A milestone in christian hip-hop.......2007-07-09
Manchild and Dust created what is still their greatest album in this highly entertaining debut. With more of a Gangstarr-like sound, Mars ILL really delivered a true banger on this one. Dust does well on the turntables while Manchild blesses the mic with top-notch lyricism [And is some of the best lyrics ever heard in christian rap history]. It's a wonder these guys never landed on the source's off the radar column! Manchild has an amazing range of depth and substance to his lyrics and he lets you know Jesus is the way without resorting to shoving it down your face on every single song. This is what hip-hop is supposed to be, Tight beats and tight rhymes. Manchild also raps with Deepspace5 [The members of that group appear here as well throughout]. The best songs are ''Try Again'', ''Monotone'', ''Love Is'', ''The Sphere Of Hip-Hop'' [Both versions], and ''Black Market''. While the duo isn't as biblically sound as say a Cross Movement or a Sean Slaughter, Mars ILL really shows the hip-hop world that tight rhymes and beats don't discriminate against God's people. This is an underground masterpiece. If you like Gangstarr, You should have no problems getting into Mars ILL, Unless you're turned off by the fact that they're christians. You should also enjoy the deep underground East Coast style their music contains. Mars ILL so far have not been able to make an album that was as good as this one. Hope the review helped. Be blessed.
the real deal.......2006-06-27
everything that has every come from Mars Ill has been amazing, including this first, nationally distributed album. These guys are true heroes of the underground scene, too, unlike these mega stars who have to have gimmicky stories and actions to build up some false credentials.
I can't say enough about this band and this album, the music speaks for itself. Check it out. My personal favorite on this album is Sphere of Hip Hop.
Hard to deny . . ........2006-02-21
Long before there was an Eminem, or however you spell his name, Mars Ill was droppin the word of God through the vehicle of Holy Hip Hop and helping us to experience the goodness of God through His creation. Thankfully, the Christian community is blessed to have a diversity of unique Caucasian artists who have made us all proud like KJ-52, John Reuben and Toby Mac. But, the gentlemen from Atlanta are doing us all a favor through the music they make and the lives they lead.
I am an African-American who started listening to rap music with the Sugar Hill Gang in Jr. High school. Upon my conversion, I was fortunate to grow spiritually from the music/ministry of groups like SFC, the Dynamic Twins, LPG, Future Shock and Grits. The fact is, God is first of all faithful, and he moves through vessels who are "willing,"and this group is yielded to Him. If you will give this album an honest listen, you will find it to be one of the most complete albums you will ever hear, top to bottom.
AWESOME.......2005-09-13
Best Christian Rap OR Secular Rap CD out in the market....a definite MUST BUY!!
Very Good.......2005-07-27
Dust and Man Child tear it up on this album and with the addition of the Deep Space 5 crew how could this be a failure? The beats are tight and the lyrics are unique and plenty of tracks to keep you bumping throughout the day.

Album Description
Originally released by RCA/Neon in 1971. The second album for UK progressive rock band whose records are now very rare & sought after. Good progressive pieces based on heavy guitars, sax riffs & keyboards with acoustic & melodic moments reminiscent of early Pink Floyd. Original artwork. Akarma. Mini LP sleeve. 2001 release.
Customer Reviews:
Great forgotten, underrated UK prog album.......2005-09-02
I bought this album cos I had heard good stuff about it but also some more negative opinions. So I didn't really know what to excpect other than it was ressembling Van der Graaf Generator a lot in sound. After having heard it 1, 2 and 5 times I was assured that this was a lasting and highly qualified brittish progressive rock album. It strikes me every time I dig deeper in the UK 70's prog scene that the UK had so many, many bands in the early to mid 70's that made interesting and great prog rock. Spring, Gnidrolog, Cressida, England and so forth (to mention some of the less well-known). But back to this album, "Ice queen" really opens in strong fashion with the sax/guitar riff and goes through many great themes. "Empty houses" has some great almost psychedelic solos in it. "Insolent lady" goes through many powerful timesignatures and is one of the best tracks here. "Miracle worker" and "Religion" are also more than ok but maybe a bit too repetitious in contrast to the other suite-like songs. Thus the grade doesn't attain the full 5 star review. "Sun god" is a mellow track that is in places almost spiritual in its charachter. Leaning towards prog folk-rock but also with the usual contrast from soft to heavy passages. The album ends on a great note. And the akarma reissue has a great sound in their usual goodlooking papersleeves. Really good early brit prog from 1971.

Ignore the review above!!!!!!!!!!!.......2003-03-24
No, he is correct that the first album is not as cliched a progressive rock album as the second (don't get me wrong, I love the second album), but it still has some very fine qualities......it is harder rocking than the second, very bass heavy with little saxaphone but much stronger guitar work....just listen to the extended workout at the end of Traveller Man. Melodically it is still good and really takes you back to the London underground scene as the 60's turned into the 70's. Both Raw Material albums are great, just very different from one another....if you buy one after the other expecting more of the same then you will probably be disappointed....just go in with an open mind and enjoy!
The first effort is bad!.......2001-12-03
I have both albums of Raw Material. The second album has strong progressive structure with strange and beatiful melodies. But the first is the bad parody on progressive music. Very bad ...
