Despite the bustle of shopping, parties, and eating binges, the holidays should be a time for mellowing out, as Toronto singer Holly Cole seems keen on reminding listeners. Whereas many Christmas albums become showcases for divas to holler their guts out in the name of seasonal cheer, Cole's Baby It's Cold Outside is a very sleepy-eyed and likeable contribution to the genre. (It's also her third Christmas disc, after the 1998 EP Christmas Blues and the Japan-only Santa Baby: Live in Toronto). Cole and her longtime pianist, arranger, and coproducer Aaron Davis have created a set of light, mildly jazzy renditions of holiday standards, including "I'll Be Home for Christmas," "The Christmas Song," and--with the Barenaked Ladies' Ed Robertson making a cameo as vocalist--the title track written by the great Frank Loesser.

The orchestra swells and surges for exuberant versions of "'Zat You Santa Claus" and "Christmas Is," but for the most part, the proceedings are adamantly low-key, giving Cole plenty of opportunity to show off her range without having to compete to be heard. She playfully scats her way through "Sleigh Ride" (accompanied solely by bassist David Piltch), gets low and sultry for "What About Me," and gives soft, delicate performances on "I'll Be Home for Christmas" and "Never, No." The last song was Mary Margaret O'Hara's contribution to Count Your Blessings, a 1994 holiday album also featuring Cole, and its reappearance here is most welcome. Baby It's Cold Outside could have used a few more selections that were equally esoteric--like the Pretenders' "2,000 Miles" from Christmas Blues--but Cole and Davis are to be commended for their smart and subtle approach to some oft-abused songs. --Jason Anderson

Typical Holly Cole - great Christmas album.......2002-10-20

Holly has developed a style all her own - one which relies heavily on covers, but interpreted differently from the original.

So it is with this Christmas album, although Holly has not changed anything really dramatically. Even so, Holly's versions of Baby it's cold outside, The Christmas song, Santa baby, I'll be home for Christmas, If we make it through December and Sleigh ride could never be mistaken for any other.

The other songs are all new to me, though I know that most of them are also covers - for example, Zat you Santa Claus? is associated with Louis Armstrong.

The voice of an angel!.......2006-11-27

I stumbled across this album quite by accedent and it hasn't been off my CD player since. Aled Jones really has the most beautiful male voice I've ever heard. His beautiful renditions of some of the most well known and loved christmas carols, as well as some of the less well known is a delight to the ears. His versions of The Covantry Carol, The Angel Gabriel and God Rest You Merry Gentle men gave me goose bumps and his duet Silent Night sung with Hayley Westenra is really too beautiful for words to do it justice. This album really is not to be missed.

Beautiful, haunting Christmas Album.......2005-11-19

I have to admit to being an absolute sop and say I LOVE CHRISTMAS and Christmas music. I am manic at this time of year. This is one of the most beautiful Christmas albums I have heard. Aled Jones has a beautiful soothing voice and being a traditionalist I love the songs he has chosen. It is worth buying this CD purely for the most haunting versions of the `Coventry Carol' you will ever hear. His duet on `Silent Night' with Hayley Westenra is also magnificent, along with my favourite carol `The Angel Gabriel'. He also sings a duet with himself on the bonus track `O Holy Night', himself as a boy soprano which will take your breath away. If you want a haunting, beautiful and soothing traditional Christmas album don't miss this one because it is a real Gem.

This is a really great album for all fans of smooth-jazz which breathes new life into the oh so familiar christmas carols.Arrangements are inventive in typical Shakatak style embracing latin , fusion , funk and chillout.Great to play at the festive season but also any other time of the year ! A must for all Shakatak fans ....great value and highly original !!!

This album is a must among those who play the guitar, and those who like Christmas songs. Most of the songs are really beautiful, and so contemplative, so introspective, so passionate!!! Eric Johnson's The First Nowell is one of the most beautiful playing I ever heard. It is the perfect idea of Christmas. Steve Morse's Joy To The World is also GREAT!!!
This is a must!!!!! Buy it before you can't find it anymore...

For those who loves interesting guitar arrangements, this is for you! All tracks are rich in details and technique (if you don't believe me, just take a look to the musicians there). I'm quite impressed with the participation of Eric Johnson, the 'Master of Tones', who demonstrates here he's not only a marvelous guitarist, but a great MUSICIAN too.

Excellent holiday music album.......1998-06-24

For anyone that likes guitar music, here is an album worth listening to. It is a fresh spin on some old Christmas songs, performed by various guitarists (mainly from the Rock genre). It is produced by famous rock guitarist Steve Vai and features some great guitar arrangements of popular holiday favorites by some equally great musicians.The most note worthy selections are the creative version of "The Little Drummer Boy" performed by Alex Lifeson (of Rush) and "Rudolph" performed by Kenny Wayne Shepard. The BEST Christmas Album ever.......2005-01-21

Our family was exactly like Jeff Brewers (read his review below) - we owned the Boney M Christmas Album on cassette in the very early 80's and played it over and over again continuously at Christmas. We never got sick of it. This year (2004) we have now lost the tape and Christmas was just not the same so I jumped on the web and found the Album on CD!! I ordered it right away and can't wait to play it next Christmas.

Mary's Boy Child - worth buying the album for just this song.......2004-09-26

I start playing Christmas music right after Halloween, and I have every Christmas album on the market. Boney M's version of Mary's Boy Child is one of my absolute favorites. It has an upbeat tempo but still brings tears to my eyes every time I play it. If you consider yourself a Christmas music aficionado than you must add this album to your collection.

I'm from the fiji island in the south pacific all my life my parents had boney M ,and when i came up to the US i looked for it every were but did not find it only on amazon ,thanks now i have all the collection and the christmas hits .i did not know they had a chritmas album ..its good ..love it... thanks amazon ..what other music shop dont have ,you have it and the price is so low thanks again

My family has been listening to this album(on Cassette because they never released the CD in North America) since the early 1980's. There's no other Christmas Album that even comes CLOSE to enjoyability as this one. We would often just keep turning the Cassette and re-listen to the other side...back and forth...listening to the same songs for hours...THAT'S how good it is!!

I did purchase the Boney M "20 Greatest Christmas Songs" CD because it's sold here in Canada, but it's NOT exactly the same as this album and is missing some songs. Most annoying about the differences is the fact that they use a different version of "Zion's Daughter" on the "20 Greatest Christmas Songs" disc, that is inferior to the one found on this album...it just doesn't have the same beat to it.

I would spend the extra $8.50 for this CD versus "20 Greatest Christmas Songs" for SURE, without a doubt!

Hmmn... this album definitely deserves 7 stars, not 5! We had it when I was a little girl, and I loved every single track. Now I have a son and I would like him to have a taste of it. where is boney m now?
