From Amazon.co.uk
With a voice like Stevie Wonder, a production sound that recalls the string-laden, slinky-bass disco of Studio 54, and a penchant for funky dance moves and outlandish hats, Jamiroquai's Jay Kay has successfully managed to straddle the underground and mainstream for the best part of 15 years. High Times brings together 19 of his band's hits to date, ranging from early 90s acid jazz classics "When You Gonna Learn," "Too Young To Die," and "Blow Your Mind," to later successes such as "Canned Heat," "Cosmic Girl," "Virtual Insanity," and on to recent songs from 2005 album Dynamite, such as "Feels Just Like It Should" and "7 Days In Sunny June." There are also two new tracks--the current single "Runaway" and the edgier "Radio," both of which continue the Jamiroquai tradition of mildly euphoric dancefloor disco-soul. Despite sticking to a formula of sorts over the years, the songs on this collection compliment each other well and form an impressive overview of one of the UK's most distinctive bands. --Danny McKenna

Even better than expected!~~WOW!.......2007-06-22
I am so glad I bought this CD with JAMIROQUAI's best hits (and plus some "extra" bonus songs are included).
If you like the sound of a sort of combo "jazz-rock" Cd then this is the one for you. JAMIROQUAI is a great band. It`s hard to truly define their sound, but whatever it is ,... it's GREAT!
As I said before, this band is a combo jazz-rock with a bit of alternative thrown in. The lead singer is AMAZING! The other band players are absolutely amazing too.
If you get this Cd, you wont be able to stop your feet from twitching to their beat. FUN!!!!!!
PS: if you have seen NAPOLEAN DYNAMITE then you will recognize track # 11!!---LOVE IT, and so will you!
One Of The Best Compilations.......2007-06-09
Jay K is a musical genius, and, this compilation cd proves it. My nineteen year old borrowed this cd, to put on his Ipod. That made me feel so cool.
Two new GREAT songs!.......2007-04-22
This review is written for the fans. You have all of the other songs on this album, but why buy the CD? The two new songs are AWESOME! I am especially a fan of "Radio" - it is the sexist tour de force about a threesome ever made. Granted, I am NOT into threesomes, but there is something about Jay singing, "Three's not a crowd, I'm a man, I'm a man". This song totally turns me on. Get yourself into the mindset before listening to it. Then, "Runaway" is just a great song, nothing hidden, no secret messages - just a great song. I can't wait for what they (or just Jay) comes up with next. Yes, you can download the songs "elsewhere", but give Jay and the band the benefit of the doubt and fork out the bucks for this album - it's a winner - and while you're at it, get the video DVD too, it rocks and has some videos that are hard to find. ENJOY!
Amazing Band.......2007-03-12
I first noticed Jamiroquai when MTV was playing the Virtual Instanity video from Traveling Without Moving. I was first blown away by the video itself because I am not the type of person who can watch a video repeatedly unless it is extremely unique. I was secondly surprised because a lot of white singers don't sing like that in America. Jay Kay has one of the most unique and soulful vocals I have ever heard. I was finally blown away by the band itself. After doing some research, I purchased Traveling Without Moving and every album before it. I also purchased every future album. It was interesting listening to how they changed over the years. I still don't understand why America has not embraced this band on a larger scale. This band has given me another outlet of music to listen to outside of Rap, R&B, and Neo-soul. Thank you for a breath of fresh air.
I know you already have all of their songs. . .just buy this anyway........2007-03-10
With the exception of the people who bought "Traveling Without Moving" when "Virtual Insanity" became a mainstream hit, there are very few, "Middle-of-the-road" Jamiroquoi fans. This means that if you're like myself, you probably already own all of their albums. Ergo, you probably already have many or all of the songs on this album. Let me say this however, having all the hits all in one place, on one disc, and even further, remixed is in of itself the reason to buy this album. They also included (I think) three new or previously unreleased tracks. The crappy thing about some 'Greatest Hits' collections is that groups ususally include songs that "they felt" should have been greatest hits, even though they weren't. This album shins that approach. Rather, Jay Kay (lead) demonstrates his connection to his audience by choosing the RIGHT songs for this collection. It rocks.
What's also crazy is that I really can't believe that I've been listening to Jamiroquai for 14 years. Have I gotten that old?
5 Star rating = I promise you will enjoy this product. No regrets.

Spocoli Rules.......2007-07-06
If you thought the movie was good the soundtrack is even better. A good wide range of tune. Takes you back
Awesome, Totally Awesome!.......2006-01-31
"Fsst Times At Ridgemont High" is one of my all time favorite movies ever. I've rarely laughed harder than I did when I saw this all time 1980s' classic.
One of the main reasons I loved it was because of the soundtrack, which I found to be an awesome compilation of music from thst time period. For months I searched for it but wasn't able to find it. I finally found it last night.
I'm so glad I did. Be advised that not every song from the movie is on it, but I think that's inevitable. Besides, I already have "Kashmir", "Moving In Stereo" and "American Girl", and I can do without "We've Got The Beat". But there's some darn good stuff on here. I love Jackson Browne's "Somebody's Baby", a fine piece of early 1980s' soft rock. There's a lot of other great stuff as well, such as Joe Walsh's "Waffle Stomp", Don Henley's beautiful "Love Rules", Quarterflash's "Don't Be Lonely", Sammy Hagar's title song, Jimmy Buffet's "I Don't Know (Spicoli's Theme) and of course Oingo Boingo's "Goodbye, Goodbye".
The songs sound very good, though I'd like to see a new version since next year is the film's 25th anniversary. Still, this will do for now.
One of the finest movie soundtracks of the eighties.......2005-10-26
Fast Times At Ridgemont High (1982.) The original motion picture soundtrack.
INTRODUCTION:
In 1982, the classic film Fast Times At Ridgemont High arrived in theatres. The movie impressed plenty of audiences with its excellent mixture of humor and drama, and it continues to do so to this day. It definitely stands as one of film writer Cameron Crowe's ultimate achievements. But once aspect of the film that certainly should not be overlooked is the music. For the movie, many of the most popular and talented musicians of the day (as well as a few unpopular ones) got together and recorded some songs to be used in the film. The soundtrack, while not as popular as the movie itself, still manages to hold its own in the eye of fans of the music. Let's take a look at the soundtrack, and see how it measures up!
OVERVIEW:
The Fast Times At Ridgemont High soundtrack was released in 1982, around the same time as the film. The collection features all eighteen of the songs that were recorded for the film. It does NOT, however, include the score or songs that existed prior to the film.
REVIEW:
In the eighties, there were a few movies that were nothing short of excellent, and the soundtracks to those movies were no exception. Fast Times At Ridgemont High fits that bill nicely. The sheer cast of musicians featured here is reason alone to check out this soundtrack, even if you're not familiar with the movie itself. The Go-Gos, Sammy Hagar, Billy Squier, Oingo Boingo, and most of the men formerly of the Eagles (as solo artists) are among the musicians who play on the soundtrack. Let's look at each track, and see how each one fares?
-Somebody's Baby by Jackson Browne: Jackson Browne was a big-time pop star in the seventies with hits like Doctor My Eyes and Runnin' On Empty. But after the seventies, he pretty much faded into obscurity. However, he did have one career highlight in the eighties, and that was this song. The pop ballad became the most popular song made especially for the film, and a huge hit for Mr. Browne himself. A great way to kick off the soundtrack.
-Waffle Stomp by Joe Walsh: Here we have a cut from the former James Gang and Eagles member. And for the soundtrack, he serves up his own breed of pop rock. You've gotta love those humorous lyrics. A lot of people think Joe Walsh basically faded away after the Eagles broke up, but this track certainly proves otherwise. It's definitely some of his most underrated work!
-Love Rules by Don Henley: Here's another former Eagle. At this point, Henley's solo career hadn't really gotten launched. It's too bad this song didn't become a big hit, because it really could have given Henley's solo career a jump start. This is an excellent ballad, and it's a shame so many Henley fans, even some of the die-hards, tent to forget about this one.
-Uptown Boys by Louise Goffin: Louise Goffin's primary claim to fame is being the daughter of Gerry Goffin, who co-wrote songs for various artists in the sixties with Carole King (it's not at all uncommon to see pop albums from the sixties penned by Goffin/King.) What the younger Goffin does on this song is priceless - she takes the classic sixties pop sound and combines it with an eighties pop sound - as a result, she sounds almost like a female Marshall Crenshaw. The style fusion works great, and this is an excellent track overall.
-So Much In Love by Timothy B. Schmit: Here we have another former Eagle. If you've heard the Eagles song I Can't Tell You Why, Schmit's vocals will instantly sound familiar to you. Here he creates a tune that sounds like nothing else on the album - something that sounds like a doo-wop and eighties pop combo. The end result is another fine piece of music.
-Raised On The Radio by the Ravyns: Here's a band I had never heard of prior to listening to this soundtrack. What they serve up on this album is a straight-up pop-rock tune with a distinct sound that manages to be similar to other eighties music, and yet totally unique at the same time. After hearing this song, I'm very likely to check out additional work by this band.
-The Love In Your Eyes by Gerard McMahon: And here's another artist I had never heard of prior to my listening to this soundtrack. This is, essentially, an eighties pop ballad - something not at all uncommon in this day and age. Still, McMahon's contribution to the genre is a fine one. It's a solid addition to the soundtrack.
-Speeding by the Go-Gos: Any fan of eighties pop music knows these girls do pop rock with the best of them. And this, the band's contribution to the film, was another fine addition to their catalogue. Like most of the stuff on the soundtrack, it didn't become a hit for them, which is sad, since it is a great song.
-Don't Be Lonely by Quarterflash: Most people seem to only know Quarterflash for their hit Harden My Heart. And before I heard this soundtrack, I was one of those people. With this eighties pop tune, the group proves that they are more than a flash in the pan. The melodic, eighties-flavored pop stylings make for a worthwhile listening that will make you wish the band got more popular.
-Never Surrender by Don Felder: Yer another former Eagle. Don Felder was the guitarist who joined the Eagles in 1974, and took their music in a harder rocking direction. Solo work from Felder is pretty much unknown, and this rocker, back by horns and Felder's awesome guitar riffs, makes for an awesome song. It's a shame he didn't become an accomplished solo artist like most of the other Eagles, because this song definitely shows his potential apart from them!
-Fast Times (The Best Years Of Our Lives) by Billy Squier: Billy Squier. I LOVE this guy - his style of hard rock has never failed to impress me. In fact, this song, is the whole reason I bought this soundtrack! If you're at all a fan of Squier, or eighties hard rock in general, you're going to enjoy this song. I know I did!
-Fast Times At Ridgemont High by Sammy Hagar: If you're a fan of eighties hard rock, then you definitely know this guy rocked like no other. This song serves up the straight-up hard rock you know and love him for, but at the same time it has a unique sound to it, unlike his other works, mostly thanks to the backing instrumentation. Hard rock fans will love this one.
-I Don't Know by Jimmy Buffett: Here's another one of those artists that basically faded into obscurity after the seventies. If you're expecting the typical Buffet ballad of beaches, boats, and getting drunk, you're not going to find it here. Truly, the song is undeniably Buffett, but here he tries his hand at eighties pop rock. Surprisingly, the end result is very good! It's just a shame it never shows up on his hits collections.
-Love Is The Reason by Graham Nash: Another forgotten seventies artist shows up on the soundtrack. In his heyday, Graham Nash was a musical genius whose popularity was only exceeded by the quality of the music he could create. His popularity had taken a hit in this era, but he still manages to perform an excellent song. It will definitely bring you memories of Our House, the ballad he did back in the days with David Crosby and Stephen Stills.
-I'll Leave It Up To You by Poco: Yes. Here we have ANOTHER band that the era had all but forgotten. Poco's contribution here is a far cry from what they did in the seventies and gained their fame for initially. However, sometimes a change is for the best. The band's attempt at eighties pop is actually a surprisingly good one! One of their most underrated musical workings.
-Highway Runner by Donna Summer: Donna Summer is one of the more obscure artists on this compilation, being that she was widely remembered for being a disco artists with her hits like Hot Stuff and Bad Girls. Here she tackles a new genre - hard rock. On the song, she actually sounds a lot like Pat Benatar. I never thought someone like Summer would ever do hard rock, but what is even more astonishing is how good her attempt at the genre is! Don't overlook this one!
-Sleeping Angel by Stevie Nicks: Even after her Fleetwood Mac days, Stevie Nicks remained a successful musical artist. A little known fact about her career is her contribution to this soundtrack - something that should definitely be more well-known than it is. This is an awesome rock ballad, as only someone like Nicks could do.
-She's My Baby (And She's Outta Control): By Palmer/Just: Here's one of those artists I had never heard of prior to hearing the soundtrack - but I was impressed nonetheless. It's straight-up rock with an eighties pop vibe thrown in for good measure. Hard to put in words, this song is. You've gotta hear it to appreciate it.
-Goodbye Goodbye by Oingo Boingo: Rather than the weird eighties pop stuff we're used to Oingo Boingo doing, here they try their hand at rockabilly stylings, not unlike those of the Stray Cats. And they actually do this pretty well! It makes you wonder how the band would have fared if they'd none more songs like this. It's a solid way to finish off the soundtrack.
Overall, these songs are among the finest eighties pop tunes ever released, every bit as good as the excellent film they were featured in. If you liked the film, the soundtrack will be a worthwhile purchase. Just be warned - it DOES NOT feature songs that were featured in the film but existed prior (Kashmir by Led Zeppelin, Moving In Stereo by the Cars, We Got The Beat by the Go-Gos, etc.) Even if you haven't seen the film or weren't too crazy about it (and you shouldn't fall into either camp there), consider checking out this soundtrack if you're into pop-rock of the eighties. All of these songs are great. It's one of the best film soundtracks ever released.
EDITION NOTES:
This album was issued on CD in the middle of the nineties, but was only released on CD once. And sadly, the CD version seems to be fading from store shelves. Hopefully the record company will reissue it sometime. And if a reissue is done, hopefully it will featured remastered sound and the missing songs that weren't made exclusively for the film as bonus tracks. Until then, you'll have to hunt down the existing version.
Yes there was an 80's BEFORE Madonna.......2005-08-25
Although I could take or leave the movie itself, this sountrack is a great recap of the early 80's.
Tracks feature some groups who back in 1982 were riding high on the charts, and probally thought that they would be around forever such as the Go Go's (Speeding), Quarterflash (Don't be Lonely), Oingo Boingo (Goodbye, Goodbye), and The Ravyns (Raised On The Radio), as well as 80's icons such as Sammy Hagar, Joe Walsh and Don Henley.
The big hit from this album belonged to Jackson Browne with Somebody's Baby, proof that he can deliver a great non-political pop song.
Two "from the vault" tracks also delivered sales to this album, and they are Stevie Nick's Sleeping Angel (later to appear on at least one of her compilations), and Donna Summer's Highway Runner from the then unreleased rock/new wave orientated album I'm A Rainbow (released in full in 1996).
"Never Surrender" your love for the music of your High School & College Years!
Nooooo!!! They Forgot..........2005-07-27
Kashmir by Led Zeppelin! One of the best songs in the movie was for some reason excluded from the soundtrack. But other than that, a great album.

Customer Reviews:
Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04
This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!
Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12
This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!
Frank's view.......2006-08-19
This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Customer Reviews:
What the funk!?.......2007-06-14
Great listen-through. Funky to chilled and back again. Great continuity w/o being monotonous. Give a listen and you'll find Jamiroquai's best grooves are the ones that didn't get much air play. Good stuff.
The Import is worth the extra 20 bucks........2007-02-14
So I had to buy the import with the remixes opposed to just getting the single CD. Its not like I don't have all of Jamiroquai's other 6 cd's but what they don't have are "Deeper Underground", "Runaway", and "Radio", and the Remixes on CD 2 of course. And if you listen closely, some of the songs are a little different than the original CD recordings. "Space Cowboy", for example, is the Video version, which is found on their "High Times" DVD. For all the True Jamiroquai Fans, go out and get the Import and spend the extra money. Its worth it!!!! Love u Jay....
The start of something big...hopefully!.......2007-02-06
As a previous reviewer has stated, this is JMQ's last bit with Sony. I wish 'em all the luck in the world. They've got to be one of the best bands on the planet! This is a great CD set and if you're a fan, the double CD is a must! JMQ, wherever you go, I will follow!
Funk U Sony, sez J.......2006-10-25
With this double Compact Disc, Jamiroquai will say goodbye to Sony Music for good and move to another label. He already created a label called Long Lost Brother but it collapsed a few years ago. I wish him luck in his endeavours, but let's be honest, without the marketing structure of Sony Music it's going to be hard for him to sell his new material. My advice? Move to Universal Music Group, so he can share the payroll with James Brown, GAP Band and Stevie Wonder.

Album Description
This is the Fishbone album fans have been waiting for. Shot and recorded in digital 24 track at the world famous Melkweg Theatre in Amsterdam, Holland during the infamous High Times Cannabis Cup. This is Fishbone at it's most inspired. They are a well oiled Punk/Ska/Funk factory, this being the last night of a 14 week grueling American and European tour. The smoke filled venue filled with thousands of blissed Fishbone fans shakes with the thunderous grooves as the band plays songs that span their 20 year career. The DVD is 1 hour and 20 minutes.

closest to the real thing..........2005-11-30
As great as Fishbone's studio albums are, this is one act that has always thrived and amazed live, where their character can shine in full effect. After all how could a mere stereo audio recording do justice to the full-frontal assault created by the beyond-colorful personalities of the dudes in Fishbone? So here we finally have a CD AND DVD together for one low price. The sound is awesome, just try it w/headphones (or those earbuds you probably use for everything..). AND you get to SEE the band putting it down live. Norwood, the killer bassist always said that they just tried to do what P-Funk said and "take it to the stage" and they do! You MUST check this out...and if you're new to Fishbone then I have mad envy for you. you're in for a great trip...
The Indie-label Struggle.......2005-10-31
Fishbone are legendary...let me just begin by saying that. There were ranked most exciting live act by Dappa Like Zappa; They have influenced countless bands and hip-hop acts, befriended many more bands and such...i mean come on, its undeniable! After dealing with a bunch of garbage from Columbia, and dealing with legal whoas, and lack of promotion, they eventually moved to their own record label. Now this album was done through High Times Magazine and they simply didnt do the band justice! Dont get me wrong, its a great album, but thanks no thanks to High Times...the recording quality lacks and there are type-o's on the back cover...granted, being an indie band, their stuff is bound to be a bit ruff around the edges-and like i said, the album (especially teamed with the DVD) is still great...just not as great as it could've been....ah the whoas of independance. Furthermore, the DVD doesnt do justice to Fishbone's live performance...Fishbone is typically full of energy and motion, and on this DVD they're more layed back...but that is undoubtably do to the MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF POT BEING SMOKED BY EVERYONE!!!! BUT...the crowd shots are tight...there are people EVERYWHERE...and a dancing section in the front where some fans are gettin down and there's this person wearing a psychedelic light outfit...its great! AND in all the album/dvd combo is a great bye (but wouldnt be a good purchase for someone new to Fishbone).
Stoned delight in the stoners' capital.......2005-09-30
No Fishbone fan can afford to be without this CD/DVD recording of what proved to be one of their last concerts - at the High Times Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam.
From Angelo Moore's bizarre opening rap, to the sonic blitz of "Sunless Saturday" and the turbo-charged skank of "Cholly", this is pure killer vibes.
How could a band so talented be treated so shabbily by the music industry? Moore's bitter rant, which closes the DVD version, spells out just how used and abused Fishbone were.
Tragic. But at least we have this souvenir of their greatness.
Great Music, Great DVD, a must for fishbone fans!!!!.......2005-09-21
Fishbone is red hot!!. Fishbone plays a great mix of ol' an new songs to skank and go nuts to!! Over 70 minutes of music. Great quality sound, recommended for music fans with eclectic taste!! If you like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bad Brains, 247 spyz, Living Colour, Sublime, They Might Be Giants, Weapon of Choice, you are gonna love fishbone!
Fishbone rocks live.......2005-08-31
Great live cd. Of course fishbone is always great live but the best part of this cd is you get a dvd of the concert as well. It's like getting two for the price of one which is great. I didn't even know it came with a dvd when I ordered it so it was a great suprise to get that one top of the cd. A must have for any fishbone fan.

The Original Slim Shady.......2007-04-03
Back in the late 90's, a white rapper emerged from the underground with a high pitched voice and a don't give a **** attitude. His lyrics were a lot different from the standard hip hop fare, and were often shocking and controversial, releasing his untamed Id on listeners. But as much as his raps shook people, they connected with them too. He became an icon, beloved around the world and changed rap forever. That rapper's name was...
...well, it was Eminem. But this is the debut album of Cage, an early rival that claimed, not unjustifiably, that Eminem had ripped off his style. Back when Cage released his first single, the incendiary "Agent Orange", Eminem had been a positive, squeaky-clean rapper. After Cage's record broke, it became clear a white rapper could make up for not being a gangsta by spinning crazy fantasies of drug use and cartoon violence. Eminem's next release, the breakthrough Slim Shady EP that sealed a deal with Dr.Dre, sounded a lot like Agent Orange, only with more humor.
In a way, Eminem's "Slim Shady" character is a more mainstream, funny version of Cage. So it can be a little surprising hearing Eminem's original inspiration. Cage is arguably not as good a rapper as Eminem technically. Unlike Eminem, who crafted raps like "Stan" and "Just the Two of Us" into long narrative stories, Cage's raps from the same time period usually sound like random free association, with one line having no bearing on the last one. Cage later confessed that the raps on Movies For The Blind were written while he was on drugs. It shows.
Cage has since cleaned up his act and quit hard drugs, and started writing
more confessional songs (You can hear the new grown-up Cage on his classic last album, Hell's Winter, and his new album Depart From Me, due 2007). But this album showcases him in his youth, at his nastiest and vitriolic. An X-rated, no-joke version of Slim Shady isn't for everyone, but if it sounds like your thing, Cage is one of the best, and a true artist at conveying what he feels, as creepy and black as those emotions are. Highly recommended.
Vision for the Ears.......2005-12-08
Although I personally am not a huge fan of the other artists in Cage's label, to me, he is a gem hidden in the rough. Cage is extremely creative, clever, has a great ear for beats, and then meshes with the beats perfectly. The topics of this cd may not be in everyone's favor, but that one of the points he is making. Each time I listen to this disc I come up with another reason I like it. Great story lines. Amazing samples. It even makes me laugh at times. "..stuck the canister under my jacket like a lucky gun.. sir you can't leave with that! b**** this my f****ing son!" / "I'm so homesick I miss mom's fallopian tubes!"
yeah ,thats the ticket.
classic.......2005-12-05
this is the best of rap period, nothing further needs to be said. any emcee, famous or not, is as of yet unable to match the verbal technique, production, or hardness of this album. i listen to movies for the blind on a daily basis.

"agent orange" is the highlight on this one 4 sho...
and as for tha haters that write these stupid reviews...most of yall dont even know jack about hiphop, so why even make a review about an artist you know NOTHING about?
as of now, cage is signed to definitive jux for his new record, HELLZ WINTER, which will be released sept 20th....
If ur new to cage, get this one first b4 hellz winter....
Dont listen to the bad reviews........2005-08-10

Even electronic music's most-ardent fans understand that the ghost in the machine isn't conjured as a soulful or spiritual vibe. That comes by bringing in elements from more traditional styles. Understanding this, Turkey-born and Canada-based Mercan Dede intertwines thoughtful down-tempo programming with Sufi devotionals to create an imaginative hybrid that honors both styles. This two-disc effort, Dede's fourth release, includes an eight-part dance piece and a second disc of live performance featuring Dede and his group Secret Tribe. Not your average dance music, "Nar" is filled with impressionistic and moody soundscapes colored with Dede's ney (flute), jazz bass, violin, ambient electronics and, occasionally, devotional lyrics. "Seyahatname" is a more upbeat version of the same format with the band adding an emotional human imprint upon the tremendous ebbs and flows programmed by Dede. Earthy and inspirational, hip and ancient, Sufi Traveler is a voyage to modern Turkey that ably reconciles the past with the present and the future. ---Tad Hendrickson

mercan dede and the sufi techno mix.......2005-02-11
I have been listening his albums since a long time and he really performs his philosophy of 'counter points in sufism where the idea is everything in the nature exists with its counter points. here techno and tradiitonal rythims create excellent harmony out of counter points'
Astonishing! Music for the Soul........2004-10-12
Hearing a snippet of this album on NPR was enough to make me want to hear it in its entirety. This is astonishing music; relaxing and exhilerating, new and ancient simultaneously. Having been fortunate to travel to Turkey, I find this CD very evocative of the magic that is Turkey! Buy this CD today. You'll be listening to it for years. "Feed your head."

Album Description
The self-titled debut album from A Cricket In Times Square proves the band to be masters of the epic noise-enveloped rock song form. With ethereal vocals encircled by competing yet complementary guitars (clean melodic lines vs. power-psych-fuzz), the Seattle-based quartet's songs confront post-adolescent angst, ennui and frustration through plaintive lyrics and episodic instrumental tension. With elements reminiscent of the finest works by Echo & The Bunnymen, Dinosaur Jr., Bailter Space and Galaxie 500, A Cricket In Times Square parallels other current acts like Interpol and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - paying homage to the forerunners of its sound while verifying a unique identity as an important new band. Featuring original artwork by the band, this debut was mastered by Mark Guenther (Death Cab For Cutie, The Posies). A Cricket In Times Square will tour the upper West Coast in October/November, followed by a national tour in December/January.

One of the best of 2004.......2005-01-14
I have made it something of a policy to not review anything I do not absolutely love. There's so much crappy music to hate. Why not simply tell people what's good? It's a lot less time-consuming.
So this album has gotten good reviews from all but one of the publications that have reviewed it thus far. Amongst those who enjoyed this album were the highly respected Magnet magazine and the notoriously crochety and unforgiving Pitchfork (quite a feat-they despise this genre of rock). So what does it sound like?
The songs are generally comprised of very echoy Tom Verlaineish vocals with walls of eerie reverberating guitar sounds. The music has a mysterious and supernatural aura about it. In that way it is similar to Lift to Experience's "Texas-Jerusalem Crossroads", but of course, this does not approach that album's epic spiritual heights. Instead, the subject matter is more traditional fare, as in the opener, Careless, which drones on in the most pleasantly spacey way for several minutes while the singer tries hard to convince us that he doesn't care about anything. And then...the the song simply explodes with all of the frustration that his voice made you suspect was hidden beneath the surface the whole time. The music is at turns bizarre, haunting, lulling, bombastic, and gorgeous. You will want to see A Cricket in Times Square live after hearing this album (I suspect that earplugs might be necessary to keep from rupturing something). I'm still anxiously awaiting my chance. Until then, I can marvel at this dizzying work of art (the cover says it all) and this band, who with the Ponys share the title of best new band of 2004.
God Awful!.......2005-01-05
I got a free copy of this.
It's possibly the worst thing i've ever heard.
The singer could seriously have the worst voice in all of history!
hey guys, lay off the effects pedals and try to write a decent song.
stay as far away from this as possible.
worth the risk.......2004-12-24
I know there are no samples to listen to, but this album is worth the risk. If you enjoy the raw, breathy atmoshere of Joy Division's "Decades", or the guitar moxie of Kevin Shields and David Siteck, or the smooth, British vocals of Ian McColloch, I think you will really like this album. One of my top 40 albums of this year-- which was a very good year, in my book.
