Thanks to his much-publicized personal travails, it's easy to overlook the multiple talents that originally made Crosby a star in his days with The Byrds and Crosby, Stills and Nash. This, his first solo effort, was recorded in 1971 (following Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's Deja Vu) and contains some of his most impressive vocal and songwriting work, including the haunting "Laughing," the mantra-like "Music Is Love," and the extended, impressionistic "Cowboy Movie." With guest appearances by such famous friends as Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Grace Slick, and Jerry Garcia, it's a fascinating chapter in an always-interesting career that's all too often been overshadowed by headlines. --Scott Schinder

this is one of the classics from the early 70s

5 out of 5 stars Dave's best?.......2007-04-16

I don't know if this is Crosby's best work. It seems like it to me. I love poetry and I too am a musician. I can't think of any poetry, or music to date that takes me any further out of this world than this jewel of artistry. It's exquisite. I don't believe I was mistaken.

5 out of 5 stars Longevity.......2007-03-14

One intriguing aspect of music ( and cinema also ) is how some become old ( meaning the perception ) and some , don't. This collection , originally an LP and now , remastered as a CD, was recorded in 1971, 36 years ago!! and my son ( 27 old ) immediately like it. I'm suspect to say anything because I'm 52 and anyone could say that I am an old nostalgic guy, but its ( or his - Crosby ) atmosphere - chords, instrumental, vocal harmony(using playback to produce complexes vocal chords ),lyrics, are completely contemporary, or better, ageless.God blessing and long life for David Crosby.

5 out of 5 stars The Best .......2007-03-11

to come out of Crosby , a forgotten masterpiece that is comming back as a result of Voyage ( Essential Buried Treasures ) , an interesting listen of a very talented musician of my generation ... Love sailing anyway ...

5 out of 5 stars this Lp stomps almost all CSNY solos.......2007-02-08

I believe this LP ranks with the best N. Young and Stills solos and it should! After all, guest musicians include members of: the dead, the Jefferson airplane, , Quicksilver messenger service and other artists like J. Mitchell, N. Young etc. it may have the record for guest significant/major recording artists on one solo LP.

Simply put this LP represents many "firsts" beside DC's "first" LP. This may be the "first" LP that N. Young contributed a song that can only be found here, I know of no other LP with as many major sanfransico/haight ashbury groups on one lp. This is the only LP on which you can find these songs. I don't know why they're not included in the box set, instead they include many CSN and CSN&Y songs...probably in order to sell it, which brings up another strange thing about this LP, the critics hated it. THANK GOD almighty I didn't read the reviews or I may never have bought this LP!!!! That was back when I didn't know better. I equate music critics on par with weather men and stock brokers - professions seemingly incapable of doing their jobs accurately no matter how much help they have!!!!

Back to the music. I believe the quality in writing and playing place this LP beyond any solo CSN&Y LP and elevate it to equal any CSN and CSN&Y LP except deja vu. The only detraction I make when I place it par with these LP's is that it had no "hits" which we find abound on CSN and CSN&Y LP's.

bottom line: if you like CSN and CSN&Y you will love this!!!!!!

A companion to the fabulous PBS series, the 21-song, 77-minute The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" provides about as good a single-disc compilation as anyone could hope for. (There's also a five-CD version.) What sets it apart from so many other "best of Broadway" collections is its breadth--because it had access to a variety of record-label vaults it doesn't have to try to disguise gaps by using revivals or solo recordings. Here you get all the authentic stuff, including: Paul Robeson singing "Ol' Man River" from the first modern American musical, Show Boat; Ethel Merman singing "You're the Top"; the title song from Oklahoma!; Julie Andrews singing "I Could Have Danced All Night" from My Fair Lady; West Side Story's "America"; Betty Buckley singing "Memory" from Cats; Hairspray's "Good Morning Baltimore"; and "Defying Gravity" from Wicked, the newest show discussed in the PBS series. And it's hard to argue with the songwriters represented: Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Frank Loesser, Lerner and Loewe, Leonard Bernstein, Bock and Harnick, Kander and Ebb, Stephen Sondheim, and Andrew Lloyd Webber, among others. Obviously, no single-disc compilation could ever please everyone (did we really need two ALW songs?), but as a sampler intended for people who watched the series and want to hear more of the Great White Way, The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" can't be topped. --David Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars Some interesting choices, indeed.......2006-03-02

This is a pretty good compilation, but I have to wonder at some of the choices that went into it.
"Good Morning Baltimore" is almost the least impressive song from Hairspray. "You Can't Stop the Beat" was a much more anthemic song from that show.
I agree that it's too bad Les Mis didn't make it in. I would have traded that for anything Sondheim, although that's a personal preference :) .
Still, the opportunity to hear the original performers and orchestras perform these works, all in one place, is a great deal.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2005-11-01

This one plays in the car, on the ipod and in the house. When the kids were little they would ask if we could take them to "The Street". That is what they called Broadway (little did they know at that time how famous that street is). They still love it and we can not get enough of it. This CD covers the best and makes you want to go and see a live performance. You can not beat that.

4 out of 5 stars Great selections, but bad transfers.......2005-07-27

This is a great taste of broadway. If you enjoyed the B'Way series at all, then you will probably enjoy this CD. My problem with it is that some of the songs sound like they were not remastered at all- the transfer to CD is terrible. The orchestrations in "You're the top" by Ethel Merman are muffled, and the song sounds like it was taken straight from an old record and slapped onto the CD without fixing it up. It doesn't sound very clear, which is a bit upsetting and annoying. Maybe this is just because that particular recording is older than some of the songs chosen to be on this CD. The more modern songs sound crisp and new and beautiful. "Swanee" is also very low quality as if it were just taken off of a record and put on the CD without any restoration. I just feel that these songs deserved better treatment and that we as customers deserve better treatment. Decca could have restored these songs and made them sound really good, but they decided just to slap them on the CD without touching them up.

I am surprised that nothing was chosen to be on this recording from Les Miserables since it had been on Broadway for 16 years and its tour is running until 2006. There were selections from Cats, Phantom of the Opera and Wicked, so I am not sure why nothing was chosen from Les Miserables.

Other than these few nit pickings, I think that this is a great introduction to musicals. It gives a little taste across the spectrum. Try getting the cast recordings of the songs that you really like on this collection. It's worth buying if you're a huge broadway fan.

5 out of 5 stars Yes this is Some of the Best of Broadway!.......2005-04-08

This CD from Decca Broadway is a wonderful selection of some of

the "Greatest Hits" of the Broadway stage. Decca and Sony have

done an excellent job of remastering the various recordings, some

of which still show some of their age, but come across quite

well. Are there a lot of songs that I would have put on this

disc? Yes, but the ones on here are good choices. I may have to

get a copy of the Five disc set and the DVD's just to see if any

more of my favorites made it on the list. What this disc seems to

try to do is show the evolution of the Broadway song from it's

early days to the present. It succeeds quite well I think.

If you enjoy Broadway theater this CD is a must!

5 out of 5 stars The music of Broadway comes alive.......2004-10-07

I loved listening to this CD. The music from Broadway's best loved musicals are on this album. I recogized most of these songs, even though I've only seen a few of them on the local stage. I have so many favorites on this CD. It is hard to pick one. I'm a big fan of Barbara Streisand. I loved her performance of People from Funny Girl. Memory is the hit song from the musical Cats. Betty Buckley's performance of this song is so emotional and sincere.

I loved the song Annie. It is a wonderfully optimistic song performed by the original Annie Andrea McArdle. Another highlight for me is the song One performed by the cast of a Chorus Line. Luck Be A Lady Tonight is another of my favorite broadway songs on this CD from Guys and Dolls. The music of the night is a beautiful song by Michael Crawford from Phantom of the Opera. Richard Kiley has such a strong and powerful voice. He sounds so inspirational singing The Impossible Dream from Man from La Mancha. My dream is to see some musicals on Broadway someday and listen to these songs performed live.

I'm surprised that there isn't any music from Miss Saigon or Jesus Christ Superstar included here. I think they are classic musicals with great songs Maybe they will appear on a future compilation from PBS.

5 out of 5 stars If I Could Turn Back Time.......2007-01-11

I originally was buying this CD for a friend of mine as a Christmas present. Then I decided to order one for me also. We both like Cher. We were neither one disappointed. Cher is one of a kind.

5 out of 5 stars CHER IS DEFINITELY ONE OF THE GREATEST FEMALE ENTERTAINERS AND ICON'S IN ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY!.......2006-12-30

I will be writing a review on the legendary brilliant masterpiece compilation album entitled "IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME, CHER'S GREATEST HITS" by one of the greatest female performers of ALL-TIME, I talking about the legendary and ALWAYS beautiful, CHER! This compilation was originally released in 1999 on CD on the Geffen Records label distributed by Universal Music & Video Distribution Inc. The matrix or ID number is INTD-90379. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.

WOW! What can I say about this legendary compilation album and the legendary icon that recorded them all those years ago that hasn't already been said? I have mentioned and reviewed many of the great female performers in Rock n' Roll history but I must apologize deeply for not mentioning this beautiful entertainer and icon. She was born Cherilyn Sarkisian La Piere on 20 May 1946! When she met Salatore Phillip Bono (AKA Sonny Bono) in the early 60's who was 11 years older than her, BOTH their lives would be changed forever and would NEVER be the same again! Their show biz names would be changed to Sonny and Cher! And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY!" It wasn't until the early 70's that Sonny realized the full talent and potential of Cher and did not want to hold her back! Her voice sounded so rough and husky yet so beautiful! It would also be during the early 70's that Cher would begin on what would become an extremely successful solo career. When Cher's divorce from Sonny finalized in the early to mid 70's, it would be time for Cher to devote herself full time into her solo career! It would also be during this time that CHER would beautifully blossom into one of the GREATEST FEMALE PERFORMERS OF ALL-TIME! CHER would also blossom into one of the GREATEST FEMALE ACTRESSES OF ALL-TIME! This compilation album is a true testament of the many great contributions and achievements that CHER has given us! THIS IS CHER AT HER ABSOLUTE BEST! THIS LEGENDARY COMPILATION ALBUM IS HER STORY! In my opinion, This is ONE GREAT COMPILATION ALBUM! Every single song track is outstanding!

I will list and briefly review all the song tracks in their original exact running order as follows: (1.) "Love And Understanding," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! A great CHER ROCKER! I love the orchestra arrangements in this one! I love this song!) (2.) "Save Up All Your Tears," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another great CHER ROCKER! CHER sings this song with such power and emotion that you can almost feel her tears in this one! You have to see the video on this song to believe it! I love this song!) (3.) "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another great CHER song! This song is a remake from the past! I love this version!) (4.) "After All," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! I LOVE THIS SONG! A BEAUTIFUL DUET with Chicago's Peter Cetera! This is the title song from the film "CHANCES ARE!") (5.) "If I Could Turn Back Time," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Breathtaking! ANOTHER GREAT CHER ROCKER! This song kicks a*s! You need to see the video of this song to get the full impact and message that this song contains! CHER REALLY ROCKS OUT IN THIS ONE! This song is by far, ONE OF HER GREATEST EVER!) (6.) "Just Like Jesse James," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! A great CHER slow Rocker! I love the acoustic guitar arrangements in this one! Great song!) (7.) "Heart Of Stone (Remix)," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another great CHER slow acoustic song! CHER'S angelic voice brings this song to LIFE! I love it!) (8.) "I Found Someone," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another great CHER Rocker! CHER REALLY SINGS AND KICKS A*S IN THIS ONE! I love this song dearly!) (9.) "We All Sleep Alone," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! A beautiful slow CHER number! Listening to this song, you can't help but feel immersed into her spell and be hypnotized by her angelic voice! I love it!) (10.) "Bang Bang (New Version)," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! I LOVE THIS NEW VERSION! This song REALLY ROCKS! I love the musical arrangements in this one as well! This song kicks a*s! CHER sings this one with such raw power and emotion that she leaves you begging for more!) (11.) "Take Me Home," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another great CHER number! This song was recorded during the glory days of Disco! In my opinion, CHER'S voice was made for this song and sound! I love this one dearly!) (12.) "Dark Lady," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! This song is by far, ANOTHER ONE OF CHER'S GREATEST EVER! I love CHER'S blistering Lead Vocals in this one! This song is about the mystic life of a gypsy! I LOVE THIS ONE!) (13.) "Half-Breed," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another great CHER number! This song is ANOTHER ONE OF CHER'S GREATEST EVER! I LOVE THIS ONE! I love the musical arrangements in this one as well!) (14.) "The Way Of Love," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! I LOVE THIS NUMBER! I love the orchestra music arrangements in this one! CHER'S beautiful angelic voice rises for the occasion in this one!) (15.) "Gypsys, Tramps And Thieves" (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Breathtaking! Another great CHER Rocker! I love the musical arrangements in this song as well! This song is without a doubt, ONE OF CHER'S GREATEST SONGS EVER! I love it!) and (16.) "I Got You Babe (Sonny & Cher)." (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! This collection would not be complete without CHER'S TRADEMARK SONG WITH THE MAN THAT DISCOVERED HER, Sonny Bono! I love this song so dearly! You can actually feel their love for each other in this legendary song!) Two songs deserve to be honorably mentioned and added to this collection, "Believe" and "Strong Enough" from 1998. These two songs also define why CHER is one of the greatest female performers and entertainers of ALL-TIME! Overall, this is one hell of a great compilation album! Every single song track in this compilation album is nothing less than outstanding and brilliant!

As you can see, this is definitely a great treasure album worth purchasing that he or she should definitely own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This priceless gem will definitely be around to be enjoyed and cherished for many more years to come, NOW AND FOREVER!

In closing, The Legend of CHER has continued to grow and entertain us to this very day! What I will ALWAYS REMEMBER about Sonny and Cher is their charisma! They were BOTH very EXTREMELY charismatic individuals! Nothing would be more evident then Sonny and Cher's last public appearance and brief historic reunion on The David Letterman Show in the late 80's! For one last time and for a brief moment, they were Sonny and Cher once again! Believe it or not, I actually cried when I saw that performance! It was great seeing them sing "I Got You Babe," the song that gave Sonny and Cher their existence and had so much power and meaning for them both! Sadly, We would all lose Sonny Bono in a fatal sking accident on 5 January 1998 in the Reno, Nevada mountains! Cher's Eulogy speech at his funeral pretty much says it all! At the same time, CHER would release her RETURN album (I NEVER USE COMEBACK IN REFERENCE TO HER!) "BELIEVE" in 1998! This album singlehandedly made CHER a force to be reckened with in the 90's and that she is here to stay! I will always love CHER! Here's to you CHER! Keep persevering! R.I.P. Sonny Bono 1935-1998. Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. CHER RULES! SONNY BONO LIVES! Long Live Rock n' Roll! Rock out always and take care. Forever in Rock, J.L.

The song listing is missing song #1 on the CD. It is called "DON'T COME CRYIN' TO ME", and this is the only CD you can get it on. I attempted to get the song list for this CD corrected thru Amazon, but there is no avenue to have this done. Modern technology for you!!

5 out of 5 stars Cher's great.......2006-08-14

This is what I turn on all the way to work and on the way home. Great music!!!

4 out of 5 stars YOUR FAIR CHER.......2005-10-18

If anyone ever needed a collection spanning all phases of her long career, it has to be the Dark Lady herself, who's made more "comebacks" than Shirley MacLaine...and Cher's are actually "on record". Hear the husky voiced quick-change artist in her role as: Sonny's Queen ("I Got You Babe", natch), Tall Tale Telling Queen ("Half Breed", "Dark Lady", the untouchable "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves"), Disco Queen ("Take Me Home"), and Late 80's Comeback Queen ("Just Like Jesse James", the aptly titled "If I Could Turn Back Time"). Thankfully omitted are Cher's Rock Queen phase (Oh?...Missed that one?) and Electro-Dance Queen phase (Next time, leave the synthesized vocals and canned backbeat to Britney; you're above it, darling). It woulda been nice if a few more "Sonny and..." chestnuts had been favored over such dreck as a Bon Jovi-assisted remake of her own "Bang Bang", and lyrics should have been included (ever notice Cher's mumbly-mouthed delivery is just a tad hard to understand sometimes?). But heck, it just wouldn't be Cher if she didn't need a little "overhauling". Now HERE'S an idea! How 'bout the WORST of Cher, featuring her duets with Gregg Allman and Meat Loaf, her early "I Love You Ringo" single, recorded as Bonnie Jo Mason, her work as leader of rock act Black Rose...PLEASE!! Somebody STOP me before I mention her post-"Believe" rehashes!!!

Album Description

Deluxe 2-disc CD/DVD reissue of the classic 1971 solo debut album from two-time Rock and roll Hall of Famer David Crosby.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ecstatic.......2007-07-03

This is one of the finest albums of the late sixties early seventies. The remastering is beautiful, the DVD sound amazing. When the engineer had Crosby in the studio about the time that the Dead's American Beauty was being recorded, he ran the recording tapes a double speed. You can hear with a clarity unparalleled for the time.

The band includes so many of the best (look up PERRO, the Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra). The songs are meditations. "What Are their Names" is one of the most powerful antiwar songs ever written. The vocals and instrumentals are flawless, mellow, strong. Crosby is to be revered, for this gem alone.

You will not regret.

4 out of 5 stars Great Album, disappointing package.......2007-04-07

This is a 5 star recording, but with several caveats. I agree with Adam Janson's review- I also know there is additional music around. It's not hard to go on line and search for a bootleg called "Everybody Here Can Be In The Band." It has some earlier mixes of songs, and additional jams as well as other songs that didn't make the album. There is another live bootleg of Crosby and various Dead members called "David And The Dorks" which was a live concert from December 1970. Why wasn't any of this material used?
Also disappointing is the short picture gallery, which doesn't include all the original pictures from the original record sleeve. And, although a video is listed, there is none.
What a sad way to disappoint those of us who consider this to be one of the greatest albums ever released.
Buyer- beware. You're getting less than you deserve, especially at this high price.

5 out of 5 stars Crosby's masterpiece, with a little help from his friends.......2007-03-07

"I wonder who they are
The men who REALLY run this land?
And I wonder why they run it
With such a thoughtless hand.
What are their names
And on what streets do they live?

I'd like to RUN right over.
and give them a piece of my mind

Still true, 40 years later, huh?

Crosby combines the services of parts of The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Neil Young (see above), Joni Mitchell and others. Everybody sings and plays. Hippies who loved harmony. Great harmonies that float around the room like organ chords flying in Grace Cathedral. Very San Francisco Haight-Ashbury. In the late 60's these groups often gave free concerts, just set up amps in Golden Gate Park and played. There was none of the competition that would come later, music was communal! People report getting a contact-high just from listening.

Particularly wonderful I have always thought, is "Orleans", the laid-back "Mt Tamalpais High", the Title track and Neil Young's song quoted above, is just as true today as in 1969. I like all but the edgy "Cowboy Movie' but don't let that keep you from buying this masterpiece. Jerry Garcia, new to the pedal steel guitar, experimented and took risks a seasoned professional wouldn't do and they all succeed marvelously!

Crosby is at the heights of his powers before drugs and coke would ruin his life.

The new CD version is much better sounding than the murky older one, but is a tad bright in places. The LP still has the best sound.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing album, somewhat disappointing reissue.......2007-03-03

David Crosby's "If I Could Only Remember My Name" is an excellent, five star album featuring a number of wonderful guests. It is superb and deserves much more recognition that it gets. You can read the other reviews here or on the page of the original album release to hear more about that. What I'm not happy about is getting only ONE bonus track with the remaster. I've heard over a complete CD of different versions and different songs out there from these sessions. Why not release a 2 CD Legacy Edition with that material? They surely have access to it. This is a disappointing move by the label and I can only assume was done so as to not impede sales of the David Crosby box set "Voyage" released at the same time (which is excellent, by the way). When will we see these extra tracks officially released?

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece Of Sustained Mood.......2007-02-26

Very few albums start out flawless and continue to build on that brilliance until the last note sounds. "If I Could Only..." is so stunning and enveloping in it's vision and direction it sounds like it could been recorded over the course of one long, lazy night with the tape machines just left running. "Cowboy Movie" is both frightening and engrossing with Crosby's vocal gradually surging with agitation, fear and defiance while the Grateful Dead and co. chug along behind him riding an insistent riff off into the sunset. "Laughing" featuring some of Jerry Garcia's finest steel guitar is so great it makes me weep every time I hear it. This is the album as art, not a collection of singles or half-finished ideas, but a cohesive, full bodied work that stunningly shows the power of the first and finest instrument; the voice. PERFECT.

The original 1978 Broadway cast recording of Stephen Schwartz's Working has long been awaited on CD, and this great-sounding 2001 release proves it was worth the wait. Surely one of the more unlikely sources for a musical was Studs Terkel's 1972 book that compiled interviews of American working people discussing their jobs and what they liked and disliked about them. Schwartz transformed these interviews into a series of songs written by himself, Craig Carnelia, Mary Rodgers and Susan Birkenhead, Micki Grant, and pop singer James Taylor, and accordingly the variety of songs is as great as the variety of the workers featured. There's the lyric beauty of "The Mason," the rueful "Just a Housewife," the retiree's wry "Joe," the waitress's lilting "It's an Art," Taylor's pop-country "Brother Trucker," and the powerful emotion of "Fathers and Sons," realized by a compelling cast that features David Patrick Kelly, Joe Mantegna, Bob Gunton, and Lynne Thigpen, among others.

Six bonus tracks include a new version of the grocery checker song written for the 1999 L.A. Theatreworks production, Carnelia and Grant performing their own songs (unfortunately, Grant's track comes from a poor-quality audio source), and Schwartz's moving performance of "Fathers and Sons" from 1999's The Stephen Schwartz Album. Also welcome are 2001 notes from Schwartz paired with 1978 notes from Terkel, and a detailed listing of the composers and performers of each song. Working was filmed for American Playhouse in 1982. --David Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars An underrated musical.......2006-03-16

This musical seems to be very underrated, because it isn't done in a traditional style. There is no set storyline or characters. It is essentially a grouping of songs about different people and the work they do in their lives. Some of the songs are very powerful, like "Millworker", and some are just fun, like "Lovin' Al". Some songs date the recording, as songs like "Brother Trucker", while good, have a bit of a synthesized 70's feel. The majority of the songs are more traditional.

I saw this show done by my high school years ago, so maybe it holds a bit of nostalgia for me, but it is definitely worth checking out.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Lesser Known Gem.......2005-12-26

I have never seen Working, but would love to, and I would love to perform it so as to revive interest in it. I found out about this recording from an online site, and I fell in love with it. It's a very modern style musical although from 1978. Were it on Broadway today, it would still be revelent to today's working class. My favorite number probably has to be "It's An Art", just because of its sheer fun. I could listen to that song all day and never get bored with it. I do, however, find "Brother Trucker" to be a bit tiring, and "Neat To Be A Newsboy" is just plain old, outdated, and ANNOYING! Other than that, wonderful ablum for an almost forgetten show.

5 out of 5 stars Keep Working!!!.......2004-06-12

I had the privilege of seeing a production of this wonderful musical at L.A. Valley College in May 2004. I quickly fell in love with the songs and the entire premise of the musical. Now, with this CD, I can finally sing along to all the brilliant songs over and over again, belting them out like there is no tomorrow.

What makes Working so special is that anyone can relate to the lyrics, they are powerful, beautiful, touching, and extremely real. Anyone who has ever worked a day in their life will feel the lyrics hit close to home. Whether you're a housewife, a valet parker, a fireman, a millworker, a teacher, a cleaning woman, or even a hooker, this musical has a place for you, no matter what job you do.The emotion, sincerity, and love expressed in the songs are amazing, and they are all extremely unique and a pure joy to listen to.

All the songs are fantastic but the stand-outs have to be "All the Live Long Day," "Just a Housewife," "If I Could've Been," "It's An Art," "Father's and Sons," "Cleaning Women," and "Something to Point to." I also have a soft spot for "Brother Trucker" and "I'm Just Movin" from the 1999 revival, which I am so grateful is included in this CD. This is a terrific, feel-great album everyone should listen to. Give Working a chance, it's worth it.

4 out of 5 stars a good, if obscure CD.......2003-09-26

i admit that this is an obscure musical, but nevertheless i found myself in a production of WORKING as Grace, the millworker. upon listening to the cd, i found that each song characterized the character well. the newsboy song is NOT annoying and my favourite songs are "its an art", "cleaning women", "if i could've been" and "lovin al". I would only recommend this CD for a real musical theatre afficionado, as those who don't appreciate the beauty of a musical won't understand these songs.

5 out of 5 stars off the beaten path.......2003-07-10

I had never heard of this show until I stage managed a musical revue that included "If I Could've Been." That song grew on me, and I finally had to check out the rest of the soundtrack. All of the music on this CD is fantastic, and the lyrics feel sincere, creating beautiful moments for each character. Stephen Schwartz's best decision with this show was collaborating, allowing different composers to bring their own talents and specialties to the music, thus making it more real and less "Broadway." My only criticism is that the liner notes are slim.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Modest in both scale and sound, If I Could Tell You represents a less elaborate, more back-to-basics approach to music for an artist lately accustomed to staging Grand Statements (see Tribute). A straightforward, keyboard-based studio recording with minimal accompaniment, If I Could Tell You finds Yanni exploring a pleasant though largely unexceptional middle ground--less overtly romantic than his early '90s bestsellers In My Time and Dare to Dream, nor as boldly expressive as his rousing early releases. "On Sacred Ground" opens the disc with a choir of electronically treated voices chanting ethereally over gentle rhythms and Native American flute, followed by the flamenco-tinged minor drama of "The Flame Within." Yanni's most interesting ideas arrive at mid-disc, starting with the harmonic tribal chanting on the rhythmic "Wishing Well," followed by a pair of agreeable romantic and dramatic forays on piano and keyboards ("A Walk in the Rain," "Highland"). Yet compared to Yanni at his expressive best, these selections and others that follow convey a surprising neutrality. Not that this music is objectionable. The stately romantic piano found on "In Your Eyes," for example, is graceful and appealing. Overall, though, the mood here is tame, reserved--and here's that word again--modest. After a three-year wait following the globe-girdling Tribute, this approach is a bit of a surprise. --Terry Wood

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST YANNI CD!.......2007-01-23

If I could I would rate this CD higher than 5 stars! This is the best Yanni CD ever! In this album Yanni takes a different turn and changes the flavor of his music. The songs are very spiritual and exotic. The listener is transported to a different world. I love all his music, but if I were to choose my favorite CD, it would definitely be this one. This is a must CD for any Yanni fan!

3 out of 5 stars Lackluster.......2006-03-30

This album is good. Although I really cannot understand the comments of people saying Yanni is the greatest of all time. I have to wonder about their musical diversity. He is a great musician...yes. But c'mon folks. This album truly sounds like a rehash of many of his other albums (which were all very good but getting worn), dontcha think? I am glad people like this material and that they see something different in it, but in many other genre's this would be considered a yawn and an abomination. Imagine the same lyrics and same melody lines in every song practically>

That is what I hear of Yanni. Listening for more than a decade, I know everytime I pick up his albums I will hear the same ol, same ol. At the same time, maybe that's a good thing. People hate when bands change their style...

But I guess I am not getting the diversity from this album I would like. Yanni is a talented guy...I just have more emotions in me than the ratio he depicts on this album and the last bunch.

5 out of 5 stars Yanni Hits One Out Of The Ball Park With Cut #1 (But Only #1).......2006-03-02

When Yanni is good, he's very, very good. When he's bad...well...
However, the first cut of this CD On Sacred Ground is worth buying the whole dang CD. One of the most beautiful pieces of music I have EVER heard! I must have listned to that piece, like, a thousand times! Still listening to it. Can't get this gorgeous piece out of my head, but I don't want to.

Can't say the same for his other compositions. Rather John Tesh-y in that Yanni takes the same beat/tune and beats it to death over and over. Didn't care for the rest of the Cd, but first cut pays its price

5 out of 5 stars Sublime.......2006-01-17

A choir of electronically treated voices chanting ethereally over gentle rhythms and Native American flute, followed by the flamenco-tinged minor drama of "The Flame Within." is an impressive way to start this CD, Yanni's best work ever I think. This work is a total triumph, an intense work that exemplifies Yanni's ability to soar musically and spiritually. As a writer of fiction, I love to use his music as background music as I work. It helps my creativity. It's also great music to take along on a walk with a Nano.

God Bless You Yanni.....

John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Oh Julie, the songs you sang on this CD are superb. I wish you could still give us that joy. If you can only sing in the low registers, give us jazz!! You can do it I just know you can!!

2 out of 5 stars Pretty Sad, .......2005-10-27

Hollywood veteran Julie Andrews has had a glorious career, but not without its downsides. Her legend is built on "The Sound of Music" and "Mary Poppins" and other glorious roles. Her abilities as a singer were never impressive or great, her voice often sounded weak, but she always knew how to sing around her very limited vocal range. On this collection she performs some of the greatest Broadway tunes ever written and even though she does a good job, her voice just doesn't hold up against many of these tunes. Her warmth is felt all over the album, in "Here I'll Stay" she wraps her gentle, but narrow, voice around it and in "My Funny Valentine" she sticks to the lower register of her voice. However, in the re-recording of her classic "Sound of Music" and in "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever" her voice fails her, it often sounds thin and airy and it's actually quite sad to listen to. When all is said and done Julie Andrews remains a great talent, and most of that talent is largely due to her amazing capability as a performer and her genuine warmth.

5 out of 5 stars I FELL IN LOVE WITH JULIE ALL OVER AGAIN.......2005-06-25

As a young kid growing up in the Philippines I remember my Dad playing his state-of-the-art Aiwa tape recorder back in the 60s and hearing Julie Andrews' voice - truly the voice of an angel! Now, hearing these songs again with adult ears I fell in love with her voice all over again !

5 out of 5 stars A Great Julie Andrews CD.......2002-01-27

If you are a fan of Dame Julie's and musicals, this is the cd for you. It is a compilation of songs from prevously released albums; The King and I, The Music of Richard Rodgers, Here I'll Stay, and Victor/Victoria, Original Broadway Cast Recording.
I found the material to be very well put together giving the listener selections from My Fair Lady, Camelot, The Sound of Music, Victor/Victoria and others. What more could you want?
As for Ms. Andrews, she is superb. There is simply no one like her. I have heard comments that prior to the infamous throat surgery she was unable to handle the difficult material and hit those high notes. This is just not true. All you have to do is listen to these songs recorded in the early 90's to know that she still had a marvelous voice. Lets hope that one day she will be able to sing and record again. If not, these may be her last recordings so treasure them.

The My Fair Lady suite is wonderful and Ms. Andrews definitely hit the high note at the end of "I Could Have Danced All Night".
Her version of "Edelweiss" and "The Sound of Music" are lovely.
Also worth listening to is "Living in the Shadows" written for the Broadway production of Victor/Victoria so you won't find it on the movie soundtrack. The lyrics are by Leslie Bricusse who also penned "Crazy World", which is another great selection on this cd.

Overall this is a cd worth having in your collection, so buy it today. Otherwise you are missing out.

5 out of 5 stars Climbing Every Mountain with Mary Poppins.......2002-01-22

Julie Andrews and her music have been an inspiration to me
every since I stepped into a theater and watched Mary Poppins
(many years ago). I admire her talent and her voice on this CD. I know it is not as clear a voice as she used to have but I still enjoy listening to her. I listen to this CD when I want a "pick me up" and am proud to have it as part of my collection.
