If you don't appreciate Sigmund Romberg, you have no soul.

I wish the CD would have included his "Shadows on the Moon" (from "The Girl of the Golden West")sung by the devine, Perfect Ingenue, Jeanette Mac Donald. That musical oater was based on a Puccini Opera & play and included brilliant performances by Nelson Eddy who was trim and in excellent voice.

Inside U.S.A. was recorded before the show was fully cast in order to beat the 1948 ASCAP strike, which explains why non-cast members performed some of these songs. Most tracks on CD for the first time!

Great material on both scores.......2005-09-16

"Inside U.S.A." was a huge hit revue with the unique Bea Lillie, Jack Haley of "The Wizard of Oz" and such future names as Carl Reiner (not on the recordings). "Atlanta" was apparently cut as it doesn't appear in any programs of the show, and it is revue material with topical references so younger Broadway fans may wonder what the hell Bea is singing about (Atlanta was known for it's federal prison, imagine her in a neat striped suit and matching pillbox hat with a ball and chain to twirl), but her spirit was perhaps as well captured on these tracks as it ever was in a studio recording. "The Bandwagon" is also wonderful, Fred Astaire at his stage height just before he went Hollywood (with his sister Adele, a bigger star then), and a pioneer recording that was LP length before that existed. All the material by Dietz and Schwartz in it is classic and showed up in the very different film 25 years later. But these recordings may be better, and the sound is brilliant for the time. So, a bargain and let's hope the trove of theater recordings continues to be mined - how about all the Decca recordings of Bea, including the unreleased 60s recordings as well as the two lps from her legendary "Evening with Beatrice Lillie"? (See the Joyce Grenfell "Requests" recent CD for a handfull of the Decca material, beautifully remastered as bonus cuts).

Splendid Dvorak Cello Concerto Plus More From Vogler, Kirschlager, Robertson and NYPO............2007-01-03

This splendid Sony recording of the Dvorak Cello Concerto was highly praised when it was released back in 2005, so I am surprised to be the first customer to write a review of it at Amazon.com. Young German cellist Jan Vogler offers an impassioned, brilliant performance of the concerto, accompanied by guest conductor David Robertson - now music director of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra - and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, in a recording which compares favorably to the best of Rostropovich's. This is a brilliant, emotionally sizzling performance from both the soloist and orchestra which was recorded well by Sony's engineers at Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall; I was captivated instantly by both the splendid sound and elegant playing as soon as I heard the opening notes of the concerto's first movement. And I might add too that I have rarely heard the New York Philharmonic sound better lately - either live or recorded - under Robertson's direction.

Seeking to trace the artistic origins of Dvorak's cello concerto, Vogler and Sony have opted for a most novel approach, combining some of Dvorak's shorter chamber music pieces and songs with those composed by American popular composer Stephen C. Foster - whom Dvorak acknowledged as an important source of inspiration for his works composed while residing here in the United States back in the early 1890s. Accompanying Vogler is Austrian lieder accompanist Helmut Deutsch, whose own brilliant playing on the piano compliments both Vogler's playing and mezzosoprano Angelika Kirschlager's singing (Distinguished Austrian mezzosporano Schlager's elegant phrasing can be heard on her delightful renditions of Foster's "Jeanie With the Light Brown Hair" and "Wilt Thou Be Gone, Love?" and the vocal sections of Dvorak's "Zigeunerlieder".).

Early electro/synth-pop collection from Germany.......2004-01-18

This collection gathers together the best of Germany's electro and earliest synth-pop artists' best work. It covers the years from 1979 to 1995. Compiled by Thomas Bar and DJ Hell, it is a fantastic collection.

German music has always been given a bad name, sometimes justly, but mostly unjustly. It's easy to dismiss an other European country's music but how many people have actually heard the groups and artists that are on this CD? Probably very little, however most people, for some reason, have a dim view of German music, only making an exception for Karftwerk and Can, and therefore just dimiss the music as 'Europop'.

How wrong they are. This collection has underground alongside mainstream. From Weltklang's 'VFB Heimat' to Grauzone's big hit 'Eisbaer', from No More's influential 'Suicide Commando' to DAF's percussion-heavy 'Tanz mit mir', all of these tracks sit very easily beside each other. This is an electro/synth-pop collection and it shows how advanced the German's were compared to some of the English electro groups of the day like 'OMD' or artists like, yuck, Howard Jones.
