Like traditional year-end promises, Resolutions has an eye on the future. In the '80s, producer-remix master-DJ Todd Terry was an innovator, bringing a rougher sensibility to the sleek genre of house. On his latest CD, Terry imbues the contemporary dance-music styles he so heavily influenced with his distinctive touch. Unlike much of his previous work and like a lot of current dance music, Resolutions is dark and moody. Industrial tones hover, bass lines dive-bomb, drum & bass rhythms percolate. Guest rappers appear on various tracks. Spragga Benz's dancehall vocal performance on "Merderah" speeds up and slows down like a malfunctioning tape recorder, creating an eerie machine-man effect. Terry isn't an old schooler trying to keep up with the times; "The Original Todd," as one track is titled, sounds right at home among Resolutions' sci-fi soundscape. --Fred Cisterna

The producers of Mike Leigh's vibrant Topsy-Turvy took many big studio meetings seeking financing for their film. Word has it all went swimmingly until time for the pitch came--there are apparently no two words as unsettling to Hollywood film execs as "Gilbert & Sullivan." But the studio system's loss turned out to be the indie film's--and our--gain. Leigh's film brought the composers' late-19th-century mounting of their breakthrough The Mikado to an all-too-familiar life, filled with as many neuroses, foibles, and fragile egos as any modern Broadway musical. The film's score, an inviting pastiche adapted from Mikado (and other G&S staples) by veteran Carl Davis, may upset purists with its time-conscious liberties. But then, it might just win over a receptive yet unexposed new audience for whom this music may seem strangely familiar, as well it should: this is where modern musical theater began. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Here's a How-De-Do!.......2007-02-22

It's brilliant, really! I am a self-confessed Gilbert and Sullivan fanatic, and so the release of this soundtrack to accompany a truly delightful movie provided me with an "Oh, joy! Oh, rapture!" moment ... many of them, actually! To hear some of my favorite tunes from some of my favorite G & S operetti performed so well makes my heart "sing-o" - and me, too!

5 out of 5 stars Topsy-Turvy is TOPS!!!.......2007-02-21

This is Gilbert and Sullivan like you will never hear again! These performances are so fresh and alive with comedy flourish that my formerly "purist" ears reveled in delight at this magnificeant rendition of these great operettas. It is wonderful to hear excerpts from PRINCESS IDA,IOLANTHE and SORCERER (as well as THE MIKADO) when so many recordings already exist of the other G&S chestnuts,PINAFORE and PIRATES OF PENZANCE.
The actual cd itself fills the speakers and is a true listener's dream.A great soundtrack of a great film.Wonderfully recorded by SONY.

5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2005-02-25

This is a fantastic cd, one that I have listened to many many times without growing tired of it. The particularly nice thing about this cd for lovers of the movie is that you get to hear the entire performance for many songs which are necessarily cut short in the film, most enjoyably "A Wandring Minstrel I". As has been noted in other reviews, the vocal performances are not what you will typically find in other G & S recordings: they are far less burdened with mannered belle canto nonsense, to their immense benefit. And I must disagree with one reviewer who disparaged the staging as portrayed in the film. My wife and I saw a touring production of the Mikado which used the costumes and set from the movie, and it was fantastic. Even better, the performers seemed to take some cues from the film actors too, singing and performing in a way that was much more accessible and not a bit less pleasing.

4 out of 5 stars Better than many a G&S non-sountrack.......2003-09-16

I was compelled to get this after seeing the overlong, flawed, but nonetheless all-around amazing 'Topsy Turvy'. (Seriously - almost every supporting actor in the film deserved an Oscar, and Jim Broadbent was robbed; his Gilbert is magnificent and real.)
Inspired then to hear a true G&S performance, I bought several Carte recordings. What broke my heart is that the genuine Savoy performances are not as good as those of the 'Topsy' actors! Contrary to a review here, the articulation is just dandy. And the tenor in 'Wand'ring Minstrel' alone is far, far superior to the thin, reedy, annoying versions on the several concert cds I've heard. As is the riveting soprano on the beautiful 'The Sun Whose Rays...' of 'Topsy'; again, the actual Savoy recordings are merely shrill in comparison.
I remove one star only because of the necessarily abbreviated performances here.

5 out of 5 stars Put on the CD, close your eyes and..........2003-03-02

You are back in the Savoy Theater in Victorian England, watching a Gilbert and Sullivan production of the Mikado, or Yeoman of the Guard, or the Sorcerer, or Princess Ida. The qualiity of the music is superb, the voices are wonderful and I only wish I could have videos of all the G&S productions to watch along with the music.

Buy the DVD of Topsy-Turvy if you don't already own it. It's magnificent. See my other review.

5 out of 5 stars Just dandy!.......2003-10-04

My copy of this set sounds fine--a bit bright and edgy at times but nothing to write my congressperson about. I would've preferred a richer piano sound and modern digital recording, but hey, we can't have everything, especially in this sort of repertoire. These are swell performances of astonishing piano music. In unsympathetic hands, Ives (or nearly any "modern" composer) can sound like so much noodling--not so here. Ives himself enjoyed adventurous (and even incompetent!) interpretations of his music and was hardly fussy with his notation so it's tough to call any one recording of a work "definitive." A tip: look for hell-bent enthusiasm and/or profound mysticism more than any other qualities in Ives performances. You'll find them in this set, in old (and sonically imperfect) recordings like Bernstein's for CBS (now Sony) or the Stokowski performance of Symphony #4, and in the wonderful collection of Ives playing his own music. With Ives, the "critical edition" mentality or perfectionism of any type tend to miss the man's essential aesthetic and spiritual points.

5 out of 5 stars More than a bargain.......2001-07-22

I listened to this set before I looked at the review already posted here; then I went back to listen again, thinking I must have missed something. For what it's worth, I did not detect distorted recording, though there are (as often with Ives) some odd sounds coming from the piano now and then--but I think they are part of it. Mandel's performances of the big works--the two sonatas--are distinctive and powerful. I am not sure I would say he replaces John Kirkpatrick's "Concord," but he stands comfortably in that company as a fine interpreter of the work, and his Sonata #1 is possibly the best I have heard of that work. The many shorter or minor pieces are performed well, so far as I can tell. I suppose it is possible that the earlier reviewer had a defective set, or possibly my ears are just not so finely tuned. I hope, however, that the recorded sound is at least as good as it sounds to me, since I would hope that both fans and newcomers would find this a welcome addition to an Ives collection.

1 out of 5 stars 5 Star Performance, 0 Star Recording.......1999-10-12

This is an excellent performance by Alan Mandel who, throughout these 3 discs, shows an uncanny ability to bring out the melody from within even the most convoluted Ives' piece. Unfortunately, most of this recording is distorted and noisy when the playing gets loud. All of the Studies on CD 1 contain distortion well beyond any professional recording I've ever heard (the 2 sonatas don't suffer from the same fate -- they appear to be from a different session). The fact that Vox goes on about their 20-bit digital mastering on the back of the box sure looks like they are "protesting too much". This is all a real shame for Ives fans because Mandel's playing is some of the finest Ives piano performances I've ever heard, plus, here in one place at a great price, are arcane pieces well worth hearing. (It's almost worth getting for that reason, but, in the end, you're stuck with fine music that's distorted and noisy.)

5 out of 5 stars This is a good example of electonic music.......2000-10-14

Todd Terry is quite good at putting together sounds, and you will especially like listening to this CD if you are just relaxing-but this isn't some little weird backwards jazz pop CD. I mean, this is a big cheese! Some songs go together with special parts that you really like, and other songs are just plain fun to listen to. My favorite song by far is Let it Ride, and listen to the sample. I think it just plays the lady voice part-but if you listen to this whole song, you get this supercalafragilisticexpialadosis collage of sounds, vocals, and sounds. LISTEN TO THIS CD!

5 out of 5 stars Todd Terry understands electronic music.......2000-01-28

Todd Terry has been putting out heavy house tracks for awhile. When I heard this CD, without knowing who it was, I was immediately taken by the strength of the mood. Each song speaks a solid message. I could not believe it was Todd Terry. The transformation from house to this powerfully seamless hybrid of dub, jazz, reggae and industrial is remarkable. The music fulfills the sophistication for straight listening purposes, and several tracks sound like guaranteed floor fillers (thereby capitalizing on some loopiness). Every track has an edge, an uncommon feature of related genres these days. Also, the music dodges any pretense, unlike artists like Tricky.

5 out of 5 stars Despite what everybody might think..........2000-01-02

Despite what most of the reviewers might think I can't deny that this is a hell of a good album. I respect Todd and love his music. Also I have heard enough dnb albums to know that this one is good. Todd is originally a house guru, but even going to the dnb scene hasn't torn off his edges. Listening to this album you hear his view to the world. Hear the things he loves and hates. But most of all you hear the quality of his music and his exceptional ear for vocals. He has chosen the best vocals for his tracks you ever could imagine. His Blackout and Whatcha Know certainly are one of the best "normal"-dnb tracks I've heard. And you can't deny that he knows pretty much about different music styles. There's housy-dnb, jazzy-dnb, darker-dnb etc. To me the laugh [at the end of the album] says in clear words: "You don't and you can't know the true meaning of this album. Only I know." But despite not knowing the true meaning I can enjoy it.

1 out of 5 stars A fifteen dollar drink coaster.......1999-10-26

The worst CD Ive bought in awhile. I went out on a limb with this one because of how much Ive been hearing about it in mags and things. Complete garbage. "Balckout" has such a simple DnB beat its almost comical, and its probally the best track.

1 out of 5 stars if no stars were possible to give..........1999-09-15

the previous reviewer was right on the money. in short this record is awful. i really wanted to like it. i like(d) tt and was raised on his pioneering house music! + resolutions got rave reviews by the critics. this leaves me dumbfounded. i put the cd in my player with such anticipation but i could not get through any one song without fast forwarding to see if the joke was over and the real music would kick in. not one time. Everything here is cliched and boring. Everything! and his posturing is immature and so tired. with this album he has absolutly nothing to brag about. i happily gave this album away in trade for a blue room sampler (now there is some ferocious music to move you)!

Album Description

Regrets and Resolutions is a CD which takes its title from one of Gary Schocker´s compositions, extending the long line of works by composer/flutist performers - Boehm, Kuhlau, Gaubert and Taffanel among them - into later 20th-century techniques and a jazz influenced style.

This is a wonderful CD of such intense virtuosity that time and time again I put it on repeat. I am a flutist and Gary Schocker's playing inspires me every time I hear it. How does he surprise me with just about every piece he plays? It's amazing and something all flutists and musical buffs should take the time to listen and learn from. I highly recommend it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Emerging from the flood of Montreal bands, Kobayashi have proven themselves to be a cut above the rest with their groovy rhythms and hypnotic jazz melodies. Their first album (They've previously released two demos) is a brave foray into the territory of acid jazz blending elements of hip hop, trip hop, soul, funk, electronica and fusion jazz into a warm, robust package. Whether you're looking to dance the night away or hang back and chill out with some friends (With drinks aplenty of course!), you'll find something to like here.

These guys and gals set out to prove they could conquer the world, and this first album is a succesful first step in their sure to be long and arduous journey. This group deserves respect and critical acclaim. What better way to show your support than by picking this disc up?

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Even better when it's enhanced.......2005-01-10

Now if you ask me, and a lot of folks interested in disappearing musical geniuses do now and again, this here Andy Pratt fellow is a musical genius what disappeared on us. See, this feller made a big splash with the critics back in 1976 and never really caught on with the general record-buying public and never had a hit to speak of, so he kind vanish from the face of the musical scene. Shame, really. He was (and is) toe-tappin' good... 'specially with these added enhancements.

I reckon the problem might could be that Mr. Pratt writes music that is simply too insightful, too melodious, and too intelligent for the mass market. What most of them lemmings want is to plunk down their pocket change for music that is thin and empty and when a feller like this comes along who gives them, something that ain't, well then the feller finds that he is out of luck. He should have developed a cult following the like of Bruce Cockburn back in the day... one that would have given him a fan base large enough to keep an iron in the fire. Well, I guess he does still have an iron in the fire, but it is a smaller iron than it ought to be.

This here Resolution was "groundbreaking" when it came out... least that what you see slung around like so much verbal tinsel. It may have been groundbreaking, but the important issue ain't that it broke ground, but that it is a darn good album of music what stands up even now. Me and Mama had it on the CD just last night and Mama axed me , "Suguarlump," (see... Mama likes to call me 'Sugarlump' as a kind of a pet name now and again) ... she done said, "Sugarlump, we got any more of this here feller's albums to listen to because I sure enough do like this here one." Well, truth be node, we ain't. The only one we got is Resolution because all the other Andy Pratt albums I done had were LPs and they went by the wayside when our old double wide trailer burned to the ground back a few years ago. See, Junior was playing with matches in the bathroom when he was a weed of a boy, and he ended up catching the commode seat on fire (because we had us a plastic commode seat) and it ended up creating a conflagration what was big enough that we couldn't get it out. Plus that, Mama grabbed a pot of what she thought was water to throw on the fire, but it turned out to be not water but hog drippin's we had rendered down and the drippin's caught a fire and added to the conflagration and that is what did us in. Anyway, Lost all my old LPs and that is why I have turned to Amazon (dot com if you will) to rebuild my collection over the past few years. One of the first old released I sought out was this here Resolution because I like it so much and plus that
"Avenging Annie" is a right good song what should have been a radio single back in the day. I like to program my CD player to give me that one repeatedly when I am in a mood for toe tappin'.

Andy, wherever you are, you need to know the Huckabee clan is a committed fan base. We would be willin' to travel to see you live if you were to announce a comeback tour and promised to sing some of the songs on Resolution. The folks at Rolling Stone Magazine may have been a little over enthusiastic when they were raving about Resolution back in 1976 because nobody in the record buying public paid them any heed, but you ought to be proud of the record you came out with. It is a masterpiece of popular music.

I'd suggest anybody in their right minds (and most people who might be a little out of their minds too) go ahead on and get this one because it will make you sit down and listen to what Pratt had to say... and what he had to say was calming, interesting, and lively.
