The Edge of Now

The Edge of Now

Editorial Reviews
From URB Magazine
Though his output spans electro to progressive house, John Selway runs longest and hardest with techno and trance's big dogs. He's done tracks and EPs for Deep Dish, Instinct and Plus 8 and co-owns Serotonin; he's collaborated with Jamie Hodge, Deep Dish, Carl Cox and BT. Edge of Now, his first album in a 10-year career, reflects these commercial and stylistic lineages with an aplomb that makes its 12 pulsing electro-techno hybrid tracks stand out in a world full of mediocre club-filler tracks.

And yet there's the rub - Edge of Now fails as an album because, like efforts from stylistic bedfellows Paul van Dyk and BT, few, if any, of the tracks share any context outside of being handy on the dance floor. "Turbo" is every big-beat-bit as invigorating as Underworld's "Pearl's Girl" and by itself pounds like a wonderful madcap jackhammer, tight on the hi-hat, upbeat and edgy with the repeating "turbo" puncturing through the elegant synth lines. Same goes for "Digitalemotion," an electro thriller on par with the best of Sven Väth or Anthony Rother, clean and cold with the rapid-fire throbbing bass line and mysterious metallic harmony that floats off in the distance like a robotic angel flashing soulful manna down to the dance-floor massive. Yet Underworld constructs thematic context between their songs, and Rother taps an artiste's plane once removed from crass commercialism - but Selway can't. He seems too rooted in the 12-inch world of six-minute masterpieces to achieve a cohesive album just yet. We give him an "A" for effort, though.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing new Tony Robbins DVD + CD... .......2007-05-27

Being a longtime fan of Tony Robbins, this was an ideal product. It features a full nearly hourlong DVD plus a CD, and is a perfect way to preview the Unleash the Power Within seminar event, and to get a great firsthand look at Tony's life-changing techniques in action.

Packed with useful tips, strategies and new anchoring/reframing insights, you'll be impressed with Tony's presentation in this "larger than life", motivating and uplifting presentation.

Following Anthony Robbins' techniques from back with his original books helped transform my life and was the foundation work that has helped me make millions in sales. I continue to be a huge fan of Tony's (UPW-Colorado Springs was great!) and use his techniques daily to help improve my life and the lives of others who I serve worldwide.

Be sure to grab this, it's a perfect first way to see Tony in action on video (and until recent years, this was rare), and for those who have been inspired by him, this takes it to the next level. Buy it now! Play full out and live the life of your dreams.

Album Description

This newly remastered reissue marks a welcome return to the catalog of the first volume of the classic 4-CD collection that was formerly available on the CRI label. The works recorded on this disc span the first six years of what Harry Partch (1901-1974), slightly tongue-in-cheek, called the "third period" of his creative life. They show him moving away from the obsession with "the intrinsic music of spoken words" that had characterized his earlier output (the vocal works of 1930-33 and 1941-45) and towards an instrumental idiom, predominantly percussive in nature. This path was to take him through the "music-dance drama" King Oedipus (1951)—-the culmination of his "spoken word" manner—to the "dance satire" The Bewitched (1954-55), in which his new percussive idiom manifests itself. The three works on this disc show Partch before, during, and after this period of transition. In their quiet, forlorn way, the Eleven Intrusions are among the most compelling and beautiful of Partch's works. The individual pieces were composed at various times between August 1949 and December 1950, and only later gathered together as a cycle. Nonetheless they form a unified whole, with a nucleus of eight songs framed by two instrumental preludes and an essentially instrumental postlude. Although foreshadowed by the dance sequences of King Oedipus, the Plectra and Percussion Dances (1952) are the first of Partch's major works to be wholly instrumental in conception. They stand in relation to Oedipus as a satyr play in relation to a Greek tragedy—hence the work's subtitle, "Satyr-Play Music for Dance Theater." He felt that after the prolonged period of composition and production of Oedipus it was "almost a necessity to give vent to feelings and ideas, whims and caprices, even nonsense, that seem to have no place in tragedy." The final work on this disc is Ulysses at the Edge, written at Partch's studio at Gate 5 in July 1955. Ulysses, which Partch describes as a "minor adventure in rhythm," is unique among his mature compositions in that, in its original form, it did not call for any of his own instruments. The version recorded here, for alto and baritone saxophones, Diamond Marimba, Boo, Cloud-Chamber Bowls, and speaking voice, is considered the third version of the piece.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Now it's possible to get your Partch all in a row.......2006-02-20

Harry Partch is the quintissential mad genius of music--his image of music that was non-Eurocentric led to him devising his own tonal scale based on ancient Greek and Asian methods and then creating his own instruments. This series release of Partch music lets one organize his Partch tastes and get a real sense of his progress through time. This disc is superb for the Intrusions, ghostly little pieces that were my first introduction to this fine composer. I would also highly recommend volume 3, which has Barstow, one of my favorite Partch pieces.

Be prepared. This is classical music you have not been prepared for. If you're already a fan of Partch, aren't you glad SOMEONE is getting all his amazing stuff together in one tightly knit package?

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A century of British art songs to delight those who love them.......2006-06-26

These 53 songs have been collected by Naxos from their extensive acquisitions from Collins Classics, and perhaps other British sources now out of business. There's a steady cottage industry, year after year, producing the typical English art song, which is usually based on folk songs, but even in more modern idioms is profuondly conservative and nostaligic. Half these songs, not to mention half the composers, are totally unknown to American audiences, but the familiar names of Vaughan Williams and Britten represent high quality, and the lesser lights, such as Warlock and Quilter, are mainstays in this repertoire.

I'd challenge all but the most addicted listener to make it through more than ten songs at a sitting, and many of these pieces are tepid, offering comfort rather than inspiration. The singers are among the best, but Graham Johnson and Steuart Beford, who do most of the accompaniments, are lackluster. I know that won't be a popular comment, yet if you compare any of these songs with rendiitons done by Janet Baker, John Shirley-quirk, and most recently Bryn Terfel and Ian Bostridge, you immediately notice how much more intensity and drama is pesent than htis colleciton reveals.

"Groovin' In Tongues" is a repackaged release to CD of Bobby Rock's 1994 debut EP. This re-mastered, 6-song collection features four vocal tracks - one of which is a never-before-released bonus cut - and two instrumentals, including extended version of Edgar Winter's "Frankenstein." (The edited version would later appear on Bobby's critically-acclaimed official debut, "Out of Body.") The innovative blend of soulful vocals with Bobby's now-trademark funk-rock instrumental sound gives this record a decidedly progressive edge, making it an excellent addendum to Bobby's other titles.

5 out of 5 stars Bobby Rock The World's Greatest Vegan Drummer !.......2006-07-23

Groovin In Tongues is a dynamic, eclectic and captivating CD by the Zen Drummer Bobby Rock and his incredibly talented band. This music is uplifting, vibrant and replete with energy. Bobby Rock is a nonpareil drummer who has only recorded three CD's because he is so active in many other endeavors, mostly humanitarian. There is some hard rock, heavy metal and fusion in this frenzied, vivifying and stellar CD.

        5 out of 5 stars Driving Music.......2002-08-12

Just happened to be walking through a local CD store when I heard this album playing overhead. After inquiring at the front counter, the clerk stated that this CD was well worth the investment. He was absolutely right. One of my favorite CD's, this is the ultimate in driving music. Has the inherent coldness of modern day techno with just the right amount of ambient electronica warmth. Distant, driving, but never completely out of touch.

        4 out of 5 stars I keep listening.......2001-12-10

I bought this the day I was going to see Sasha & Digweed perform in NYC and was in the mood just to pick something up and listen to. But I keep listening. Has the pace of club music at about the 1am peak hour, very up rhythms. I like the album a lot, just don't give out 5's easily
