The second in the Hip-O imprint's series of '80s box sets, this three-CD compilation collects 42 hits from the decade of decadence. For those who want to shake their booty, they can get their freak on to Rick James, "Jump" for the Pointer Sisters, and do a little "Safety Dance" to Men Without Hats. Love new wave? Indulge in Flock of Seagulls, Duran Duran, Devo, and Adam Ant. And for those who want to rock--although not too hard--there's Billy Idol, the Pretenders, Rick Springfield, and Scandal. Yes, many of these cuts are predictable, but there are some surprise entries, like Rockwell's "Somebody's Watching Me," Greg Kihn's "Jeopardy," Peter Schilling's "Major Tom," and Jan Hammer's "Miami Vice Theme"(!). Given this set's diverse artist roster, it's doubtful that you'll love every song; and, truthfully, the third disc is weaker than the others. But as a throwback for the music-video generation, Hit Me with Your '80s Box! makes a hip retro compilation that may finally get pop-culture snobs to admit that they liked many of these songs a lot more than they were willing to let on back in the day. --Bryan Reesman
Customer Reviews:
Review of Hit Me with Your 80's Box!.......2007-01-09
Good stuff, especially for those of us nostalgic for 80's music. It's a nice three CD collection of some of the best mainstream stuff from the 80's, including some music I had trouble finding elsewhere.
essential.......2005-09-16
I mix 80s dance music and the number of times when mixing that I find myself reaching for either this compilation or its companion, "I Want My 80s Box," is extraordinary. These are two outstanding collections. They are pricey, but worth every penny. For many people, owning these two will be all the 80s music you'll ever need.
Fidelity is outstanding, the tracks are well organized more or less chronologically, and the sequences in which tracks are placed is excellent. The "box" itself in which the 3 CDs come is sturdy, it is easily folded out in part or in whole to access any of the CDs quickly and easily (unlike many multi-CD offerings). Liner notes are extensive and interesting.
This offering is a class act all the way. Highly, highly recommended. 7 stars.
Great Collection, But ..........2004-07-19
This is a great collection of awesome 80's music, but I feel that each disc should have had about three more songs on them. Also, I think the title refers to Pat Benatar's HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOT. Strangely enough, the song is nowhere to be found on this set???
I don't understand..........2004-04-10
...Why does this box set not contain the very song its title is a reference to? If it were to be truly complete, it would contain: HIT ME WITH YOUR RHYTHM STICK, by Ian Dury & The Blockheads.
A great by for Any fan on Eighties Music.......2003-05-02
Hit me with your 80's box is great box set for anyone who likes eighties music. While it not as good as "Like, Omigod:The 80's pop culture box" It still will take the listener back to a great time in the music industry.

Using a typically deft DJ touch, Karl Hyde and his sharp-eared cohorts flesh out a compelling collection of new textures and beats on these extrapolations from the original singles on Underworld's excellent 1999 release Beaucoup Fish. In typical remix fashion, thematic tidbits get deconstructed and rebuilt, framing familiar songs with new settings. However, Underworld's low-key tactics make these small nuggets of rhythm or intriguing melodic elements sneak up on you. Check out how the "Jedis Sugar Hit Mix" of "Jumbo" takes a naked central melody and cuts it up into snippets of synthesized bliss that gradually lend the song an entirely different texture and direction. When the song kicks into gear for real, those spare snippets are washed away with oceanic blasts of keyboard and rhythm. By stripping the original rhythms and melodies bare, most of these mixes open enticing new musical avenues, often producing song versions that match, or even surpass, their predecessors. Customer Reviews:
Twas very impressive with some of it but it needed...more.......2004-01-09
I thought this Single Box from Underworld was worth buying only paying a total of $21.50 for it. I thought the Push Upstairs single was the best single out of all three of them (I would give it --***1/2-- stars). The Adam Beyer Remix and the Roger S. Blue Plastic People Mix were the two bests mixes out of the Push Upstairs selection. Please Help Me is one of the most beautiful tunes I've heard coming from Underworld. It starts off with pretty music and melody in the beginning with echoing voices and progresis into a nice upbeat tune. Bruce Lee was kind of a strange song when I heard it on Beaucoup Fish but after hearing the different versions on the Push Upstairs single, I have different thoughts of it now. The Micronauts Remix was very impressive with the beginning beat as it gradually progressed a minute later (I had headphones on the first time I heard it and the sort of buzzing sounds in the beginning were a bit painful to the ears having the volume loud enough) and the Dobropet version of Bruce Lee I did not get at all...felt like there was no beat or anything to it. The King Of Snake single was yet another impressive single after hearing it on Beaucoup Fish and 1992-2002 (I would give it --***-- stars). The Straight (Mate) Mix, Barking Mix, and the Fatboy Slim Remix are my favorites out of it all (Fatboy Slim is a GENIOUS). Lastly, the Jumbo single (I would give it --**1/2-- stars). Jumbo was never one of my favorites on Beaucoup Fish but the different remixes were quite good. The Future Shock World's Apart Remix was my only real favorite for it's pretty background melodies and easy beat. The rest of them sounded the same to me except for the two Jedis versions of the songs. Cups (Salt City Orchestra's Vertical Bacon Vocal) was another beautiful tune adding in the lyrics from the orignal version of Cups on Beaucoup Fish (also Everything, Everything; LIVE even though that was more dance). Cups could've been a bit shorter but overall it was great.
That's my REVIEW on Undrworld's Singles Box. Hope it helped you out if you are thinking of purchasing it somewhere wherever you live ^_^
AN AMAZING SET FOR A DECENT PRICE!.......2001-05-24
This set includes some pretty impressive remixes. I would highly recommend this to the die-hard Underworld fan just to hear what other people can do to their already amazing songs.
The spin on the songs as usual create impressive sounds and break the mad beats, like fred flinstone jumpin around with bald feet!
Get it while you can!
-Grandad Girolamo
casual listeners can skip it.......2001-03-12
Fans must have it. Obviously there is some filler here and a lot of stand out mixes of already amazing singles. It is really fun to put these in your CD changer and hit "random play".
4.5 stars: a great purchase for techno-hungry fans.......2001-02-02
I bought this quite a while ago and STILL am stuck on the remixes of King of Snake!!!! Fatboy Slim's is astonishing. Most everything's wearing lovely new costumes. All the big fans should have these tracks. Even some of the basic edits are awesome (notably KOS & BL -- but Jumbo does sound gutted). This is NOT a complete collection - I believe atleast five remixes are missing (King of Snake-2 missing, Push Upstairs-2 missing, Bruce Lee-1 missing). If you're diehard and wealthy, just buy all the singles/EPs; otherwise, this is an excellent purchase for the price! "Please Help Me" is sooooo beautiful!!!!!!

DJ's and Techno Purist Need Only Apply.......2000-10-28
I'm breaking rank with the rest of the reviews. Is it because I think it's an awful collection. No, it's just that it is so unlike the rest of the CD's they have put put out. It is like being in a club hearing the same song over and over again. If I was on a budget I would buy the DVD "Everything, Everything". That is an experience which it is impossible to watch sitting still- ya gotta dance! But let's say you're a DJ, this box set is a MUST for the beats.

Customer Reviews:
And Now That It's 13 Years Later ..........2007-04-04
... after the first printing of this collection, let me say LOUD and CLEAR that WaxTrax! (now TVT) Records NEEDS TO RE-RELEASE THIS COLLECTION OF CLASSICS!!! As it stands, Black Box is a hard to find collector's item, as the prices for used copies can attest (nobody's gonna have a new one available, kids, at least not for a reasonable price). You're lucky if you can find someone who kept immaculate, anal-retentive care of the discs. I was lucky to find a copy of this set at my local record shop, but the condition of the CDs would rate as GOOD, VERY GOOD at best. I'm just glad that after 13 years, they will still play in my CD player.
I'm not going to fire off a huge, elaborate critique of the set. If this kind of music from this time period pushes the dopamine receptors in your brain over the brink (and you know who you are), then this collection is for you. Yeah, it's primarily industrial in nature, but there are hints of techno, hard/goth rock, and dark experimental music. The 3-CD set clocking in at roughly 3 1/2 hours of music represents a nice, thick, bloody slice of a time and a place, and yes, it's just that damn good. Read the other reviews for point by point details. At worst, this one gets 4.5 stars. At best, it easily garners 5.
Wow....just wow.......2006-11-27
My interest in industrial music and its history lead me down the path to this little almost forgetten jem at this point.
This is industrial music as its not made anymore, as industrial music since the death of this label has become even more of a minor niche market fading into the obscure. But this box set captures industrial's golden age. An interesting mix of styles and history, it actually prompted to go visit the orginal WaxTrax store in Denver while on vacation(ironicly seeing one of the artists on the boxset.KMFDM). With all the music revials going on, I wish someone would revive this kind of industrial music, before its completely forgotten. The track that is the most well known is probably the cover of "Supernaut" with the Trent Renzor vocals, but that is to over look alot of other amazing material. You can feel the energy, the thoughtfulness, and the pioneering spirit racing though every track. The only shortcoming i'd say would be that Front 242's material couldn't be included.
Music history buffs will also get a kick out of this, there is a little booklet helping outline the history of the label, and quite a history it is. I find it quite sad that there is no real written books about WaxTrax and the chicago industrial scene of the 80s like there is for punk, hardcore, indie and their counterparts.
I recommend this comp 100%, and hope that you can feel the same love for this music as I do.
I wish I could give this collection 18 stars.......2002-11-04
I dj'd at college radio stations for 5 years in the late '80s, and was always pleasantly excited when I found a Wax Trax! label in the New bin. (Unfortunately, I usually did my shows in the dark and thought the name was "Wax Traxi" for the longest time!) The label was a mainstay of industrial music, and founders Jim Nash and Dannie Flesher consistently managed to sign and produce the most exciting musicians of the time -- the many incarnations of dear troubled genius Al Jourgensen, The Young Gods, FLA, Coil, Controlled Bleeding, Doubting Thomas, A Split Second, Lead Into Gold, Psychic TV, Foetus -- they are all here on three great discs packed with music that makes you want to move and feel. Disc One, Track One: Trent Reznor covers Black Sabbath's 'Supernaut' with 1000 Homo DJs -- a version previously unreleased, and then you are zipping through Sister Machine Gun and The Young Gods and oh so many more seminal industrial bands. Divine puts the "fun" in funky with "The Name Game", the label's second release. I was also happy to hear a few groups that had somehow slipped past me the first time around, like Wreck. I had a great time listening to this collection and am still listening to it. You can put in any of the three discs and be happy for a long time.
The packaging is beautiful -- a heavyweight black box covered with hip lettering and disturbing images; three black CD cases containing labeled discs and a listing with artist, cut, time and version information; and a terrific booklet that relates the anecdotal history of Wax Trax! -- it's artistically interesting as well as substantive and entertaining.
If you enjoy industrial music, you cannot go wrong with this incredible collection of the music and people that started it all. And why not put a few bucks into the pockets of the guys who loved the music more than the profits?
Worth the money!.......2002-02-28
This Chicago-based record label compilation is an awesome chunk of the work done by most of the best industrial bands that came out of N. America and Europe in the 80s. Very interesting and innovative music- fans of industrial music or darker techno should like most of this stuff quite a bit.
A wee handbook for the perplexed.......2000-11-25
This 3 CD set offers an excellent overview of the artists that made WaxTrax! Records synonymous with beautiful, challenging music. Coil, Thrill Kill Kult, Meat Beat Manifesto, Ministry, KMFDM, Pig, RevCo, even some early Frontline Assembly is featured on this Box. And for you NIN fans, there's even the original version of 1,000 Homo DJs' 'Supernaut' with Trent Reznor on vox. The enclosed booklet encapsulates the WT! history, including the TVT buyout. Overall, a great mix of music and information about the early days in Chicago that is well worth the price.

Customer Reviews:
A must and a classic.......2005-12-17
This was the first Goth compilation I ever bought - I was at a little used record place in Boston and was drawn to it. I've used it for my own compilations and as a teaching tool to learn about the Dark at Heart. Excellent choice.
excellent compilation.......2005-10-11
Im probably considered a newbie to Goth and Darkwave, but I have found this compilation to have some really interesting and good tracks from a variety of artists. Artists I have not been exposed to yet. CD 3 is my favorite with many songs I liked. I recommend this release
A good starter set, not for every fledgling batling........2004-01-02
This set was one of the first "Gothic" CD sets that I purchased, and I truly believe that it's an excellent sort of sampler to the different types of music that make up the Gothic music genre.
However, it's not for everyone. If you're a big fan of lighter, more melodic goth or darkwave, and would like to listen to some diverse bands that AREN'T on the Projekt label (except for a few key exceptions, there ARE 60 songs in this set), this is a nice little purchase.
Admittedly, I'm one of the few blasphemers that think that Bauhaus isn't all that special, and so I'll let you know right now--if you're looking for something that's full of music along the same lines, you'll not find that here. What you will find, however, is a plethora of bands you may not have heard of, with lots of little surprises awaiting you. Some of it seems a little dated, but most tracks won't make you groan with thoughts of Flock of Seagulls hair.
My top ten favorites from this album include (in no particular order) :
1. Mountain Voices (Remix) - James Ray and the Performance
2. Harmonies - Sofia Run (It sounds like "Popcorn"! Tee hee.)
3. Resurrection Mary - Ex-Voto
4. The Haunting - Nosferatu
5. Holy You - Deep Red
6. The Enochian Angel Of The 7th Aethyr - David J (It's weird, and sexy!)
7. Do You Believe in Angels - The Last Dance
8. Caged Bird - The Shroud (Being local makes me biased, I think.)
9. Religious As Hell - March Violets
10. T-2000(Kokoro) - Mephisto Walz
So many bands, So little time.......2003-07-27
A great starter for those that want to know what true goth music is. I would recommend this to you, its has a lot of bands and great tunes. Dont pass this up.
Fair and even handed (Like Fox News)..........2003-07-10
This is, for the most part a good compilation of some of the less notable bands of the mid to late 90's goth scene mixed in with some of the big names of the past couple of decades. It may not be worth the 40 bucks cleopatra wants to charge you for it new but it's definately worth the looking for a used copy if its in good condition.

Customer Reviews:
whole lotta ambient goin' on . . . ........2007-01-25
I got my hands on this about a year ago, and it was a worthwhile purchase. There's just over 13 hours of music on the 12 CDs, and no matter which one you throw in, you're bound to like what you hear. I don't think there's a bad song in the set, and the range of artists included is pretty broad (There's even a Hawkwind track in here somewhere. Who'd a thought??). If you really enjoy ambient and can find this collection, snap it up -- you won't be sorry.
If you find this set enjoyable, I would also recommend Dubnology One - Journeys Into Outer Bass, and Dubnology 2 - Lost In Bass. There's definitely some overlap there.
Aquarium For Your Ears.......2001-10-12
To speak about this extensive set of music allegorically, "Space 'n' Bass" is like an aquarium full of beautiful and varied tropical fish, each interesting in it's own way, whether breathtakingly colorful, exotically compelling or curiously fascinating. And by the very nature of the mediums, both the fish in the imaginary aquarium and the music in these CDs achieve relaxing and beautiful movement via endless repetition and effectively enjoyed for limited time periods only.
This is not to say that "Space 'n' Bass" is boring; it boasts an impressive array of ambient electronica offering ample doses of acid jazz, jungle, world-beat and beat-box percussive underpinnings, a nice balance of analog, digital and sampled textures, a smattering of other instruments, infectious bass patterns and surprising aural constructions. From the armchair world mini-tours of Loop Guru to Dfuse's astral journeys to Chicane's smooth soundtrack jazz to the icy meditations of Crystal Moon, Optica and Transfinite to Quad's cinematic visions to Carl Cox's inimitable constructions to Astralasia's cavernous soundscapes to the controlled urban/electro chaos of Fluid, every sub-genre of mid-'90's ambient and electronic are represented without pandering to schmaltzy new age-y compositions. The final four CDs do tend to grate on the nerves with relentless early electronica dance affectations but they do have the right to be represented here and will get you moving if you are so inclined.
Aficionados of this cross-genre of music will probably prefer to buy entire works by the artists they enjoy while listeners only marginally interested in ambient, electronica and chill-out music may find the sheer volume of this compilation, well in excess of 14 hours, to be simply too much to digest given any period of time. My argument is that, at approximately the price of three individual CDs, this 12-CD opus is worth picking up whether to peruse the work of non-mainstream ambient/electronic artists or to use as a soundtrack for your daily activities. Too bad it's a limited release. After all, isn't the function of a well-kept tropical aquarium to relax, dazzle and mystify while allowing itself to be completely ignored as well? "Space 'n' Bass" is just such an aquarium for your ears.
Great music, lots of repeats!.......2001-03-06
Well, yeah, the music is pretty darn good. But some songs are repeated on multiple CD's! What's up with that?
Wow!.......2000-07-12
This is a great box set. Its 12 cds from the best ambient artists around. This box set more typical ambient music rather than the unique sounds of Richard D. James (Aphex Twin), Autechre, and many other ambient essentials left out of this set. This is great if you want to sample some great ambient artists. The best on this set is The Orb's Little Fluffy Clouds, Loop Guru's Skin Heaven, and Carl Cox's Tribal Jedi. And at this price, you can't go wrong.

Skip This One & Grab The 20th Anniversary Set.......2005-07-18
I've been a DJ for over 30 years and I was mystified when this set was released five years after the 20th Anniversary Hall Of Fame box. This one adds nothing to the 20th set. I say skip this one and enjoy the ORIGINAL Soul Train box from 1994.
A unique box.......2001-07-23
Many boxes consist of various songs by various artists usually mid level and chosen based on availability. The selections for this 3 CD set were chosen by Soul Train master Don Cornelious (sp?) and generally kept it to one song per artist. Although 7 inch single versions were generally used here, the variety and availability really shines. For example Disc 3 open with Micheal Jackson (Since when do you see a Micheal Jackson Epic release on ANY multi artist compilation
< on another label even> ) The VERY NEXT song is from Prince, who to my knoledge has NEVER been an any other compilation befere (Except USA for Africa)
A wise investment!
SOUL TRAIN KEEPS "RECORD" AND "TAKES YOU THERE.".......1999-04-13
I REALLY APPRECIATE THE MUSIC ON THIS C.D. SET....IT BRINGS THE PAST RIGHT INTO THE FUTURE, REMINDING THOSE THAT APPRECIATE R.B.-SOUL AND FUNK THAT "SOUL TRAIN" INTRODUCED US TO THE FACES THAT WENT ALONG WITH THE MUSIC.....AND THE DANCES THAT KEPT THE PACE OF THE FEELING EACH NOTE CONVEYED TO IT'S AUDIENCE.......THE SELECTIONS HERE...FROM MICHEAL JACKSON TO ARETHA FRANKLIN...TO EARTH WIND AND FIRE, CAPTIVATE THE TIMES.....THE ESSENCE.....I THINK THE SATURDAY MORNING OR THE FRIDAY NIGHT YOU PUT THIS C.D. ON YOU WILL GREATLY APPRECIATE EACH SELECTION......TRY IT! YOU'LL REMINISCE ALONG WITH EVERY SONG.
Greatest music all in one.......1998-07-31
It bring me back to 70's.Old songs always make you feel so good.If you were a fan never miss it! Beautiful and nice packaged.

Customer Reviews:
Electronic dance classics........1998-06-13
I don't know how this compilation is offered here, but one that I purchased from the store included: Hypnotic State CD1, Hypnotic State CD2, and the free bonus CD which came out to be GIEZ, The Ambient Room. The first Cd included such big names as Orbital, FSOL, Transmutator, New Order, and Bypass Unit which delivered great electronic sounds. The second Cd is little bit worse than first. It includes such song as 808 State's Lopez(remixed by Propellerheads). I think that name of the third cd speaks for itself, ambient music. Overall, if you are into the electronic music, then you will like this compilation.

Customer Reviews:
great compillation.......2004-04-07
i'm a die hard fan of freestyle but the other people who reviewed this box set are stuck in the past. I like the way freestyle music has progressed. They still have their roots and are trying new things. Great group of songs, really got me movin. Plus I really don't mind the aversion from the basic beat to something more uptempo as long as its not trance
Most of these singers need to get with the program........2004-03-29
This CD is Koo because you get all of the collection for 25 dolllars. BUT, out of all 4 CD's excluding the Euro Invasion(forget about those euro invasion cd'd) there are enough songs to probably make 1 good cd. I'll break it down: A lot of songs don't belong on this CD, and they ain't from Canada and make the CD look good. Goods songs are Disc One: tracks 1,2,17,19,20. Disc Two: 2,8(P.S #7 the ughy hughy dughy song is hella gay. Disc Three: 2,4,7,9,10,15, Disc Four: 1,2,3,4,10,11,12,13,15(Best CD). all other songs either were used and has nothing to do with freestyle heaven or are straight up bogussssssss!
YOU CALL THIS FREESTYLE ??.......2004-02-28
Well you can see by my title to this comment i was defenetly dissapointed with this 5 cd box set.I cant belive i only found one track to be appealing to me, and i love freestyle and i'll give any type of new freestyle a chance, as long as they dont cross the line into euro , progressive type of beats. Well sure enough 85% of these cd's contain euro beats all that progressive stuff you would hear at your downtown club atmosphere. If i wanted to buy a euro/progressive cd i would've done that. I admit they threw in a lil' suzy here and a lil stevie b there but those songs are the 2000 version and do not sound THE SAME.The voices were the original artists but the tones and they way they sing them is totatly diferent from the original way they usually sound .As a freestyle die hard fan i was sad and dissapointed beacause here i thaught i was gonna listen to some new artists and keep the freestyle alive, but now i see why freestyle isn't around anymore because if they come out with music like this and call it freestyle theres no wonder why us the loyal fans stay away from it.Oh and one more thing these songs are not complete from begining to end, they made it a mix wich totaly made me angry.Well is not like if i wanted to hear them in there full versions because this NEW FREESTYLE isn't good anyway.
A TRUE FREESTYLE FAN FROM CHICAGO
P.S.
I'M STILL A FAN BUT NOT THIS TYPE OF "FREESTYLE" FAN.
I almost forgot don't think i gave it a star, in order for your comment to be posted you gotta give it at least one star. But by all means i dont mean any disrespect to amazon or cdnow.com, i just dont like this cd at all other than that cdnow and amazon are a great cd provider and with out this service i couldn't find cd's at all beacuse music stores dont carry any freestyle.
