It has been said that Philip Glass is the `Godfather of Trance' and evidence of that is found in the remixes that a number of young producers/musicians began sending to Orange Mountain Music as early as 2002. These unsolicitated mixes became the genesis for Glasscuts, Philip Glass Remixed (release date Sept 2005). This CD presents a very diverse program without any one dominant style. The artists are Androoval from Uruguay, Robert Bell from Australia, Brian Bender from the US, Hector Castillo from Venezuela, Taylor Dupree from the US, Sebastian Escofet from Argentina, impLOG, from the US, Woody McBride DJ ESP from the US, Marcos Romero from Uruguay, Kate Simko from the US, Dietrich Schoenemann from the US, Luciano Supervielle from Uruguay and Dave Wesley from the US.

I just assumed that this would be as equally wonderful, and that Glass' music would be even more translatable into the "trance" genre, or whatever the kids are calling it nowadays.

Sadly, it seems that this was done by junior high kids with a computer and Acid Foundry or whatever that cheap software is.

No creativity, and, oddly enough, not even any real sense of Glass' music still being in the "remix".

I am a huge fan of Glass; I am not a fan of this kind of music, but since I am also a fan of Reich and since, to my total surprise, I am quite enthralled by the Reich Remixed CD, I figured I really needed to give this CD a shot.

What a waste. This is totally amateur, but without the occasional genius that some amateur can manage. Strictly, totally, and banal amateur yuckiness.

Yeah, it's fun and easy to beat up on remix albums since there are so many mediocre and terrible ones out there... but, wait: here's a great idea... let's give the pioneering, repetitive, trance-like minimalist music of Philip Glass the remix treatment... after all, Reich: Remixed was fabulous... surely the same kind of creativity can be unleashed in this project... But alas, something went terribly wrong here... these are mostly unbearably monotonous, grating, overlong, amateurish productions by remixers who don't seem to even GET (or enjoy?) Glass' music. A real missed opportunity and a huge letdown... ick...

This is just another insipid release from the Orange Mountain label, which keeps putting out anything with the Philip Glass
name on it - even if it is flagrant garbage. Several releases have been issued which about 90% have the same old songs, just performed by different people. In fact, Philip Glass has become more banal and bovine in the last few years because he knows anything with his name on it will sell to the trendy modernistic music crowd. Overall, I believe it is time to stop
recycling Glass.

This music should be categorized under the "popular music" category, not "classical". All the pieces have an incessant drum beat typical of popular music. This is unlike any other Philip Glass CD that I have and I have about a dozen of them. Where can I get rid of this?

When this album was announced, I was quite looking forward to it; before hearing anything, I compared it to the wonderful work done on "Reich Remixed" which takes some daring approaches to Reich's music and does an excellent job (with a few exceptions) of being new and exciting. Unfortunately, Glass Remixed isn't as daring or as good.

Much of the music is overshadowed with Glass's music and themes. It's as if someone was playing the original music in the background and sound effects were added to it. Throughout listening to Remixed, these sound effects got in the way of the music and I ended up digging out the original pieces and listening to them. However, there are some excellent pieces of interpretation contained within: Etude #2, the Tirol Concerto, and the Saxophone Concerto stand out (especially the Saxophone Concerto since I don't care for the original piece).

The other mark against this effort is all the work had to come from the Orange Mountain Music catalog due to ownership complications. This is not to say there aren't outstanding pieces in the catalog, but this restriction limits most of Glass's seminal works from being considered.

As a huge Glass fan, I was mildly disappointed, but I applaud the effort and the concept behind it.

I'm a HUGE Mantovani fan and have had mixed results trying to upgrade my collection to CDs. This collection is the original orchestra arrangements of all the classics. This is the one to buy.

The Mantovanti Orchestra shows off their "marvelous versatility" in this "wonderful" collection of "8 CDs", with titles that tell you "just what to expect", such as: "The Love Songs", "Memorable Classics", "Itallian Favorites", "On Broadway", etc. You can set the MOOD for practically ANY occassion! There are even some "popular" selections that we all know and treasure like: "Moon River", "Over the Rainbow" and "Autum Leaves"!
You will NOT want to remove these GREAT CDs from your CD Player, once you have listened to them! They make "nice" background music for small get-togethers or "lovely" background music for those "ROMANTIC DINNERS", for you and your "SPECIAL SOMEONE"!!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS SET!!! It is a GREAT DEAL for the money, even at the full price!!!

Growing consists of Kevin Doria on bass and guitar and Joe Denardo on guitar. Hailing from New York City, this instrumental band comes at you with shimmering sounds, ambient soundscapes, and crushing fuzz. The Soul of the Rainbow and the Harmony of Light is Growing's second release on the kranky label and they certainly prove that they have the ability to create a powerful ambience.

"Onement" begins with shimmery, spacey guitars that create a feel of void. It's as if Growing was putting out their first sonic paintbrush for all to hear and create in the listener a sense of anticipation for the next sonic stroke. Slowly, patiently, Growing begins to add hums and texture to the mix. This hum eventually overpowers the spacey sounds and the duo lay out another brush for all to relish in. This hum is textured and varied in places, making the sound more organic rather than like a loop. About have way through the piece, it begins to sound like ocean waves and perhaps a little like keyboards playing amongst them. The hum returns and a shimmering kind of fuzz visits the ears. Eventually, all the sonic brushes come together to create a beautiful soundscape that is quite moving. As the song comes to a close, the fuzziness of the tune becomes overwhelming and then silence. "Anaheim II" begins with huge, fuzzed out guitars. This entrance flows perfectly out of the crescendo of "Onement." There are spacey keys that mingle with the stereophonic fuzz. This is definitely an experiment in unending noise loops. This is a continual seven-minute track of very unusual fuzz.

"Epochal Reminiscence" begins with the growing guitar sound that hums warmly through the speakers. This hum is peaceful and glowing. It's amazing how the duo is able to sustain sounds with their guitars. It's a demonstration of patience and control. There are guitar notes that dance amid the hum. This track also has the patient, controlled feel of the track before, but in a more calming sort of way rather than in the fuzzed out grating way. About 15 minutes into the track, the hum becomes warmer and quieter. "Primitive Associations/Great Mass Above" begins with birds chirping in the background. This sets a soothing, early morning sort of feel. Then, a hum and bright shimmer comes into the mix amid the birds. This sort of track is perfect for relaxation and contemplation. Eventually, storm clouds roll in and thunder and rain come into the mix. The thunder and rain roll in amidst moody, floating keys and shimmering noises. This is twelve minutes of beautiful ambient noise and samples of natural elements. I think this is my favorite track on the disc.

Growing is a duo of experts in careful, patient ambient soundscapes. From obstinate fuzz to glimmering, peaceful moments, The Soul of the Rainbow and the Harmony of Light has all the right range for a beautiful, ambient journey.

Long attention span. This is drone. There are lapses into field recording, there is a sense of earnestness that pervades this release, an immediacy that welcomes you into the long, long washes of sound. If you wish that Stars of the Lid would hurry up, or that Black Dice would slow down, you'll really, really like this record a lot.

This is a great album, and it's too bad it was allowed to go out-of-print, but asking $75 as one seller does is mind-blowing. Reminds me of the controversy in 1993 when it was almost pulled off the market through a lawsuit because no one "official" knew who this guy "David G. Porter" was and that as far as they knew he has no authorization to do any work whatsoever on Ives's music. EMI had the spine to keep it on the market but it looks like someone decided it wasn't selling well enough to reprint. My advice is to find a friend's copy and burn a boot of it, and scan the booklet for my program notes in your favorite language. Truly a great CD but that's too much to ask.

This is not a single, it's a full CD of live performances of some of Dee's best songs. These acoustic versions are the true Dee Carstensen. She has one of the most powerful voices you'll ever hear, her harp is unique & amazing, her back up musicians are the best, and there's a duet on here that's out of this world. A live audience must give her energy, because the power of this CD is 10 times as strong as the other albums recorded in the studio. If you can't see Dee live, this is the next best thing.

I first heard Dee at the Fez in NYC during the recording of this CD... the most beautiful voice I've ever had the pleasure to experience... she's one of new york's best kept secrets

Why Dee is not a superstar is beyond me !! She has been a hidden treasure for 20 years. I remember my father comimg home one day after hearing her play in Rochester, NY and the only thing he could say was that he met someone who sang like an Angel. If you don't belive me....listen

Lesley Garrett has a gorgeous voice, that much is obvious. And it shines on tracks like Ave Maria, Bess You Is My Woman Now, Et Si Demain and The Summer Knows. While her voice is a bit heavy for a musical theater repitoire her renditions of A Boy Like That/I Have a Love and I Dreamed A Dream work really, really well. However she runs into problems on tracks like Work For No One/Blackbird, Mambo Italiano (which doesn't fit the mood of the rest of the album at all), and Over the Rainbow. I think that these are songs that sound better with a more relaxed, less "legit" sound which Garrett seems to have trouble with. It's definately worth getting for the highlights I mentioned above, as well as her duets but Michael Ball and Bryn Terfel. Both are lovely. Really the presence of a few awkward tracks keeps this from a 5 star rating
