5 out of 5 stars The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

5 out of 5 stars Great Songs... must have.......2006-07-18

I'm a big pumpkins fan and have been for years. I don't do many reviews, but I felt compelled here just because of how good these songs are. "Today", of course, is a classic pumpkins song, but in my opinion the two b-sides eclipse the single. "Hello Kitty Kat" and "Obscured" are two of my top 10 pumpkins songs in their own right. However, you should skip this and just get the album 'Pisces Iscariot', which has these b-sides and a lot of others. It's a b-sides collection better than most rock bands could ever hope to achieve with their a-sides.

5 out of 5 stars Best B-Sides from any Pumpkins' single.......2005-10-04

"Today" is a great song and a remarkable landmark for the Pumpkins as a successful single and an overall great song to enjoy. This single disc itself, in addition to having "Today", has some of the best B-Sides the Pumpkins ever wrote. "Hello Kitty Kat" should have been on Siamese Dream no doubt. It's a hard-rocker with a sly, catchy chorus worthy of play. And following the shred-fest of that song comes the soothing "Obscured". This is one of my favorite acoustic Smashing Pumpkins songs. It is so heartfelt and emotional. But you can get both of these songs on "Pisces Iscariot", so you should go buy that right now. But regardless, if you are a diehard fan, you should get this.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Single from the SD-Era.......2003-12-29

This is an auditory summary of Pumpkins Siamese-Dream Era Rock/Dream Pop/Indie/Grunge. The three songs are to DIE FOR. No really. You could go spend $14.99 for Pisces Iscariot for the latter two songs, but um if you're running low on cash, or you just aren't harcore enought to sit through that other b-side album, this is for you! Today is a classic mainstream rock song, but yet is still has its induviduality, and does not fade into the category of overproduced-record corp-rock. Hello Kitty Kat is almost punk, seriously! Its got the happy hardcore music with some mildly disturbing lyrics, great song. The last track just rules, a tad mellower though.

This is another pumpkin single filled with groovy photos and artwork! By the Way D'Arcy's sister, Molly, is on the cover, if you didn't know that (but because your a pumpknhead, you knew that :D ).

5 out of 5 stars Utterly amazing!.......2001-12-22

This CD has my three favorite Smashing Pumpkins songs on it. "Today" is my all-time favorite Pumpkins song, it makes the hair on my neck stand up. "Hello Kitty Kat" is awesome, it's one of their better loud songs. Lastly, "Obscurred", which is one of their top acoustic songs ever. If you only buy one Smashing Pumpkins CD in your life, make it this one.

5 out of 5 stars pumpkins rock!.......2000-08-07

as SLICK_CLYDE says the song has a great begining but the afterparts shouldn't be so much defined as loud but their unique heavy metal sensation.the words may depress some by the lonelyness billy implplies but its still cool in many ways. You'd just have to listen to it, and while you,re at that listen to tonight tonight.

5 out of 5 stars might be the best rock beatles tribute album out.......2006-06-16

50 tracks (only about 3 i dislike) of alternative rock covers of beatle songs that retain the spirit of the original songs but have enough variations to make the songs fresh. that's exactly the model of a good tribute album. most of the songs are hard enough to rock, but still pop enough stay beatle-ish.

5 out of 5 stars Where ya been Stan?.......2007-07-08

My freshman year, college roomate was a big Stan Kenton fan. He had this album. This and his album of Stan K's take on Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde" got me hooked on Stan's arrangement style. The energy and diversity of familiar pieces rearranged by Mr. Kenton caused me to look beyond my musical listening comfort zone. My tastes have since broadened to include styles of music I would not have considered had it not been for Stan and his work. I am thrilled that I can finally have my own copy of this fun album on CD! Thankfully, I can't wear out this CD like I did my roomates' vinyl album.

5 out of 5 stars This glorious album.......2005-12-03

Absolutely thrilling, breathtaking performance. One of the most exhilarating records I've ever heard in my whole life, at last reissued on CD. A classic and one ultimately recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Buy this "Today"!.......2005-05-16

I grew up listening to this on vinyl (my father had the album) and I had been waiting desperately for it to come out on CD. I believe this is a great live Kenton CD. The soloists are relative unknowns, but everything Kenton typically brought to the big band arena is here:

Blistering trumpets: Check out what I think is the definitive version of "Intermission Riff" with either Mike Vax or Dennis Noday way up on top. Or the brief, yet effective version of "Take The A Train".

Beautiful ballads: Check out "Interlude" or Richard Torres (tenor sax) on the Kern/Harbach classic "Yesterdays"

Other standout cuts are "Fringe Benefits" and "Ambivalence"; there's even a version of "God Save The Queen". The trademark Kenton humor is in full force as well.

The only negative is that the sound is a little muffled at times, but the music overrides any sonic defects.

5 out of 5 stars Sound Surround Romantic Piano.......2004-04-03

Ronnie Aldrich shows he's still top of his form in these two late 60s and early 70s recordings. The whole LP Two Pianos Today represents 60s romance dutifully plus some surprising dashes of groovin' on Georgy Girl and Something Stupid. On the Soft and Wicked selection, watch out for the beautiful mysterious sound of Last Tango in Paris, and the 'feel good' factor in his interpretation of Clair and Tie a Yellow Ribbon. Five stars for well-crafted performances of 30 years vintage!

    5 out of 5 stars SUPER CD!.......2004-02-24

Do you want a big artist of piano, big orchestra, big sound, big music?. This is the answer. 5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars Great piano albums!.......2004-02-05

These are two more additional great piano music of Ronnie Aldrich and the London Festival Orchestra..now in CD,unfortunately the sound quality of the Soft & Wicked selections are not quite crystal clear as in the LP album..but the music is still really great..perhaps all of his albums can be in the CD format soon! They are just too beautiful to hear over and over again!

5 out of 5 stars A high quality collection of odds and ends.......2002-08-27

The title of this album is at first confusing, until you realise what it's about, then it is self-explanatory. The original Today album (previously released on CD but out of print, yet still available from Amazon.com at the time of this review) was a compilation released in 1971, made up of a couple of hits, some unreleased songs and various other tracks. This compilation was released together with the last of a series of twofers covering Petula's recordings from 1959 to 1971. It is also made up of a couple of hits, some unreleased songs and various other tracks - but not usually the same ones. Hence the title, Spirit of Today.

Among the songs included here are I want to sing with your band (an Australian top ten hit), American boys (an American hit) and Downtown '76 (a South African hit, and a very interesting remix).

The highlight is the final track, Baby it's cold outside, a duet with Rod McKuen. Apparently, Rod was (and still is) a huge Petula fan so it must have been a dream come true for him to record this song with Petula. Surprisingly, this had never been released in Britain prior to it's appearance here, although it had been released in America on a various artists compilation. Originally a duet hit for Johnny Mercer and Margaret Whiting in 1949 (as well as several other versions), this has become a Christmas classic (even though it's not specifically about Christmas) , so could have been included on Petula's Merry Christmas Joyeaux Noel compilation, but wasn't.

Given the nature of the compilation, you might expect it to be below the usual Petula standard, but not so. Apart from those already mentioned, there are many other excellent songs on this CD, which is a worthy addition to any collection of Petula's music.

    Album Description

DFA specializes in a highly complex but richly melodic compound made of equal parts symphonic progressive rock and jazz fusion. Far from being the solo-happy wankfest it might appear to be from the description, the album is a testament to the band's strong ensemble work. The epic compositions, written by drummer Alberto De Grandis and keyboardist Alberto Bonomi, leave plenty of room for improvisation, but hew closely to tuneful outlines. Bonomi and guitarist Silvio Minella weave in and out of each other's virtuosity, creating a lush fabric of rich musical colors that never fails to engage. When either man solos, the break is equally impressive for its restraint as for its skill. De Grandis keeps the rhythm at a constant boil, with his jazzy cymbal work driving the sound as much as the kick drum; bassist Luca Baldassari holds steady, the pole off which the flags fly. "Trip on Metro," a piece that dates back to the group's early demos, shows a subtle Mahavishnu Orchestra influence, while "Pantera," "Caleidoscopio" and "Ragno" perfectly balance the blend of jazz rhythm, classical melody and rock firepower that is the hallmark of Italian progressive rock. Equally impressive and accessible, if this music is merely a work in progress, the final version will be drop-dead astonishing. HIGH BIAS, USA (courtesy of)

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music... Beautiful People.......2002-10-01

Yes, DFA keep on amazing us, caressing and pushing, kicking and licking, taking off for high peaks just before landing like an eagle that has spotted a running white rabbit. In an instant they take our breaths away, they shock us with they technical abilities, very close to perfection, still warm like a motherly womb.

Above all, the reason why DFA play this magical music (that will live on for a very long time) is that they are magic, beautiful people who live simply according to their inner feelings, love, fear, intimacy and honour, pride and brotherhood... DFA is honesty at its best... that is why we are so hooked!

    Long live DFA

DFA performed for the first time live here in the U.S at the annual Nearfest concerts on June 17, 2001 at Lehigh University's Zoellner Arts Center. The group hails from Italy and has quite an international following. This performance was a key factor in elevating their status as one of the premier prog-rock bands in the world in the eyes of the American audience. The responses of the audience show that they were an enormous success. The group is Silvio Minella (guitars), Luca Baldassari (electric bass), Alberto De Grandis (drums, vocals) and Alberto Bonomi (keyboards, vocals).
DFA's music is heavy on the keyboards with a multitude of layering of all the other instruments, which makes for a remarkable listening experience. The separation of each instrument is astounding for a live recording; it's difficult to notice if it's actually live or in the studio. If it wasn't for the dialogue and the crowd's response to the music you would never know the difference. I have to tip my hat to Giampaolo Righetti, the mixing and remastering had a profound effect on this recording. An extraordinary amount of time and effort went into this process, you can tell. The musicianship in this group is quite simply put, out of this world. Most of the music is instrumental. A few of the tracks offer vocals in their native tongue.
"Work In Progress Live" is exactly what it says it is...music that's in a constant state of building and changing. `La Via' is their prog-rock masterpiece clocking in at over fifteen minutes, in fact there isn't a track under six minutes on the entire recording, which is status quo for any good progressive work. This a solid release from start to finish with absolutely no weaknesses whatsoever. Progressive rock doesn't get any better than this, and this live recording could easily set the standard for other groups that are looking to achieve the same results. I can't possibly imagine that a group this good could possibly get any better, but I am sure they will. They will most certainly become legends in no time if they maintain the standards and quality that they set when they play live. Keep your eyes on this group; they are paving a path that others will soon take.

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the BEST live album ever made?.......2002-01-10

I received a promotional package of CD's from Moonjune Records, for review and 'air time', on my two internet radio stations. Well, I opened the large envelope and what do I find? Two of the three CD's are Italian Prog......oh no! The last Italian Prog I listened to was Banco at Nearfest 2001, and to tell the truth, I was not empressed, at all. So, out falls the DFA CD, Work in Progress, recorded at Nearfest 2000....oh no! The people at Moonjune Records were nice enough to send the CD's and info, so I had to listen. WOW! I was blown away from the first track Escher, reaching for the CD cover and info, I read all I could while listening to the rest of the CD. I won't even bother to getting into the the six tracks, there is no stand out, there all GREAT! No, SPECTACULAR!!!!! This is Progressive Rock at its finest. I noticed in the info that that some have called DFA a Fusion band. There are Jazzy moments but, don't be turned off by this, it just adds to the complexity of the music. These guys have the Chops to get the job done! Alone each solo with a masters intensity, together, the word 'Tight' mean anything! This is perhaps the finest live album I have ever heard! If not for the breaks and applause(Serious Applause!), you can not tell its a LIVE album! Its that Perfect! All six tracks are now into rotation on Odd Sky & Sound of Shadows Internet Radio Brodacast.

    5 out of 5 stars A killer live album.......2001-07-29

DFA plays a modern symphonic fusion that draws on many elements to produce a dynamic sound that can be blistering symphonic one minute and quiet and spacey the next. While they can easily blow you away with their intense sound, their excellent compositional skills and sense of dynamics always keeps the music fresh with plenty of breathing room. The proceedings begin with "Escher", a standout track which starts out with a spacey intro that builds into a energy filled piece with great melodies. One of the band's most memorable pieces. "Trip On Metro" is a groovy cut, with a solid bass line and excellent drumming. "Pantera" is a nice and varied piece, with great electric piano in the quieter sections. The epic "Rango" is filled with all the different aspects of the band's sound, building up the intensity and coming down for the relaxed portions. DFA are one of the brightest stars shining in today's murky progressive scene. While great on their studio albums, this band is especially at home in the live element and this performance is certainly indicative of that. This was truly a magical set, and as great as it was to be there, it's just as great to hear it here on CD.
