has any aspirations as a trumpet player,(whether classical or jazz), you need to own this CD. Sergei Nakariakov's flugelhorn playing has one of the most beautiful and musical sounds I have ever heard,
"No Limit" - Sergei Nakariakov.......2004-08-09
What an appropriate title! This really is young Russian trumpet virtuoso Sergei Nakriakov at his best, and this is probably his best album. The intro and rondo capriccioso is my favorite piece of music from Sergei's repertoire, and is played with incredible speed, ednurance, and extremely vibrant tone quality. This is more impressive than the original piece, which was written for cello. The andante cantabile is also a beautiful piece, played with passion and wonderful warmth and expression. The theme and variations by Tchaikovsky that make up the majority of the album are very impressive as you can hear how Nakariakov's low register proves that it is possible to sound like a trombone for long periods of time on a flugelhorn. The other really nice piece on this album is "Rhpsody in Blue", a classic by Gershwin orginially written for jazz piano, but here for trumpet with an orchestra. This piece is the only jazz piece Nakariakov plays, and as I am a huge jazz fan, I would like to see what else he could do with standard jazz themes. Besides, "Rhapsody in Blue" is more of a combination of jazz and contemporary classical music. Anyway, this is definitely one of the best albums of Nakariakov's, and if I had to pick one album of his, this would be it. I recommend this album to anyone interested in classical or jazz, and a must for all trumpet players. Trust me, it's well worth your money!
How Spectacular!!!.......2003-06-27
The reason why I decided to purchase this CD is because I liked Saint-Saens'Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso so much, and I wondered what kind of effect a trumpeter could offer when playing the same piece that was originally designed for violin. When I hurriedly put the CD in my CD walkman and at the moment when the trumpet's sound flowed into my ears, I was startled by the tone that a trumpet could offer! THis new version has offered a whole new different interpretation to this piece of work. I was and am still surprised by the fact that a sophisticated violin music can be played as good as, and even better, on a trumpet. Nakariakov's technique is undoubtedly superb, which makes me feel symphathetic to the the fact that he is not well-known. I highly recommend this CD not only because of the first track but also for the spectacularity of all other tracks.

Snoop's second album for the No Limit label finds him in fine form--maybe the finest since Doggystyle. On Top Dogg, Snoop has taken control of his own album; in working with a number of producers (Dr. Dre, Ant Banks, Raphael Saadiq, DJ Quick, and the Beats by the Pound team), he takes the best each has to offer and forces them to play to his own strengths. Though there are a few gangsta tracks on Top Dogg ("My Heat Goes Boom," with its "boom boom boom" chorus, is one of the album's best), the strongest songs here are the ones on which Snoop gets creative. There are a pair of tributes to Slick Rick--"Snoopafella," a Cinderella story on which Snoop aces Rickey's flow, and "G Bedtime Stories," which opens with a little kid asking "Uncle Snoop Dogg" to read him a bedtime story--and a few tracks built around classic samples (of George Clinton's "Black Hole Theme," Earth, Wind & Fire's "Shining Star," and even Brick's "Dazz"). There may not be anything here as transcendent as "Gin and Juice," but that's a minor complaint; Top Dogg is Snoop's best album in years. --Randy Silver
Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Effort By Snoop Dogg, His Best Work Besides 'Doggystyle'.......2007-06-10
Snoop Dogg's catalog is not the most consistent (he has good, decent, and awful albums), but we can all agree that 'Doggystyle' is a good release. 'No Limit Top Dogg' is probably his best work besides that classic album, and despite being on No Limit, this doesn't contain the cheesy production of 'Da Game Is To Be Sold...'.
The raw, dark production on some tracks like 'Buck 'Em', '. In Love With A Thug', and the excellent single 'Down 4 My N's' (which brings back good memories of better times for me) are just what the doctor ordered, and the funky 'Snoopfella' is a top-notch return to form for Snoop. Most of the album is good, especially the laid back classic 'Gangsta Ride' and the creative 'Ghetto Symphony'. Even No Limit's goons do a great job as special guests here, and Dr. Dre provides production for tracks like 'B*tch Please' which features well-known guests Xzibit and Nate Dogg. Is this Snoop's best work? Possibly. His rhymes are great here, the beats are inspired, and even the guests are great (even though certain ones drag the album down a bit). Even if you lost faith in Snoop and someone skipped over this one, check it out. It's still worth bangin' today.
Solid 4th Album From Tha Doggfatha (4.25 stars).......2007-05-06
As a proud owner of all Snoop's solos, 2 Eastsidaz albums and the 213 album from 2004, I can easily say this one is one of his better albums. The production on this album rocks with some dope latter day (1999) G-Funk from a bevy of dope producers. "Snoopafella" gets his story tellin' on over a sick Ant Banks (he rarely if ever dissapoints!) sampling "Dazz." "Gangsta Ride" feat Silkk The Shocker is a hot rider anthem over a bouncy Meech Wells westcoastin beat. DJ Quik heats up the boards with his melodic funk on "Buss'n Rocks" and the silky "Don't Tell" (f/ Mausberg, Nate Dogg, and Warren G). "My Heat Goes Boom" is a nice Gangsta track with Snoop kickin some real game. Snoop seems at ease and comfortable and his rhymes reflect that. A couple tracks are weak, such as the boring "Ghetto Symphony" with the No Limit homies and the overly slow "Somethin' Bout Yo Bidness," but Snoop makes up for them with tracks like the Dr. Dre banger "Just Dippin'" a nice way to bring the 2 back together over a nice laidback rider beat and the fast paced "20 Minutes" with Goldie Loc; both kick in some fast paced gangsta rhymes over a bouncy beat that could only come outta Long Beach; it was produced by Goldie Loc too. "I Love My Momma" is really self-explanatory with a nice older sounding G-Funk beat from Meech Wells. Overall, a good album by S.N. dubble O. P.
Best since Doggystyle.......2006-01-05
In my opinion this is Snoop's second best album even today, behind you guessed it, Doggystyle. That said it isn't even close to being as good as Doggystyle, but it is still a good album and after Da Game... and the slightly dissapointing Doggfather this can be viewed as a comeback almost.
Da Game.... featured No Limit production and loads of appearances by No Limit rappers, and as a result was wack, both have been cut back here. Snoop must have put his foot down and asked to bring in his own producers for No Limit Top Dogg, including of course Dre, for the first time since Doggystyle. There are also less No Limit rappers (any is too many though) featured, but surprisingly few appearances by his old West Coast homies. Anyway best track is easily B*tch Please, which is a classic in any era, Snoop's verses are tight but Xzibit is really the star of this track, as he makes what was really his mainstream breakthrough. My other top tracks are Buck Em, Just Dippin (both Dre produced unsuprisingly), Betta Days, Down 4 my Nig*az and Trust Me. Snoop also displays his impressive storytelling abilities on Snoopafella, where he basically re-tells Cinderella from his perspective. Most of the other tracks are at least good, and the production for the most part is tight, though the album is not without filler (Gangsta Ride, In Love With A Thug).
Overall this is an impressive album from Snoop, yes it is not Doggystyle, I don't think there ever will be another one. People have the tendency to mark Snoop albums against Doggystyle, rather than on their own merit unfortunately though. I'd give it 4 stars, recommended.
Brought the West Coast back!.......2005-09-30
B Please!
That's all I have to type to let you know how great and important this album in hip-hop was. I've since blasted Snoop for his waste of talent (and he is INCREDIBLY talented...let's not forget that!), but this CD is him and Master P actually working together to release a product that they were, no doubt, pleased with. It's good, but not the greatest thing since "Me Against the World." If you're looking for a solid Snoop album (pre his "Britney Spears years") this is one you need to add your repetoire!
not that good.......2005-08-02

From Magnolia To Soulja Slim Was A Power Move.......2005-08-14
Magnolia New Orleans veteran Soulja Slim last album recorded for No Limit and perhaps the last good release from the tank. The Streets Made Me is the second LP for Slim and almost came with a perfect release. He speaks a lot of truth and life experiences as "Get Cha Mind Right" starts the album off with clearing some misconceptions. Also, "Soulja For Life", is reality based as he speaks of police brutality, stereotypes and Black Americans. "Make It Bounce" and "Straight To The Dance Floor" is Nawlins club bouncing type tracks to get you moving. He takes shots at ex-label Cash Money about his struggles on "I'm A Fool". "...Y'all ain't talking about nothing..." quiet competition and have you bucked by "Talk Now" featuring Mia X. "Ya Heard Me" displays his skills over a looped sample as he shift gears with uncut lyrics without a hook or chorus. The two tones "What You Came Fo" sets this album off with even more gangster, game oriented lyrics. The Streets Made Me and the same thing killed the 3rd Ward Magnolia's Soulja Slim R.I.P.
- Soulja Slim The Great -.......2005-05-30
I love this album! I would recommend this CD to every gangsta, hustler, or real street nigga in every ghetto around the world! This was the #1 realist album that Slim ever made! Every line he spits makes you wanna just sit down & listen to it more and more! His verses are untouchable! Besides, B.G. cause to me, him & B.G. are just alike, nobody else from New Orleans can be compared to him lyrically! Even though Slim is dead and gone, his music will always live on through his real true fans such as myself.

amazing.......2007-05-23
I found these guys buy accident. I was rural Virginia and met the banjo player - tending the fiddle shop in downtown Galax. This is the REAL DEAL. I'm a bluegrass musician and this is the finest stuff I've stumbled along in a long time. Buy this album - it will be a collector's item one day, probably. Unbelievable talent from such young people. If I only had such talent!
Please.... put out another album.......2007-03-14
Dang but these people are *good*!! Surprisingly good. Turn it up and set the disk player on 'repeat' kind of good. I hope they keep recording and putting out albums. Strong technical skills, both instrumental and vocal (dang but that girl's good!). Tunes with substance - meaningful and interesting lyrics, well rounded melodically and harmonically (dang but they write some good tunes!). A nice mix of styles - slow and soulfull / fast and furious / some happy / some sad (dang but those folks can play!).
AKUS will be sharing the stage soon........2006-11-04
A few weeks ago I watched Songs of the Mountains on PBS. One group, No Speed Limit, really stood out from everyone else, especially their lead singer, 17 yr old Amber Collins. So, I went to Amazon and bought their CD. It is everything I wanted in a bluegrass CD. In my opinion this is the first bluegrass group that seems to have the makeup and potential of AKUS in that the group has a top line singer as well as top line pickers. Amber has a voice that is both powerful and very enjoyable to the ear. "She's been singing since she was two years old and toured with the Country Gospel Music Association where she was the Teenage, Young Performer, and A capella Artist of the Year from 1998 - 2002" (per her bio info in the CD notes). All of the pickers are outstanding and their Banjo player, Steve Barr, writes many of their songs. So, my recommendation is to buy this enjoyable CD then watch this fledgling group on it's way to becoming one of the top bluegrass groups in the country.
Just saw this group live in Maine--awesome Mountain Bluegrass.......2006-08-27
The band is tight, fast and professional. And the lead singer is something special. As the poster before me wrote, this is perfect pitch, and also a strong voice, can hold an ascending note for multi-seconds at a time.
i said to me wife, this is a voice that can shatter glass.
i see they just had their first release, and i intend to buy.
i feel they will have many more releases as the lead singer is young, quite confident , and i sense a well deserved ambitiousness as i feelNoSpeedLimit will not be an unknown quantity much longer, this will be a Blue Grass Headliner soon enough.
Excellent.......2006-07-12
We saw this band live in Virginia and fell in love with their sound. The are very entertaining and the lead singer has a pure, pitch-perfect voice. A great listen.

Favorite album of all time!.......2003-12-18
This album is my favorite gospel album of all time. Ricky Dillard is just pure energy! In the arena of male directors, he rates high up there with other powerful directors like James Hall, Tyrone Block, Hezikiah Walker, the late Earnest Davis (Wilmington Chester Mass) and the original ball of energy (the late) Olanda Draper. From the opening track to the last, Ricky Dillard proves that he and Donald Lawrence are a production combination that works. I compare this album's refreshing originality to the surprising originality of Kirk Franklin and the Family's first album. The song "That's just like Jesus" and the title track "No Limit" are this albums only urban tracks (which is what I find refreshing). All the other selections are made for Sunday service. The fast tempo song "Faint Not" is so high energy, so spiritual that it will strike a cord with every Christian who loves to dance. It's among the most high-energy gospel music arrangements I've ever heard.
The youthful song "God's Will" has been sung by choirs at almost every church I've gone. It's even on my list of material to introduce to my group even though the song is almost 4 years old. It's a classic song that promises to live as long as similar show stopping choir hits by artist like John P. Key. Every person who really enjoys gospel music should have this project in his or her music library and everyone I know does.

HANDS DOWN, THE BEST GOSPEL ALBUM OF 2000!!!.......2002-09-20
When I first heard this CD, I didn't even know that it was being released. All of a sudden, my brother came home with a new Ricky Dillard CD. Man... I heard "Holy Place," and almost lost it. I was like WHOA!!! Every song ministers to you and hits you right square in the soul. The remake of Darius Brooks' "The Promise" is outstanding! "God's Will Is What I Want" is one of the most unique songs I have heard since the days of Keith Pringle. I could go on a rampant about every song on the album, but you get my point by now. Well, I might as well mention this one last song: "Oh The Joy" is probably my favorite track on the album, because it's just too smooth! This is one of those albums that you take with you in your car, especially on long trips, and just listen to it all the way through. Every single song is well written and led by the annointing. It's amazing to me how there can be so much versatility on one album. It's almost as if 10 or 11 different artists just got together and came up with the best songs they've ever done, and put them on one album. Anyway, this is terrific, it doesn't get any better, and EVERYONE should go out and get this.
(I realize that my review is amlost 3 years late, but it's My mistake. I thought I reviewed it when it came out, but I didn't. So everyone probably already has this album and would agree with mw that it's Out of This Planet!!! But, if you don't, Still go and get it.)
-Peace-

On this record, David Daniels, one of our finest, most sought-after countertenors, adds a wide variety of styles, from Italian bel canto, popular classics, and American art- and folksongs to his signature Renaissance and Baroque repertoire. He appears to be equally at home in all of them, naturally adapting his vocalism, phrasing, diction, and delivery to each idiom, while his uniquely beautiful voice retains its pure, floating quality and intense expressiveness. His astonishing breath control lets him spin and sustain endless phrases; his middle range is dark and warm, his top bright and radiant. (Hearing those ringing E-flats, Es and Fs from a male voice never ceases to surprise.) The program seems aimed at including something for everybody, but reversing the usual route, arrives at the European 15th century by way of the American 20th, opening with John Kander's title song and songs by Alec Wilder, Harold Arlen, and Leonard Bernstein, who is represented by the frighteningly contemporary anti-war protest "So Pretty" and a song from "Mass." Three beautiful Spanish Renaissance songs and three famous English songs by Dowland and Purcell are followed by three luxuriously romantic, intimately caressing ones by Bellini; the program ends with three popular favorites, two American, one French. The only false note is struck by two overly familiar versions of "Ave Maria": Gounod's, a skillful extraction of a fine melody from Bach's C-major Prelude (sung here in D-flat), and Schubert's, a setting of Ellen's prayer from Sir Walter Scott's "Lady of the Lake." Craig Ogden's otherwise excellent guitar arrangements of the original piano and lute accompaniments are less successful here; the texture is too thin to support and sustain the intensity of the music. --Edith Eisler

Star-crossed Crossover.......2007-03-13
There are many fine ways to hear David Daniels -- the Handel arias CD for instance, or the unique and wonderful performance he delivers on the DVD of Handel's Theodora. This CD, as other reviewers have declared, is half wonderful, half awful. "Innocent" music has to be sung by innocent voices. The Berlin Philharmonic can't play mariachi, Mick Jagger can't sing Danny Boy, and David Daniels shouldn't sing Shenandoah.
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-01-29
My problem with this disc has nothing to do with David Daniel's singing; rather it has to do with the line-up of songs. Some of them simply do not suit his voice. I really don't want to hear him singing:"My Shining Hour"-"A Simple Song"-"Beautiful Dreamer" or "Shenandoah"; and I'm not really fond of hearing the "Ave Marias". Not that he didn't do justice to them;he did! But the remainder of the selections were perfect for him and I think the contrast between the 2 genre is hard to take. The great songs on the album are great indeed:the 3 songs by Bellini;the 2 songs by Dowland;2 songs by Purcell and Martini's "Plaisir d'amour". I would still buy the album for these songs alone for they are performed with skill and emotion.
Crossing Over in Dreamy Style....David Daniels Scores Again.......2004-08-05
When I realized Liza Minnelli and Barbra Streisand covered the first two songs on this CD, I had to admit I was a bit worried that "A Quiet Thing" would be one of those crossover albums that famous opera singers need to do to please their management companies. But leave it to countertenor David Daniels to continue venturing into new territory for his rarefied voice type. Although Baroque-loving traditionalists may balk at his choice of repertoire this time, he paints a broad musical canvas along with guitarist Craig Ogden, encompassing American folk, English and Spanish renaissance, Italian bel canto, two versions of "Ave Maria", and even some Tin Pan Alley. This could have been an unwieldy smorgasbord for a lesser singer, but never underestimate Daniels' vocal dexterity, incredible coloratura and superb taste. Daniels and Ogden have really turned this program into a cohesive vision full of simply beautiful music wonderfully realized through voice and guitar - probably the best such coupling I have heard since Kathleen Battle and Christopher Parkening's "Pleasures of Their Company" more than a decade ago.
Standout tracks include Alec Wilder's melancholy "Blackberry Winter", a contemporary piece which ranks right up there with any of Daniels' much-revered Handel arias; John Dowland's "Come Again, Sweet Love", so familiar yet perfect for his voice; the one-two Americana sequence of "Beautiful Dreamer" and "Shenandoah"; and the title track by John Kander, which he sings with a languid quality that adds dimension to its original meaning. Such flights of vocal beauty make one wonder when he will tackle the Sondheim songbook. This is a terrific album, ideal for those who want an introduction to not only the countertenor voice but also the artistry of David Daniels.
Reveries.......2004-04-04
A QUIET THING: Songs for Voice and Guitar is a unique, idiosyncratic, irresistible collection of songs that span from contemporary melodies from Broadway to English lute songs to versions of Ave Maria (Bach/Gounod and Schubert) to American folksongs. And as if this variety of communication weren't enough, these songs are performed by countertenor par excellence David Daniels and the subtle and sensitive guitarist Craig Ogden. Both performers are intensely musical, intuitive interpreters of poetry and melody line and offer popular ballads from the stage of today with as much sincerity as bel canto songs of Bellini and the other-worldly Dowland and Purcell. For those unfamiliar with the countertenor oeuvre then this is a beautiful introduction to that vocal quality. David Daniels is internationally celebrated for his resurrecting the original countertenor roles in Handel operas and his voice has more power on the opera stage in this unfamiliar vocal range than those many regular tenors. Not being a fan of crossover recordings (big opera stars singing Broadway show tunes) I admittedly approached this album with reservation. But listening to these two men changes all that. Here in this aptly titled collection Daniels proves that his soft and quiet range is just as admirable as his 'big role arias'. The collaboration between Daniels and Ogden is clear and pitch perfect and the result is a recital - no, salon - of intimately communicated moments. An album to treasure.
Food for the Soul.......2004-03-02
Having everything from Marylin Manson and The Offspring to Rossini and Offenbach in my CD collection, I'm certainly not a die-hard classical music fan. Driving home one night (stuck in peak-hour traffic) I heard "A Simple Song" (tack 15 from this album) on the radio. It was just so simple, so peaceful and joyous. I had never heard of David Daniels, but I bought the album and have listened to it constantly. It is superb. Even if you think you don't like the counter-tenor (male alto) voice, try this album, you won't regret it.

Stands the test of time.......2001-12-20
I bought my first Fred Small album (yes, album, not CD) years ago at the Oscar Wilde Bookstore in New York. Heart of the Apaloosa. It gew on me until I had to have more. I have since bought Fred's entire catalogue. All are wonderful, but No Limit is still my favorite. It is, in some ways, more spiritual and draws on many of the deepest emotions that we all share. The highlights to me are Leslie and Scrambled Eggs and Prayers, the latter because it takes place close to home and I remember the actual incident well.
All Fred Small's work is great, but to me this is his best. He deserves more fame than he has received, but then again, fame might destroy that which is so special.
Fred Small moves my heart!.......2000-06-01
This CD is AMAZING! As always, Fred's lyrics and music evoke thought and change in his listener. His songs, "Leslie is different" and "Cranes over HIroshima" are powerful stories that moved me to examine the way I view the world. I love Fred's work!

"Where you at, whoadie? / I'm over here, whoadie!" As the hip-hop ice age begins to thaw, it's become apparent that Master P's the megamogul who holds the Dirty South's attention. But just when you thought he'd gone as far as possible, Master P takes his career to the next level. Game Face, his first album since signing a major partnership deal with Universal Records, moves P into the international zone. The music is still the same blend of booty bass beats and bubblegum pop hooks, but production values are extra crispy clean and P's vocals have acquired a suppleness that was missing in his earlier records. Lil' Romeo, C-Murder, and Silkk the Shocker play major roles in this game, lending support on "Ghetto Ballin'" and "Back on Top," while newcomer Sera-Lynn adds flair to the square biz bounce of "Real Love." Game Face shows why Master P is a hip-hop soldier with no limit. --Rebecca Levine
Customer Reviews:
Thank god............2007-02-22
Thank god that the New No Limit has arrived. From now on every CD released on this label will not cast a bad shadow on the one's released on the Old No Limit
GameFace by Master P.......2006-02-14
New label, New Year, New No Limit, new trash.
Music mogul Master P has a rich, glorious legacy in rap, but Game Face is by far the worst album he has released. With his new deal with Universal and the erection of The New No Limit, the hype put into this album was just that - hype.
Produced by the likes of Soulja Music, Neptunes, Dr. Dre, and Timbaland, and featuring the No Limit Soldiers, you might accuse P of selling the farm for quick sales. But Out of 14 songs there are only a possible five songs that you can listen to and enjoy.
One of the better songs is "The Block," a touching a song about his mother being absent as he flipped drugs on the harsh New Orleans streets. This album is family affair all right. Unfortunately for the aging P, his own son outshines his father on each song ("Ghetto Ballin" and "Back On Top") that he is featured on.
His single "Ooohhhwee," featuring new No Limit Soldier 5th Ward Weebie, basically tells you what you are going to get on Game Face. You get a ghetto ballin', bragging, thuggin', No Limit family trying to get being back on top. Game Face contains many samples from old classics, which make for P treading on material that should have been left in the Puffy-era. Sorry to say, but his album makes his previous album Ghetto Postage look like Nas' classic album Illmatic.
If Game Face indicative of the New No Limit, listeners are certain to quickly move on to the next new thing.
two good songs....the rest is trash.......2005-07-28
a typical master p album. i bought it for $3 so it was worth it for two songs. "ghetto ballin" has a hot old kurtis blow beat, verses are a little better than usual new orleans rapping. really catchy song. the other hot one is the single "ooooohwee". this beat is incredibly catchy even though the rapping is bad. as for the rest of the songs they pretty much suck. if master p doesn't have a hot beat in a song, he's hopeless. "we want dough" would've passed for a decent beat except the robotic sounding girls in the chorus. it ruins it. aside from that don't spend any more than i did on this album cuz it's 90% filler!
excellent album.......2004-12-15
This is a great album by Master P, just about every single song is good, which unfortunately is rare in the hip hop world.
