Awesome CD.......2007-05-11
Have enjoyed this CD immensely with our four-year old. Great price for the quality. Thank you.
He started dancing as soon as we put it on!.......2007-01-09
My 12 month old loves this CD and happily bops away to the music (in the car he sometimes even starts singing!). We like it too and not being very well versed in Classical music, it is a nice mix for us.
Better than baby einstein.......2006-02-26
This is a great CD, with great music, at a great price. Everyone seems to love Baby Einstein, but I don't like the plinking music on those CD's, I like real orchestral pieces to stimulate my child. This is exactly what parents need, at a good price!
great music at a great price.......2006-02-02
I got this cd to use as background when putting my 18 month old to sleep and for car rides. So far it has not made it out of the car. The cd is wonderful. The first song is the Luftansa airline comercial song (that is what my husband calls it) and is beautiful. I didn't think my husband would enjoy the cd at all but he doesn't mind one bit listening to it, he actually will put it on himself when we get in the car. My daughter loves it and will often start nodding her head back and forth to songs. I actually listen to it even when my daughter is not in the car. The music is soft and relaxing but not boring. It is also one of the only cd's that my in laws don't mind listening to when they are in the car with us.
I only paid like $4 here on amazon for it and I gladdly would of paid more for such a great cd. Its a great cd for such a great price!
A Wonderful CD for all ages.......2002-11-03
My whole family has enjoyed this CD. It is very upbeat and easy to listen to. I think there is something for everyone on this one.

Absolutely Beautiful!.......2002-03-02
Two words describe the music found on this CD: ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL! The beauty of the vocals and music combine to allow one to transcend from the daily grind to a world of beauty. Bravo!
Where is Amore I?.......2001-02-16
This CD is a selection of arias from Italian operas. Most of the time when you get a compilation like this, you feel lucky if you like 2/3 of the selections. In this case, whoever did the selecting did a great job, there isn't a clinker in the lot. About half of the arias are by Puccini, the rest are by Verdi, Donizetti, and Giordano. Singers include Kiri Te Kanawa, Luciano Pavarotti, Richard Tucker, and Andrea Rost. There is enough variety to keep the whole CD interesting, yet the mood is consistent throughout. The sound is generally quite good, and while I am not generally a fan of live recordings, the audience response in the performance by Pavarotti really does add excitement to the presentation. Given the title of this CD, I assumed this was the second in a series, and I liked it so much I went looking for the original. Unfortunately, I can find no other CD on the Sony label titled Amore - too bad.

The title "A Portrait" would suggest some sort of a cohesive look at this talented Bulgarian mezzo-soprano. But she is so astonishingly versatile, one wonders if there are at least two singers at work here. Her more athletic coloratura moments in the Rossini and Donizetti arias would suggest some sort of slavic Cecila Bartoli while her more soulful, lyrical moments in Gluck's Orfeo would suggest a heavier voice like Kathleen Ferrier. Could it be that she has it all--or at least as much as one could hope for in a single singer? --David Patrick Stearns
Customer Reviews:
Kasarova and the Amazing Multi-Colored Dream Voice.......2006-04-06
This was my introduction to Vesselina Kasarova CD. I first saw her in a clip of Il Barbiere di Siviglia (singing Una voce poco fa) on Classic Arts Showcase program one night and was amazed at how beautifully she sings the coloratura piece while doing complicated acting manuevers on stage.
The really great thing about Kasarova is how she communicates the essence of each aria with her voice. She doesn't sing 'Konzertzant'. Her instrument, for some reason, doesn't sound as big on recording as it does live (where it is quite plenty big, very lusterous and agile), and she uses many vocal colors to bring out the different character of her roles (a lot of time in the same aria to show the change of emotion). It is unconventional, but it works really well in the story telling.
Her coloratura is amazing. It is fast and fluidly effortless sounding... and she sings all the notes!! A true Rossinian mezzo with great extension at the top. She also incorporates the ornaments into the music so well it gives the piece a character rather than standing out at odd with the music. Kasarova is so subtle in her interpretations that each time I replay an aria I catch some nuances I missed before.
Her 'Che faro senza Euridice' may sound 'simple' on the first try, but it is quite understatedly wistful and gives the picture of a devastatingly drained Orfeo who has lost all hope. It gets better the more closely you listen to it. Her 'Voi che sapete' is of a Cherubino who is young and enthusiastically in love.
She uses wider vibrato in her bel canto pieces which fit the music well. Her Rosina has a split personality demarcated at 'ma', a note that turns an perky love-struck young thing into a potentially vengeful witch in such dramatic way that I can visualize her eyes narrowing and her fangs growing just by hearing it. Her renditions of 'o mio Fernando' and 'Se Romeo t'uccise un figlio' are unforgetable. Kasarova gives you all she has and it is wonderful.
Very good.......2004-03-19
I find this collection interesting, but not necessarily to the singers advantage. She sings what she sings well, but there is an "overblown" quality from time to time. Sona la tromba (the first selection) has a rough edge to it. I like this singer very much in other things I have her in. This is a good CD, but I think it would have served her more to choose some other selections. Her Verdi is excellent, but we are not treated to it. Her Orfeo lacks that really rich lower register that would make it tell. Still, a great buy and a great collection.
Kasarova Is the Current "Gold Standard" of Living Mezzos.......2003-11-14
When this CD was first released, I happened to hear the track with "Una voce poco fa" played on a classical-music radio station. For over 50 years I had been a devoted "fan" of instrumental classical music, but, in just 3 minutes, Kasarova's performance expanded and altered my mind and heart. When I attempted to purchase an audio tape of her singing, I discovered none was for sale anywhere. My solution? Buy the CD--and THEN buy a CD player. Five or six years later, I own over 1800 CDs, about 2/3 of them operatic music. My preferences are now mainly for bel canto singers who are mezzos or contraltos. Rossini, Handel, and Bellini are my favorite composers. Why? Chiefly because of my chance encounter with Ms. Kasarova's wonderfully flexible, rich, warm voice. She caused me to get season tickets to the Met for the past four years (where I was finally able to hear/see her in THE BARBER OF SEVILLE--the best of the four performances I've attended). For purposes of easy comparison, I have "imported" tracks from this CD onto my computer's hard drive along with those of several dozen other mezzos singing the same arias. After many hours of back-to-back listening, in almost all cases I greatly prefer the versions of Kasarova. This CD is an excellent "starter" purchase for any beginners who wish to explore what opera has to offer. For "experienced" listeners, it is a must-have!
Very unique and enjoyable voice.......2000-07-22
Although Kasarova still has a bit to learn about singing, she is clearly on her way to becoming a great interpreter of the mezzo-soprano repertoire. There were a few pieces that I certainly do not long to hear repeated, but for the most part, the album is enjoyable.
My favourite selections were the coloratura pieces. "Una voce poco fa" has been sung to DEATH already, but Kasarova adds something new to it, especially in the lower register. It's nice to hear this piece performed by a true mezzo. The "Voi che sapete" was also very nicely done (it fell wonderfully in her passagio), although "Batti, batti" was not memorable (it felt somewhat monotonous---maybe because Kasarova was beginning to tire with the high tessitura). I especially enjoyed her rendition of O mio Fernando---I would like to hear her sing "Stride la Vampa" (Trovatore) in the future.
The only piece that really didn't thrill me was the Orfeo "Che faro." This piece was written for a good rich contralto, and Kasarova's tone simply wasn't appropriate to carry this aria affectively (she really sounds like she's straining the low notes, which can't really be disguised because they occur so many times).
I listen to Kasarova whenever I'm bored with Larmore or Bartoli. She has a certain husky tendency in her voice that is extremely desirable but not present in the voices of these other two divas. This is a wonderful album to introduce you to her unique voice!

Amazon.com essential recording
Once again, Bulgarian mezzo-soprano Vesselina Kasarova proves that one can forget even the fabulous Cecilia Bartoli. With a voice at least twice that of Bartoli's, with the same agility in fast music, and capable of a similar number of shadings from ppp to fff (Bartoli can go from ppppp to f), Kasarova here tackles some of the same repertory as her Italian counterpart. We discover that her Cenerentola is much more easily wounded and far gentler, and maybe even more appealing than Bartoli's. But forget comparisons and just listen to Kasarova's infectious, seductive scene from L'Italiana and the amazing, breakneck finale to La Donna del Lago. Marvel at her manly singing in Arsace's big scene from Semiramide (totally different from Horne's and no less riveting), and bask in the charm of her Armida. Enjoy a scene from the almost unknown Bianca e Falliero. And just to surprise yourself, listen to Kasarova in a duet from Rossini's Otello and be knocked out by her foray up to a high D natural. Kasarova is joined in this and a couple of other scenes by sweet-voiced tenor Juan Diego Florez. Arthur Fagen conducts throughout as if this were Kasarova's show--which it most certainly is. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
Pyrotechnique showcase.......2007-05-02
Reviewers concentrated mostly on Vesselina Kasarova. Certainly, this is a soprano with an astounding range - her aria in track 4 demonstrates a natural contralto voice, yet in more places than one she sores up way beyond the high C, to the envy of many sopranos.
To me, the duets in tracks 3, 5 and 7 with the then 25 year-old Juan Diego Florez are in a similar degree revelations of Florez's amazing voice.
Call him 'graceful tenor' or what not, his is a distinctive voice between a counter-tenor and tenor that only he possesses. But living with the high range is not his only skill - he has fine phrasing, sensitive musicality and wonderful intonation, even at the early age of 25!
The vocal talents displayed by the two singers in this recording are simply mesmerising.
Impassioned and polished singing.......2007-01-09
This is a great CD. At least one critic suggested earlier in her career that Kasarova should stick to the dramatic roles and stay off the bel canto repertoire, but she has certainly developed since then. The performances are beautifully crafted, with the added excitement of a substantial voice and real dramatic flair.
If you want to hear the most exciting performance ever of "Cruda sorte" go to Della Jones. But all in all this is a wonderful CD.
An exquisite Falcon.......2004-02-03
Madame Kasarova is an exquisite Falcon-Soprano (Natural Mezzo capable of doing soprano-roles) in the tradition of del los Angeles. Her mezzo-range is most powerful but she has acuti that would make sopranos pea-green with envy. I love her in Rossini and if you like romantic opera buy "Werther" with her as Charlotte, the most fantastic Charlotte since Victoria de los Angeles. She also AMAZING in Donizetti, esp. as Giovanna in "Anna Bolena". Enjoy this fabulous CD!
Vocally Astounding.......2001-07-12
In terms of vocal power, talent and technique, this may well be the most impressive collection of Rossini arias on record. This is a unique, very powerful voice, with shades of the rare agility of a coloratura contralto, as we are told Malibran was.
Much of the lightheartedness of Rossini's world is lost in these readings, though--and this will be a problem for many listeners accustomed to the aura of playfulness convention has taught us is central to Rossini's work, the tongue-in-cheek naivete of the Rossini Heroine. And while there IS at times more gravity in the readings than the music seems to demand, this untraditional interpretation also challenges many popular preconceptions about the a major composer of the mezzo/contralto repitoire.
And when it works--wow. Kasarova's "Una volta c'era...Un soave non so che" from *La Cenerentola* is the most rivoting performance of the aria I have ever heard. With simply a bit more variation in her shadings, Kasarova will become even better than she is, which is really, really good.
Different mezzo voice.......2001-03-31
By far, this is not a voice like Bartoli's. It is quite different and can not be compared to anyone else. You will not find the chest notes of Horne, neither Bartoli's charm. I am not an expert, but I can tell you that the security and the power contained in this bulgarian mezzo is worth trying.

Album Description
"Radio Amor is a brilliant soundtrack for daydreaming, and Tim Hecker's effective variations on a few central ideas once again show a gifted composer at work." - PITCHFORKMEDIA
It was January 1996 on the coast of Honduras. The musician in question was looking to catch a ride with a local vessel to the neighboring islands. There was one shrimping vessel in port that day, and its captain Jimmy was willing to take disheveled hippies on board. This album is dedicated to the idea of Jimmy the high-wire shrimper--misplaced nautical charts, trade winds, shortwave miscommunication, midnight whispers, amorxxx.
Alien8 Recordings is reissuing Radio Amor, originally released on Mille Plateaux in 2002, in order to maintain the availability of one of their label's most important artists. The recording has been out of print for two years, out of the grasp of Hecker's growing legions of admirers. And currently, Hecker is still basking in the universally glowing reception of this year's Harmony in Ultraviolet on Kranky (Score 8.7/Pitchfork's Best New Music). Radio Amor is a key release in Hecker's discography, bridging the output between 2001's Haunt Me and 2004's Mirages.

Bon appetit!.......2006-09-01
This 2CDs set is quite a good compilation of arias from Mozart's best known operas. The cast is awesome, too.
The trouble is Mozart wrote so many wonderful arias that when you try to compile them from many operas, lots of the great ones like 'Non piu di fiori' and 'Deh per questo istante solo' from La clemenza di Tito get left out (tho having Teresa Berganza's version of 'Parto ma tu ben mio' makes up for it somewhat). A lot of chorus pieces from Idomeneo but none of Idamante's arias, no Elettra's famous rage aria, and no 'Traurigkeit' from 'Die Entfuehrung'?
Bottom line, all the arias included are marvellously sung. I think the line up could have been better, tho. It won't fill you up, perhaps, but it will wet your appetite for complete set of the operas included.

WHY WERE SOME OF THESE ITEMS RELEASED IN THE FIRST PLACE?.......2006-08-16
Plain and simply, Maria Callas was the operatic icon of the Twentieth Century. The vocal, musical, and dramatic coponents of her art totaled a "complete package" that no one, living or historical, could come within miles of. My gripe here is with EMI, who, while they recorded Callas extensively in the standard repertoire (I am not including the studio recitals here), they completely missed the boat by not recording the great diva in roles like Lady Macbeth, Anna Bolena, Imogene in "Pirata", Elena in "Vespri", Abigalle in "Nabucco", and a few others. They have tried in recent years to correct this error by issuing live performances (with barely adequate sound) of "Bolena", "Macbeth", and "Pirata", etc. But --- and this is very important --- in many instances, the pressings that EMI have acquired sound even worse than the pirate pressings on which these performances first appeared. Truly, we should be grateful that EMI were brave enough to studio-record Callas in "Norma", "Puritani","Sonnambula" and "Il Turco in Italia".
This recording is a case in point. To start with, I am convinced that the abbreviated "Butterfly" aria in the beginning is NOT Callas. True, the speaking voice bears an astonishing likeness to her, but the singing does not. Even at the age of twelve, there should have been at least a hint of the Callas sound, however undeveloped. Someone spliced in another voice, I am sure. Yes, I know that I could be wrong, but I doubt it. The Proch variations are spectacular and they prove what a coloratura technician Callas was, but the sound is so introlerably bad that I find it impossible to listen to. All of the other items here are represented elsewhere on EMI releases in much better sound - though Callas herself may not have been in as excellent vocal condition.
Yes -- we are grateful to EMI for making so much of Callas' work available. But let's look at it from the $$$$$ standpoint. EMI has made megabucks on Callas, and while her artistry is certainly worth it, I wonder how much of a favor EMI is doing Callas by releasing material which she herself would have rejected, especially given the inferior pressings that EMI has settled for. It's not a tribute to the supreme diva of the Twentieth century ----- it's a matter of the all mighty dollar!!!!
This is a great CD! And Freni is only adequate in Puccini!.......2006-07-13
Sempion, for all his unintelligent reviews, would seem like the stupid one here. For all his taste for opera, he should first understand what a good singer and a great singer is, and obviously he seems to think that singers who didnt' dig into their roles as much as other great divas are greater than others. He is so full of mediocrity, stupidity, and diatribical tendencies that I would dismiss him as a fool. Ignore him, or laugh at this New Yorker's unintelligent and unhelpful responses. And he says I'm not intelligent. Ha!
As for this disc, well, it's amazing! It showcases the great voice of Callas playing around with different repertoire (and doing it well too!!!) at the greatest height of her interpretive powers. I recommend this disc to Callas fans and non-Callas fans alike.
Live in Concert - Maria Callas.......2006-02-25
This is a fabulous 2 CD set of live concerts by Maria Callas from 1949 to 1959. It demonstrates her unique range from dramatic soprano arias to The Bell Song. A must-have for all Callas lovers.
Out of this world.......2004-09-27
The album is brilliant. It has some very great pieces of Callas and is a must to have for anyone even remotely interested in Opera. Trust me, the music will take you somewhere out of this world.
Callas awful at Puccini? How stupid can someone be?.......2004-04-08
I understand that Amazon is trying to "cultivate different opinions" but there is a difference between an Opinion and sheer STUPIDITY... Callas awful at Pucini? Callas is the undisputable Tosca and Madama Butterfly of the 20th century and the only dramatic Mimi and Manon with the rest of the singers being from utterly inadequate (Tebaldi) to completely boring (Kanawa, Freni)...
I never expected to read so stupid and unbelievable remarks about Callas and it really faschinates me the fact that they appear to have been written by a greek person. No wonder Callas left Greece if there was such stupidity and ignorance she had to face...

Lorin Maazel's legendary performance of Firebird Suite.......2005-09-25
This compact disc re-releases two of Lorin Maazel's and the Berlin Radio Symphony's albums from the 1950s and 1960s. The CD features music from three ballets inspired by folklore and folk melodies - Miguel de Falla's El Amor Brujo (gypsy music) and Three-Cornered Hat (Andalusian folk dances) and Igor Stravinsky's Firebird (classic Russian fairy tale).
The two de Falla pieces are beautifully performed with Grace Bumbry supplying the rich, exotic vocals in El Amor Brujo. But the highlight of the CD is Maazel's outstanding 1957 performance of Firebird Suite. Considered by some to be the definitive performance of Firebird, this recording stirs one's emotions from the slow, subtle tones of the introduction to the nostalgic longing of the Princesses ronde, the frenzied Kashchei's dance and the haunting lullaby, right through to the finale where the predominate strains of the foregoing sections intertwine and come together in a dizzying, exhilarating climax. This re-release allows a whole new generation of listeners to experience this fine performance. It comes with my highest recommendations.
An Excellent Re-Release.......2001-12-01
This album is a release of works from the mid 60's (the Falla pieces) and the late 50's (Stravinsky's "Firebird"). The remastering was excellently done on the Falla pieces, but the "Firebird" is showing its age (an occasional tape pop, but then I listen with headphones, so it is noticeable). I used to stay away from DG CD releases whenever possible, because I found them to have a "harsh" sound (unlike their LP releases, which I would always buy when available), but they seemed to have gotten their act together. All three pieces were digital processed to remove the analog tape hiss (well done, I might add) and to add additional stereo separation (also well done) to yield a very enjoyable album. I bought this for the Falla pieces to replace an LP I bought in 1974 (the same recording) and I am very happy with the results. Buy this one if you are looking for a good Falla "El Amor Brujo (The Love Spell)" or a good non-vocal "Hat". Skip this one if you are looking for a "Firebird".
Curiously, even though the "Firebird" has top billing, it really is relegated to a tertiary position on the album.
A stunning disk.......2001-03-29
Clearly this version of the firebird suite deserves all the praise it has recieved over the years. A crisp performance, up to tempo, rehearsed to perfection by a tremendous orchestra. The de Falla peices are well played too, Grace Bumbry is superb in El amor brujo. These recordings forshadowed the illustrious career that Maazel was embarking on, and they're a chance to hear a young, infectously vibrant interpritation - the sort of performance that made him famous.
Get This For Falla, Not Firebird.......2000-07-21
This release in the DG Originals series combines the music from three ballets, two of Falla's and Stravinsky's "Firebird Suite." Quite frankly, there isn't much similar about the music other than the conductor/orchestra in these particular performances (Maazel/Berlin RSO), and the fact that one of the Falla's ballets and "Firebird" were both written in 1919. Despite this the music is all wonderful. Jazz fans will recognize one of the excerpts from "El Amor Brujo" as "Will O' The Wisp," borrowed for the Miles Davis/Gil Evans collaboration "Sketches of Spain." Of course, Miles' version comes without the vocal talents of the lovely mezzosoprano Grace Bumbry. Since I was mostly familiar to this point with Falla transcripitons for guitar, these orchestral works are quite inspiring. The "Firebird" was recorded by conductor Maazel when he was only 27, and it apparently catapulted him to stardom. However, for my money I find Leonard Bernstein's and Ernset Ansermet's Firebirds to be more compelling. Bernstein in particular slows the tempo down to draw out certain parts of the finale, while Maazel keeps the pace up and embellisehes things with some bells (literally) and whistles that are unnecessary. If you are looking for this CD to be your definitive "Firebird Suite" recording, you've come to the wrong place in my opinion. If you want some terrific Falla recordings with "Firebird" thrown in as a bonus, get this while you can.
