    2 out of 5 stars This One's No Good.......2003-08-31

Not much to say, really. "Out of There" is a fantastic album, and if you are looking for something from Departure Lounge and have nothing, get that one for sure. But this one has no good songs, no progession, nothing of interest. What I think happened was the following: Kid Loco and Departure Lounge teamed up for some mutual assistance. Departure Lounge got the bum end of the stick, while Kid Loco made out like a bandit. Instead of buying "Too Late to Die Young", you should get Kid Loco's "Kill Your Darlings" - it's a killer, and I wish Departure Lounge would have got as much out of KL as KL got out of DL. Buy "Kill Your Darlings", don't buy "Too Late to Die Young." But make sure you buy both "Out of There" (DL) and "Kill Your Darlings (KL).

3 out of 5 stars it's ok for not knowing who they are.......2002-12-16

I picked this disc up on a whim. Usually I end up getting something REALLY bad but I liked some of the tracks on "Too Late To Die Young". It's almost like they're trying too hard to be "weird" and "out there". The song I like the most for no real reason other than the tuba part is "Be Good To Yourself".

Speaking of instruments, there's a plentitude of them on this disc. If you really like that sort of thing than I do recommend this album. On the CD inserts they list: baritone guitar, theremin, frying pan,a casiotone, jazz oboe (?!) and alot fo other weird things.

This band does show some good expectations for the future.

2 out of 5 stars half an album.......2002-11-03

Only about half this album is of interest, with a lot of filler. The songwriting shows promise, but the ideas aren't well-developed, and several of the songs are allowed to go on and on, far past the point where they were interesting.

3 out of 5 stars Could Have Been Really Good!.......2002-06-12

This is the second album from Londoners Departure Lounge and along with it's debut this was one has received very positive reviews from the British music press. Having left their native London to relocate to Nashville I have expected this c.d. to sound like the sort of thing Lambchop, etc used to produce. Instead there's barely a hint of any Alt. Country sound.

The album starts off very positively. "Straight Line To The Kerb" sounds like some sort of classic Belle And Sebastian or Delgado's track. It builds up very smoothly before the acoustic guitars and gentle shimmering keyboards serve as a backdrop to almost whispered vocals. You get the added touch of some really nice trumpet and at this stage I thought I was on to a winner with this c.d. Well the first few tracks really are very good indeed but the whole c.d. deteriorates into some at times almost unlistenable dirge later on. The first hints of some of their unusual arrangements comes half way through the first single and excellent track "King Kong Frown". The cause of this seems to be some wayward sounding brass section. I mean the first sax. Interjection is excellent but we soon get this excruciating sounds of the sax later on. This sound reappears later on during the oddball sounds of track 7 "Be Good To Yourself". Some people may find this sound has some sense of orginality but to me it's that harsh sound much like someone dragging their nails down a blackboard! It gets even worse on the 9th track, which starts off excellently with a cool sort of blues vibe and rhythm, before we get that harsh sound again. On the previous track Tim Keegan is joined on vocals by Lisa O'Neill. Now what starts off as an excellent atmospheric track is ruined by her weak vocals. She tries to sound like Lisa Germano and in my opinion fails miserably. It's a bit like the last real Belle And Sebastian album when Stuart Murdoch should have just been selfish and done all the vocals himself. The sad thing is that each of these tracks has the potential to be excellent but unfortunately something small comes in to disturb your enjoyment.

It's a pretty mixed album and I seem to be just highlighting only the bad aspects. There are quite a few great moments on this c.d. They certainly show a huge variety in the instruments used-lots of brass(which is mostly good), organs, various guitar sounds and sometimes instead of using conventional drums they use handclaps really effectively. Some of the early tracks are as good as anything that was on say the first Doves c.d.. The pity is that I feel the bones of these tracks are really good and then someone, somewhere decided to over-elaborate the arrangements. Maybe if someone remixes this c.d. I'll find it far more appealing!

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2002-05-13

While this CD may not be as poppily accessible as their previous noninstrumental cds, this cd nevertheless hightlights the tightness and ability of the band to incorporate different styles and distell these styles into departure lounge songs. Seeing departure lounge live is an incredibly moving music experience, and their recorded efforts show how musically versitle this band is. It may take a few listens, but it is worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Really quite unbelievable..........2005-08-19

This was quite an unexpected treat. A friend of mine gave me this double disc cd as a gift, and I was a little afraid of it. Remixes of Billie Holliday, Nina Simone, or (*gasp*) Ella Fitzgerald? Unthinkable! How could it be? But I gave it a try anyway, and to my utter delight, found that it was a fantastic disc, and has fallen into my regular musical rotation quite tidily. The blend of newer artists, especially the tracks from Thievery Corporation and Tetris, bring the discs together quite well. It's a surprisingly solid offering that delievers very laid-back, night time grooves that weave through the transom of thought and find themselves roiling sinuously in your dreams. Perfect for a late-night rendezvous, a slow cruise through the city at 3 am, or just a quiet evening at home with a good book and a glass of wine. Not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Honky Tonkin' Roots Country At Its Best.......2000-07-19

I bought this CD on a whim. I was at Larry Joe Taylor's Chili Cook-off and Texas Music Festival and Davin had just left the stage. I missed most of his set because I was back at our campsite but the two songs I did hear were enough to get me to purchase this disc. I really didn't expect much, having never heard of him around the Texas Music scene before (my fault! ) but I was absolutely blown away by this album. There isn't a bad song on here and there are some really outstanding--unbelievably outstanding songs on this disc. It's hard to pick favorites because they are all great but "Things Ain't Like They Used To Be" and "Head Over Heels" are my two personal faves. I own about 1000 CDs and this is probably among my two or three favorite discs. 5 stars, no doubt.

5 out of 5 stars Hey Amazon - Get the TITLE right at least!.......1999-12-13

As if it's not tough enough to get the word out that there's some great alternative music coming from Texas. As if there are many singer/songwriters as gifted as Davin James with an up-hill battle to fight to maintain their own creativity and vision... but AT LEAST you'd hope that a hip on-line organization like this would get the NAME OF THE C.D. RIGHT!

Davin often appears at a little Honky Tonk near Houston, Texas after which this C.D. is named... the title of this C.D. is

    THE NO WHERE LOUNGE!

Also, Davin is one of the best, hottest, and most talented in a long list of legendary Texas guitar pickers! Nights are HOT at the No Where Lounge when Davin takes the stage... a true legend in the making...

If Amazon could only get the name of this C.D. right! Well, that's what this project was all about... Welcome to THE NO WHERE LOUNGE!

4 out of 5 stars A good selection of sexy jams..........2004-08-30

My whole reason for buying this CD was to have #15 on Disc 1. I heard Slowly, by Max Sedgley, on the TV show Las Vegas. Well, I'm glad I tracked this song down. The rest of the CD isn't nearly as good as this single, but #2 on Disc 1 comes pretty close. David Holmes' Wooden Heart is really groovy. There are a bunch of other good songs I listen to regularly but these stick out most.

If you are looking for some good low light music for hanging out with friends or someone special, this is definitely a CD worth BUYING... I stongly doubt you'll find all of these on shared networks.

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the best Late Lounge Compilation.......2003-07-03

Great CD. Out of Late Lounge's 3 compilations, this is my favorite. CD1 is great for driving in the sunshine with the top down. CD2 is great for chilling by the pool with a cocktail. Perfect weekend CD.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Double Disc.......2006-03-14

Remember the Chill-out era? That magical time between 1998-2003 where the market was completely and utterly saturated with chillout compilations? At the forefront were the Ministry of Sound series' which were incredibly canibalistic (some albums had the same songs on them, especially the 'annual' recaps) and the Ultra series. I mention these because this album is from that time period - 2002, put together by Jazzfm. If you've lived in England or been, one thing that will stand out like the previous reviewer stated will be the great music on the radio stations. A few channels have terrific programming and just... quality.

This really is a terrific set of songs. Disc one has some of the heavy-hitters of the genre, including a healthy dosage of Zero-7 who were wildly popular then. Goldfrapp and The Underwolves follow and then you've got some great keys and cool vibes from Kinobe and Nitin Sawhney. There were too cuts on this one though that stood out, and to me that was Aim's "The Force" and Minnie Riperton's classic "Inside My Love" shows her breath-taking range. However Disc-two is a bit of a let-down. Groove Armada's "At the River" kicks the disc off but then there's a bit of filler in-between; the Beth Orton cut's a head-scratcher, not one of her better tunes. Sneaker Pimp's "6 Underground" was a popular track years before and I admittedly still do love the song and was glad they provided the entire un-cut version. Other top cuts on this one were Victor Davies "Sound of the Samba", King Britt's beat laden remix to Bebel Gilberto's "August Day Song" and a downright chilling version of "Milk" done by Garbage. If you really want to hear a cool mix of that track, check out Euphoria "Chilled Out" and see how it's sandwiched between a Nitin Sawhney track and then fades into Beanfield's "Charles". But... I digress...

I liked this album and recommend it. While the price may be a bit steep, you can find it on the cheap in a few other outlets now. It's got some quality cuts and neither of the discs have cross-faded tracks, they're all stand-alone. Disc one was clearly the stronger of the two but even then the disc had some neat tunes on it. If yo uliked this, by all means check out the second edition of this series too which was IMO equally as nice and a few other JazzFM comps. Remember that this is a bit of a downtempo album from 2002, so be careful of overlapped tracks if you picked up lots of chillout compilations in that time period.

            3 out of 5 stars Nice Sampler.......2005-06-30

Back in the days before The Man came down HARD on my freeloading usage of the company T1 to listen to Internet radio, I would tune in of an evening to the Late Lounge show on JazzFM. Man...those Brits excel in at least two fields: soccer hooliganism and digging up loads of neglected chill and jazzy tunes.

You might recognize some of the artists gathered together here: Garbage (covering a Massive Attack number), Groove Armada, Dusty Springfield, Moby, Minnie Riperton, Beth Orton, and Fun Lovin' Criminals among others. A lot of tunes--this is a two-CD set.

I found the second disk to be a bit weak. Orton's contribution is not one of her strongest songs, and you can pick up Springfield's "The Look Of Love" practically anywhere. I can't tolerate Erykah Badu, and if they were gonna include the Sneaker Pimps, I wish they had gone for a deeper cut than the well-known "6 Underground".

The first disk I liked much better, particularly its second half. The late Riperton's soaring, aching "Inside My Love" alone was worth the price of admission. And the piece by Underworld was also well-done. You can skip right past Moby's offering, though.

If you've ever listened to the Late Lounge show, then this is a disk for you. If you need to get mellow, unwind, and sedately get your groove-thang on in a quasi-English way, you should pick this up. If you like hard-rockin' shrieking distorted guitars and ear-drum bursting walls of sound...uh...look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation From Late Lounge.......2004-02-12

This CD is a must for anyone familiar with London's Jazz FM's show, the Late Lounge. Weeknights from Midnight - 3AM GMT (7PM-10PM EST), Rosie Kendrick plays a great mix of chilled out tracks. You can listen to Jazz FM from anywhere in the world via their website. Definitely worth checking out.
