I Want to Live.......2007-04-11
The title set me back as I thought of the sad ending to his life..but still beautiful music
The best!.......2007-01-05
John Denver speaks for himself--his music is great.
The merchant sold me a perfect condition CD at a good price. Everything about the transaction was perfect.
Extra special.......2007-01-01
In 1981 I was in a terrible depression. Taking it easy didn't work, medication didn't work, and worse I didn't know why I was so miserble. My father knew how much I loved John and to cheer me up he bought me this on vinyl along with "Some Days Are Diamonds", both of which I have on CD. I don't know what it was about "I Want To Live" but I played it over and over and recovered. None of John's other albums have had as much impact as this album. John, if you're looking down from where you are now, I owe you much thanks bringing me back to life with this extra special work of yours.
Oldie but Goodie.......2006-11-10
I bought this after a very long search ...and because of one song (My Dearest Esmerelda). I'd had the cassette many years ago and wore it out. Now that I have the CD, I remember how many other great songs there are on the "album." I'm a big fan of Denver's older stuff and this is a great purchase.
One of my Favorites!.......2005-06-13
John Denver's 1977 release "I Want To Live" is one of my all time favorite albums by my all time favorite singer/songwriter. I concur to what others have written that this album would have been a superior follow up to the smash hit Windsong rather than the album Spirit. After the death of Elvis Presley, John Denver inherited the core members of his band, phenomenal guitarists James Burton and keyboardist Glen D Harding. They provided John with a very polished sound. The overall tone of this album, although dominated by guitars and without a reliance on orchestration, is a comforting mellow smooth texture of easy listening music. The new band enabled John to step away from his folk and country roots to a more contemporary sound. Although in the future John Denver would move too far from that traditional formula, in my opinion, that is not the case with this CD.
The album opens with "How Can I Leave You Again?" a beautifully written sorrow filled ballad John wrote after having to leave Annie to begin filming the movie "Oh God!" Although it only went to number 44 on the pop charts, it reached number 2 on the Adult Contemporary charts. This was followed up the same chart by "It Amazes Me" an upbeat song of celebration which reached number 9. The title song, which John wrote during his involvement on the Presidential Commission on World and Domestic Hunger, reached number 10 on the Adult Contemporary charts and its message of the preciousness of life displays John's tremendous vocal range. The CD also contains one of my favorite songs that John ever wrote: "Singing Skies and Dancing Waters." It is song about faith and renewal and the places where one can see evidence of the Divine. The song "Tradewinds" could have come from the pen of Jimmy Buffett and is a mellow homage to just relaxing on a tropical beach. "To The Wild Country" is another song about renewal. This time John weaves a poignant ballad about conservation of the land with finding restoration in the wilderness and mountains of Alaska. "Druthers" is an upbeat country/blues number that has grown on me through the years. The remainder of the CD is filled with songs John Denver covered from various friends of his. "Ripplin' Waters" was written by Jimmy Ibbotson of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, "Bet on the Blues" was written by Tom Paxton, The great ballad about social protest, "Thirsty Boots", was written by the brilliant folksinger/songwriter Eric Anderson. "Dearest Esmeralda" was written by long time friend and collaborator Bill Danoff. The cover tunes, plus John's original compositions, combine to create one of the best albums John ever recorded during his illustrious career.

Customer Reviews:
If only it was the whole show ..........2007-04-03
I agree with virtually everything the other reviewers of this CD have said, but I'd like to add the following: It is a CRIME that RCA did not see fit to release the entire show on CD!!! That's the only reason this CD does not receive five stars from me.
When this concert was originally issued on LP many years ago, it contained only 12 songs. And when it was originally issued on CD, it was an import in the U.S. and still contained only 12 songs. But when that CD version apparently sold fairly well, RCA decided to reissue it domestically in the U.S. and add a few more tracks. What they added was "Today," "Calypso" and "Me and My Uncle," as one of the other reviewers stated, plus Denver's introductions of his band. That gave it a total of 16 tracks.
But given the fact that Denver never played under two hours on any of the occasions I saw him in concert, I feel certain that even with the additional songs, only about half the show is on this disc. So why didn't RCA put out the whole thing on a two-disc set when they reissued it? Who knows? SO HOW ABOUT IT RCA? COULD YOU PLEASE ISSUE A DELUXE EDITION OF "LIVE AT THE SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE?" As one of the other reviewers stated, with the accoustics at the SOH, this might have been a once-in-a-lifetime show.
Several years ago, you put out a deluxe edition of "Waylon Live" by Waylon Jennings. It was originally a single, incomplete disc when it came out on CD the first time, then you put it out again on a double-disc set, which is AWESOME. SO PLEASE DO THE SAME FOR JD at the SOH!!!!
I was fortunate enough to obtain a video copy of an outdoor concert Denver performed in Sydney later in this same 1977-78 tour of Australia. Naturally he has the same band and orchestra. The picture quality is not that great, given the digital age we live in, but it is nice to have.
Apparently that show was originally broadcast on TV in the Land Down Under. The show is more than two hours long and Denver performs many of his hits and album cuts from that period that aren't available on the other live albums/CDs mentioned by my fellow reviewers.
It also would sure be nice if that show could be dug out of the vaults and issued on DVD as well with the sound and picture cleaned up for the digital age!!! Perhaps it could be done in memory of Denver, who was killed 10 years ago this year (2007) as this is being written.
SO HOW ABOUT IT RCA AND DENVER HEIRS?????
But until that happens, this CD is well worth having.
John Denver in Concert.......2006-07-26
This is an excellent concert. This shows his humor and his excellent musical talent. It even contains his flaws when his voice cracks occasionally which just shows that no one can always be perfect. This is a must for all John Denver fans. He always shows his best when he's in concert. I've been to many of his concerts and they are the most memorable and most fun concerts I've ever been to. It's just fabulous!
A Great Live Album.......2006-07-04
I really enjoy this album, I really do. Live albums make you feel like you are there and they can be very personal, unlike a studio album. It is too bad that the record execs have not seen fit to release more albums of John Denver performing live.
Right from the beginning intro with John saying, "relax and ease back in your seats" you know that John is pleased to have the audience with him.
All of the tracks here are well performed and arranged. Looking For Space, a favorite of mine, is slowed down and caressed by John's voice and the band. The entire album is filled with favorites of JD fans.
Listen to the consumer Mr/Ms Record Exec, give us more albums like this of John Denver live in concert.
John Denver's best CD.......2003-08-15
If you like John Denver, this is his best CD. It was recorded to be a CD and the concert was at the Sydney Australia Opera House- imagine the acoustics! It is too bad the other songs he sang that night were not put on a second CD.
Live at the Sydney Opera House.......2002-10-10
I inherited this album from my father on vinyl and over more than 20 years, I've worn it out. I had been trying unsuccessfully to obtain a new copy for a while. Surprisingly, for a concert recorded in Australia, the cd isn't released here. It was a pleasant find to see it available at [Amazon.com].
I wanted it mainly for John's version of an Oz folk song, Moreton Bay. This is a fine rendition, very poignant.
John is in good form and obvious good humour on this night, the live album is recorded in a single venue and has a cohesive quality and great mood. All the songs sound better than the studio versions, although I prefer my music live, which colours my view.
A must for any John Denver fan.

Classic John Denver.......2007-04-14
This sixteen-song set of some of John Denver's greatest hits is probably one of the best live recordings he has done. He manages to bring out the magic of each song and never falters. Unlike most live albums that lack the clarity or depth of studio albums, this collection sounds crisp and vital due to the SACD format. It sounds as if John Denver is literally in your room. The guitar work is as crystal clear as well. Indulge yourself. This is a classic album.
The Best of John Denver.......2006-11-04
This is a great CD of the best known John Denver songs. I owned this CD before but it got lost and was glad to be able to find it again. The commbination of great music and live show makes this an enjoyable CD.
Great live show, and fine songs........2004-02-03
John Denver has never been one of my favourite singers/songwriters but this is really pretty special.I bought it because it was an SACD and I've read good things about this SACD. Well the concert seems to have been one of those events that happens by chance to get all the right things going for it at once. His voice, atmosphere and recording are all of the highest scale. The songs are catchy and inofensive. This event was lucky to happen when it did as he died in 1997 and this is the next best thing to a live concert. For music I give it 90% and recording 90%.
Stereo SACD: No Multichannel.......2003-10-13
This is a great performance. My review is mostly based on the fact that this is a stereo SACD, not multichannel. I am learning more about SACD every day, but was very disappointed that it is only presented in stereo.
Great Live reccccording Of John's Hits!.......2002-09-10
This is a wonderful compilation of live versions of John Denver's greatest hits even as he was continuing to make them. . Here we see the monster hits that propelled him into amazing popularity and superstardom in the early 1970s. In his heyday no one was outselling his albums or out-booking John for concert appearances, and considering the incredible talents on the scene at the time, that is a pretty good indication of just how popular he was, and just how universal John Denver's appeal was. No one else sang of the wide-open possibilities and seemingly limitless prospects for a good life awaiting those who would free themselves from the bonds that confined them and just dare to soar along with him in the wild open spaces.
All the tracks here are terrific, from "Take Me Home, Country Roads", the breakthrough country-pop hit that launched him onto the public stage, to "Rocky Mountain High, his paean to appreciating the beauties of nature and the natural life. He, more than any of his contemporaries, actively caught the public's imagination regarding the wonders of the natural environment, and in a time when environmental concerns were splashed all over the headlines and the evening news, John's vision of popular concern for and stewardship of the natural world was immensely important. I love all the songs here, including "Starwood In Aspen", "Rhymes And Reasons ", "Sunshine On My Shoulders", " The Eagle And The Hawk", and my own special favorite, "Poems, Prayers, And Promises". This album represents a wonderful overview of the early work of John as he thrilled a whole generation with his own perspective of a meaningful life lived in the natural splendor of nature. I know you will enjoy this live performance of many of his hits as well as all the other three of his greatest hits albums. Far out!

Good Show , Bad Filler.......2007-06-25
A wonderful show to include in this series. Lots of good jamming and interaction. Jammin' is on the funkyside which can get repetative at times, but they manage to keep in interesting . However the 28 minute Wolfman's Brother filler isCRAP!!! I wonder why they choice to include this crappy jam. kinda makes ya think doesn't it
Epic.......2007-05-26
I simply cannot get enough of this album. Oh, how I wish I had been in Denver that night! The curious mix of chemicals, the high altitude, the mystery and wonder of late autumn... I'm sure they all contributed to the musical greatness of the evening. The first set alone should be enough to convince any phan worth their salt to post a five star rating. Many other reviewers have raved about the version of Ghost on the first disc, and I have to agree that it is perhaps the finest that Phish has ever played. But Tweezer takes the cake for me. A muted, "feedback-ey" entry is followed by a full eighteen minutes of interesting and imaginative funk. Even after the 50-60 times that I have listened to this song, it still gives me shivers! The second disc shines with many lovely little nuggets of sonic beauty. A solid and highly enjoyable DWD kicks things off. The next few tracks exhibit the band's newly found "less is more" style, particularly with the Johnny B. Goode > Denver Jam. Listeners will also delight in a sparkling YEM on disc three, which ranks right up there with the version from A Live One (12/7/94). This recording is a shining example of the heights that were reached during the cowfunk years of 97-98. Enjoy.
The definitive 97 funk show.......2007-04-13
This is possibly the best of the funk shows. Long, fluid jams throughout. Reba is always great, and here the band really shine. Ghost is a masterpiece. Probably the definitive Ghost and one of the best jams ever. Set two is solid the whole way through. The so-called "Denver Jam" is the quintessential Phish funk jam. All four are just on fire. The YEM is simply extraordinary. Only a couple of YEMs can really compare with this one, and though it doesn't have the virtuoso guitarwork on 12/7/94 (which was later put on the compilation "A Live One"), the band are working completely together, an eight-handed mind, as they say. Great vocal ending and they finish the show with a perfect Character Zero. The filler is top shelf too, with a Wolfman's Brother that could have justified its own release. This, along with volumes 4 and 18, is one of the absolutely essential releases in the series. Beyond those, get New Year's Eve 1995 and you have a nice collection of the best of Phish live.
Solid show.......2006-10-16
This is a nice set from the band's "cowfunk" period, exhibiting the sound--then in its embryonic stage of development--that would characterize Phish for many years to come. This particular take of "Tweezer" is a fine example of the band's newfound less-is-more philosophy of improvisation. "Tweezer" is followed by an inspired, albeit somewhat conventional, version of "Reba." "Ghost" is clearly the show's centerpiece, lasting for over 20 minutes and showcasing the band's telepathic interplay. The band also soars on numbers like "Down with Disease" and "You Enjoy Myself." This release does contain some flaws, however, such as the blues jams in the middle of disc 2. Furthermore, disc 3 contains an utterly self-indulgent reading of Wolfman's Brother (check out Slip Stich and Pass for a more focused version), which ebbs and flows through many themes, none of which are very compelling, and quickly becomes a tedious listen. Overall, though, the show's stronger moments more than compensate for these slip-ups.
this show is awesome.......2006-04-26
absolutley flawless, hands down best first set, phish is definatly gettin funky at this show, probably the best gost, best reba, and best tweezer ive herd in a while, you cant go wrong with buying this live phish album

Looking forward for more to come!.......2003-05-30
Vitamin D is a really talented DJ. I've seen him spin all over Colorado countless times in the last 10 years. It used to be he was opening up for DJs we were going to see...but in the end, we were always looking forward to the next night out in Denver that he'd be headlining. In addition to being a great DJ, he's a also a great guy who was fundamental in helping develop the underground music scene in Boulder and Denver.
As for this cd, I like it alot. There are definitely high and low points for me, but overall it's just a really good, bangin' house mix that keeps my head nodding non-stop. The mix of the Pound Boys' "Betty" is the single best pick I heard last year...everyone I play if for just flips. Definitely my favorite overall.
Like many DJ discs I have, this one doesn't fully do justice to Vitamin D's talents as a DJ. I've seen him spin tech house sets that have no equal, anywhere! Still, it's a great "debut" release (so-quoted because of all of the other stuff he put out prviously on his own label 'Daisy Age' and who knows what else). I'm really looking forward to more realeases from Vitamin D in the years to come. Do yourself a favor and pick this one up.
Performance Comment.......2002-05-28
I saw Derick in Toronto when I went up there late april. His set was amazing. I was totally glued to the tables to catch a glimps of any unseen tricks. I'm a local dj myself, therefore I know what I'm looking for in a set. Vitamin D sure knows his stuff. Well anyhow, I would just like to comment that he is a great performer. As for the cd, I haven't heard it yet, but I just purchased it myself. Peace:
Dj Vitamin D is Amazing.......2002-04-19
One word..........Amazing.
One of the US's best Dj and producer. His natural talents shine all over this mix. His selection of tunes is a strong indication of his musical depth. One ear to the ground and the other to the stars. World Class. Supreme talent. Keeping the future coming fast and around the corner.

Excellent Live Album BUT...........2002-11-08
BUY THE U.S. RELEASE INSTEAD! It contains extra tracks from this wonderful concert" "Today," "Calypso," and "Me and My Uncle." I give this import only three stars because the U.S. release is more complete and easier to find.
John Denver : Live At The Sydney Opera House.......2000-05-01
John Denver is my top favorite singer. After several albums I have found that this album is the best among others. Lively, actively, funny and impressive especially to the participation of his fans in the concert. I think of him when listening to his conversations in this concert album.
The Best of All the Live Albums........2000-02-26
I have in my collection every album, tape and CD that has been released. This is fresh, funny, and symphonic. WOW! This was recorded back in the seventies and I just discovered last week. What a find! Thankyou Amazon.com. Truly one of the finest albums by one of America's favorite sons.
The Essential John Denver.......1999-10-31
What a joy it was to sit back and drink in this wondrous concert that was done at the height of John Denver's career! If one had to choose only a single CD of his best, then this would be it,
Very Excellent!.......1999-03-14
John was a great singer and this was a great CD! He will live on forever! PEACE!!!!

Customer Reviews:
Dale Bruning.... smooooth............2002-02-15
I once read, in the liner notes of an Ed Bickert album, about how refreshing it is to hear jazz that is "quiet and pretty". Such is the case here. No pyrotechnic chops or blistering arpeggios. Just simple, good, tasty jazz lines. Moore and Bruning blend together perfectly, as they have done before. If you're into the likes of Jim Hall, Ed Bickert, or Royce Campbell, you can't go wrong with this CD.
