Philips's collection of major works that have propelled Gavin Bryars to New Music stardom is an effective overview of his music. The longest work is his Cello Concerto, handsomely played by Julian Lloyd Webber with a big, colorful tone and sustained intensity throughout its contemplative half-hour. A comparable mood pervades the bright tintinnabulating textures of the whimsically titled One Last Bar, Then Joe Can Sing. Similar as well, in their attractive serenity and suppressed sadness, are many of the other works here, prime among them the viola concerto in all but name, The North Shore, a tone painting of the rugged cliffs of northeast England. Adnan Songbook, settings of six poems by Lebanese poet Etel Adnan, are beautifully sung by soprano Valerie Anderson and delicately scored for a small ensemble. Bryars's biggest hits, The Sinking of the Titanic and Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet, have inspired him to numerous reworkings and capsuled fragments. They're represented by Titanic Lament, depicting a hymn tune dissolving into gray, watery textures, and two very different four-minute versions of Jesus' Blood, both with Tom Waits. Some will find Bryars's brand of minimalism veering too closely to New Age music, but others will immerse themselves in a sound world of originality and refined beauties. --Dan Davis

    2 out of 5 stars Dull Epics.......2006-09-28

EPICS is plagued by the muddled sound of TELARC's recordings. I noticed this trend beginning with TELARC's Hollywood's Greatest Hits, Vol. 2. The recoding seems flat. Also, this recording is a bit bombastic and just not representative of the original scores. The Suite from Gladiator is a good case in point. It glosses right over the basic themes presented in the film with an annoying nonce lance.

2 out of 5 stars I miss the old days.......2006-06-10

While the original compositions that this recording is based off of were all notable compositions, worthy of recognition and inclusion on a compilation disc such as this, it pains me to say that the Telarc/Cincinatti team has fallen from glory with this one (and a few others). Contrary to other reviewers, Kunzel was not the arranger for most or all of these. Someone named Jospeh Price, a name I hope never to see again on a Telarc recording unless immediately preceded by the words "not arranged by". I cannot stomach his cliched, bombastic, and empty endings most of all, but the arrangement (or despoiling of) the Lord Of The Rings themes is probably the worst mustical travesty I've come across. There is no resemblance to the original work except by accident. The only tracks I care for at all on the disc are the ones untouched by him, including the Overture from Lawrence of Arabia, the Harry Potter themes (apparently a Williams arrangement), and perhaps another track or two. Overall a painful experience. Try some vintage Kunzel instead.

    5 out of 5 stars Terrific!.......2004-05-03

Simply goes to show that good music is more than the composition: Arranging and conducting are the other elements which Eric Kunzel is a master at. The "Magnificent Seven" is a masterpiece of knowledge of the intent of the piece, instrumentation and clever ways of brining out the best that each instrument has to offer.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous compilation of movie themes!.......2004-01-25

This is one of the best movie theme compilations I have come across in a long time. With Erich Kunzel's able hands, the beautiful themes from "The Lord of the Rings," "Gladiator," "Harry Potter," "Dr. Zhivago," "Lawrence of Arabia," "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," "Ben Hur" and others are vividly brought to life.

My favorite has to be the "Fellowship of the Ring" suite which, at over 6 minutes, is the longest track in the CD. It includes the fabulous themes I love from the film such as the Hobbiton, Mines of Moria, Amon Hen, Isengard and Breaking of the Fellowship themes from the original soundtrack. The "Gladiator" suite comes as a close second but there really isn't a mediocre theme music in this collection. Erich Kunzel has done a fabulous job of selecting, orchestrating and arranging these wonderful pieces and I consider this one of the best classical CDs in my collection. Superb!

5 out of 5 stars "the grand scale of film music ~ Kunzel & the Pops".......2003-11-18

If it's powerful and majestic music you're looking for, you've come to the right place with Telarc's release of "Epics", featuring the world renown Cincinnati Pops Orchestra under the direction of maestro Erich Kunzel. Flawlessly recorded with exceptional detail from Direct Stream Digital (masters made during the recording sessions with the Sony/Philips DSD recording system) and it shows, believe you me you've never heard anything like it.

In most cases the performances closely match the original film score themes ~ listening to this album is like watching the film all over again, as the tension builds up and the release is right in your face ~ just like being there. Quality sound is the reason to purchase this CD, simply amazing.

Many "film-score-buffs" will already have some or many of the cues in their collections ~ but for the avid collector this is a dream come true. All under one umbrella is Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Tan Dun, Alex North, Miklos Rozsa, Max Steiner, John Williams and Hans Zimmer doing what they do best...composing!

Listen to the scores within "BEN HUR", "CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON", "DOCTOR ZHIVAGO", "HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE", "GLADIATOR", "GONE WITH THE WIND", "LAWRENCE OF ARABIA", "LORD OF THE RINGS:THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING", "MAGNIFICENT SEVEN", "MINORITY REPORT", "PEARL HARBOR", "SPARTACUS", "STAR WARS, EPISODE II:ATTACK OF THE CLONES" and "2001:A SPACE ODYSSEY" many Golden Globe nominees and winners, while others were Academy Award nominations and winners ~ whatever category they fell in...they were all winners on the grand scale of "Epic Film Music" ~ gotta love it!

4 out of 5 stars Great Follow Up To His Debut.......2006-05-29

"I've heard a lot of people sing, but this guy can SING"
    - unsolicited & overheard - a large security guy - The Viper Room (Los Angeles)

Singer-songwriter Tyrone Wells masterfully blends pop, soul, and rock infusing each song with energy and passion. Listening to Tyrone with your eyes closed, you'd think you were listening to a legendary soul-singer, which is in stark contrast to the tall, skinny white boy you see on the cover of his album, Snapshot. Not to mention his name is Tyrone.

Tyrone's emotion and charisma have captivated audiences throughout Los Angeles and The Orange County in venues such as the House of Blues (LA and Anaheim), The Galaxy Theater, and The El-Rey. Tyrone's independent movement continues to win avid supporters, having sold over 20,000 of his self-distributed records through live performances.

The California native Wells, won the 2004 Orange County Music Awards Best Male Artist, as well as the 2004 UCLA Spring Sing Best Overall & Best Solo Artist awards. Also in 2004, Tyrone had 8 TV placements in "One Tree Hill" (WB), "Rescue Me" (F/X), "North Shore" (FOX), and "The Mountain" (WB).

Tyrone Wells has a classic and powerful voice that can fill a thousand seat capacity room while singing A Cappella, which is demonstrated in his powerful set closer "When All is Said and Done." Wells' cool-headed stage presence seems to radiate with his love for people and his longtime passion for "music that matters." To quote Tyrone, "Music is the mistress and sometimes obsession that keeps me up at night, pleading for some beautiful resolution."

Along with his current album Snapshot, Tyrone has released Close: Live at McClain's. Wanting his frequent listeners to be involved in the live recording, Tyrone picked McClains, a coffeehouse where he has played weekly to packed houses, for 3 years. Several of the tracks on the live album give listeners a preview of songs that will appear on the next studio album. A DVD of the live performance is also in production for a 2005 release.

Snapshot and Close: Live at McClain's are available in stores via Harvest Media Distribution, or online at www.cdbaby.com/tyronewells.

    5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking.......2005-11-19

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this album. Listening to Tyrone is like therapy. His voice is filled with soul. My mom once said, "If Tyrone were on American Idol, He'd WIN!" I don't know if that helps, but it certainly is a good way of putting it. I just can't wait for his NEW Album that comes out in January!

5 out of 5 stars Music for everyone.......2005-09-09

Tyrone Wells has played at my school a few times, and each time he performs, both guys and girls alike are excited to see him. His tunes are reminiscent of Jack Johnson or John Mayer, with smooth vocals and easy-going guitar in the background. "Sea Breeze" is a definite favorite.

      4 out of 5 stars Hushed tones.......2005-01-02

Coming from Darla records and with phrases like "Move With Water, Drift With Tide" on the back it's easy to get an idea of what you're in for: washes of sound, atmosphere and blissed-out slices of heaven. The disc doesn't disappoint on any of those levels. Crafted in the vein of Füxa, Vir Unis and other minimalist artists the seven tracks here are hushed swaths of tones that move in and out without percussion. "Dawn Changes Everything" has a tinkling keyboard opening that rises and falls as the next wave of sounds builds and (theoretically) dawn breaks. The sounds are much warmer than some of the other works in this space but the nine-plus minute drone of "Burn" does begin to lose steam as the minutes tick off. If you've been the type to think NPR's Hearts of Space is just the punch line to an old Mystery Science Theater 3000, this is not for you. Anyone who likes to crank the speakers (or the headphones) and get lost in a disc will dig this.

Manual (aka jonus munk) has produced a few awsome records. check out his stuff on the amazing morr music label. Such beautiful electronia. Imagine Slowdive using synth instead of guitars and you get the idea.
With this, his most recent release, Manual has produced a much more ambient record. This could quite easily be Brian eno at his most beautiful. Imagine "an ending", vibe, with 7 different tracks.

if only his stuff was easier to find over here. Fans of morr music artists (mum, solvent etc) or Brian eno will love this

        Product Description

Jaci Rae - Singer, Writer...Renaissance Woman Award Winning Singer, No. 1 Best Selling Author, Indie Crusader and Top Radio Show Host. No wonder they call her a renaissance woman! It would have been enough - more than enough - for anyone with a great voice and a dream. Win the Golden Music Awards "Female Vocalist of the Year"...earn the prestigious Levi Strauss award...garner a bunch of other industry awards...release some fantastic CDs as Jaci has and the average person could have died then with a great, big smile on their face. Jaci Rae is not your average person. Far from it, in fact. She is that rare woman in command of a range of creative skills, thoroughly able to impact the world with each one. A Singer...Like a River When Jaci started out in the music business, she was the greenest of greenies. An outsider's outsider. Faced with those kinds of impossible odds, the hopes of hundreds of thousands of other would-be singing stars have withered on the vine and died. It only made Jaci all the more determined. She had little idea how to launch her own singing career. There were, after all, no manuals on the subject. So she learned. Several years of trial and error later - of learning what made music execs and their unusual industry tick - yielded success. Great success in fact.
