Only Love Remains is a soul soothing journey. JJ's gentle voice, accompanied by her husband Dave on guitar, delights the human spirit. Her lyrics are heartfelt jewels that relate to righteous living and the struggles of the christian and non christian alike. I had the pleasure of seeing her play a live acoustic set at my church in Corpus Christi and I was stunned. It was the most delightful and personal show I have ever seen. She is authentic and a down to earth singer and songwriter and "Only Love Remains," touched my heart. If I had to recommend just a few tracks I would begin with the inspiring "Thank You," in which she thanks God for coming down off his throne to save her soul (or our souls as it might be). Its hard to keep my eyes dry when she reminds us, in this song, of God's wonderful grace. "All the Beauty," touches on the relationship she had with a youg student of hers. It shows just how powerful friendships can be and how closely other people can touch our lives. Finally, "Everything is Changing," has great flow and a catchy chorus. Dave Heller's background vocals and harmonizing also add flavor to an already tasty compilation. JJ just sings with so much confidence and substance that you can almost see the talent oozing out of her pores.

    Christoph Prégardien has a beautiful voice, well-trained and evenly produced over a considerable range, sweet and clear at the top and with a pleasant baritonal quality in the low register. But critics have sometimes questioned his interpretive skills, finding his singing colorless, with little depth of characterization or feeling. That is the case here to some extent--for instance, his delivery of Schubert's "Der Leiermann" fails to convey the haunting tragedy of the song. But for this disk Prégardien has chosen material that is for the most part quiet and lyrical in nature and doesn't ask for much in the way of expressive depth, and the results are lovely; his clear diction and thoughtful phrasing make these songs a pleasure to hear. Prégardien is accompanied by the very skillful guitarist Thomas Hoppstock, who presumably made the arrangements of the original piano parts; they provide an intimate setting that supports and complements the voice well. For these pieces, at least, Prégardien is very much worth hearing, and the disc is warmly recommended. --Alex Morin

    This duo is quite simply the finest voice and guitar duo I have ever heard since Pears and Bream in the 60's, or Schreier and Ragossnig in the 70's. Pregardien is an A-List oratorio and lied singer in Europe with a profound gift for interpretation of the text, while Hoppstock is absolutley one of the most refined and virtuosic guitarists of all time. His nickname as the "German Barrueco" is an understatement, but not entirely unfair. They perform regularly in Germany to this day (2007) and their amazingly tight ensemble on this CD is evidence of thier tremendous experience and mutual respect.

    Hoppstock's arrangement of 7 Brahms songs here is a revelation, and although Schubert songs are often heard with guitar, they have never recieved a more polished and inspired presentaion than you will find on this disc. On the lighter side, Spohr's original guitar songs (though not my favorites, why not Giuliani's Sechs Lieder?) provide a respite from the strum und drang on either side of the recital.

    I can't stop listening to this. Very highly recommended.

    This is a collection of "easy listening", beautiful lieder played by two fine artists. The guitar transcriptions render the songs even more light-hearted. Although the album is titled "Songs of Love & Death", don't expect the depth, serenity and saddness of Brahm's songs on these themes here. It is still a quiet, moving cd to listen to at night.

    The CD is actually by Marc Heller, an operatic tenor, accompanied by Alfred Heller on piano. The singer ruins most of the varied material by feeling it necessary to swell and show off his volume during every song. He seems incapable of subtlety or reading a lyric. Virtually all the material is spoilt by this vulgar display and unfeeling delivery.

    4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Sondheim Recital.......2000-07-09

    This is a wonderful CD to introduce the music of Stephen Sondheim to those people who usually only listen to classical music. Most of Sondheim's music is only accompanied by piano, except for the song "later" which is accompanied by cello like it is in the original production of "A little night music". Taking away the usual orchestrations and tackling these songs in a classical way has an interesting effect. It proves that it is possible to place Sondheim's music and lyrics out of their original context without losing it's strength and impact. What we get as a result is an interesting recital of songs, which does justice to both the composer and the performer. Marc Heller gives us fine interpretations of Sondheim's music and with his classical trained voice he is a joy to listen to. It's obvious that Heller has actually performed in several Sondheim shows because he's very aware of what he is singing about and he knows how to handle this music. We also get a varied program of Sondheim's music. With the exception of "Assassins" we get music from all the musicals for which Sondheim wrote both music and lyrics an on top of that there is the song "Take me to the world" from "Evening Primrose" and the song "Silly people" which was originally discarded and later used in "Marry me a little". I would recommend this album to all those people who would like to be introduced to Sondheim's music and to those who'd like to hear his music performed in a different style.

        After winning numerous competitions and singing awards in his teenage years and singing light opera, musicals, and formal church solos professionally to earn much of his way during his university years, Andrew Heller turned his attentions to high technology. He spent 23 years at IBM working his way to the very top echelons of technical and business management at the company. Among his awards and titles was the honor of being the youngest person ever appointed to the position of IBM Fellow, a lifelong title. He also served as the head (president) of the Independent Business Unit (IBU) at IBM, located in Austin, Texas, that created the family of computers and software now known as the RS6000, the Power PC family of microprocessors (that are now in Apple computers) and AIX.

        After leaving IBM in the late 1980s, he has spent the last 14+ years in the creation and building of young and new high technology companies both as a venture capitalist and as and entrepreneur, a career that he continues to pursue today. Although he started these activities in the famed Silicon Valley, he returned to his beloved Austin in 1993 where he has remained.

        Throughout the period from the late 1960s through the 1990s he continued singing to his wife of over three decades and a few select friends at anniversaries, birthdays, and other important family events. He also sang occasionally at various charity events and benefits as well as at an occasional party, but he did not pursue singing as a serious vocation or avocation. It was his wife, Mary Ann who finally convinced him by presenting him with a Christmas present of his first CD, to open his heart and his songs to a broader audience and to record CDs that would be available to the general public. The reaction to his first CD "Be My Love" sold to people in the central Texas area has been remarkable and surprised both he and his wife.         El Paso is Andrew's first effort at recording his long loved country, western and folk ballads, many of which he has sung and enjoyed since childhood. This CD and especially the original recording exists as the result of requests from several friends and admirers living in Austin, New York, Los Angeles, Silicon Valley, Maui, and Nashville among other places. Sprinkled among the songs on the CD are old favorites, some new CW songs, and a little known old tune from the hills of West Virginia that Andrew learned as a child.

        Also in the works for 2004 is a Christmas CD that will be in stores in time for Christmas festivities. This CD brings back many of the great musical sounds and well known songs that have warmed hearts for generations but have not been recorded like this for many years. The CD has something for everyone who loves great music, fabulous singing, and Texas swinging.

        Both Andrew and his wife remain deeply committed to Austin and Texas and both support and serve in many educational, musical, and philanthropic organizations

          I am very happy to see this recording and hope that it continues to be available.
          It is a little known masterwork and a marvelous recording.

          There is much to enjoy on many levels, first the story itself speaks to our times.
          Then there is the skill and value of the composition itself. I am particularly struck by the coloristic effects and wide range of mood and action. I can hear that Villa Lobos was aware of all types of music, and also could use all the variety in a unified work.

          The orchestra is very fine and Fleming is superb in voice and musicianship.
          Conductor Alfred Heller brings much love and skill and knowledge to this work.

          5 out of 5 stars A hidden masterwork.......2000-06-18

          This work originated as a film score by Villa Lobos for the failed "Green Mansions" film of the late 1950's. However very little of the Villa Lobos music actually was heard in that film score. So Villa Lobos reworked his music and what one hear's today is not a film score, but something integrated, warm and wonderful that tells the audio story of the Hudson novel on one level, and also the modern tale of the extinction of species the fires burning in the Amazon basin represents. It is like an opera in the sense that melodies occur and reoccur later on in the work. The episodic nature of the music carries forward the tale in Villa Lobos' unique aural universe. The poems that Dora Vasconsoles wrote and that were integrated with this work reflect the poignancy and joy of life that were a part of the Hudson heroine, Rima's relationship to her Amazonian world. I saw the original film starring Audrey Hepburn and was disappointed but taken by her portrayal of Rima. Soon after, the Forest of the Amazon was issued on the United Artists Label and had Bidu Sayao's singing and I loved that recording. But this present recording with Renee Fleming is a wonder. The Moscow orchestra plays well, and I found that musical details are so much more present in this recent CD. I think this music is one of Villa Lobos' masterpieces and should be more widely heard. Of course, this recording must also be readily available to be heard by a wider audience.
