Though the late Steve Goodman is remembered mainly as the writer of "City of New Orleans" (and perhaps also as John Prine's best friend), Chicagoans knew him as the most ebullient performer on a dynamic folk circuit, and one of the best guitarists as well. The Earl of Old Town was Goodman's home turf, where the audience would know his topical "Lincoln Park Pirates" (about a notorious towing company) from its first notes and friends from blues harpist Corky Siegel to venerable mandolinist Jethro Burns would join their friend onstage to offer support. On this 1978 live recording, Goodman's revival of "Red Red Robin" makes for an unlikely showcase of his guitar virtuosity, while "Lost Highway," "Truck Drivin' Man," and "The Auctioneer" show his fondness for classic (and occasionally corny) country. His offbeat sense of humor found a kindred spirit in Shel Silverstein, whose "Three Legged Man" he covers. (Goodman's own "Men Who Love Women Who Love Men" could pass as a Silverstein song.) As the romp through "Rockin' Robin" and the adaptation of "Saints" into "When the Cubs Go Marching In" attest, the main point of a Goodman performance was having a good time. Goodman, his family, and his close friends knew that he had leukemia years before he died of it in 1984 at the age of 36. Yet a performance like this shows how Goodman got the most out of his life, and how his fans got the most out of Goodman. --Don McLeese
Customer Reviews:
Sound quality could be better.......2007-05-23
I purchased this CD in conjunction with the new biography by Clay Eals (it is MASSIVE! like the phone book! a summer reading project for sure!) I was ready to fall in love from the flat "Sout-Side" Chicago intonations of Earl Pionke introducing Steve. However, I am a mite disappointed with the sound quality. It is hard to hear what Steve says between songs, although the singing and music are quite clear. The song choices were interesting. So many of my favorites are missing, but there are also songs I had never heard before. Steve Goodman was an amazing guy. We were so lucky to have him with us, even for so brief a time.
Also recommended: the DVD Steve Goodman, Live from Austin City Limits, and More. Lots of vintage video and priceless commentary from John Prine, Kris Kristofferson, Nancy (Steve's widow), and more.
Steve Goodman - Live at the Earl of Old Town.......2007-03-17
This is a wonderful recording of what must have been a great series of shows. Steve's infectious manner and enthusiasm come through with flying colors. Some of the songs may not be as technically excellent as the studio versions, but Steve was at his best with a live audience, and the Earl was his home base. For the Steve Goodman afficianado who, like me has pretty much everything Steve ever did, this cd is a welcome addition to the collection..............Chuck Klein
Finally! Better Than Ever - A New Release!.......2007-03-01
Friends I can't say enough about this show and its intelligent laughter.
The glorious guitar of an accurate string flicker filling the smiles in the room. you can feel the aura of the crowd and Steve all as one.
A really beautiful show and one of the best releases to date.
Grand sound that lingers through the corridors of your mind.
thanks for this new release!
always waiting for the next one!

A Must For Steve Goodman Fans.......2007-01-06
Although this was recorded live in 1978, the sound quality is excellent and Steve was at his best in his favorite hometown club with some of his best musician friends setting in. Highly recommended!
Goodman's Energy Flows Again.......2007-01-05
The release provides an excellent example of Steve Goodman's energy and enjoyment in making and interpreting music. He conveys a joy in performing that comes out of this recording. The song selection, such as "Lincoln Park Pirates" and "Three-Legged Man" bring a smile to one's face. He has an interesting reflection on today's debate evolution vs. creation in "The Family Tree". Another interesting social commentary is found in his "Men Who Love Women Who Love Men". This release includes "Old Smoothies", which is a sentimental look at attending the Ice Capades with his grandparents in the 1950's. Something I could relate to having grown up on the Chicago area and seeing the "Smoothies" actually perform - "when the Blackhawks were on the road".

Best of the the popular Copland..........2004-12-26
Here's a great introduction to the popular music of Aaron Copland. When "Fanfare for the Common Man" begins, sparks of recognition will fly for most listeners. This song has been everywhere: presidential inaugurations, the olympics, commercials, movies, etc. Some flatten it as hopelessly clichéd, while others find it moving and inspiring. Copland also reprised it in the finale of his Third Symphony. Arguably Copland's most famous piece, "Appalachian Spring" closes the CD. In between, more great Copland: excerpts from 'Rodeo' (apparently the beef lobby has appropriated "Hoe-Down" as one of their themes); a great vocal rendition of "Simple Gifts" and a large chunk of another of Copland's best known works: "Billy the Kid". The only confusing piece is the "Variations on a Shaker Hymn" from Appalachian Spring when the entire Appalachian Spring is already included. Seems slightly redundant.
Though most of the pieces on this CD were written in the 1930s and 1940s, they tend to evoke the old west. With titles such as "Rodeo" and "Billy the Kid" this shouldn't surprise too many people.
Copland went on to compose more dissonant and twelve tone compositions later on in his career. These obviously weren't as popular with the public in general as the pieces on this CD. Nonetheless, if this disc whets the appetite, a foray into Copland's less popular works will yield much. It will help to expose the totality of Copland's output. This disc only represents a small portion of his work. Regardless, this disc is a great starting point for getting to know one of the United States' best known composers of the twentieth century.
A Great American Album.......2004-02-13
This is a great album representing true patriotic American music. Songs like "Hoe-Down" are lively and energetic and give rememberance to what one can imagine as the true American spirit.
Must have this one..........2002-09-17
I like all types of music, I wanted this album because I liked the song "RODEO" that is used on the beef commercials. This CD has made me into a Copland fan. It has many great songs. If you want a CD that says "I am an American." This is it. I am sending copies to a friend in Bombay and Tel Aviv. This is who I am put to music.

Customer Reviews:
The picture.......2006-12-11
I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

Set in dark, slickened streets and populated by a stellar ensemble cast, this adaptation of Frank Miller's hard-edged, film noir inspired graphic novels plays like comic-book-come-to-lifenot surprising, as Miller is credited as Robert Rodriguez's co-director (with a bit of help from Quentin Tarantino). The soundtrack to this bleak, compelling exercise in pure noir stylism is provided mostly by director Rodriguez, with an occasional assist from past collaborators John Debney (Spy Kids and its sequel) and Graeme Revell (From Dusk Til Dawn). While their largely synth-driven cues tend naturally towards brooding atmospheric soundscapes, their tense electro-rhythms are seasoned with bracing doses of sinewy, sensual sax and dotted with the occasional bongo flourish, details that musically evoke both a shadowy humanity and the film's genre-savvy roots. Also featuring disparate, yet wholly integrated contributions from techno-house savants Fluke (the hypnotic "Absurd") and 20th century Mexican classicist Silvestre Revueltas, it's the sinister flipside to the future-jazz sheen of Vangelis' classic Blade Runner.--Jerry McCulley

trailer music.......2006-08-06
i listened to the servant song and i know everyone said its pretty well known that that is the song they used in the trailer, but if you listen to "broken chairs" by built to spill it really sounds like parts of the trailer music too. and its also a good song. so i would recommend trying that as well!
Great!.......2006-01-17
Now, i loved the movie, but the soundtrack blew me away! all the songs fit the movie perfectly. However, it is missing the instrumental version of "Cells" by the Servants, which plays on the DVD title menu
so, here you go:

sin city.......2005-09-30
Is a very good soundtrack because i think that Robert Rodriguez has made a great choice with the composers and his own musical composition

While the previous reviwer was correct that Cells the trailer song is not on the soundtrack, Servant did indeed create an instrumental version and you can obtain it at this link follow the instructions it is at the Servant website so its legal and its for a limited time only!

Your Welcome ;)
An addendum to "FangsFirst" comment.......2005-09-16
FangsFirst is absoluty correct -- trailer music is almost never on the movie's soundtrack. An interesting additional bit of trivia, however; almost all trailer themes ARE from a movie soundtrack, just from a DIFFERENT movie than the one the trailer is for!
So if you're looking for "Cells" by The Servant (the song from the Sin City trailer), take a look at the soundtrack to Transporter 2. You'll find it along with another song by The Servant. "Cells" does have lyrics to it (which aren't on the Sin City trailer), but it's still a damned good song.
Just thought I'd share that with everybody.

Majestic hymns sung with British accents. A great combination! I haven't noticed any objectionable sounds on my copy.
hymns we sang in church.......2003-02-16
i grew up in a traditional presbyterian church that had a pipe organ. i wanted a cd of many of the hymns that we sang in church sung by a choir and accompanied by a pipe organ. this cd fulfilled my wishes perfectly. the hymns are performed in a very straight-forward fashion with no show-boating or excess flourishes which is exactly what i wanted. this is not gospel music but what i refer to as liturgical music to indicate that it is religious music but not gospel music. i would give it 5 stars but there is a slight hiss. other than that the recording quality is very good.

Terrific vocal talents for Copland's music.......2002-08-08
This second Copland collection focuses on unique talents of veteran performers.
William Warfield lends his voice and his interpretations of Copland's Old American Songs, and he sings them as they were meant to be, not as classical diletantes felt they should be. You have authenticity here.
Martha Lipton likewise contributes an older world charm and charisma to Copland's settings for Emily Dickenson's words.
Carl Sandberg's resonant reading of his own words is worth the full price of this set.
And then the inimitable Oscar Levant's piano treatment of the orchestral pieces...Levant had a wry touch to his interpretations that gave him a voice all his own.
There's much more here, quite a bit that's less than familiar and therefore increases one's familiarity with Copland.
finally sandburg's lincoln portrait.......2001-08-17
For all those like myself who have waited a decade for "A Lincoln Portrait" with Carl Sandburg's narration on CD, here it is finally! Sandburg's heartfelt reading of Lincoln's words is easily the most inspired and inspiring of the legions of others whose voices have been recorded. The orchestration by Kostelanetz also vastly surpasses others. Compare Henry Fonda's reading for example to see a poorly mixed tape where the narrator's voice is overwhelmed by the orchestra.
Wow! Pretty Good Deal.......2001-03-13
I was surprised to find two CDs of such quality being sold for the price of one. It also contained many hard to find Copland works.
Vitebsk is exciting. Strings do much of the work here. The music is very unique to any other Copland works. Definitely here a sample of this.
The Sextet is very interesting. The combination of strings and piano is a prefect balance along with the clarinet doing much of the harmony. It is the same song though as Copland's 2nd symphony, the 'short' one.
Duo for Flute and Piano is fun and happy. The 1st movement fluctuates quite a bit in the feeling but is a very nice combination. The second movement is slightly morbid but the feeling of happy hi ho is not lost. The 3rd movement is light and bouncy and can be described as typical Copland.
Lincoln Portrait is powerful. Though I don't see how it fits on this CD has a rarity or a chamber work. It is the besy Lincoln P. I've ever heard though.
Old American Songs and Poems of Emily Dickinson are not that good though. It's a vocalist and a piano accompanyingthe vocalist. The vocalists are not that good and I felt needed to feel the music a little more. Thomas Hampson and Dawn Upshaw made a CD with these songs which is much better (the only problem is that that CD only has 8 of the 12 Emily Dickinson Songs).
Billy the Kid was a nice way to finish off. It's just a few excerpts played on solo piano. It was interesting hearing the piece performed this way.
The recording quality is okay sometimes and kinda slipping other times. Then again, these are classic recordings for the most part. The skill though of the orchestra and soloists for the most part is that of a high quality. I definitely recommend this CD to any Copland fans out there trying to discover more about Copland. It's a very nicely put together CD and price worthy too.

Album Description
Holiday blues comin' on? Well, put a spike in `em! Here's the zaniest, wildest and just plain sickest Collectors' Choice Music exclusive yet79 tracks from Spike Jones and his City Slickers! These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! Notes and great pictures accompany this 3-CD walk on the wacky side from the greatest novelty band of all time.
Customer Reviews:
Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14
Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

Standard Transcription Collection.......2003-04-12
This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

Fun and unique kids CD.......2007-01-09
We love the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago that created this CD (and the original Wiggleworms CD). They are full of fun kids songs that are enjoyable for parents too. We have been listening to these in the car for three years now and the kids still love them!
My new favorite!.......2006-07-28
I am a Children's Librarian and this is my new favorite CD for storytime! I use the music with babies, toddlers, and pre-k children. The songs are fun-with unique spins on some old classics. The children look forward to the music each week, and love to sing along!
My kid can't get enough.......2006-05-30
My son cannot get enough of this CD. He asks for it every single day. The songs are short, fun, interactive, multicultural (several in other languages), and a great alternative to TV (my 2-year old would rather listen to this than watch Teletubbies!!) It has 42 songs and lasts almost an hour. It is not really obnoxious music and even I enjoy it day after day! Give these Wiggleworms a try!
Best CD of 2005!.......2006-04-05
I have listened to this CD about 100 times (which is amazing because there are 42 tracks!) and I NEVER get sick of it. My daughter loves it too, especially Three Green and Speckled Frogs. There is some amazing Chicago talent on this CD. This CD has become a standard gift for every birthday party we go to. It's a must-buy!
