Duets are tricky, especially when the two people in question are headliners not used to subverting to another. But these two country veterans put together this collection with a love for the music and let their egos get checked at the door. Haggard has always had strong presence, but here he tones down his authority a tad to allow for Nelson's reedy croon to penetrate. Townes Van Zandt's title track became a hit; the sad sack outlaw tale is perfect for two performers who have spent their careers living outside the law. The production by Haggard, Nelson, and Chips Moman is fairly restrained for 1982 country music productions. --Rob O'Connor

I wouldnt expect a Canadian to know what real good country music is... in other words, this CD is worth the buy, I thoroughly enjoy every song on it. Pancho and Lefty especially. Willie Nelson is the man, I really like listening to him.

Willie Nelson has made alot of good music, but Merle Haggard, is defenately the man. Merle has the most powerfull, and at the same time, most smooth voice there is. Merle, is by far, the best vocalist in recorded music history. Throughout his career, Merle has shown his ability to sing in several diferent styles. Merles lyric writing ability is also amazing. He can tell a complicated story in a simple way, that is easy for people to understand, and although telling it simply, the listner is still able to understand the complicated meaning. Merle's songs can differ so much from each other, in vocal style, and sound, that it is impossible to make a judgment of his musical abillity by listening to just one song, or even one album. No matter what type of music a person enjoys listening to, a song or songs have been recorded by Merle Haggard, that they would love, if they ever get the chance to hear it. Many of todays, not only country stars, but stars of other music genres have used merle's style as a foundation for their own. Get this album, but don't stop there. Check out some more of his albums as well.

With both of their careers going into the dumper, these corporate (...) teamed up to attempt to make a commercially succesful album. The result was pure disaster. Merle has finally come to his senses and has realized he is too old for this (...) anymore. (...)

This album will always be best known for the Townes Van Zandt title track, as it should be. That incredible song, perfectly performed by Willie and Merle, tends to overwhelm what is otherwise a very solid album. The remaining songs are not as memorable as "Pancho and Lefty" but all are good and well performed. There are no throwaways here. The entire album is produced in a rather easy going style, as you'll quickly hear with "It's my Lazy Day", which embodies that feeling both musically and lyrically. Willie and Merle's voices also combine better than one would expect.

The Title track is what keeps bringing me to put this CD in my player every morning and every night . The others are great ways to show the talents of these classic sorrow country singers. With Reasons and No Reasons to Quit also filling that jukebox in your mind with a number of good songs to be caught singing.

You will know from a previous review that I deeply admire John Hoskinson, as a man and as an artist. . Yes, people do compare him to the Beatles and Crowded House, and with some accuracy. But it's only because he takes the original sources and elevates them to art. He does things his own way. As any true artist should.

Pancho Fantastico is a very fine CD, and one that people should be awakened to. You'll hear elements of pretty much anything that pop music has evolved in its time. His lyrics range from sweetly sentimental (but never saccharine) to cynical. While the music hews to John's passionate commitment to high quality pop, the arrangements now delve into new waters explored in his first release: horns, srings, Wilson harmonies.

I strictly guarantee that you will love this CD--not just admire it, because that's a given, but love it in the way we grow up falling for songs. Think of a song that connected you to a wildly spinning universe as a kid, and you will likely find a counterpart here. One of my favorite pieces here is "Guaranteed," a lover's lament. I think you will also be delighted by the song "Creepy," which has a McCartneyesque rhythm and a really darkly funny lyric--if we can all recall when pop music was fun, and not weary emo. "We Can Never Be Friends" closes the CD with a song pretty much everyone can feel infused into their lives: lovers who cannot be anything but lovers, even after the initial thrill of connection has faded. It's sophisticated emotionally, and pretty much as from the gut as early solo Lennon songs. People don't write this well anymore. Sure wish I could.

This guy is the real deal. I should add the disclaimer that I consider him a friend. But friendship begins and ends with total disclosure, and I would be doing John a disservice if I did not tell the truth.

Truth being: Fantastic record. Buy it, folks.
